Our first impression of Katie Downs Tavern was excellent. The host was incredibly kind and seated us at a wonderful table with a beautiful ocean view, which made us excited for our meal. Our server, Mary, also started off on a positive note. She brought drinks for the two people I was with and even offered me a few beer samples to help me decide what I wanted, which I really appreciated. Unfortunately, after that, the service took a disappointing turn. While I was deciding on my drink, Mary left our table. During that time, four other tables were seated around us. I watched as she greeted those tables, took their drink and food orders, served their drinks, and eventually brought out their meals--all before returning to us. When she finally came back, she asked if I had decided on a drink. I told her yes, and mentioned that it had taken quite a while for her to return. She then took our food order, but we continued to wait much longer than the tables that had been seated after us. Seeing every one of those tables receive their food and drinks before us was frustrating and made us feel overlooked. Also, our table should've been cleared before given the check, but when she dropped it off, she actually asked if we wanted her to ckear the table. How tacky is that?! It was frustrating and made the whole experience feel careless and unprofessional!! I can't say why our experience was so different, but it honestly left us feeling judged or that our table simply wasn't a priority. It's unfortunate because the location, view, and our initial welcome were wonderful. I hope this was just an off day, as the restaurant has so much potential to provide a great experience from start to finish. I am in customer service and I would not treat my guests the way she did. Pizza with a view! Probably the best pizza I've had in a while. This is my second time visiting Katie Downs while visiting family in Tacoma. The first time was 2018 and I always remember how good the pizza was. So we decided to stop by for dinner last week while we were in town. We asked to be seated outside since the weather was nice such an amazing view! Had a drink and we shared a small pizza and a Cesar salad. I forgot what pizza this is, but it was aaaaaaamazing!! The salad did not disappoint either. Staff was really friendly and attentive. We will be back for sure next time we are in town. read more

Waterfront tavern right on the bay in Tacoma, sitting out on stilts over the water. We didn't actually eat here, we just stopped by to grab a glass of wine on the patio and enjoy the scenery. While I can't personally speak to how the food tastes, we did look around at the dishes being brought out to other tables, and honestly, it didn't look very appetizing. We were definitely glad we chose to go somewhere else for dinner afterward. The view is great, but the service was extremely frustrating. It took forever just to get any help and get our drinks. We waited about 15 minutes just for a server to come over, and then another 15 minutes on top of that just to get our glass of wine. If it wasn't for the fantastic view keeping us occupied, and the fact that we had somewhere else to be right after, the delay would have been even more annoying. If you are strictly looking for a good view of the water in Tacoma and have time to kill, it's a decent spot to sit outside. But if you want that view paired with great food, good drinks, and attentive service, I would definitely recommend looking elsewhere. read more

A great place to rest and relax with nibbles and sippins, especially outside on a nice day. Waitstaff are friendly, though with the deck they may have a little trouble noticing if you need their attention, so if you choose the deck outside... RELAX and be patient. Enjoy the view while you wait. The deep dish pizza is good, but not absolutely spectacular. Went in last night with two other couples. The staff was super nice and attentive. We went in on a full round of happy hour margaritas. I was thinking they were probably going to be short and watered down but that was incorrect. 16 ounce glasses and 2 deep had us all laughing like idiots. We got the calamari, Diablo prawns, bbq nachos, and the deluxe nachos. Calamari was super tender. A little over seasoned for my taste but not bad. All the nachos were perfect. I thought the diablo prawns were going to be a little more spicy from the name but they were still pretty tasty. We were there at 5pm on a Friday so it was pretty loud but that was completely expected. Would definitely come back. Thanks for a great experience. read more

Great service from everyone here! The ambiance was chill especially since I went on a Tuesday evening. Plenty of free parking in the lot, and the outside of the building is decorated as a moat so it was pretty cool I got the customized 7" my pie, I think they said about $1 per topping you put on. Not too bad of a price point since they give you a choice of sides. I'm not the biggest fan of deep dish pizzas because there's too much bread but I thought they did theirs pretty well but their crust did get soggy pretty quick. Their curly fries were crunchy tho! Been here twice now. Once for book club (recommend something like that in the warmer months and outdoor seating) and again while the in-laws were in town. Service was exceptional both times! Super friendly and accommodating! Both times were great! The menu had something for everyone, from the vegetarian to the FIL who refuses to eat vegetables! The personal size pizza with side salad was perfect! The mocktail lemonade is an absolute must! Last few weeks I visited Tacoma and had a chance to eat here at this water front restaurant. The place is very nice, the foods are quite tasty. I was craving for patty melts since I haven't had for a long time. My sister had a reuben sandwich which also very good. The appetizer calamari was excellent. The prices are reasonable for a nice restaurant with a view like this one. The server is attentive and fast. It's close the pier where people are squid fishing which is nice to stroll after the meal. It's lunch so we didn't try the pizzas. The patty melts and reuben rye bread toasted perfectly. I really enjoyed them. The fries are great. Sometimes it's nice to have lunch with a view and here in Tacoma, wonderful when it's not raining. read more

What a perfect casual patio to visit in the spring and summer! I have been to this restaurant a couple times now, and the service has always been consistent and kind. The food is definitely more casual, but still delicious. Their happy hour has incredibly reasonable prices, for example, eight dollar bloody mary's and margaritas (and they definitely have a strong pour!). I've had a great time the two times I've been here, I definitely recommend this place if you're looking for more patios to enjoy in Tacoma! read more

The location of Katie Downs is perfect on the waterfront. The parking may look full, but there are still generally lots of available seating in the restaurant. Depending on the time of year (summer, fall, winter, spring), there may be outdoor seating also available. The indoor seating Dows allow for you to enjoy the sporting events taking place - from boxing, to horse racing, to MLB, to MLS, and NFL... there is always something to watch. The food is varied from pizza to seafood. Their pizza is delicious. This particular visit to Katie Downs, we enjoyed two taco salads and added some jalapeños. Also enjoyed their Katie's Kicking Cooler - great beverage. The service is friendly (always appreciate Mary sayin hello whether she is our server or not) and the value is great - get on their loyalty benefit and it pays off! There was no wait time for a table; however, we chose to eat inside the restaurant on a sunny day - so to say the least, outdoor seating was where the majority of people were headed. Wouldn't you know it, I order the one salad (Chop-Chop) that comes with dressing already mixed in, not on the side. The salad was not flavorful, in fact, it was basically dry, because they do not put enough dressing on the salad. In addition, the lady at the table next to me ordered the same salad and after one bite she requested additional dressing on the side, which, in hindsight, I should have done, and regret not doing so. The restaurant needs to learn to not be so skimpy on the salad dressing, and since it's only a balsamic vinaigrette, it's relatively inexpensive, so why cheapen out? Better yet, just serve the dressing on the side like your other salads. Definitely not worth the $24 I spent, and I won't be ordering that item again. read more

We stopped by Katie Downs in old Tacoma by the water for a quick, light dinner. Started with calamari, a beer, and a drink. The calamari was delicious--really enjoyed it--but it was almost gone by the time our water and drinks finally arrived. Then we ordered the guacamole burger and fish tacos. Unfortunately, the tacos were a big disappointment--everything about them was bland. The guacamole burger had a thin patty that was cooked well (pretty much the only way it could be, given how thin it was), but the steak fries were overdone and crispy in a bad way. Service was inconsistent; the staff didn't check on us at all throughout the meal, and I had to go out of my way to get the check. If you love rich flavor pizzas, where you don't need to eat 3 slices to feel full, Katie Downs is da bomb! We came on a Friday night around 8pm, no lines and not too busy: perfect! You've gotta be 21+ or you can order the deliciousness for pick-up, it's a great spot for winter or summer as the deck over the waterfront is gorgeous and fun in the summer. I had a personal pan pizza of Great White. Great tasting chicken, white sauce, artichoke and some other ingredients. I added red pepper flakes for some balance- SO good. 7" pan is perfect personal pizza size. Our server Holly was polite, professional and answered questions for our experience which was helpful and great! We were out on the outdoor patio. I loved that you could feel the patio ever so slightly moving to add to the seaside charm - loved that. The food is still good, the service is fine but the prices have gotten so high that we absolutely will not be returning, ergo the one star. I realize that prices of everything have increased but what they've done is completely out of sight. I ordered shrimp tacos. You used to get three, now you get two. There were probably three small shrimp and lots of fillings of veggies in each taco and I upcharged to onion rings which was a couple of dollars. My husband had a meatball sub, three meatballs in bread with fries. My sandwich was $34 and I know there was no where near that cost in the tacos and my husbands was $24. I can get three packages of organic beef at costco for that. We didn't even have alcohol, just iced tea and the total with tax and tip for lunch came to $93. This is not an upscale place, its nice but not worth that so we will not be returning until they make it affordable again. read more

This is a just sports bar and restaurant on the water. I would not expect good food, but good enough to be food. We got their pizza, diablo shrimp, and calamari. The pizza was good but it was like a fancier pizza hut pizza which I wanna say is not a bad thing, I love the old pizza hut hand tossed thick crispy crust. They call it "deep dish" but it's just a thick crust. The diablo shrimp was definitely not worth it we got about 8 shrimps that were the previously frozen tail-on shrimp about size 41-50. Service was great and there were a lot of tvs for sports. Overall If I wanted to watch a game on the water with mediocre food, I'd come. Other than that it wasn't anything special. read more

It's pretty hard to mess up a standard, All-American BLT but this NOISY, watered down Tacoma tavern tried their hardest to. Mine was served: open faced on a stale baguette with: two (almost dead) ends of a tomato, three bacon bits (each less than an inch long) and what must have been close to a whole head of lettuce finely chopped. Trying to apply the late-arriving mayo was almost as TOUGH as the baguette. read more

I much prefer to eat outside, but obviously, that is not an option during the winter. The service was fine. The steamed clams, southwest salad with chicken, and lemon cake did not meet our expectations. Typically, steamed clams are served in a broth alongside bread. While they included the bread, there was no broth. Instead, they served the clams with melted butter and hot water. Either way, it would not have made the clams taste better. The clams were mediocre at best because they were not cleaned properly and had sand in them. The clams were certainly not worth $26. As for the salad, it wasn't necessarily bad, but I had an issue with the price. It is around $20 without the chicken. $28 seems like a steep price for a basic salad with protein. I have the same complaint about the cake. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but it was not $14 for a single slice of cake good. If we weren't celebrating a birthday, we would have skipped out on the cake because of the price. read more

The food here is what you would expect from a tavern. It's not bad and I would not say it's exceptional. My calamari was tasty and cooked perfectly. The pizza, burger, and fries were average. It's not bad, but it's also not exceptional. Is it good? Yes. If you want a waterfront lunch or dinner with decent food and not super expensive, then this place will fit that requirement. They do have an outdoor seating area right over the water. You basically sit on a large dock. The service is great and I am sure it can get busy during the normal mealtimes. Plan accordingly and arrive before lunch or dinner. I did like the decor and the clean restrooms. If you're looking for tavern type meal offerings in a good location, you've found the place. I think their food has gotten better over the years. The personal pizza was baked nicely. The crust was crispy and there was a good amount of white sauce, cheese and toppings evenly spread on each slice. The prawns Diablo was good too. The shrimps were plump and the sauce had a good kick but wasn't too spicy. The clam chowder on the other hand was just okay. The flavor was a bit bland and there wasn't alot of clams and potatoes in the soup. Service has also improved. The servers came more frequently to check on us which I did appreciate. read more

I've been to Katie downs several times and have always had a good experience. However, the last time, it was crowded and the service was slow. We were patient to a point and then had to ask several times for service. If you don't have staff to service us, just let us know and we would've gone somewhere else. The restaurant was super loud and is difficult to hear the person at your table in a normal voice. The fish and chips for two pieces are $32 which is super expensive for even the nice nice restaurants in town and Katie Downs is just kind of basically like a bar on the water. read more

They didn't have a lot on the menu for vegans, but my friend and I customized a few dishes to accommodate our dietary needs. I ordered a taco salad with no cheese, sour cream, or meat, sub a black bean patty. It arrived with cheese, so I spent a while pulling off each strand. The bruschetta was ok. There was a lot more bread than there were tomatoes, and it was quite dry. It wasn't the worst meal, but it just wasn't anything special. Gorgeous view of the water, good service, medicore food, but large price tag. The cheapest food on the menu is close to $20 (appetizers). I've been here a couple times, and have gotten a lunch special with half of a roast beef sandwich and chowder, a Italian Hero sandwich (comes with fries), and a salad ($28 for a salad is outrageous, $20 for lettuce and $8 for chicken!) Tip: you can have any of the pizza on a Portabello mushroom instead of regular crust. If you want to enjoy the nice view, come on a nice day for Happy Hour 4-6PM! This was our first visit. The 7" personal Sicilian pizza and salad was so good. I didn't realize that Philadelphia was known for a deep dish pizza style. The crust was soft and crispy, the sausage spiced well and the sauce zesty. I really like that they make their dressings in house. My husband had the fish and chips.
