I ordered a custom box with lemongrass pork $12.39 total -- now I've had plenty of Vietnamese lemongrass pork and never have I seen it look like Chinese barbecue pork... taste was pretty plain too. I don't even think they added the peanut sauce I asked for. This location looked like a chain that some workers just threw together for the Burlingame fusion crowd. I had just finished my gym session in San Bruno and wanted something to eat that would both satisfy my taste buds and wouldn't make me feel like I just wasted a good work out. I have had Asian Box bookmarked for quite some time, and I was more than happy to drive to Burlingame to check it out (only about 3 miles away). Located in the heart of downtown Burlingame, I suppose it might be a bit hard to find parking around the area. However, if you don't mind the extra steps, I usually just park a couple of blocks away and I never have to have an epic show down with another car for a parking spot there. Asian Box's style of ordering is like the thousands of poke shops that have graced the Bay Area: you pick up the menu once you enter the door and mark off whatever you want. UNLIKE most poke shops though, none of the toppings require extra cha-ching (winner winner abalone dinner!). Sides and drinks are extra, of course. Also unlike poke shops (and what is probably the only complaint I have) is that their food isn't on display for the patron. While I was deciding on my toppings, I *really* wish I could see what certain items are. I guess you can ask the workers what "crispy shallots" are (please don't judge me for not knowing. I just googled and I know now!!), but it would be nice to see for myself. When I received my box (~8 minute wait with 2-3 orders ahead of me), I was jumping for joy inside. Alll this food for under $10? Yes please! Taste-wise I thought it was fine - although you can't really go wrong with the veggies, so the chicken is probably the only item I could rate and I personally liked the seasoning. If you compare Asian Box to the dishes at Vietnamese restaurants, I think you might be slightly disappointed because I think there's a little less flavor here (fish sauce at Viet restaurants ftw mmmm). Was going to have a sit-down lunch, but upon entering, the stifling greasy smell in the air prompted me to just get a take-out. Got the chicken Banh Mi sandwich. First of all, it was not cut in half, which made it very difficult to handle. But the worst part is that the bread is absolutely stale. I had Asian Box inside the basement of Macy's Union Square a few years ago and thought they were just "ok." But hubs and I were on B-game Ave a few months ago, and it was hot and lunch time, so we decided to do Asian Box. He's never had it before. Asian Box is compared to an Asian version of Chipotle because you can build your box. However, they do have some combos listed for customers on the menu. And unlike Chipotle, there's no line for you to walk down with an employee to build your box. We both got the soy garlic beef and had similar toppings (pickled veggies, fried scallions, street dust, peanuts, scallion oil), he went with white rice and I went with the chilled noodles. I saw some people's beef was a little pink, so because I was pregnant at the time, i had hubs go back up to them and ask them to make sure that the beef was cooked all the way. They kindly did this. Our boxes were served shortly to us and they didn't skimp on the portions. They definitely gave more here than the SF location. The beef was tender and cooked all the way through, yet still very flavorful. Veggies were fresh, the Asian street dust gave it an aromatic, semi spicy, seasoning and the scallion oil coated the noodles and veggies just enough without being a grease bomb. We were so stuffed, and our boxes were under $10 before tax. Food is quick, fresh, healthy and affordable. I'd definitely come here over Lemonade down the block. They have pretty substantial seating both inside and outside, including large tables for big groups. You can either choose from a selection of pre-made boxes, or make your own. Prices range around $10-12, depending on which protein you choose. You can choose from a selection of bases (rice, noodles, salad), proteins (beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, tofu), toppings, and sauces. We got the chicken with peanut sauce and pork with tamarind sauce. The portion size is fairly large but they do give a ton of carrots and bean sprouts - still, on box is enough for two meals for me. The pork was delicious - grilled and seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of fat. The chicken was not as tasty as the pork and was a touch on the dry side. Everyone there is really nice--from the moment you walk in they greet you, to being very helpful in giving you recommendations of each menu options. The food comes quick too, which is nice. I used to love this place but they are not aware of ingredients and my daughter and I had to toss away our lunch due to food allergies. I specifically ordered our box without any sauces and asked if anything ie the meat was cooked or used fish sauce in any of the preparations. We ordered the ox box with steamed veggies (no sauce) no toppings and no sauces. The meat and egg def had fish sauce. My daughter refused it based on the smell since she is super sensitive and I took a small taste and had to throw it out since the fish sauce taste was so overwhelming. What a waste and the employees need to be educated better as food allergies are pretty serious. We are lucky we didn't have to use our epi pens. Dear Tracy (manager), I was at Asian Box a little before 8pm tonight and ordered the sticky ribs. Girl at counter tells me that there's no more. I look up at the menu board, trying to figure out what to order and see the Ox Box - Double Beef, Jasmine Rice, Sauce Tossed Veggies, All Toppings, Caramel Egg, Sriracha, Asian Street Dust. And a iced coffee sans ice. My number was called and I had to ask for my iced coffee. There was no one inside except for me. I was excited and hungry to try the Ox Box when I got home. But, alas.... Ewwwwww, the beef was soooooo dry and tough - completely inedible that I picked it out and ate everything else. For almost $19 this was a total rip off. And I was so disappointed. I called this location at 8:30 pm and asked for the manager and the girl on the phone told me that you had left for the day. I had heard of Asian Box and their various locations throughout California, both north and south, but had not had a chance to try them until recently. Essentially, Asian Box is sort of of a fancier Asian version of Chipotle in that you can order from some of the chef's pre-set combos or make your own box, which can be customizable down to having your sauce on the side, or taking/leaving certain pickled greens on as toppings. For all its upscale decor/interior vibes, I like that Asian Box makes a point to be mindful of not only the environment (recycled paper togo bento boxes and "corn"-based/biodegradable cutlery all the way!), but also in giving back to the community (they support several charities). Food-wise, I can't say I was overly wowed with my ox box selection, but I can say that if you are craving that specific Asian flavor profile, AB will probably get it fixed well enough. For the price point of ~$12+, I think you are fairly paying for fresh ingredients, ease of customization, and transparency on presence (or not!) of allergens such as gluten (AB operates 100% gluten free...uncommon for Asian cuisines to guarantee because of soy sauce, etc). Interesting that other customers at this location seem to have such spotty experiences with service...during my visit, the few folks in front of me in line as well as myself had pleasant enough experiences and the food came quite quickly. $10 doesn't get you very far these days, not if you live in the SF Bay Area... You can barely get a freakin' salad during lunch for $15. Want protein? Add another $5-$8. My vote is for In-N-Out because most of the world's problems can be solved by a double double animal style. Spoken like a true heffer. I've always heard great things about Asian Box's location in Union Square but it's just too hard to get to during lunchtime. They're on UberEats but by the time you pay for delivery fee + tip, it would be double the cost. I was excited to see that Asian Box was taking over the old Melt location in Burlingame so I could finally pay a visit. Asian Box is like the Vietnamese version of Chipotle except they use sustainable ingredients with no additives, no antibiotics, and no hormones. All their sauces are made from scratch and everything is gluten and msg free. What's even better is you can get a filling meal for under $10! Check off your choice(s) on an order form, hand it to the cashier, and wait for your name to be called. My biggest gripe with the order form are it didn't specify what was in the chef's signature boxes and what's in the sauces so you had to match it up with an actual menu which was inconvenient and inefficient if there's a line. So, I just made my own box. I personally think that is a super trashy thing to do, and would much prefer to just raises prices by 3%. So, I feel like I'm a pretty straightforward person and have given reviews that are higher than usual. This happens to be the case, as this Asian Box should get a zero. I called this AM (10/27) at opening (1100) and asked if I could place a small catering request for pickup at 5pm in the evening. At first, the male that answered the phone said 'no' because there was no manager there. When I asked whether I could speak to a supervisor in the store, he passed the phone over to a female. I asked her if I could place an order for a couple small items for my daughter's birthday party. She said "no, because there is no manager here." I asked "why is there no manager and why do we have to make catering requests through this manager?" The female replied "I don't know, I've only been working here for a week." My first thought was "I am getting nowhere", but my second though was "why did the guy pass the phone over to her if she has only been there for a week and is a supervisor?" Was the initial guy there for only "less than a week?" So I asked the female on the phone whether I could come in and order my items. If not, I would be happy taking my business elsewhere. Basically I was looking for a tray of noodles with a protein, and some shrimp spring rolls. Based on the website menu, this would serve no more than 7-10 people. She said yeah, sure. So I asked her again, "how is this different than asking you over the telephone, now, for the same order?" She replied, "yes, we can do it, what do you want?" So I proceeded to place my order for 1 tray of noodles with beef and 1 tray of spring rolls. The female took the order and my info, and asked what time I needed it by. I replied "by 5pm." She said "we'll see you then." So I showed up at the store, thinking that I can put behind the morning phone call. I figured, I'm going to get my food and my daughter's birthday party will be fun for all of her guests (some have gluten intolerances). I walked in and stated my name to the associate (young female). She asked me, "what did you order?" When I stated my name and order, another young male said, "oh, sorry, but we never made the order." Now, you can't believe how I felt at this point, nothing but rage, really. I asked, "is there a reason why nobody called me to tell me that this order was never made?" The young male looked at me and said, "sorry." I immediately asked for the manager's business card, and that took another 3 minutes of fumbling around and asking each other where the manager's info was. After some time, they were able to produce a card with a manager's name on it. So, I'm sorry for such a long review, but I just wanted to state the facts of this inept system here at Asian Box. I have encountered troubles in the past when trying to place an order for catering, and it took the regional person to contact me to make things right. Strangely enough, my email folder gets constant reminders to cater with Asian Box...I guess I can unsubscribe from all Asian Box communications. I also question the staff in the store. Why are there associates who cannot help? If there are no managers or supervisors around, why would you trust somebody who has only been working there for a week to take the "I need a supervisor" phone call? This visit definitely earns a zero, and a zero chance that Asian Box will get my business again. I will also spread the word to others of their faulty catering system. Basically, an email with your order has to be sent to a manager, and then they will contact you. But if the store employees have such a hard time finding this info...I miss the days of being able to call a restaurant and being able to place an order, large or small, and being able to pick it up at the requested or promised time. My family owned and ran a restaurant for 24 years, and we rarely turned customers away. I did feel like Asian Box didn't want this business, which is fine, because they won't be getting any from. 11/12 Update to 10/27 review I must have received the attention of actual managers and supervisors as I received emails regarding this review. I think that Asian Box is trying to repair what went wrong, which isn't easy because it really put a damper on my daughter's birthday party. I will give kudos to Chuck for trying to right their wrong. I also heard from the store manager and she explained the chain of events leading up to what happened, and they owned up to it. I'm not sure what changes will come about from all of this, but I hope that Asian Box can get it right the next time. The food is terrible. I ordered the pho and the green curry. Imagine that your grandmother from Toledo Ohio attempts to make pho having never tasted it before. This soup was essentially beef broth (sans any of the spices in pho) and thin spaghetti noodles (not rice noodles). It doesn't taste like anything... It doesn't even smell like pho. The green curry is equally as bland. It has no taste whatsoever and no smell. The aromatics of Indian curries are completely absent. We ordered two Garden Boxes from Asian Box this last Sunday, around lunchtime. My husband got light tummy issues, and I got full on food poisoning and had to get medical treatment. I tried Banh mi for the first time here at Asian Box. The homemade bread was interesting. Inside of the bread was soggy with the sauce. Pork was soft, but thick slices for a normal Banh mi. Lack of vegetables and flavor. I don't think they know what is Banh mi and it was not restaurant quality. Go to Cherimoya to get a decent one. Disappointing. read more
