WOW! What a great addition to Hyde Park! I love it! We ate outside last night for dinner. The outdoor seating is great, right in the center of the shopping center. It's like a European restaurant! The restaurant is beautiful inside. The staff were all friendly, kind, and helpful. The food was amazing (expensive, but worth it). We had the fish of the day (trout which came with zucchini and tomatoes) and chicken (polletto) which came with mashed potatoes. We also ordered creamed spinach, grilled jumbo asparagus. As well as pasta with tomato sauce for our 2 year old. The chicken was my favorite dish, the sauce was one of the best sauces I've ever had. The trout and zucchini was fantastic as well. The creamed spinach, asparagus, and pasta with tomato sauce were all good. For desert I had chocolate mouse, and it was outstanding. I will definitely return! Kid Friendly 4 stars Baby Friendly 4 stars It was fine to sit outside with a kid. (However be warned there is a toy store next door). Early evening this place would be kid friendly, but it feels too nice inside to be a place I would really call kid friendly. They have high chairs and booster seats. The staff is so lovely (our server lifted my son onto his seat and tied the napkin around him). The bathrooms are single user, they do not have a changing table, but it was spacious and very clean. Who knew?!! The food is delicious! I had lunch here with a friend yesterday. We had drinks first and they were very good. Our meal started with the bread and olive oil, which had crushed red pepper flakes in it - loved it! I ordered the lobster ravioli and my friend had the fish of the day - which was sea bass. We both loved our meals. I usually add Parmesan cheese to my pasta, but the sauce was so flavorful that I didn't need any. My friends fish came with a lemon butter sauce that she forgot to tell them to omit. Once she tasted it, she said it was so good and was glad it was there. I was disappointed in Ascione because I had heard good things about it. The positives: easy to make a reservation and delicious bread. The Negatives: I ordered the braised veal shank, expecting it to be similar to braised short ribs or ossso bucco but got something totally different. It was a big hunk of break with some red and orange peppers and zucchini. The sauce has a string flavor and it was not good. It would have made more sense to use a red wine based sauce and served with a potato and seasonal vegetables. I could have cooked something better at home. It was my birthday and my mom had to ask about a birthday dessert twice before she finally offered it to me. The waitress just didn't communicate well. She was resistant to splitting the checks four ways. We had a party of 8 and needed it to be on different bills. I've been a waitress at four different restaurants, so I know it can be easily done. She made a big deal out of something that should have been simple. The restaurant is also smaller than I expected which meant the noise volume was high. There seemed to only be one bathroom which was odd. I won't be going back anytime soon. If I do, I'll order something else and make sure I get a different server. read more

Ascione has worked hard and adaptably to give us a place to be outside noshing, drinking, reading, working, and even socializing. The table spacing is adequate and if you're at the table with the people you came with you can back up your chair enough to create about six feet of space between yourself and the person across the table; a little less if someone is sitting next to you, but you still aren't crowded. They have three levels of partial enclosure: none, as in you bundle up and sit at a table that is completely outside; moderate, where you sit inside a sort of marquee with one wall open; and one that looks pretty seriously enclosed, a sort of room built out of the wall by the entrance. The staff are cosmopolitan, patient, accepting and flexible. AND the place has heat torches. The food is perfectly fine, but these days I don't see food as being the main point. I just cherish the opportunity to be a flaneuse and read in cafes without taking my life into my hands. Highlights of the menu for a grazer like me: mimosas and a side of lox on the weekend. Highlights of the overall experience: watching a storm slamming the marquee earlier this fall through the clear plastic panel behind me. read more

I ordered pennoni and my husband had lobster ravioli. The portion of pennoni was great. There was lots of meat and I loved the flavor of the roasted red pepper and onion. Same for my husband. The ravioli was so soft and had a generous portion of filling. The only thing we would've loved was for the bread to be warmed before bringing it to the table. It makes such a big difference! This is my long overdue review for the latest addition to the Hyde Park restaurant scene. Ascione is a classy place with delicious food and attentive service. We are regulars, and our favorites are the crab cakes, the fish specials, the Mediterranean salad on the lunch menu ($15 with chicken, salmon or steak!), the brussel sprouts, the AMAZING burger, and quite possibly, their entire brunch menu. Drinks are top shelf as are desserts. One thing we appreciate is that you can eat here very reasonably or choose one of their fresh specials, which consistently change. As someone with food allergies, I have always felt happily accommodated, and it's also kid-friendly. The patio is gorgeous and cool, even on the hottest days, as well as dog-friendly. Parking is easy (free in parking lot by Trader Joe's) and nearly immediate access to the Metra and buses. ***This place should get a special mention for what they are doing during the pandemic: disposable menus, staff all wear face masks, meticulous cleaning, tables spaced apart, etc. There is a completely false review that indicates otherwise, but it could not be further from the truth.
