I have been to many hibachis and this by far is subpar at best. The chef looked like he didn't want to be there and was not friendly. The server was extremely slow and never came back to ask us about refills. He couldn't locate our bill when asked several times. We had to ask for the manager for assistance. I've been coming to Asian Bistro regularly since they opened, and I've noticed some things are starting to slip. I don't think it's just me. It used to be, you had to wait in line to get in. Heck, once I placed a takeout order from the back of the line, and picked it up when I reached the door. That is not the case today. I stopped in during lunch while a mall event was going on. There were tons of people around, but not eating here. There was one other couple in the dining room and that was it. The ambiance hasn't changed. The place still looks good, and is clean. Service is not as good as it was. The hostess at the door isn't terribly gregarious, making me wait while she finished some paperwork related thing she was doing before she seated me. I was served by a tag team of waiter and waitress, who were somewhat friendly. The waiter seemed to be in charge of delivering my food, while the waitress took care of drinks and removing dishes. Their timing was awkward. My appetizer was delivered while I was eating my salad. They almost took away the little dish they give you to pour soy sauce in before I'd even receiving my sushi. The waiter had to stop and squint at the checks he was delivering to the other couple and myself before he put them down. The general impression I got was that they didn't quite have a grip on what they were doing. The food is definitely not as good as it was. The tempura, which used to be one of my favorite dishes from here, was greasy. The sweet potato was undercooked, the taro was unpleasant, and the broccoli was mushy. My sushi was a disappointment as well. The rolls were somewhat smaller in size, and not particularly flavorful. Honestly, Royal Buffet's sushi is better tasting. Overall, if you're in the mall, and want a "nice", relatively healthy sit down dinner, this is your only option, and I wouldn't dissuade you from it. However, if you are coming here for the express purpose of having sushi, you would be MUCH better off driving the extra ten minutes to go to Oriental Cafe. read more

So I went lastnight for my birthday and the server was very rude first off. She had forgotten out beers and when we asked her where they were she gave me a attitude and said they were coming right up after 10-15 mins. Then I order hibachi rice and I asked for nice eggs in it and she said they didn't have eggs which that came out and there was eggs in it. I felt that the atmosphere was very strange like no music. Surprised ourselves by enjoying the meal as much as we did, given the restaurant's location between a shopping mall and a movie theater. The roll sizes are slightly bigger than at most restaurants; and their prices, which usually come with a lunch special on weekdays before 3 pm, are very fair. Very bad food and lack of service. I ordered lettuce wrap that was described as ground chicken etc. and arrived as chunks of chicken swimming in a thick salty sauce along with a Romaine lettuce heart. The very heart, where no leaf is wider than an inch! When I pointed out to the waitress that it was impossible to "wrap" anything, she just shrugged. She very attentively came by often to ask how everything was, but I'd ALREADY told her it was unacceptable. I kept expecting her to bring some lettuce leaves, but finally realized she wasn't going to and I just used the little leaves like chips to scoop out chicken, avoiding as much of the sauce as possible. My husband was happy with his curry, but for nearly $19.00 it was way overpriced. Furthermore, the bathroom was dirty, and there are cobwebs in the lights in the dining room. This place is good not just for sushi, but also for Hibachi. If you know Benihana, it's pretty much the same. The only problem is that you need a party of at least six to sit in the Hibachi area. I'm not sure if they can combine parties, though. read more

This restaurant was the most unprofessional place I have ever been. We received sushi that we tried and did not like. We politely asked to get it taken off to our waitress and a new waitress came over and asked what the problem was. We explained it to her as well and she told us she would send over the manager. Once the manager came over she began to raise her voice when we explained we did not like the sushi. She made it into an argument instead of complying and taking it off the bill. This went on for at least 15 minutes while the rest of the staff gathered around the table as well to watch. She made a very big scene and walked away. Then she came back and told us she "called" her manager. At this point we were very confused because we were told she was the manager and when we asked her if she was she ended up telling us she was not. We asked her if we could speak to the manager and we were told she was not there, so we asked to speak to her on the phone. She put, what I'm assuming, was the actual manager on the phone and we told her all about what happened and then she said she had to speak to the staff again. Finally after all this waiting and arguing for about 45 minutes we finally received the checks and left. This place is absolutely ridiculous and does not understand what it takes to run a restaurant. read more

The food is great but be careful about prices. I went there a few times and once I noticed that I was being charged more than I expected. They changed the price of the hibachi chicken+ filet mignon from 21 something to 27 something and didn't bother to change it on the menu. The manager persisted and tried to get me to pay the extra until I told him that I was paying menu price or calling the cops and having them take care of it. Horrible take out food, I ordered the lunch sushi special with Katsu Chicken appetizer. The sushi was tiny rolls with barely any rice on it, they did not taste fresh at all. I am questionable if the salmon was even real fish. The katsu was a tiny chicken filet that was more fried bread than chicken, and cold when I received it. The only upside this resturuant has is that it is the only sushi place in Willimantic. If your looking for good Sushi or Japanese food, make a trip to Norwich or Manchester, far better places are to be found there. Living is the Northeastern area of CT does not give you a lot of choices of good food, atmosphere, service, and a fun time. Asian Bistro is a hidden gem in the Eastbrook Mall. The hibachi is great and the chefs provide your family and friends with entertainment and great food cooked right in front of you. The bar scene, while small, is energetic and a great place for locals to meet friends and new people. Courtney, Sasha, and Caroline always make you feel special and remember what your favorite drink or meal is. The restaurant is usually quite busy every night but the bartenders are great at muti-tasking, handling the bar and restaurant. The quality of food is excellent as well as the price. If you go regularly be sure to sign up for their VIP card. For every $300 spent you will get a $30 gift card. That's essentially 10% off your meal each time you are there. In spite of some of the negative reviews I have not experienced a bad meal. The food is always fresh. Try the Japaneses seaweed salad and crab rangoons which are our favorite appetizers.
