The seating was comfortable and the ambiance was fine. They have comfy booths and banquettes that feel welcoming. We had a 6:30 table for 5, though, and definitely felt rushed through courses by the waiter. At one point he actually told us to hurry up and finish our salads and apps because the food was ready. I've never been bullied to finish food before in a restaurant, and it raised (my) eyebrows. The servers wanted to snatch away our plates before we finished, although nobody was lingering. The food was good, though the sauce was terrifically salty. We ordered two bottles of great wine. The short ribs were gigantic and delish. The frutti de mare was fine, though one of my mussels tasted cautionary, and there were unopened clams I skipped. The Caesar salad was excellent, tangy, and perfectly tossed in dressing and Parmesan without feeling overdressed. The chicken dishes looked huge and well sauced. Everyone finished everything. Great that service was attentive, but the pressure to gulp down a large and expensive meal quickly was uncomfortable, and means we probably won't be back. I came for brunch. The restaurant is on the smaller side so seating is a bit tight. This service was good. They explained the menu well. And the food was pretty good too. I had the bistro breakfast sandwich. It was very filling, the potatoes and salad that came with it were really good too. My friend ordered the steak and eggs and also said it was really good. I've been here for dinner several times. It gets better every time. This is a cozy neighborhood place with exceptional food and service. We were there last Saturday night and started with the octopus, which was perfectly seasoned and grilled. We shared the Steak Florentine special, which was also delicious. Even if you are staying up in the central part of the city (loop, river north), it's worth the trip down to Hyde Park to enjoy this gem. read more

We had a fabulous meal yesterday at Ascione Bistro. We had 4 different dishes and enjoyed them all. (Gnocci, Crab Cakes, Sausage & Peppers, and the pasta special (Spinach pasta with shrimp). They also had a variety of Gluten Free options. Our server, Jose, was attentive and professional. When he overheard us mention that one of our party was celebrating a birthday, he brought us delicious Tiramisu to share! The restaurant is clean and cozy. We were able to hold a conversation without raising our voices. It's also located on a very cute outdoor mall-type area that is decorated for the Holidays and has a variety of shops. In Chicago, in November, on Thanksgiving why are guests still being seated in the tent? The heat lamps could not compensate for the draft coming under the large gap between the "wall" of the tent and the cold pavement. We live in the neighborhood and eat here often. The food and service were very good as usual but we could not enjoy our meal due to being uncomfortably cold. The "feels like" temp in Chicago today was 19 degrees. The only reason we stayed was because we were guests of my 85+ year old MIL that was hosting the meal as our family Thanksgiving. I am very disappointed that management decided to take more reservations than the main dining room could accommodate. If the tent is going to be used year round then patrons should be offered blankets at a minimum. read more

Ascione is on the south side in Hyde Park and it delivered a good experience. Italian done very well. Sadly I have not had any of the pastas yet. The Veal Shank was done perfectly. Decent Italian food. We visited Bistro Ascione on a Friday night, and it was busy but there were tables available. House music played that was hard to hear over the buzz of conversation. I ordered the gnocchi to eat and the red sangria to drink. Before we ordered, a server brought out bread with olive oil. Our food ended up arriving before our drinks. The sauce was uninspired although the gnocchi was almost perfectly cooked. The sangria was drinkable, but I have tried better. After we finished the first serving of bread, we were offered a second serving of bread. We accepted the offer, but were never provided with the additional bread. Overall, we had a reasonable time at Ascione Bistro, but we have certainly had better dining experiences. read more

I have tried so many dishes there, but what blows me away everytime are the crabcakes...they are the best I've ever had - they are so fresh, and with such an impressive amount of lump crab in them. Ascione never misses the spot! Their food is SO good all around. I've had their pasta and truffle fries in a previous visit last year which was really good and this year I came for breakfast and was amazed once again. The French toast was absolutely amazing, although I will note that the chocolate doesn't really feel like Nutella and more like chocolate syrup. However, it still tastes really good. We ate at Ascione Bistro for Valentine's Day 2022 and had a great time. We had a reservation so we were seated immediately. The waiter was a little persistent about mentioning the 90 minute dining limit but other than that the service was good! The House Meatballs are SO GOOD. An order consists of two meatballs but they're so hearty, you might start to fill up once you're done lol. The Pennoni dish is so flavorful with the spicy sausage as the clear favorite. The pork chop is a large portion and probably best if you share it; the prosciutto stuffed inside is a nice touch. For dessert, I HIGHLY recommend the Apple Torte. The salted caramel ice cream is the perfect accompaniment. We definitely would come back to Ascione! read more

We've been here three times, most recently for dinner, which was great with a few exceptions: 1) the pork chop is VERY salty, tastes like it was injected with brine, so just know that going in; 2) my friend ordered the lemon mascarpone cake, which was GREAT - so good, in fact, that I ordered a slice to take home. Imagine my surprise when I later opened the box to find a small, thin slice that was half the size of my friend's. I have tried to message them on Insta about this and gotten no reply. So just a heads-up, everyone: check your to-go order before you go. We might go back, might not. I made a reservation for 6:30 PM, as the restaurant strongly encourages reservations. However, when I arrived, we could not be seated. We were told the people at our reserved table had finished eating but were still drinking. I was offered a seat outside, but I declined -- when I made the reservation, I specifically selected indoor seating. It was also cold outside, and my guest did not want to sit there either. Rather than encouraging the table occupants to wrap up their visit, the staff allowed them to stay and even brought them a dessert menu, despite the fact that they had already finished their meals and had boxed up their leftovers. At that point, we had already been waiting for 15-20 minutes. I asked if we could be seated at an unoccupied indoor table, but was told it was reserved for a party at 7:30 PM -- a full hour after we had arrived. We continued to wait. Only after the original table finally got up to leave were we seated, and at a different table than originally reserved. To be fair, this is not my first time dining here, and I have never encountered this problem before. The food and the servers were excellent, as always. However, I don't feel that this situation was handled well by the hostess, and it put a damper on the overall experience. read more

Baby the ONLY complaint I have is that I can get the Eggs Benedict with short ribs during the week! I chose this place specifically to try this dish and I was NOT disappointed! The eggs and short ribs were cooked perfectly and the hollandaise was excellent! I also had the rosemary potatoes and they were great as well! I ordered a fruity paradise something or other drink that I forget the name of, but I wasn't feeling it. It DEFINITELY did have a kick though. I just didn't care for the flavor. Our server talked us into dessert and I chose the creme brulee. Amazing! Make sure to make a reservation or get there super early. We got there not long after opening on a Sunday and the inside was half filled already and had a wait time. We opted to sit in the enclosed patio. By the time we left, the inside was packed and they were starting to seat on the patio also. 100% will be going back. read more

The lobster bisque was impeccable; it had a very creamy taste and was seasoned to perfection. The Caesar salad was mediocre. The bread service was terrible; it was oven-burnt, and we only received one serving, despite being there for over an hour. The paella was forgettable and not very flavorful; the chicken didn't taste fresh, although the mashed potatoes were tasty and creamy. The linguine ai frutti di mare was also forgettable. The mussels were a nice touch, but I wouldn't order it again. We did not receive a welcoming vibe from the hostess from the moment we walked in. This is my 2nd review for this place. The first time I did carryout but we decided to dine 'in' under heat lamps with a tent on a 45-50 degree Sunday evening. The parking was easy as they are near a shopping complex. Despite one party sitting a 'little' too close and a patron offering to take our pictures with our phone (heck no!) they were very good with staying 6 feet apart and wearing masks. We got the arugala/radicchio and striped beet salads, pasta with boar meat, and a petite steak with crab meat on a cream sauce. The wine, bread and tiramisu birthday were awesome additions! Enjoyed a late lunch at this very well run restaurant. The service was exceptional. Very little wait after being seated and our server cheerful and helpful. I did not have hamburger on my mind as I often do, but that is what I ordered. In every respect it had to be one of the best. From the bun to the double patties it was mouth watering. The fries were beautifully seasoned and made an excellent accompaniment to the burger. Ascione Bistro is located in the Hyde Park shopping center on 55th St. Once we sat down, I recall looking at every table and everyone seemed very happy about being in the space and of course the food on their table. I saw there was a Pappardelle al Sugo di Cinghiale on the menu which is papparadelle in a wild boar and mushroom ragout...loved it! Drinks were great as well...unfortunately I do not remember the names but see posted pics. I have a friend that lives nearby and she loves this joint so I took the chance to come by for brunch as it had been a year since I was here. It was one of the last decent days outside so we sat outside in front. The Bistro Breakfast Sandwich was very big and pretty good! The very huge sandwich came with roasted potatoes and arugula. While I enjoyed my meal, the mimosa setup was where its at here. Bottomless mimosas at $18 which is dope and they give you different juices..grapefruit, pomegranate and pineapple. I would highly recommend Ascione for brunch! The brunch menu here has a unique Italian twist to classic items. I can't remember the exact name of what I ordered, but it was essentially an Italian version of shakshuka with Parmesan cheese and a tomato based sauce. This dish was amazing! A beautifully appointed terrace awaited us at the restaurant. The atmosphere and sunshine were perfect. My husband enjoyed the smash burger from beginning to end. I ordered the Arancini ball stuffed with mushrooms. It was divine with a capital D. I added a salad of arugula and radicchio to follow, which was absolutely perfect. The atmosphere and interior of the restaurant showed beautiful and thoughtful attention to details, which is rare today. We will definitely come back. Fyi. I got the soup of the day which was mushroom and it was the best part of my whole meal. I got the stuffed pork chop as my entree. It was barely stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella. I was very disappointed since that was the whole point of the dish. I had to ask for lemon one too many times for my water. And my credit card came back with greasy finger prints all over it. Which is unsanitary because what if you were serving my entree instead of my card back. No the greasy hands were not mine. There was grease all over the check book and receipts as well.
