I've been going to Alejandro for almost five years. I have a short, very technical bob haircut, and Alejandro is a PRO. I have really thin, fine hair, and have had short hair for 25 years. Before moving to Asheville I lived in San Francisco and New York, and had my hair cut by the creative director at one of the world's top salons. I feel so lucky to have found Alejandro, who traveled the country teaching for Bumble and Bumble before moving to Asheville. He is truly a gem! I was butchered at this salon by Liam Carey recently. Before booking an appointment, I made an appointment for a consultation to make sure he and I were on the same page. The receptionist wrote it down for the wrong day. When I got there, he was finishing a cut. When I finally saw him, I had only five minutes to show him the shag cut and color I wanted. Otherwise I would be late for my next appointment. Of the pictures I showed him, he said two were doable. See photos below. The next day I had my appointment. He did the color first. That turned out fine. When he did the cut, he did the overall shape and then started to dry it. I asked him when he was going to do the shag part. He said after he dried it. He dried it in a very meticulous way that I would never do myself. I had told him that it needed to look good air dried and scrunched. And then instead of cutting the layers of the shag, he focused solely on thinning out the undermost layer of my hair. When I pointed out that I had thin hair and slice cutting and thinning shears were not good ways to cut my hair, he got irritated and told me to trust him. So I stopped talking. After he finished buthchering me, he started complimenting his own handiwork. When I didn't join in the praise, he raised his voice and started whining about how I was making HIM feel bad. And I found myself apologizing to him just to get him to calm down. Then he said I should come in after I washed it and styled it myself, which I told him I would do. Three days later, my appendix burst. I was in the hospital for five days. When I recovered, I sent the owner an email with photos of the hair cuts Liam said he would copy as well as a photo of my hair after I washed and styled it. His response was that there was obviously a miscommunication and that he was going to do nothing. When I told him it was frizzy and frayed and that I assumed he would either offer to fix it or refund my money, he accused me of being rude to his employees. He also said the frizzinessness was due to lack of product. I replied that I used a styling spray before blow drying and a smoothing serum after. I was just a bad cut. It is all ends! Furthermore, I can assure you that firmly pointing out that an appointment time was written down wrong and informing a professional what kind of haircut techniques work for me after 67 years of having my hair cut is not rude. So in addition to giving me a crappy haircut, they violated their own policy of fixing it which is clearly stated on their website. When I told him this matter was not over, he responded by accusing me of threatening to harm his employees. I replied that he sounded unhinged and that what I meant to do was set up a dispute with my credit card company and write a bad review. So not only can I not give a positive review to this haircutter, I have to pan the entire salon for how I was treated. read more

@ren_hair_salon YOU R A QUEEN ! Photos of the hair in all its glory, it's been 3 whole months. First video is when it was first done all the rest have been throughout the 3 months span. The red color hasn't faded, the ends did overtime but the blend is fabulous and it looks like it's meant to be this warm tone brown/coper. I also requested a butterfly cut/ curtain bangs usually people just chop two strings and done but Ren did a good job and I'm happy with it! This was my first time going here and I'm happy I chose Ren she's also really fun and sweet has a great personality to work with. Can't wait to go back I am obsessed with my hair & so is everyone else. This is what my hair looked like after booking and paying for a 250$ all over blond highlight at Ashes and Steele. The process took 3.5 hrs and my hair is all dried out and frizzy now and has way less blond highlights and dimension than when I walked into their salon. Ashes & Steel is a new hair salon in the River Arts District, right across the street from Vivian Restaurant. I think they opened about a year ago. The place is ahhhhmazing. High ceilings, bright and airy, gorgeous modern decor. They have excellent products including Oribe, a luxury hair line that I really like. They also work with Wella products, another great line of products. I made an appointment with Shelly for balayage and a haircut. She took the time to go over all the options, products, results etc. I loved both balayage and haircut. Very natural. Just the way I wanted. Haven't stopped crying. Made the mistake of going with the stylist's suggestion rather than what I knew I wanted. I figured, this is one of the nicest (and most expensive) salons in Asheville, they must know what they're doing. I asked for warm, bright chestnut brown (with lots of references and photos) and walked out with almost black red hair. I had to make an emergency second appointment elsewhere to fix my hair. Prior to arriving I received reminders and appointment confirmations well in advance along with cancellation policy, absolutely loved this. Please don't go here! I hate leaving a review like this but I have to help other people know that, while it's a beautiful salon with great service, they WILL NOT listen to what you want. I've never had such a horrible haircut in my entire life. It's been 2-3 weeks since I had my hair cut by Chloe (and then "fixed" by Alejandro) and I still can't get over how absolutely awful my hair looks and how much I hate it. I feel so uncomfortable in my skin. It's so bad I can't stop thinking about it constantly. I asked Chloe for curtain bangs and long layers (I even showed her multiple photos of what I wanted) and she cut my hair straight across the back and weird chunky bangs that hit my right in the corners of my eyes. They looked horrible and were so uneven I had to ask her to cut them to even them out multiple times. She'd trim a bit but it wasn't ever great or even. When I went to pay I asked the front desk if there was anything they could do to help me because my hair looked so bad and was nothing like I had asked. The woman told me Alejandro, one of the co-owners, could help me, which was so kind of him. He finished foiling a woman's hair and came and tried to fix my hair after I explained what I wanted to him as well (also showing him the photos. Pics of Matilda Djerf's curtain bangs mostly) and then Chloe came to watch and learn. He literally gave me a mix between bangs, a shag, and a mullet. When he was done I was so sick to my stomach that I said it looked great and ran to the bathroom to keep myself from crying. I was just frozen and completely embarrassed of how bad my hair looked. I just don't know how you can see curtain bangs and give someone a shag mullet thing. Plus he took a razor to my hair and sliced down from my roots to my ends giving me weird piecey bangs that I have no clue how to hide. It's absolutely awful and I will never ever go there again. Ever. Please don't waste your time or money here. They are sweet sweet people but this hair cut has completely traumatized me and made me feel more insecure than I've ever felt in my life. read more

This is the most sophisticated and high-end salon currently in Asheville. Best haircut and color for my naturally light blonde hair I've ever had! I always book with Shelly; she is incredibly intuitive, and has a natural talent for helping clients choose the right cut and color. Also, she is delightful to chat with while she works. I am naturally a light blonde, but I always like to get highlights, and I was about to give up on finding someone who can actually handle naturally light blonde hair - and then I met Shelly! Shelly did such an amazing job, that I also recommended my mother to her, and my mom got the best haircut and color of her life. I had never seen her smile as much as she did after Shelly fixed her hair and spun the chair around! I met both the owners who were extremely warm and grateful for my business. I was called nasty, a spoiled brat, childish, whiny and a drunk? by the owner of Ashes and Steel hair salon. That's what almost $500 can get you there. I had a 4hr color appointment that didn't included haircut or blow dry (I walked out of there with wet hair) and my hair didn't turned out quite right. You can see the owner's response below when I told him about what I experienced at his salon. I went to my appointment. They asked if I wanted something to drink. They offer wine as a part of their complementary beverages and I decided to enjoy a glass of wine while getting my hair done as many customers do. After seating for 2hrs I was asked if I would like something else to drink and with 2 more hours to go I said I would take another glass of wine. They didn't said no but when the girl put the glass down she said "just so you know you won't be getting more wine after this" (I wouldn't even ask for a third glass anyway). After being told that, I didn't even touched the second glass since I felt very uncomfortable by the way I was addressed. I shared this with the salon owners and I told them that I hoped me sharing this experience would bring to their attention how important customer service is, especially in the service/business industry. The response of Alejandro one of the owners was to call me nasty, spoiled brat, whiny and a drunk? (See picture below)it is important to point out that the amount of wine in the glass was only 3oz and I only had 1 glass (I took a picture of the glass and I did some measuring when I got home). This situation is unacceptable. I guess some business owners want your money but not your feedback...also, I didn't waste my time responding to his email. Very disappointed ! Gary does a good job but they are overpriced. Alejandro has a fragile overinflated ego just like the the other review says. I paid Gary $350.00 to color my hair. He did a beautiful job. One week later, Alejandro used a product to straighten my hair and did not warn me it could a alter the color of my hair. It turned my hair a brassy orange color and then charged me $350.00 for the process. Everything Gary did was ruined. Alejandro overinflates his skill and experience. Not what one would expect from his website write up. You might want to verify that Alejandro was indeed a " stylist who trained other stylists " as he claims on his website. I did that and was told something completely different 3 times. Are they friendly? Yes. They are very friendly. And while they are smiling at your face, well, I will let you imagine what they are stabbing into your back. read more

Let me start off by saying I NEVER leave negative reviews, in fact this is the first one I have ever left. I read the fantastic reviews about this salon and chose to book an appt. based on that. The people are very nice and the salon is beautiful. However, my experience was a NIGHTMARE. I have NBR extensions due to losing my hair in Dec 2017 due to chemotherapy for Lupus. I met with "Sasha" and STRESSED to her ahead of time that my hair had a tendency to pull very brassy blonde and I had had this trouble in the past with stylists not using a high enough volume, but then toning it. Which is fine, until you wash it a few times. She looked at my hair and ASSURED me this wouldn't be a problem. She broke down the price (which was high, but what I would expect at a high-end salon) so it was fine, and I signed it. After sitting for SIX (6) HOURS (during which time she did not color my extensions) just my shoulder length hair, she assured me the blonde was a pretty color and she had lifted it enough that if the toner did wash out - it wouldn't be an issue. Towards the very end - prior to rinsing my hair she told me she'd be charging me for a color correction (but didn't tell me how much that would be) - Additionally, this salon charges $55 to blow dry your hair after coloring it (which I think is crazy - I have been to several high end salons and haven't experienced having to pay for a blow dry when getting color.) In any event, it was dark and wet and I could not tell what it looked like. I was distressed about sitting for 6 hours for my hair. She charged me $350 for color ONLY, no blow out, no cut, and I left her a sizable tip. Upon coming home and drying my hair I realized it looked orange. I waited several days as she told me to to wash it and I saturated it in Matrix Brass Off Mask and Pureology Purple Shampoo. I then realized in horror that I had orange hair. MUCH worse than what I started with. I asked for a bright, ashy, blended look blonde. I contacted the salon, I explained that Sasha was sweet, that I hate complaining, and that I felt bad as I know it was't her intention to turn my hair orange and YES they offered to have Gary fix it. However, I am a full-time doctoral student, I work, have 2 children, care for 2 sick grandparents, and have an adopted son with down syndrome. I didn't have any time in my schedule to come in. Additionally, after getting my hair done my son had to have emergency surgery and is recovering from that. I asked for a refund after sending them pictures of my hair. Furthermore, I DIDN'T FEEL ENCOURAGED TO RETURN TO THIS SAME SALON to have my hair fixed after they did this. They told me they would only refund me the difference in the amount I was told I would be charged and the color correction. I did not feel like that was satisfactory to have to pay anything for orange hair or take more time out of my PACKED schedule to have it fixed. They refused. I told them I would be posting a negative review and not recommending their salon to the countless people I know in Asheville. They then responded that they would be "DISCONTINUING CONTACT WITH ME" for threatening them. I have heard nothing regarding my partial refund. I made NO threats other than leaving a negative review that is highly warranted. If they would have simply refunded me I would not be writing this extensive review. I will attach a picture of my hair. Anyone who requests an ashy bright blonde from a Level 3 stylist and pays $350 plus a hefty tip and receives this.... wow is all I can say about this place. I am so upset and it is so much worse than what I started with after being fully assured MULTIPLE times it would be a beautiful blonde with NO brass. read more

My color is always seamless and beautiful (even 3 days later I'm not complaining, and I honestly have with everyone else I've ever gone to)!
