This is an awesome place for mexican and the ambiance reminds me of a time in Tijuana..... You woulk in to smells of tasty food and mexican music, with the senorita waitstaff asking if you need assistance. You have your choice of take out or to be seated; if the latter you can sit in a booth and get some complimentary chips with dips while you wait. The steak burritos are huge and good, and I like the horchatas (which I wish came in a bigger cup as I think its a small portion. (6 dollars for a steak burrito and almost 4 dollars for 2 bottle of mexican coke [in a glass bottle=woot!]) I have always gone in the wee hours of the AM, but I believe they are open 24 hours. What the Heck, Arturos! I haven't been here in years, and decided to stop by for a late night bite post-theatre on a Sunday. The prices are OUTRAGEOUS! $1.99 for a side of sour cream and $4.00 because I asked for pickled vegetables? The food was mediocre (tacos, rice, beans, gorditas) and so over-priced ... I could have gotten the same quality from the diner down the street without being subjected to all the crazy side fees. Went there today. The food was good and the margaritas were delicious. However, on their table menu it says a lengua burrito is 8.25. So that's what I ordered. I got charged 14.25$ for it. I look at the menu above the counter and it's drawn on that it's 14.25$.. I did not make a fuss and just paid for it. but I'm bummed. I had no idea it would be that expensive. Please fix your table menu to reflect the correct price. Also, you don't have the option to tip on the credit card. We paid in card and it was written on the receipt "CASH TIP" luckily we had cash, normally we don't. I'd go back but I'm bummed about the price change. read more

Arturo's Tacos has my love and respect always and forever. I've been a regular here ever since I moved down the street from them and they've treated my lady and I like one of their own. They greet me by name when I walk in and have even gone as far as recognizing my voice when I call an order in. The food is delicious with every bite being better than the last. They're open late to satisfy your midnight cravings whether you're looking for dinner or you can choose from their 24 hour Mexican breakfast. Use to be my favorite spot for Carne al Carbon but prices went from $18 to $25+ plus portions of sides got smaller

Practically empty at 7:30 pm on a Sunday evening. We had hardly sat down and chips and salsa and pico de gallo were placed in front of us. I wish they had brought water also because I tried the salsa and it had a real kick to it. My boyfriend even said it was hot, which is how I know it wasn't something to play around with. Unfortunately the waitress didn't return for like 10 more minutes, but we were able to finally place our drink and food orders. I ordered a mango margarita and my boyfriend ordered a regular one--he specifically asked for his frozen and when it arrived, it was on ice. Mine was frozen. Strange. Food was out quick. Mixed fajitas had a good flavor to them. The beef was tender, chicken juicy, and shrimp perfectly cooked. We also added two chorizo tacos and a shrimp taco to make sure we wouldn't leave hungry. When we found out they're open 24/7 we realized this probably won't be our last time to Arturo's. read more

Years ago I had a late night dinner here only to find my car gone (towed) -- from their own customer parking lot in the back. I went back in to ask for the manager since this was clearly a mistake, with the receipt to prove that I had just dined there. I was *completely* ignored. Whoever the manager was, he/she went into hiding and the servers were unresponsive. I went out into the back and saw one of the cooks peeking through the door into the parking lot. I started to ask if he had seen my car and he quickly shut the door. When I finally got to the tow lot, they told me I'd have to pay and then take it up with the restaurant to get a refund. Needless to say I didn't get anywhere with them in the days afterward so I gave up. It still pisses me off to this day. Nice scam they've got going on there. Thank you Arturo's for the $120 burrito. I love this place! I've been coming here for over 5 years, I used to live across the street. Everything they make is really good. I love their chorizo tostadas, horchata and the little pico de gallo they serve with chips. Be carful though sometimes it's so hot you can barely stand it. Love this place!! Such great quality for the price, and the lengua is outstanding. Our favorite local butcher said it's his favorite taco joint as well. Everything we've tried has been delicious, and you get free chips and yummy salsas if you dine in. The staff are always smiley when I've been here, but don't expect to be overly pampered. The servers were not organized, there were only 2: one was tending guests while the other seemed to be doing unnecessary side work (filling Togo salsa ramekins) Waited so long for water we both lost our appetite and didn't even eat our food. We ordered a taco plate with one shrimp and 2 pork tacos - bland. The shrimp taco was wet & slimy, almost like biting into hot oil. The steak taco was equal parts steak and fat with onions and cilantro. No limes. No salsa. (The salsa that was being used to fill Togo ramekins but none for dine in guests?) Taco dinner: rice was inedible, beans were alright but too thin, tortillas were dry and too thick, the carnitas were also dry had to use the Sal's in a bottle - see above - to make them remotely edible. I ordered a couple lomo tacos from their board on the wall and listed 3.25. I got the bill and was charged 3.99 each. I asked why it was bait and switched and they claim they just updated their pricing today and failed to tell me how much they'd be. I didn't like the meat either. Really tough and and not tender fatty. Don't order their lomo! ask if their menu prices are accurate too. I feel a bit bummed about my experience because I actually only ate one of the over priced tacos. I boxed one up so I could take it home and try and doctor it up but left it by mistake. Funny too because I was there for at least 5 minutes after paying for my meal and talked to a friend who happened to be there and nobody bothered to buss the table and say, "here's your overpriced order". Three nights ago I was in the throes of an all-day, tequila-fueled margarita bender. After consuming what I can only surmise as one to two glasses of water throughout and was heading down what was sure to be a dark and dismal path. Until a light doth shone upon thine feet. There, radiating in the 4am February night stood the monolith, glowing with fervor and drawing me in like a moth to a flame. I swung wide the doors, greeted with the sounds that only the bustle of a late-night taco house could provide, entranced by wafted waves of fresh tortilla chips, al pastor and salsa verde. I took my seat at the table, and within moments a server had provided for me provisions to satiate my body's craving for fuel and hydration. Each bite better than the last, my tongue swelled with anticipation of the true prize still to come; a burrito. The lights went down, the music stopped, the throngs quieted and from behind the service counter rang a bell - DING. A spotlight shone down from the ether and illuminated the most breathtakingly resplendent creation I'd seen on God's green Earth. The tortilla, perfectly browned on the flat top, positioned precisely on the plate, piping hot as patrons sat lionizing my trophy as it came to me. My hands shook as I began to reach for it, wondering if perhaps I was not yet ready to receive my gift. What had I done, as a mere mortal man, to deserve what was just laid before me? I had not saved the lives of millions, not donated my wages to charity or serviced my fellow man in the name of God or Yeshua or Mohammed. I was but a poor drunkard, alone in the Chicago moonlight, wandering through the winding alleyways looking for solace. And solace I found in that burrito. Seriously though, I love this place. Worst Mexican food in Chicago. I ordered two shrimp tacos, with a side of rice and beans. I got food poisoning and I vomited all night long. The service was also terrible, I was clearly eating in, but the brought our food to the tables in paper bags, no plates, silverware etc. had to get up, to get some. Even if I hadn't gotten sick there was hardly any shrimp in the shrimp taco; and get this no fish tacos on the menu. The rice was cold and flavorless and the beans soupy and oily. I could barely get through one taco...and a few bites of the beans. The salsa (green and red) were prepackaged in the tiniest plastic containers..... never going back.... read more

Yes... this is what an al pastor burrito does to a girl in the early morning hours! Ah al pastor... the 'Mexican gyro' as described on Arturo's menu. Even tastier than expected, actually. A tender, well-seasoned mess o' meat. I'm throwing my old standby, carne asada, to the wayside! I wasn't even hungry but ended up eating almost all of it. Service was good-- they kept the free chips and salsa coming along with copious water refills to take the edge off of that hot salsa. And remember they're dealing with a bunch of drunks. How do they do it? That's one hell of an enviable tolerance. Bonus: getting serenaded by the dude with the guitar. Throw him a few bucks and he sings like a canary! Romantic? NO. Funny? This place is kind of deceiving from the outside. From looking at the outside of the place it looks like a step above a taquiera but not yet a nice sit down Mexican restaurant. when you walk in the place, you can tell that this place is a slight step above a standard taquiera and a sit down Mexican restaurant. Definitely no surprises here. They have a decent sized menu but i didn't want to get to adventurous so i just stuck with my standard, three carne asada tacos with cilantro and onion only. They did the trick and the prices were fair, nothing super-spectacular but they were decent. This place is open 24 hours plus it is right off of the Western Blue Line stop so this could potentially be a late night stop for me when I get the late night munchies. read more

I used to live in this neighborhood and come here often. The food is your normal city fast food taco place. You get chips if you dine in. Last night after work myself and another co-worker decided to eat here. We are bartenders so it was late, around 2:30am. I'm sure at that time of night (or morning) they're used to drunk girls and bros. however we were completely sober. So when we ordered 4 tacos @ 2.25 each (added cheese since the only thing that comes on it is lettuce and cilantro) a side of sour cream and a small horchata - I was surprised when the lady taking our order said $19.00. Whatever, I'm tired, hungry, and didn't care... Assuming my order was taken right. We tipped and sat down. When we had our order literally tossed on the table at us.. Apparently we should have ordered with a waitress if we wanted to stay and eat even though this place is set up like any other fast food joint where that's acceptable. Anyway, there was probably 4 pieces of shredded cheese and no side of sour cream. Went up to the counter and explained and the woman was EXTREMELY rude and told me I didn't pay for any of the extras. So 4 tacos was $19?? I then asked to see my receipt which I was not offered to begin with and saw she charged us for $5.40 worth of extras. Cheese is $0.65. She began screaming at me about how we didn't pay and she wasn't giving us anything. Obviously arguing with someone who barely speaks English is a lose lose situation anyway so I just sat down and ate the most over rated expensive tacos ever. Word to the wise- they're used to serving sloppy drunks and can get away with over charging for nothing. Watch your order and ask for a receipt. So you say it caters to Mexicans and hipsters? Shit, it's a good thing I'm a Mexican hipster. Or at least, that's the closest thing I come to if you look at the listed "target markets". This food? Pretty damn authentic. I mean, they don't have my grandmother's fork-tender pork and potato tacos, but no one seems to. That being said, the steamed beef (barbacoa) tacos (ask for lime on the side, mmm) with onion and cilantro are delicious. Not too hot on the chicken here, but that's a personal preference thing. Tortas are good. Have it all with a huge horchata. My dad and my boyfriend liked it, too. Pretty awesome after a full day of moving and feeling like death. And open 24 hours? You can't beat it. My biggest gripe is that they don't have mole (that's mo-lay, not the animal. It's a chocolate chile sauce). This makes me terribly sad. Oh, if you don't speak Spanish, be prepared to point at the menu for what you want. It's okay if you speak CRAPPY Spanish, but none at all doesn't bode well for communication. I've been going to Arturo's for 20 years (since 1987). Back then ... the chicken tacos were so good that it was worth the trip through (way pre-gentrified / yuppified) Bucktown to a place where Don Arturo walked the restaruant's aisles with a six shooter strapped to his waist. I'm not kidding. The father of the current Arturo, Arturo Sr., used to patrol the place late night so that we could eat our chicken tacos and suck down giant margaritas safely. He was such a great Patron. Back then ... the moral equivalent of modern Bucktown yuppie hippsters wouldn't dare go West of the expressway, much less go past Damen to Western. It was filled with Mexicans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans, local pols, and local artists who lived there for the cheap rent / good eats. Back then ... the chicken tacos were worth dodging bullets. Even now .... They are as good and worth putting up with Bullet Brained Bucktown Bobo's on their way to / from tomorrow's next trend. Arturo's Tacos will endure. read more

Did you know that La Pasadita closes at 3:30am? Oh yes. All THREE of them. Yessir. We tried in vain to sneak in at 3:37am....and failed. But, some nice man reminded us that Arturo's was 24 hours and off we went! Starving, tired, half-buzzed...Arturo's was our saving grace! Seriously, their chips and spicy salsa are really yummy. And my milaneza (breaded steak) torta ($5) was FAB. The bread it came on was delicious - one of the best tortas I've EVER had. They also offer up a variety of different tacos (chorizo, carnitas, carne asada,) for only 1.80! And they're HUGE...topped with all sorts of goodies. Yum. Can I come back here soon? I used to come here often and overlook its quirks such as the will-only-get-you-more-chips-if-you-beg-and-cash-only-tips wait staff. The caldos were amazing and the tacos were awesome after a night of drinking. But then one night I walked in and the food prices sky-rocketed. Each menu item was at least $2 more. My beloved caldo de res went from an affordable $6.95 to ten bucks! We decided to leave without ordering, I politely left a few dollars tip for the trouble of cleaning the table and the chips we started to eat. Suddenly, our waitress came chasing after us with our money, threw it on the ground, and told us to keep it. Luckily I had a few drinks in me so I laughed it off as hilarious.
