Let's call it a solid 4.25 stars. I really wish YELP would allow more flexibility in grading but that is for another day. Backstory - We have tried to visit this location 3 times since it opened. Either it was too busy, was reservation only, or the wait was just too long. My wife's birthday fell on a Tuesday (yesterday) this year so we assumed it would not be so insanely busy and we might get lucky. Sure enough, we were greeted at the door and informed of a 10-15min wait, which was great. After waiting around 20 minutes, we were seated. From the outside, the place looks absolutely massive but is shockingly small inside. There was a lot of dark wood and black iron which combined with the dim lighting made it almost too dark. I know my eyes are not great but I don't often need to pull out a flashlight to see the menu. Slight digression - Since when do we eat in the dark... I mean... typically one would like to see their food. Perhaps someone with poor hand-to-mouth coordination might end up with a fork in the chin... Just saying. A little heavy-handed on the "ambiance" :). Minor complaint... The service staff was nice. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, though she refused to sing happy birthday to my wife! Not cool! x( - Nonetheless, regardless of being shy, she is still on our good-gal list. :)~ For drinks, I ordered a Bulleit bourbon on the rocks... which was a $2 upcharge for the rock? I could have gladly saved my $2 for regular ice guys... LOL! Come on - it's literally FROZEN WATER (Clarification - upcharge is for a heavier pour!) My wife got the Sangria which she loved and the kiddos got whatever, who cares. We also received chips and warm salsa. The chips were tasty as was the salsa, though not used to having it warm. Typically when we make it at home, it is preferred to chill it first. Once the drinks arrived we placed our food orders. The birthday lady ordered the Mahi fish tacos with rice and black beans, kid 1 ordered the Birria tacos with rice and beans, kid 2 ordered a quesadilla large enough to sleep under, and the old man at the table ordered the Birria Beef Dip Sammich. I make a pretty epic Birria at home and know how time-consuming and difficult it is to make well. Asada's Birria is in the top 10 of Birria that I have had at restaurants and the top 5 places that offer it on the menu but do not specialize in it. It was not overcome with grease, the meat was tender enough to cut through with a butter knife and the overall flavor without the consumé was balanced. I did not use too much of my consumé because it was a bit salty for my tastes. I don't think the bread used for my sammich was right or at the very least it should have come out wrapped in their branded paper. It was fairly soggy on the bottom and I could not pick it up so I ended up eating it with a knife and fork. The overall flavor was good and I was not terribly let down by the sogginess but it would be nice to try eating it like an actual sandwich. The steak fries were good, with some just slightly over - I like that. When you let fries that big go over a bit, they get a toasty flavor and stay crisp a bit longer. My wife and kids all gave high praise to the flavors of their dishes. Everyone ended up looking a bit sleepy by the end of the meal. The only real complaint that I have overall is the price. You will certainly be paying a premium for your meal. While affordability for me is not really an issue, I just could not see spending that kind of money often for that type of food. Mexican cuisine is famous all over the world. The flavors take you to so many places and stick in your mind, luring you in for more as often as you can get it - however it can be made fairly inexpensively and still be pretty amazing! Reservations for 4:15. Seated at 4:04, chips no sooner than we sat down and the waitress followed and had our drink order taken at 4:06. Drink order was delivered at 4:12, and we gave our order of a steak burrito, loaded nachos with birria , and a corn tamale. Food came out at 4:30, all but the corn tamale. (Which was missed by mistake)refills on drinks were brought at 4:32 and the tamale was brought promptly at 4:35. The food was good, portion sizes are very large.We finished eating at 4:43, and we were given our check and boxes at 4:50, and she delivered warm towels at 4:55. The iced tea ran out at 4:56. They removed our shade at4:58, leaving my party in direct sunlight to provide comfort for another table. So I acted as a human shield from my parties eyes until the waitress came back at 5:01. We left at 5:03. Suggestions: get more shade. Leaving the waitress blind during our entire meal was off putting. Taking our shade to comfort someone else, was even worse. Tint the windows, put the umbrellas up, let the staff wear sunglasses, and almost 6 bucks for a hot tea, is unfair pricing. 5 bucks for iced tea is ridiculous. First time here on a recommendation from friends. It did not disappoint. This place was packed. I don't even know how long the wait was. I was there by myself so I was able to sit right away at the only open spot at the bar. Thank God. I ordered the Filet mignon tampiqueña. Came with rice and black beans(or refried) and two cheese enchiladas. The Filet was cooked perfect medium rare. The waitress didn't ask how I wanted it cooked which honestly made me a little nervous lol. The food. The rice and beans were very bland. Didn't eat much of them. The cheese enchiladas were surprisingly good despite looking very generic. The Filet mignon was tasty and cooked perfect. I don't remember what the sauce was. But it needed something. I added salt and squeezed some limes into it, boom, delicious. Well worth the price. I should have asked for raw and grilled jalapeños. Dang it. The reason for not giving 5 stars was due to the bland sides and the waitress. Which was the bartender. I was literally right in front of her and she never refilled my drink without me asking. Came here after a long day at LegoLand, hungry and ready to rest before heading home. We were 5 adults and 2 kids. We walked in taking our chances since we decided to go here super last minute. But they were kind enough to give us a booth right away. The ambiance here was so chic yet relaxed. There is something so homey about this place. I think it's the smell of fresh salsa that hits you right when you walk in. We got situated and they brought us some chips and salsa and that's when I knew we picked a great place. The salsa was hot and so tasty, unlike any other salsa I had tasted the chips were super fresh and crispy. Our waiter, Alex, came by and took our drink orders. I ordered the tamarind margarita and the rest ordered different cocktails. Our drinks came out very fast and Alex was back to take our food orders. He suggested to get the ceviche and the Cabo jerky which is grilled Korean short rib. I also ordered the Asada grilled Baja Bowl with chicken and both black and pinto beans. The rest of the group ordered burritos and Chicken tortilla soups. As we waited to admired the chic decor, the great drinks and shortly after the starters came out. The Cabo Jerky was incredible and the coleslaw that came with it was so tasty. I only wish we had ordered two since it was so delicious. The ceviche was fresh and super tasty. The shrimp was meaty and seasoned perfectly. Then our food came out. My Baja Bowl was delicious. It was a mixture of flavors and textures that worked so well together. The Foods & Alcohols | Mexican cuisine & signature cocktails. FOODS - Seasoned tortilla chips and roja salsa come with the food service; both are served warm. Incredible flavor from both tortilla chips and salsa. - Fried Calamari | Lightly battered and delicately crispy. Calamari is elongated with some really tender and others a little too chewy for my liking. - Crispy Carnitas | Tomatillo flavor marries up nicely with the carnitas which is perfectly cooked; tender with crispy edges. Handmade tortillas (corn or flour) complete the experience of piling on a little of everything and enjoying the dish taco style. Loved the carnitas but I'll be honest, the carne asada stole the show. - Signature Carne Asada | Extremely flavorful and juicy with its edges slightly crispy. I wanted Mexican food from a sit down restaurant and I was in the area and had no clue where to go. Yelp comes in clutch as always! I found this gem of a restaurant. It was around 2:15 on a Sunday and we were able to walk up and sit down right away. Out waiter David was welcoming funny and clearly a great server. He gave us suggestions asked what we liked and was readily available without being obnoxious. I ordered the Tacos de Birria and my mother ordered the Cantina Combo with a short rib taco and a chicken enchilada. I sat in judgment of her choice of chicken because in my experience, that is never a good choice from a Mexican food restaurant. More on that later... We were presented with chips and salsa quickly. One thing out of the ordinary is they serve their salsa warm. I've rarely had that experience and I didn't hate it but it was very different. The chips were great! They were strips and had like a slightly spicy seasoning salt on them. Soon our food came. The plate was huge. That tacos were huge. The mound of rice was huge! The beans were plentiful. I ate one taco but soon became distracted because I wanted to try my mother's enchilada so that I could criticize it. Let me tell you this... that was THEE best Chicken enchilada I've ever had at a restaurant. It was soooo good. The chicken was so very flavorful. It was juicy and shredded nicely. The enchilada sauce had a depth of flavor that felt like it wasn't just thrown together out of a can but actually smoothed over in a pan and cooked perfectly. I would come back and get that again most definitely! The booths in the restaurant were comfy. The bar area had lots of TVs with and would definitely be an awesome place to watch a game. I didn't try any cocktails as it was the middle of the day and I had lots of driving to do to get back to LA but I would've loved to and will do that next time! Holy cow the salsa! The food here is reassally good. We enjoyed the drinks as well but the star of the show is the salsa on the table when you're seated. It's WARM. It's super unique but it works. Came here on a Sunday for a birthday lunch fir 8 people at 11am, which is when they open. When we arrived at 10:50am, there was already a crowd waiting outside for them to open. The ambiance is great. Large bar, bright, lots of seating options. We were in the enclosed patio, which was really nice and not loud. It was nice that all 8 of us could have a conversation and hear each other. Service: a little slow, but overall good. I asked for a straw and lemon for my water and never got it. Cocktails: they have an extensive cocktail list. The espresso martini sounded delicious, but I opted for a Smoked Pineapple Margarita. It wasn't too sweet and tasted really good. Food: The chips and salsa are amazing. The salsa is served warm and is smokey. I could eat a lot of this! Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos: these come with a delicious raspberry jam. On first bite I loved these; however, they were way too spicy for my liking and lit my mouth of fire. Took a long time to recover from my one bite. Fire Grilled Romaine Salad with Shrimp. My boyfriend's mom got this and it looked delicious. She highly recommended it. Chicken Tortilla Soup: This was a huge serving and very chunky and filled with a lot of chicken. Cantina Combo: With Short Rib Tacos and Carnitas Enchilada. The tortilla for the taco was so good. The Carnitas Enchilada was pretty good, but I probably wouldn't order it again. I really loved the cilantro buttered rice and refried beans. We all agreed that we'd come back here again. This would also be a great spot to stop and wait out traffic. This is a great find in San Clemente! Right by the outlets. And one of the first really good Mexican places around. You basically have to make a reservation even for lunch during the week. This place gets so crowded. And I can see why! Their food is hot and delish and comes very quick. And everything is so fresh! Their salsa is Smokey and very good. It comes kinda warm (which i love!) and the chips are so crispy that I could eat a whole basket myself. They have some amazing apps too! I usually get the BBQ pork quesadilla which is soooooo yummy! Their taquitos are also amazing. I have ordered the chicken enchiladas with green sauce which are so good. The lobster enchiladas are to die for. You can get their buttered cilantro rice and either black beans or refried. Or if your not into beans their grilled veggies are so very good. The servers are really nice and I tell ya, you can be out of there in less then an hour if you order your food right away. It comes so fast and hot! One of our fav servers is Jackson! He is on top of everything. He is wonderful! The atmosphere is very updated and beautiful. Cozy and they have a wonderful patio out back. Even the front patio on the parking side is always full. Major let down .. I'm visiting san clemente and wanted to treat myself to some tasty mexican food after a day of surfing. I ordered the steak burrito and hibiscus margarita. I paid $41 for this. My burrito had only rice and meat inside , no beans, no cheese, no lettuce, nothing else beside rice and meat. My margarita was like tasty but a joke in terms of how much you get, it was a $15 margarita and for like 3 sips. Also no chips provided. Also it was a togo order and no utensils or napkins provided. I hate leaving bad reviews but this was not acceptable. The only good part of this was the friendly hostess who greeted me and quickly grabbed my order for me. We had dinner for Father's Day. I am always looking for authentic Mexican food and flavor! This is definitely modern, but authenticity and flavor is definitely there! Although they claim handmade tortillas, they aren't but they are good. We had a Papi Chulo Skinny Margarita, guacamole, butter platter, Shrimp Chipotle Prawns, Crispy Carnitas Plate, Signature Carne Asada Plate, and their Crab Stuffed Salmon special. I must say that the assorted butters were my favorite! I've only had this assorted butter experience in Mexico. Food was absolutely delicious, fresh, and esthetically pleasing. Food was excellent, server was excellent, drinks were great...our hostess couldn't be bothered to show us to our table where our parents were seated already however. When we came in, there wasn't anyone else in the lobby area, and what I'm guessing was two hostesses behind the counter talking to each other, when I let one of them know we had a reservation and our parents were already here, she just said, "They're in the dining room," and she went back to her conversation. Didn't ruin our night by any means, but made me feel like I'd inconvenienced the hostess and not so welcomed. read more

While the experience I had with take out was a totally negative one; Jenni from Asada Cantina was quick to follow up to try to make things right. First off, and most importantly, Asada does provide salsa for take out orders. Evidently, they do not provide complimentary chips and salsa like you get if you eat there. Not sure how the hostess confused my request for salsa to go along with my order but things happen. I probably should have asked for a manager. I received a refund for the food and a gift card to offset paying cash for salsa. Kudos to management here. They actually do really care. As I said in my original review - this is a beautiful restaurant with great service, awesome bartenders and delicious food and I will be returning. Thank you Jenni! read more

3 days on and am still thinking about the chicken burrito we shared here. Ordered it with sauce. Was big enough to share and have leftovers. There are plenty of really good Mexican restaurants where you can get a good burrito, and for almost $20 it better be this good. The service was excellent and the restaurant has great ambience w unexpected open deck out back. Highly recommended! read more

I was really excited to see a non-chain Mexican restaurant at the Outlets of San Clemente but unfortunately the food was extremely salty and among my mom and sisters we couldn't even finish the appetizer nachos. I understand they want people to drink (and the yummy-looking margaritas were flowing!) but to overly salt the chips, beans, meat and include a spicier salsa with the free chips vs a more mild one left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Additionally, after waiting for our table for an hour on a Saturday, we were hoping the food would come out fast so we could continue shopping, but it took at least 45 minutes for our nachos to come out. That said, only come if you want to have a long date with many drinks and don't mind salty foods. For the good, the location and paintings on the wall are gorgeous. We had views of the kitchen, but there were some tables with beautiful views of the ocean. Also, the watermelon agua Fresca was nice and refreshing. read more

We had a really nice lunch with Good food and service. The salsa and chips are the best around!

This is one of my go to spots for carne asada. It's always flavorful and juicy. They also cook it perfectly to your liking. Their chips and salsa are tasty as are their margaritas. The restaurant itself is very spacious with cool decor. Every time we visit our servers are welcoming and attentive. read more
