First time visiting Asian 1 as I am extremely picky about my Asian-inspired food. Started with the chicken lettuce wrap appetizer, and it was large enough that it could have been enough for both of us for dinner. Good portion and flavor. My husband had the house Saki, and it was served at the correct warm temperature. I had the yellow curry and brown rice; my husband had Mongolian beef. His was well-spiced, mine was spicy but not overly so. The only drawback was that the vegetables in the curry were cut in such large pieces that the carrots were slightly too raw for my tastes. Don't be fooled like we were for years - this is a VERY unassuming location! Once inside, you are transported to Asia, with exciting menu items from Chinese to Thai and a wonderful Sushi selection. They also have a full bar, and expertly stocked with selections that complement the wide variety of offerings - including imported beers and sake. I definitely love the sushi that is served from Sun-Wed (or Thurs). The service is usually consistently slow. It took our waitress 50-60 minutes before we received our sushi, but definitely worth the wait. This is not a fast dining experience so expect to stay for a bit. Jenn Justice emailed me about my first review apologizing for our service and meal. She was very kind and asked us to come give them another chance. Because of her response, my partner and I decided to give Asian 1 another try. I am really glad we did. We started with the Vegetable Egg Rolls. They were amazing and crisp. My fiancée, Jacklyn, loved the handmade plumb sauce. I ordered the Pad Ke Mao with tofu (3 stars) it was delicious! I've had this dish many times at other locations and this one has to be top 3 for me. Jacklyn ordered the Honey Prawns (3 stars). She was blown away by the flavors of this dish. She said she wished she had ordered it at our first visit. I tried a piece of her broccoli with the sauce and agreed. We decided to get dessert this time. I had the Tempura Ice Cream and Jacklyn had the Cheesecake. Both dishes were perfect and a great end to the meal. I am really thankful for Jenn Justice for asking us to come back. I wanted to like this place. The menu sounded good, reviews were good - no such luck. 1. The tea was Stash - whatever happened to generic oriental restaurant tea. 2. The spring rolls (mistakenly called egg rolls in the menu) were tasteless. 3. Ordered the rice noodles with vegetables and got a bowl of soup. The noodles were rice, good, but since they were extra wide and sitting in a soy/rice vinegar/sesame oil sort of broth, they were gummy. The vegetables were fresh but the spice was all in the broth. On many fronts, not as expected. The level of heat was timid to say the least. 4. The other person at our table ordered the veg and tofu and it was totally tasteless. 5. The server seemed annoyed at us not loving the food. If you like Americanized oriental food, you will probably love this place. For us, another place not to go to. read more

This was my 2nd visit to Asian 1. The first was a late lunch, this time being dinner. The service has something to be desired. I was told by the company that invited me that this was not the "normal" crew as they frequent here. I ordered the orange chicken which when upon presentation looked nothing like the photo on the menu. The chicken was battered, deep fried and dry when placed before me. I asked (twice) for a sweet and sour type of sauce and I was told it would be $4 for about what was 4oz of watery sweet sauce equalling sugar and soy sauce of the sort. I then dove in expecting tender chicken - what I bit into was a hard piece of leather. Disappointing! This reminds me of the frozen battered chicken strips you buy at the grocery store that have been cooked and left out on the stove for a few hours. The broccoli, carrots and celery were also undercooked and unedible. The Thai tea and the company was the best part of the visit. I had asked for a separate check for my meal and when my part of the bill came I was charged $27! The waiter had taken it upon himself to charge me for half of my company's appetizers. I did not order these!! I asked him why it was on my bill and he said he thought I was going to eat some of them and split the cost!?!?! Really?? The party I was with had paid the entire cost of the same appetizers on their bill. They were humble and we packed up and left. The food is overpriced and the service was lacking this evening. Don't let the generic name fool you, this place is good to go! The decor is well done, nice wood tables and seats. The other possible turn off besides the name is that they do multiple cuisines, and although I didn't try each, I can tell you they have an excellent Thai Panang chicken. I'm happy to say, my dining experience was fantastic! It's a four spork event! I was concerned that the last dining experience was indicative of a slow spiral toward the drain, but not so! I sampled a lot. Of course I had to try Pad Thai with chicken...the dish that left me sad last time. The flavor and quality was right on target and there was plenty of chicken. Additionally, I ordered the crab and chicken fried rice which offered subtle flavors and was delicious. The side of crab was moist, not salty and definitely a bargain at under 13.00. Lastly, I tried the chicken sate. Although moist and tender, the flavors were not to my liking, but that is purely a personal preference of flavor profile. It was a little bland and flat tasting to me. Since I have so many allergies, I was unable to sample the sauce that came with it. The staff was great. Service was fast, accurate, and friendly. Asian 1 is an overpriced attempt to serve all types of asian food under the same roof. It doesn't work. While the decor is pleasing to the eye and the place is very clean the food just plain isn't very good. They like to load up the plate with cheap veggies to make the portions seem big. We gave this restaurant two more tries and it is now the caliber of Bellingham. Food delicious and service excellent. We enjoyed it so much the first time we went back, that we went back two weeks later. We could not have been more pleased. WAY too expensive Weekend lunch! Two of us each had 1 entree, no drinks or extras, and our bill was $30!! On the other hand, we had eaten in their Mount Vernon location for weekday lunch and they have a wonderful lunch, which includes salad and soup, as well as rice (which costs you $1 per bowl extra on the weekend) and our total bill for 2 was less than $20. The weekend menu includes about the same size entree as the weekday lunch, but doesn't come with anything else for $12.50 plus the extra dollar for rice! read more

I was glad they were open this Saturday because my two go-to Thai places were closed and I was craving Tom Kha (coconut soup) Soup. Unfortunately, their version is insanely sweet.. I got a 2/4 spice level, shoulda got higher.. it seemed like it was sweetened with maple syrup, my lips were even sticky after eating it from how sweetened if was. I usually love Tom Kha for the coconut, lemon grass,ginger flavor. My husband enjoyed his Mongolian Beef though. read more

Wow!! Shocking surprise when the owner of Asian 1 came to see me at my place of employment to apologize for the service I received the night before, to which I wrote a review about. I was amazed that an owner would take the time out of his busy schedule to meet me! With that said I must say that says a lot about the level of service he does expect out of his restaurant and I think that really speaks highly of this establishment and washes away the review I wrote previously. Let me first begin by saying the atmosphere is really cool. I eat there fairly frequently and do enjoy it. However, service is hit or miss. When the manager is there the service is attentive and awesome. They hire alot of young kids as servers, and sometimes they are just terrible when other times they are not. The food on average is okay to good. Sometimes at peak evening hours, the food is great. Other times it sees like they take occasional short cuts and use some frozen ingredients. The quality also depends on the dish. I feel like the fact that their menu is so large and everything recombinable makes it burdensome. In the past, I've frequented this establishment with people who could not eat certain things like egg, and asked the noodles and veggies be cooked with out it. Sometimes they complied happily other times had to send my dish back. I like the restaurant overall and do return but consistency is the biggest issue. We were going to see a show Friday night and stopped here for dinner. It was right at 6pm so the dinner rush was underway, It took quite some time for our server to arrive to take our orders. We had the Chicken Lettuce Wraps for an appetizer, and I would highly recommend ordering that, the chicken is very flavorful and the sauce that goes with it is awesome. I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai for my main course, with spice level two. I have dined at this restaurant numerous times and I have to say this was the best Pad Thia I have had at Asian 1, or and any other restaurant. Whoever was cooking took the time to do it right, just the correct amount of sauce, and the presentation was very nice. My husband ordered the Sushi and that was also excellent. We were somewhat let down with our dessert though. We ordered the Tempura Ice Cream to share and the portion was much smaller than we have had in the past at this restaurant. All in all a great dinner and fair service, but I always expect a little slower service when we hit a restaurant during the prime dinner hour. read more

This place should have a line out the door! We are from the Vancouver-Portland area. Lots of great restaurants. This was like the best of them! I had the Pad Thai. Excellent! Wish they were close by. I'd have it frequently. My wife has allergy issues and they could accommodate with the 2 dishes she was interested in. She had a great meal. Definitely our favorite restaurant in Burlington (or anywhere probably....). We eat here at least once a week. The food is amazing and the portions are huge. We always go at 8 p.m because it's happy hour which you get 20% off. The sushi is really good, especially the muay thai roll. I always get either the crab & chicken fried rice or the pad thai. The thai iced tea is amazing. We just love everything about this restaurant, and hopefully it keeps it up because it's about the only one we haven't been disappointed by here in Burlington. I ordered the Pineapple Rice dish because of the prawns in the menu picture. I got a gigantic beautiful pile of mushy rice with 3 small prawns, and some chicken. I spoke to our lovely server Kelly and she advised that is the standard portion of prawns for the price of the dish and that the prawns were of such good quality. The dish cost $15.95 seriously?!?!? She was though, very sweet and graciously took 50% off the cost of my dish. Not sure it I will go back though, the rice was bleh, but looked pretty. read more

I came across Asian 1 coming back to Seattle from Mt. Baker. We were there for a late lunch on a Sunday. I had never heard of this place before, but I was desperately in the mood for noodles. I read some of the reviews and thought I'd give the place a try. Based on some of the reviews I read, I was a little hesitant. It is clear that the management reads yelp and takes the feedback constructively! Some people wrote about being surprised with getting charged a dollar for rice. Our waitress made this very clear and explained why (high quality jasmine rice). Some people complained about slow service. I thought the service was impeccable and everyone from the hostess to the waitress to the bussers were extremely friendly and courteous. The only point I will concede is that the Pad Thai is a bit ketchupy. That is the only point that could have been slightly better, but that is definitely a personal preference. The restaurant was beautifully decorated. It was clean and tasteful. The tables are more bench than booth but in the most comfortable way you can imagine. Food was top notch. We had too many dishes to name, but all featured fresh and copious vegetables and succulent sauces. While we didn't order off the healthy menu, it was great to see some sensible options available. As the sign on the entrance says, it's "healthier than cooking at home" or something to that effect. I love the Asian 1 in Bellingham but this place is really close. My server was knowledgable and attentive. My food was good and consistent with Bellingham as well. My food arrived quickly and my martini was amazing. I loved my sushi and happy hour here happens twice so all the more reason to stop in. Bellingham's Asian 1 has always been my first stop for Asian food, but now I know I can enjoy it when I'm visiting family in Burlington. I have a new home away from home, I'll be back. read more

Had the Phad Thai, it was pretty good. I have some food sensitivities and my nose usually starts to run after eating Thai food, did not happen here, a plus! Sushi was not available until after 4. They do gluten free, a plus. Staff is friendly and helpful. I hate jazz, and they were playing it too loud on the Sunday afternoon we stopped here. I work across the street and this is a great place to grab a quick lunch. I love their sushi! The Asian1 roll is DELICIOUS. As is the Evergreen State roll. Their phad thai is good, not great. I love having the option to have brown or white rice - the brown rice is realllllly good!!! read more
