Asia Gourmet is a fast food Chinese restaurant that is walking distance to Oak Grove train station. There is a small parking lot directly in front of the restaurant. You can easily drive past the restaurant because it appear more like a residential home than a business. When you walk inside, you can't help but feel like the first floor of a residential home was cut out and made into a make shift business. There is a counter for ordering with an open kitchen behind the counter where food is prepared, and to your left is a small narrow seating area for diners. The space is tight with two small tables and about six chairs. We had our food to go. The service was very friendly and food was prepared quickly. To my disappointment, every dish including the bubble tea was sub par. The bubble tea was probably the worst I have ever had. We ended up throwing it away as no one wanted it. It was also expensive at $4.75. For appetizer I ordered the duck bao. This was expensive at $8.75 for two pieces, so a little over $4 per piece. What you get is shredded duck meat with some skin, thinly sliced cucumbers, and green onions. The shredded duck meat was dry and the cucumber not fresh. This was not to my expectations at all. The steamed chicken with scallion sauce rice plate was what had led us to this restaurant. I was looking up restaurants that served Hainese chicken and rice. Normally we would go to Penang or Hong Kong Eatery in Chinatown. To our disappointment, the chicken had very little meat and the rice was plain. It really does not stack up to the places I have had this dish at. We also ordered a braised beef and bean curd rice plate. The dish was okay but the flavor had a sweetness to it. I ate all of the vegetables and the tea egg that came with the meal but couldn't take more than two bites. The same was true with the house lo mein. To our disappointment, the noodle was excessively oily. I couldn't eat that either. I ended up giving my entire dinner to my brother to take home since we knew we would not be eating the food even as leftovers. I honestly wanted to like this place because the person who serviced us was so friendly. But there were clues everywhere. One of the clues, I heard the sound of a microwave going off in the kitchen while waiting for our food to be prepared. I didn't care about the interior which was cramp and dirty. I didn't care about the cheap plastic decor and all the things that was normally have me grab a menu and walk right back out the door. Yelp reviews were overwhelmingly favorable so I boldly ordered away. I really wanted another quick dinner option since this restaurant is not too far of a drive from where I live. But everything about the meal left me highly disappointed and to the point where I can't even give this place a second chance. I am really sorry, this is a no for me. read more

I really have a soft spot for this homey takeout joint. It's Americanized Chinese food done so right and served by the nicest lady ever. My friends who live nearby had always raved about both the food and the service, but I experienced it firsthand a couple of weeks ago when I finally ordered takeout from them. The food was packaged with care and still very warm when I got home. My spicy General Gao's was actually a little spicy, and after getting over the initial surprise, I was immediately won over. The sauce wasn't too sweet, the meat was tender dark meat, and the coating was nice and crispy. Perfect. The fried rice was also pretty tasty and a better alternative to what is often just stale-tasting old rice tossed in too much oil at other restaurants. My husband and I came back a week later and got an order of sesame chicken and chicken with broccoli. Both were really nicely done. The chicken with broccoli was very garlicky and had a more authentic taste than what I'm used to from Chinese takeout restaurants. Best of all, they even threw in a couple of crab rangoons (my friends say this is not uncommon), and I'm so glad they did, because they were the best crab rangoons I've ever had. I'll definitely be ordering those again. What really earns them that 5th star though is the service. It appears that they've transformed their takeout window since COVID-19 to be totally contactless, but you still get a big smile and extremely kind service from the lady at the window. She makes my day every time, and that really keeps me coming back as well. I wish we had given this place a shot earlier than this, as we're now moving. Don't be like us! read more

I live close by to Asia Gourmet and I'm so happy that I do because it's such a hidden gem! The food portions are large and the prices are pretty affordable! The owner is super sweet and have given us extra food when the wait is longer than expected! Beyond the regular Americanized Chinese takeout, there are also several authentic dishes. I am sorry to do this, but I feel like I had to balance out the 5 star reviews that dominated this page. I also hate to do this, because the people who work there couldn't be nicer. But it is a bit unrealistic that this restaurant currently has the highest rating of any chinese restaurant in the area. It simply doesn't deserve it. I am giving it 3 stars, which is an average based on the several times I've eaten there. I have probably ordered from them 4 times or so. The first few were decent. Not amazing, but solid enough for me to come back. Their food is great value for money in terms of quantity and they are one of the few places in the area that would do combo platters, which is great. The style is generally your classic Chinese American fare, with a few unusual items mixed in (though I think their menu has shrinked a bit since Covid started). But where in the past I probably would have given them 4 stars, my last meal there was pretty atrocious. Almost unbearably salty food (almost every part of it) and Lo Mein that was swimming in oil (I get that Lo Mein is often oily, but this soaked through the bag and all over the counter and still had enough oil left to fill the bottom of the takeout dish). I'm going to give them an average of 3 stars, but my last experience makes me wary of returning. Who knows though, maybe you'll have a better time with them than I recently did. And maybe I'll be tempted back by the prospect of a reasonably priced combo dish. read more

General Gai chicken is slightly sweet and spicy, deep fried with starchy batter similar to sesame chicken which I find too American Chinese. Ordered through ubereats. Everything was terrible. The chicken and broccoli had so much sauce it was spilling out the side. The white rice had black seeds in it that looked like mouse terds. It was probably a spice because they were all clustered in the middle but I'm not convinced. See picture below. You be the judge. I came here for a second time, this time trying the other offerings. I got the Pad Thai for there and the proclaimed Beef Brisket Noodle Soup to go. The Pad Thai was on the spot. Not at all oily, lots of peanuts and scallions, large shrimp, chewy noodles and the crunchy bean sprouts really made my tummy happy. The lime on the side allowed me to squeeze as much citrus as I liked. I really also appreciated the wax paper underneath the plate to soak up any excess oil, though there was barely any once finished. The Beef Brisket Noodle Soup was not a joke either. Even though it was cold by the time I got home, a quick reheat of the soup in the microwave brought the broth back to life. Adding the noodles, vegetables, and beef into the soup added more flavor and delicious. Again, not oily and very filling. Awesome place! We loved coming here for their scallion steamed chicken and scallion pie. The chicken was so juicy and tender, nice blend of scallion and sweet soy sauce to make the chicken so much more flavorful after all the chicken was steamed and it's own flavor was very subtle and nice. We also loved the dumplings we ordered, at first we thought we ordered too much food for only two grown ups and a 6 year old. It was not the case, we finished it all and ordered another round of dumplings and scallion pie. The scallion pie itself was so flaky and filled with scallion, got a really nice flavor to it. The ginger sauce that goes with it was to die for. We could literally drink it straight it was so good, a little spicy and sweet with very natural ginger flavor. You could still see the bits of ginger in the sauce. We wanted to buy a couple more of the ginger sauce they just gave them to us for free. Very friendly staff! I decided to try this place out after reading good reviews online, and I'm glad I did! I got take out but the service was INCREDILY friendly, the owner is literally the sweetest lady ever. I got some scallion pancakes that I didn't order and figured it was just an accident, but after reading other reviews it seems she does this often. I got a good amount of food for a pretty low price, and everything was delicious! Particularly the lo mein, crab Rangoon, the general gaos, and eggrolls. Ok. We ordered from AG after seeing the vast options available on their menu for lunch. I mean... Chocolate Chip Pancakes served at a Chinese Restaurant? Didn't know what to expect... Anyway, the cheesy rangoons that arrived were good but the bed of veggie lo mein it was nested on tasted bland with one note. Also, their Vietnamese beef sandwich lacked the smokiness we're familiar with too in a traditional banh mi. Did I forget to mention the bread wasn't even toasted? 2 thumbs up for the roti pancake though - accompanied with a curry and potato sauce. Surprisingly good takeout place right across the street from Oak Grove station. This is starting to become a routine: I trudge off the T at Oak Grove, start to unlock my bike and then gaze thoughtfully across the street to the bright red sign glowing over the door to Asia Gourmet. A minute later I'm standing at the counter. "Hello my friend!" says the owner. We exchange greetings and then I do something I never normally do at any other Chinese takeout place. "I'm hungry, but I don't know for what." "Oh, what you want is maybe pad Thai," she says, pointing to the list of specials written out on a folding signboard near the counter. "Or curry with potatoes and rice." "Yes," I say without hesitation. "Curry IS what I'd like." And you know what? Whatever I bring home is good. I do recommend the beef brisket soup. There's a reason it's almost always sold out -- it's rich, full of flavor, and warms you up. I like all of the "standard" takeout dishes I've tried so far: Mongolian beef, General Tso's chicken, house fried rice, lo mein, you name it. There are items on the specials menu that are good too, including Vietnamese-style pho. I haven't tried their breakfast menu items yet -- scratch that, I have tried the congee with chicken and it was good, nice texture. But I haven't tried their pancakes yet, although when I was sitting in their small dining area waiting on an order, I chatted with a customer who recommended them. Appetizers are all just as expected -- the pan-fried dumplings are spot on, and the scallion pancakes are decent. A real standout is their ginger soy sauce for the dumplings. I get it with the scallion pancakes too, because it's good. Add Asia Gourmet to the list of above-average Chinese restaurants beginning to spring up in the Malden area. With the added advantage of being located steps from the Orange Line, and in a good spot to quickly deliver to houses and apartments in the Oak Grove neighborhood and adjacent Melrose. read more

Not at all greasy the several times that I've tried them. They have a smaller menu than I'm use to but what they do have is very yummy. My special favorites here are the dumplings and the soup. I have to say, I'm REALLY impressed with how yummy the dumplings are and is great that they don't drop grease like many of the other local places. You can even taste the ginger in the ginger-soy sauce the dumplings come with unlike so many places that just give you liquid salt. They're very small (only a couple tiny tables) so it's not a place that I'd *go* to dinner but they're perfect for take-out and they offer delivery. read more

Small, divey restaurant that was exactly what I needed. Great value and the chicken lo mein was 100% satisfactory. They lady that was working there was extremely charming and polite. I waited probably about 10 mins to get my food. I dined in because I was on a break from work. There is limited seating if you dine in (which i'm sure most people don't choose to dine in for quick, cheap cuisine like this) but it's comfortable as there is a TV on as well. I love little places like this where you can go in and spend less than $10 and get filled up. Your $10 definitely goes a lot further than spending it at a fast food restaurant.
