The night of our dinner, our waitress was helpful, attentive, and friendly, to all of us! The food was wonderful. The vegetarian empanadas were floury, fried to perfection, with perfectly cooked quinoa and (butternut?) squash. My SO's steak was PERFECT. A drizzly bleu cheese sauce and seasoned corn covered it in perfectly crisp, juicy, and savory goodness. My ham-covered chicken was crisp on the outside, juicy on the inside, and perfectly seasoned with polenta. The fried bananas were wrapped together with sweet nuts, alongside some awesome macademia-banana ice cream. Worth every penny. read more

Dear Tacoma, I didn't know you had this kind of hip dining with delicious food in you. Going to Asado for happy hour made me feel like I was living back on capital hill or LA. The ambiance and people looked very trendy. My partner and I went to happy hour for drinks and appetizers. We shared the camerones parrilla (prawn skewer), arepes de carne asado, and burger dip. WOW. They were all super tasty with amazing seasoning. The prawn skewer came with four delicious shrimp and grilled peppers. The arepes de carne asado is minced flank steak wonderfully seasoned and spicey with cornbread all in a salsa or tomato sauce. The burger dip was one of the best sandwiches ever. Since its opening, Asado has been one of the best restaurants in Tacoma. While I could go on and on about their amazing restaurant service, I'd like to focus on the bar, because their bar menu at happy hour is the biggest bang for your buck in town. The Asado Burger is pure heaven, though any of the meat and cheese plates or skewers of delicious meat will not let you down either. When I lived in Tacoma this was a regular destination for me, and when I return to visit, I always stop by. Will, the bartender seems to be the mayor of Asado town. I signed up for Yelp just to write this review. I am Argentine, and am always excited to eat beef. The steak was good, no doubt. It was cooked perfectly. It was a good size for the price. Glad I made a reservation on a Saturday as the place was packed. The staff is friendly and very attentive, helped by the small size of the place. The food is good, one degree outside the typical fare; slightly adventurous without causing concern whether you will like it. My stuffed pork chop was skillfully prepared and the chop was quite good though the chorizo stuffing was bland. My wife's mixed grill had very tasty beef and well-seasoned prawns (shrimp, actually) but the chorizo was disappointing with almost no flavor, as if it were made with chicken breast and no spices (like the stuffing in my pork chop). My biggest complaint is how LOUD the place is. People are packed into a relatively small space and every surface is hard. Some fabrics on the floor and walls would quiet the place a bit; as it was we had to speak loudly to be heard across the table. We skipped dessert just to get out of there so we didn't have to yell at one another. Try it if you are looking for a new flavor, but not if you are looking for an intimate setting. read more

I finally got to try this place. Our waiter was polite and attentive also the food was generally pretty good. I would give this place 4/5 for food and service brought by the waiter. However, I have had a couple unpleasant instances where I guess the manager (woman) looked at our table and gave us that dirty look on her face... I really didn't appreciate that.... at all. Being that Asado is located directly across the street from Masa, it took me a long time to finally get up the courage to branch out and walk the 60 long feet to "the other side." Since they are both owned by the same group, I wasn't really concerned with the quality, but I had heard horror stories of bills with 57 digits, debt collectors and broken knee caps. Truth be told, I often times forget that no matter how pricy a place is, in this poor man's future we now inhabit, the happy hour menu reigns supreme. Like Masa, Asado has a very nice and innovative interior, and unlike Masa, most of the waitresses are smiling pretty much all the time. The seating is comfy and, again, like Masa, I love that the walls basically open up to the streets, allowing for a very pleasant indoor/outdoor fusion. While the prices in the bar still range from about 8 to 16 dollars, it is still a breath of fresh air compared to the 25-40 dollars you will spend when diving into their dinner menu. Calamari Frito - Yeah, Boyyyyy. They nailed it. Very similar to the Calamari at the Ram (which under normal circumstances might be an insult to a restaurant of Asado's caliber, but if you see my Calamari review for the Ram, you'll realize this is an immense compliment). Long, thin and tender slices of squid, perfectly cooked so that chewy is but a memory. The breading is delicious and much zippier than most places, and the aioli is delicious with the jalapeno kick. To come full circle, they nailed it. Ceviche - I had never had ceviche before, so I have nothing to compare it to. I liked it. I love seafood and I love guacamole... thus, I liked it. Queso Frito - Sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind and shave a few years off of your life for the love of cheese. I really really really wish that I was still young and invincible enough to eat meals like this on a daily basis, alas, I do wish to live long enough to eat again. I think I may have proved myself a glutton when I requested a plate of sweet potato fries to accompany this dish. Worth it. I really want to go to Argentina about every other day. I want to eat lots and lots of beef, drink lots and lots of wine and see penguins. Argentinian people are talkers! They are lively! They want you to be happy! Did Asado transport me there? Not really. First of all, I think paying $17 for lunch was too much. I did not even order a beverage! No vino or cola, nada. Ordered the skewer/side salad lunch. My skirt steak was delicious and cooked to perfection. I also had the wedge salad which was topped with a tangy dressing, corn and avocado. My taste buds hate giving those three stars, but my wallet does not. Interior is dark wood, sexy. Hmmmm... Also, other reviewers are saying the service was super. The server we had was meh. She seemed to not care to be there nor did she really care what we ordered. She had a reaction (I'm going to call it a negative one) when my girlfriend placed her ordered so I asked her about it. She was taken aback about being asked, naturally, but then seemed to blow off my question and said, "No. What she ordered is good." That was it. No more conversation for me. I don't normally go out to eat in Tacoma. This was a special occasion for my mom's birthday and my sister was in town so she picked it out based on yelp reviews. I do agree that the curtain in the front is weird. We had reservations so we were seated promptly. The chimichurri butter was tasty. Now to the food. I ordered the fish of the day which was a grilled tuna with the pablano polenta. The fish was overcooked and dry. The polenta had way too much cheese. My mom got the petite grill with the purple mash potatoes which looked great. My sister got the butter squash gnocchi and her husband got the flat iron steak. There was not much gnocchi in her dish but abundant cloves of garlic and macadamia nuts. The flat iron steak looked amazing and her husband gave great reviews. For dessert was the torte de chocolate aka lava cake. Described as a soufflé it was very dense cake almost like brownie. Soufflé it was not. Overall I was not satisfied with my plate and I could tell my sister was not either with her gnocchi. I would recommend to stick with the steaks at this place. Hands down the best restaurant in Tacoma. This place is classy, charming, intimate, and dressed to the nines with proper service. That goes without saying, the food is a prestigious display of chefs who love to cook and enjoy eating. I know it's an Argentine 'steak' house, but I always love to get the chicken. I've had the steak too and it was perfect. I also like to get greedy and binge on the gourmet donuts that you can get as a dessert that comes with different dipping sauces. Tip: Make a reservation. I have been to Asado a few times now and I am always pleased with the service, food and cocktails. We went recently for a birthday dinner and order some wine. The owner came out to apologize that they were out of what we had ordered but gave us a similar wine (that was more expensive) but only charged us for the price of the wine we originally chose. This is a great example of excellent service that sets Asado apart from many restaurants on 6th Ave. The menu is a little heavy.. lots of meats and potatoes with that Argentinian flavor. What a great birthday dinner! I took my boyfriend here for his birthday, and it was the perfect choice. The service was excellent, and so was the food. We had the ceviche appetizer, which comes with plantain chips and raw fish with guacamole. It tasted fresh and light. We really enjoyed it. Quinn ordered the mole lamb shank with cipolinni onions. It was out of this world amazing! I had the chicken breast with arugula and cherry tomatoes, and I ordered the purple mashed potatoes for my side. Absolutely delicious. Two and a half stars. We finally went here a couple weeks ago, expecting amazing steak. We enjoyed everything very much, EXCEPT the steaks, which were chewy. My flatiron was almost inedible. My boyfriend's ribeye was passable, however, definitely not worth the price. I am sorry to say we've had better steak at Applebee's (and I'm ashamed to admit we've even eaten there). The place gets a few stars because the cocktails, salad, the chimichurri butter and bread, and the dessert of fried bananas and macadamia nut ice cream were all really excellent. We also really liked the sides that came with our steaks. But the whole thing was supposed to be the steak. Also, the check was much larger than I expected. Yummy yum yum. With all of the steak/meat options in Pierce county, I would seriously have to give this place a spot in the top 3. (El Gaucho's takes #1). What's really amazing about this place is it's unique compared to anything else in the area. No where in Washington (except perhaps Seattle metro) can you find such unique dishes. Each meat is seasoned differently and their wine selection is amazing. In addition to great food - this place nails it on the head as far as decor is concerned. Their half in/half out patio makes it perfect for when WA has some normal weather. Having now moved to Washington DC - I do miss this place. Those who know me already know how much I love this place... At present I'm the Duke which illustrates that fact. Sitting here eating dinner and realized I've never written a review for them! It is a fun, yet upper scale place. It is by no means quiet but could serve for romantic all the same. I try to make a habit of eating here at least once a week because of how good the food and service is. Drinks are well made. I've never had a bad meal and have tried many different things off the menu. If you are in Tacoma and looking for some good food, I highly recommend Asado. You will not be disappointed. P.S. One thing that thrills me to no end is being in walking distance to good restaurants from home. Asado is one of these! In this area on 6th on the weekends it is more congested than usual and all of the partiers hit the string of bars and it is not fun which is why I go to these restaurants during the day or on a weekday. The minute you walk into Asado you smell a smokiness that is seductive and wonderful. Whatever they cook in the kitchen has me hooked instantly! I have been here twice now for lunch. The first time I was here I got a Chorizo baguette sandwich. Absolutely wonderful! The second time I was here I just stopped by for a light snack and got guacamole and pico de gallo with Plantain chips. Those did not stay around long either! I am looking forward to going here in the evening. I think they change their menu for supper and look forward to seeing what they have to offer! Just not on the weekends! My husband and I had a great dinner here this last weekend. Thanks to trusty Yelp I found this place when we were shopping on 6th Ave in Tacoma. Yes, it's a little pricey for a casual dinner but the food was delicious. For starters my husband and I shared the Ceviche. What a great appetizer. It was light, citrusy and refreshing. I liked the avocado added on top and the plantain slices that came with the dish. For my entree I tried the Parilla Mixta. It comes with a skirt steak on a skewer, large prawns and a chorizo sausage. It served on top of your choice of lentils, purple mash potatoes or polenta. I chose the lentils for my side. Wow, that dish was so good. But the skirt steak was the standout for me. It was so tender and cooked to perfection. The prawns were also great. They were huge and tasty as well. The Parilla Mixta is a good dish for someone who likes variety on their plate. My husband ordered the Piccata de Pollo. I had a few bites of his dish and it was yummy too. The chicken breast was juicy and tangy. The arugula and cherry tomatoes that came with it was a great compliment to the dish. My first experience at Asado was for lunch. When you walk into Asado, you will notice that the decor is very polished. It certainly has one of the nicer restaurant interiors on 6th Ave. I sat at the bar and the leather stools were very comfortable. Service was just average. I eventually decided to order the "Petite Mixed Grill" which included a steak skewer, 2 prawns and a chorizo link over a bed of polenta. I must say, the meal was very good. There was a nice kick of spice and flavor with every bit. The steak was cooked perfectly and chorizo was very tasty. The weakest part of the dish was the prawns which I felt were average, but the savory polenta more than made up for it. Based on the fact the food was a 4.5 and the service was a 3.5, My first visit to Asado was a solid 4. Last week I decided to try out Asado's "late night happy hour" where they serve many of their bar dishes for $3 off of the regular price - two thumbs up for this! I stopped by around 9:30pm and it was pretty busy. The bartender was social and genuinely interested in making sure everything was taken care of - another two thumbs up! I ended up ordering the steak skewer with a side of polenta which only cost me $6.95 - an amazing deal for the quality of food you get. Both the steak and polenta were on spot. For my second time around I would give Asado a 4.5. I would have to say that Asado puts out some of the best food on 6th Ave and if happen to stop by during happy hour, you'll get a great deal on some tasty dishes. I'm hoping in the future the service leans more towards my experience last week and if that's the case, this may eventually end up being one my favorite restaurants to go to. This may go down as one of the best dinner dining experiences. Ever. Patio, service, food, drinks... Awesome. We sat outside... Thank God for the overhead heaters! I would have froze otherwise. The server was prompt in grabbing drink orders and getting them out to us. The sparkling Rosé was perfectly lovely. We spent a bit of time talking and weren't quite ready to order but the server checked in occasionally. When we were ready she was very helpful in recommendations, as well as very knowledgeable about the gluten free options, which are not marked in the menu. I went with the sea bass over the steelhead. Sweet Jesus! That was the most perfectly cooked piece of fish I've ever had at a restaurant. Bravo! It was perfectly seasoned... I'm a salty kinda gal and it was on point. The asparagus and zucchini were excellent as well. Crisp and not at all soggy like you get so many other places. Overall this was a really great experience! I can totally see myself coming back... I've received a few questions regarding this review. So let me clarify... Our server was fine, but the host was rude! First and foremost I am about customer service, and first impressions are very important. I was hoping they could be redeemed by their food. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre at best. I ordered a steak. It had absolutely no flavor. It was cooked perfectly, so I was hopeful, but to my disappointment it was bland. The best thing on my plate... well it was on my husband's plate... was the polenta. That restaurant is a total disappointment, and over priced for the quality. Don't get me wrong... I will pay good money for a GOOD meal. El Goucho, Mortons, and Ruth Chris I have all frequented. They aren't cheap, but they know how to cook a steak, and I have no problem paying for dinner there. I enjoyed my meal on many levels. First of all I love their interactive website for reservations it was very handy. The food was delicious and I would give this a 5 star rating. The service was 'Johnny on the spot' and they made sure the wine glasses were filled. When I mentioned it was my wife's birthday they added a dessert of our choice for no charge! On the downside I think they try to pack too many people into the restaurant. I would not recommend this place to anyone that needed to use a wheel chair to get around. The isles are not ADA compliant and it was hard just to walk to the bathroom without bumping into someone. The restrooms did not seem ADA compliant either. The stall had the door flipping into the space and it would be hard for anyone to navigate a wheel chair into the space. Happy Hour is great when you haven't experienced any Argentienian food and want to sample the appetizers. We didn't have a conventional dinner, but appetizers were more than enough to satisfy us. We had scollops parrilla with bacon leek slaw, lamb empanadas, and arepes de carne asado. All three were done flawlessly and the presentation was great. Save room for desert because the deep fried ice cream and sweet avocado sauce is to die for. I will forever remember and thank this place for giving us such a memorable dining experience. I was looking for a hip, innovative, and unique place for my very first date. We got there around 6:30PM on Friday night and the place wasn't all that crowded (yet). We were seated by outside table, she was on the window seat. The night was sunny but still got bit chilly by the night and she was wearing a very thin dress. Luckily, the restaurant had heated air coming from the ceiling(?) and prevented the people by window warm enough to enjoy the dining - I thought this was excellent feature of the restaurant especially when weather can easily ruin the night/experience. The waitresses quickly came with the bread and cheese. The cheese was excellent! I asked our server what it was, but quickly forgot about it. My date was impressed already. She believes that a good restaurant serves good bread - which Asado just provided. Thanks! Our entrees were also excellent. Being very naive on South American cuisine, we asked lots of questions. My date isn't good with spicy foods so Churizo wasn't for her (lol). I did have pork-chop and my date ordered Gnocchi. Both were innovative and something we (independently) haven't had before. Our highlight was the dessert. Although it was our first date, we have been friends for few years and had 'friends dinner' few times. Both of us are big on desserts (neither drinks, so we tend to order desserts). We had the house-special chocolate dessert which was chocolate/brownie ice-cream sticks with raspberry dipping sauce. The eatery is right in the heart of U of Puget Sound college land. You feel as though you've walked into a steakhouse in Austin. Rustic, cowboy...which fits the menu of course...or should I say Gaucho? Works for me...I went to UCSB. Our menu: Serrano Wrapped Prawns -- Field Greens, Salsa Criolla, Cumin Honey, Cotija Cheese +++ These were tasty. Loved the salsa and cheese. Prawns were a little overdone, but not sure you you can do this dish without overcooking them. Queso Frito -- Skillet Baked Provolone, Drunken Goat and Spanish Bleu, Salsa Molido, Chimichurri and Grilled Potato Bread ++++ I loved the combination of the potato bread with the cheese. This was just as you'd expect...an oozing, gooey mess of cheese. It was tasty...but I'm not a huge fan of just cheese. Empanadas (of course we had them) -- Savory Beef and Lamb, Vegetarian or Seasonal Turnovers +++++ Great empanadas...all of them were good. My favorite was the lamb. Uli's Chorizo Asado -- Uli's Grilled Spanish Chorizo, Peppers, Chimichurri ++++ I'm a big fan of chorizo and this chorizo was a win. The chimichurri was a perfect accompaniment and I'd recommend you make sure to order this up. Lomillo -- Hangar Steak with Peruvian Purple Mashed Potatoes +++ Maybe a little overdone. The mashed potatoes were the star of this dish. With the main's (of which we only had one), you have a choice of peruvian purple mashed potatoes, poblano polenta, stewed lentils, braised quinoa or charred red onion mashed potatoes We're one of those families that shares everything regardless of whether we're in a tapas restaurant or not. To start, out waitress was Christy who was the most attentive, happy, and personable server I have had in years. (No over-exaggeration here) not once did I have to ask for refills, sugar for my tea, plates to be removed (two person tables were small) so manager(s) if you see this. That woman deserves a raise! Now onto the food. We started with calamari, which was the most fresh, tasteful calamari I have had in quite a while. Also with two dipping sauces which were wonderful as well. We then split the chicken fettuccine. I can't even begin to describe how flavorful and delicious that was. The chicken was extremely juicy and had a delicious crispy outside of light seasoning. Nothing was dry, overly seasoned, etc, it was PERFECT. I will definitely be coming back for some dessert, all of the desserts are hand made by the chefs from scratch. What can I say, I have always had a great time, either with a date or a group of friends. Skirt steak was amazing! They had a Kobe beef special once it was soo amazing! Polenta plate is great, I use that as an appetizer! I'm sad my fave waiter is gone! read more
