wow. I have wanted to try the banh mi here for a while. I happened to be downtown and headed home I saw plenty of parking so I decided to finally stop. Walked in. 1 person ahead of me. His food came out and he walked over to the register to pay. The woman in sight greeted me. Nice. Then walked over to ring the dude up. I stood at the place to order. Another man walked in and she proceeded to help him, not me. He had multiple lottery tickets and she was calculating the amount to pay out. Annoying. At this point she said to me to "ring the bell." Look down. Bell. Rang it. Single ding. Still no one to help me, initial woman still dealing with payout. I ring the bell again. Twice. No one comes out. First woman finishes up the transaction and I say that I rang the bell. She came around and took my order and left it on the desk, after asking me if I like my banh mi spicy. Yes, and I explained how I got one recently without jalapeno and that fortunately I had some at home where I was eating it. She agreed that the sandwich needed jalapeno. She went to the back and apparently told another woman about my order. Second woman comes out and gets a rubber band and puts it on what looks like a previous order. OK I get it, she's finishing up an order. Then this second woman is wiping down counters and organizing stuff. WTF? I've already been here 7 minutes. Is someone going to make this sandwich? Eventually the second woman looks at the order and opens up a mushy roll and plops it onto the grill. Oh dear. This isn't right. Then she put some meat on the grill - I ordered pork - there wasn't a combo with pate. Soft roll, no pate - 2 bad signs already. She builds the sandwich over the next 5 minutes (yes, I was looking at my watch - was trying to get to HS to give to my son), gets a piece of parchment paper, puts the sandwich in and rolls it, and puts in a Signature Select (Safeway?) bag - ? - and hands it to me with a smile and a thank you. OK so maybe the delay was that she had to turn on the grill? I don't know, but it took FOREVER for me to get out of there. The kicker? Barely any daikon/carrot/cilantro on the sandwich, and NO JALAPEÑO?!?! We just discussed this! Mushy gross roll. The pork was ... interesting. This is a sandwich, defiinitely NOT banh mi, and definitely not worth the total of 14 minutes (12:44-12:58) that I spent in that establishment. Was walking in downtown San Mateo when I came upon this market. I had never heard of it before but saw that they sell Vietnamese sandwiches. My partner and I ordered the tofu and chicken sandwiches. Both had a really nice smokey flavor and I loved that there were a lot more veggies than a typical Bahn Mi... although the chicken was a bit dry and tofu a little wet. Overall, it was very affordable and I thought it was tasty! We also got a Vietnamese coffee which came in a huge size and was really really good (we asked for less sweet, and it was perfect). I have to say for a hole in the wall. Excited to say you not bad at all. Foremost I came in for coffee. Plain and simple. Excellent cup of coffee . Flavorful and coated the tongue. But what happened next was the most enjoyable. The warmth and caring of family. I looked over and they had on a cold display spaghetti with meat sauce. And asked if it was from next door (pasta place) they said No , my mother made it her way. And Karen proceeded to tell me her mom makes excellent spaghetti. So I bought one. This is the gourmet grocery store whereas Whole Foods is more of the healthy grocery store and I shop at both. Unfortunately, I can no longer even get my grain free cookie dough at Central market on South Lamar as they stopped carrying it recently and were the only ones that carried it in this area. They don't care about healthy products or organic so much as they do gourmet and therefore I'm shopping more at Whole Foods having just moved here from out of state. Central market priority is definitely gourmet and healthy comes second! It is unfortunate because we live in a toxic world! Thus the three stars, but I still continue to shop here because they do have better prepared food than Whole Foods even though it may not be quite as healthy! I particularly like their cooked chicken breast. I walked by this place almost everyday (at least pre-covid times) and finally I was so hungry enough that I couldn't all the way to the heart of downtown San Mateo. So I popped in and sat down. While I will admit that I've had better Vietnamese food (I had the vermicelli noodles with pork and imperial rolls) I will have to say that I LOVE the vibe of this place. The shop owners knew every single person who walked in. So generally, this would make me feel like an outsider but they were so quick to make me feel like a part of the family. I would say that a 3-star rating is not a bad rating for me. In fact, I will come back to this place just because I feel like I'm being fed by a couple of Vietnamese moms who want to make sure that I'm full before stepping out of their shop/restaurant. What the deuce? While randomly walking around the neighborhood we saw this liquor store/market and noticed that it had a sign that said Vietnamese and American food on the front. Because we were thirsty we figured we'd pick up some waters before heading over to Central Park. As far as I could tell it was just another liquor store until I saw the menu that had a bunch of Vietnamese entrees, burgers, and sandwiches. What a peculiar establishment. I didn't try any of the food since I had lunch not too long ago but I did take a menu with me. The place is run by a Vietnamese lady, her mother, and her young daughter. My new favorite spot for a bite to eat after being at the park. It's half a corner store with a little restaurant attached, so good for a casual place to eat! They don't have a lot of the menu, but the food is really good and a little non-traditional. The egg-rolls were big and stuffed with lots of meat. They remind me a little of my mom's lumpia that she makes. The Vietnamese sandwiches are also big and full of meat. The chicken was tender and flavorful. The bread was toasted (my favorite) and really soft on the outside, not tough at all. They use mayo on the sandwiches which I love. Everything was made to order, cooked just a couple feet away. I needed to return to the city San Mateo to do some quick work-related errands. After my brief work has been completed, I've decided to stay in the Downtown San Mateo Area to grab a quick bite before I leave the city. With the nice warm weekend, it's no surprise that the downtown area was crowded and busy. So I had to settle at the tail-end of the downtown area to have my lunch at this tiny Vietnamese Restaurant/Grocery Store. As you walk in to this place, on the right are the kitchen and the dining area where you can order your food and watch your food being prepared like a restaurant. And the remaining part is the actual grocery-store. You can purchase your meal and/or grocery needs at any of the adjoining stations. It's pretty much like a self-serve beverage or snack canteen. From the dining-area, I ordered the Chicken Noodle plate (#21). The $8.00 noodle plate is cooked Vietnamese-style and had steamed chicken, vegetables in a thick noodle-pasta. A very unique taste with a generous portion makes my noodle plate one of a kind. They also serve there own Vietnamese-style Iced-Coffee for $2.00 and that drink was "strong" as heck! While I was chomping down on my meal, one of the ladies in the kitchen got the fryer going and just made some fresh Vietnamese-style egg roll. I bought two of them for $1.25 with my meal. The filling in those egg-rolls was very fresh and tasted yummy, considering that my tongue was severely burning. I paid my $15.00 meal in cash, but I'm not too sure if they accept credit cards. The three ladies (one in the kitchen, the waitress and the grocery side) assumingly they are tri-owners are very friendly and ultra nice. The sweet lady that took my order suggested to me to try the Beef Noodle soup and their authentic Vietnamese sandwich. $5.49 for an Americanized Banh Mi Sandwich. It's not an authentic banh mi. No gloves used by the old woman behind the counter prepping your sandwich. The meat is pre-cooked. They bring it out from the fridge and heat it up for you. They add tomato and lettuce to your so called "banh mi". No pate either. The sandwich itself tasted "ok" but it's not a true "banh mi". Shhhhhh, don't tell anyone about this hidden gem. It's a "Ma and Pa" shop, so be respectful because it's family run. It may seem like an unusual set-up attached to a convenience store, but Central Market has some of the freshest and creative Vietnamese cuisine I've seen outside of Vietnam. Their pho is pho-king AMAZING and salads have knocked my socks off. I've yet to try a sandwich, but they sure do look delicious. I've only been to this place 2 times, but both times have been pleasant experiences. The first time I went (June 2015) was with a friend. We were looking for a place to get some brunch and so we decided to go in here. We decided to buy 2 of their banh mi (sorry if the spelling is off) sandwiches. The nice lady behind the counter wrapped them up for us and placed them in a plastic bag. The sandwiches were reasonably priced. According to my friend (he knows Vietnamese food much better than I do, by the way), they use more veggies than on a usual banh mi and their sauce is a bit different. Nonetheless, I found their sandwiches refreshing, tasty, and filling. A few months later, I went there again with my friend (same guy) and we decided to sit down and order something from the menu. The ladies behind the counter remembered us and were just as friendly as last time. We ordered one beef and one chicken pho. We were the only ones in there so it didn't take very long for our orders to arrive on our table. Again, I don't know much about Vietnamese food, but I found their pho delicious. It was a big bowl of warm soup, noodles, meat, cilantro, and some bean sprouts. I got to try both the chicken and beef pho and I'd say they were both pretty tasty. I waited for about 5 minutes while the woman cooked the meat on the grill and prepared my sandwiches. Now the taste of it, it was not for me. It tasted charred, not sure if it was the bread or the meat. Too much meat, and the meat was thick, like cut up pieces of pork chop, and it was healthy and lean, so it was a little dry. The bread was chewy and not crunchy and tasted a bit like sour dough. The pickled veggies might have helped with the dryness and balance out the sandwich but there were not enough veggies, and I couldn't really taste the pickled taste, plus the sandwich didn't have enough sauce. Located in a bodega, convenience mart, this is a very earnest and neighborhoody place to eat pho. Half the things on the menu are unavailable - summer rolls, appetizers. We ordered the basic pho with rare beef. The bowl was huge and topped with a lot of greenery (chopped basil, spinach, celery-i think). It looked promising. However, the "rare beef" looked like deli roast beef, complete with the charred edges. It tasted like sandwich roast beef. And the broth tasted like canned chicken stock. There was not the usual thai basil + bean sprouts on the side either. This pho was something I would make in the kitchen in college with leftover sandwich meat and a can of chicken stock. This review is solely with regards to their Pho Tai, Bo Vien. The shop is run by a pair of sisters I think. They're welcoming and very friendly. They have a regular local customer base, which is nice to see. The pho was lacking in the intensity of beef flavor. I noticed a yellow cube floating on the edge of the bowl. My friend who has a more discerning palate said it was butternut squash - a very clever, ingenious way of emulating the pho flavor without the traditional ingredients. Yelpers, please get clear on a 'real' banh mi! "Solid banh mi sandwich," say what?! I was craving my buddy Minh's 'real' banh mi at his place in Burlingame, called Cherimoya Vietnamese Cafe. He escaped from Hanoi to Hong Kong in the mid 1980s and we became friends when he opened Loi's on Irving back in 1989 (it belongs to his sister now). Anyway, I've been eating banh mis since I was four years old and living in Saigon as the son of an expat international trade businessman. So, when the craving hits, it must be answered. When I walked in I checked out the list, and noticed there wasn't a "special", in Vietnamese. This is the one you see written as "Banh Mi Dac Biet". No problem, I'll just ask. That's when I got into a trip down memory lane with the owner about the NVA taking over all the goodies left by the South Viets as they escaped, the beautiful town on the Mekong her family comes from, but as we both agreed, we've had full lives since Vietnam...Something I made clear in my 2004 international bestseller, called THE BAMBOO CHEST (in a 2nd Edition on Kindle since April). Then she confessed that they don't put pate in their sandwiches at CM&C, "but, everything's really fresh." "What?!" I said. No wonder Trang C. didn't enjoy the delish taste of a pate that puts the French to shame (did you know that the best chefs in pre-1945 France were almost always Viet? That's how Ho Chi Minh was introduced to communism through the French Communist Party back in the 1920s, during his cooking school years in Paris). She then asked, "You mean you want a VN sandwich like at Lee's Sandwiches?" Well, uh, yeah, and no. Lee's is not bad, but I wanted great, as mentioned in the stars offered by previous Yelpers. In San Francisco, there's Saigon Sandwiches by the federal building, and they do 'great' and 'real' VN sandwiches. They also don't advertise the 'special Vietnamese sandwich'. But, if you ask for it, they'll make one up for you. It has everything: the thin slices of cold meats such as VN bologna and headcheese, along with the pickled daikon, sweet mayo, chilis, cilantro....and drum roll: pate! Shoot, if an interrogator from Hanoi's Internal Affairs can put together a true Vietnam sandwich for his two comrades and their prisoners, an 18-year-old American photojournalist and and a British TV/film actor-turned treasure hunter, on the road to Saigon from Rach Gia Provincial Prison in 1983, then anyone can put one together: but not if you don't have any perfectly spiced Vietnamese pate... Then the conversation with the CM&C owner turned to the one that always sends shivers up my back: the one where "we just like to make sure our customer's tastes are met"...that's the one! The one that says, Anthony Bourdain has done nothing to actually get "white breads" out of suburbia and into the global culinary scene, but lets them think they have, by secretly omitting the very ingredients that make a region's culinary treasures, well...treasures! Yes, the place is clean (which is the reason I placed 3-stars, instead of 2 for getting me all excited, and wasting my driving time, about a good VN sandwich shop on the Peninsula). If I'm in the mood for a good American sandwich with slices of pork I'm sure I'll return to check them out. Other times I've been in here oldsters have been chowing down on what looked like bad chinese food so I was apprehensive about eating here. Sandwiches are almost $5, which is kind of pricey for banh mi, but the sandwich meat is freshly grilled. Sandwiches take about 10 minutes to get delivered to your table. 1) Bread - weird. Not the usual airy french rolls, more like a squashed and grilled panini bread. 2) Meat - freshly grilled and savory. Fat on the pork was grilled to a crunchy bacon-like texture, yum. 3) Veggies - wide thin strips of daikon and carrot added texture. Needs more jalapeno slices though. 4) Flavor - a bit too much mayo and no pate that I could detect. A little weak on the fish sauce too. Rooster chili sauce is freely available for spicing up the sandwich. Overall though the sandwiches are much better than Saigon City down the street, which also uses weird bread. Went here to try the banh mi and was very disappointed. I'm vietnamese and definately recognize that the food here has a chinese spin to it. Anyways, the banh mi was not authentic for 3 reasons. The bread was not a crusty french bread, but instead a soft sub type bread. Second, there was no taste of liver pate in the sandwich. And thirdly, the pickled veggies where cut thick instead of julienne and the brine of the juice made the whole sandwich soggy. Then I found this place, next to the tire store that I frequent, and tried a just-made-for-you fresh and hot Vietnamese pork sandwich that was out of this world! The placee looks like a small liquor store except there is a tiny restaurant on the side where they make breakfast and sandwiches. I've only tried the banh mi but it's enough to make me drive from boring Foster City (cuisine-wise) to get these amazing flavorful sandwiches. read more
