From plenty of parking, to quick service, and most importantly delicious food - Pho 99 is definitely one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in the city. I came here a while ago for takeout and somehow got a piece of VERY raw chicken. The restaurant was closed by the time I realized but I called the next day to let them know. They offered to give me a refund with a receipt if I came in person or to get a new meal sometime. I got busy and forgot about it but they reached out to me twice insisting to make things right. I ended up ordering a spicy chicken pho for takeout and it was amazing. The flavor was great and the staff was very nice about everything. TERRIBLE REVIEWS, GREAT RESTAURANT!!! We do not deserve this place. I have seen such stupid 1 star reviews driving this place down so I made this. People claiming the food was undercooked when the menu item they ordered as takeout comes raw with hot broth. Whoever made that deserves to eat McDonald's and crappy, frozen, store-bought crab rangoons. People complaining of service when arriving unannounced with a party of 12 when the restaurant is on off season hours. I love this restaurant. It has great pho that doesn't have the standard dishwater taste of many small Asian places around GR. The restaurant is often understaffed because it's a small family restaurant. They do a great job but it's usually one person acting as waiter and host. We have called with parties of over 10 and been turned away but never had the gaul to arrive with one. Had some bad experiences with service years ago but recently it's been very good. Kong the host is fast and good at steering people to good menu options. A Vietnamese friend of ours brought us here to try the crispy noodles and their pho. The seating was comfortable in booths and she ordered for us in Vietnamese - The good thing is that there is photos in the menu so that's how I remembered what dish we ate. The service was a little slow, but the food was delicious. They don't have gluten free options for their fried noodles (You can get rice noodles but the sauce still has some gluten) but it was worth it. Also portions are huge, great for sharing. Pho was good not as good as others I've tried. The next time we did order to go and when I called I gave them a name for the takeout like you normally would when placing a to go order. But when my family went to pick it up they said they don't keep track of the names and just by what you order. So make sure your pick up person knows what they're picking up. Asian Palace is one of Grand Rapids' best kept secrets. It's a small, hole-in-the-wall restaurant that doesn't look like much from the outside, but looks are certainly deceiving. We have been going here pretty regularly for about 7 years, and never had a bad experience. The service is always quick, the food is amazing. We have tried pho at almost every pho restaurant in a 30 mile radius, and no other even compares. The staff always recognizes us and greets us as soon as we walk in. It's my go-to Vietnamese restaurant whenever I'm back home, and I'll continue to come here and take friends here. The food is authentic, it's delicious, and parents approved (they have a better opinion on Vietnamese food than I do). The wait.. I understand, definitely slower and newer servers, but hang in there. It's a bit slow each time, but being nice to the waiters, they will come through for you a bit more. I would definitely recommend if you're searching for authentic Vietnamese food. If you're looking for good pho, rice plates and vermicelli dishes, this is the restaurant for you. The taste, portions and prices are great. However, don't expect good service. Some of the staff are better than others but it's something Asian Palace needs to work on. You also have to be okay with waiting for a while for your food. Since we moved from Seattle to rural NW Michigan, we have missed having great Pho. We have tasted many mundane bowls, and really didn't hold out much hope as we walked in. It was mid afternoon and we were the only patrons. The place is very clean, and our server was very fast and attentive. We ordered: my son got #4 and I got #7. It arrived quickly, and the smell was amazing! Pho is all about the broth/soup, and this tasted amazing!!! My son remarked that it was perfect, and the best he has ever had. I agree! The amount of meat in each bowl was very generous, and great quality. My son loved it so much he asked if he could use his straw to finish his broth - I let him just this once. He told the staff that it was the best lunch he has ever had. Pretty good praise from a teenager. This will now be a regular spot for us when we visit Grand Rapids. read more

After a week of being under the weather and paying bills, we wanted something low key and inexpensive for Valentine's day. I thought a nice big bowl of pho would do the trick, and I was right! We ordered the crab ragoons to start, which were disappointing - the flavor of the filling was bland and they were a little cold on the inside. We also ordered 3 pork egg rolls which were very tasty and crispy. Loved the dipping sauce that came with! For dinner we split the #1, the vegetarian Pho. *Note I've checked the menus at the other popular Pho places and this was the only one with a vegetarian option. The bowl was packed with noodles and veggies - carrots that were cooked perfectly but still had texture, broccoli, mushrooms (picked those out) onion, cilantro, lettuce, and a side of sprouts/basil/jalepeños. It was also served with tofu that had an interesting texture, more spongy than I am used to. The broth wasn't as flavorful as I was hoping, probably the lack of beef. the portion was huge! definitely big enough to share! I read other reviews about the service being poor, so I wasn't expecting much. We were seated and drinks came out promptly, our order was taken quickly (maybe too much so) and food came out fast. However nobody stopped by after the food was dropped off. We had to go into the front to ask for a box and our bill, and knew to pay at the counter. The restaurant began to fill up, and everyone was very kind so I was not put off by the service. Something worth noting was the prices were different than they were on the online menu - 8.95 I believe and it was listed at 6.95 online for the Pho. Still a good price. Soft drinks were only 1$ but no refills allowed. Had never seen that before. Our bill totaled $18 which was very reasonable for all the food and we have tons left over. Overall it was not disappointing but I don't feel the need to go back. read more

Really surprised by the crummy reviews, because I've ordered delivery from here twice and eaten in once, and it was really delicious! I got thick noodles with beef and lots of fresh veggies in a brown sauce for delivery both times, and it was delicious. Tonight I came in with my 3 friends and there was no wait. The place was clean and tidy. Our waiter was really attentive and came right over- we ordered some fresh spring rolls while we decided on entrees. The fresh rolls were a bountiful portion and were wrapped up with fresh shrimp and really nice fresh herbs. The herbs and bean sprouts with lime they served with the pho were the freshest looking I've ever seen. I had crispy noodles with beef, pork, shrimp and chicken and it was delicious! It also had really nicely cooked fresh veggies. My wife had chicken pho, and it was delicious. One friend ordered an interesting dish; cool noodles and seasoned pork served with a couple egg rolls- I tried this and I really liked it. Another friend did a beef pho and enjoyed that as well. I've been here twice and the food is good! When we were last there on Thursday for lunch, the service was really poor. We had to literally go up to the hostess area to order food since no one came to us, never received silverware, when we asked for silverware we received a knife and spoon without a fork so we had to ask again. The waitress never came to drop off our check and I had to remind her to picking up. The waitress was very new and nervous so we will see how it goes next time. I use to like this place so much when it was on the other side of 28th. I just don't get it. You move to a bigger space, you adjust for it. More servers = better service? Not just that, no matter how many times I've been there, there seems to be no heating or cooling going on in the place. Just feels so "cold" when you walk in. Food wise? Decent. But definitely not worth the near $10 a bowl. Many other places to go in town. I still wonder how a few years back the food critic from the Marriot chose this place as the best restaurant in town. Asian Palace is a popular place for pho, but I was really impressed by one of the non-Pho noodle dishes my boyfriend ordered the last time we were there. The pho comes in huge bowls; I always have leftovers. The rare beef is my favorite; I have had others with meatballs and they weren't really my thing. Asian Palace/Pho 99 is decent for pho. Not the greatest pho chay/pho rau cai (vegetarian pho) I've ever had (Pho Soc Trang being my favorite so far). So, the vegetarian pho here doesn't have tofu and there wasn't a lot of noodles either this last time around. It was still very good and flavorful and I like that it had broccoli and cilantro in it. Overall, it was fine and filling, just could use some tofu and more noodles i think. The restaurant itself is a little bit nicer/cleaner than the other pho shops. It's in the Little Saigon plaza, where there's an Aikido studio and an Asian speciality grocery store that I really enjoy. This restaurant's a bit hard to find though, as it's tucked away in the corner. I obviously cant speak for the meaty pho, but my carnivore brother likes it almost as well as Pho Anh Trang. Overall, this place has decent and inexpensive pho, fast service and a nice spot to sit and enjoy your hot soup. It's a divine experience, especially in the cold Michigan winter months. Food: 5 stars, every time. Service: about 2 stars most of the time, but tonight they are sooo far from even one star. Two of us sat for about 5 minutes with zero acknowledgement. There were only 4 or 5 other tables, so it wasn't busy. There were no less than 4 staff behind the counter, all either chatting or checking their phones. When I finally went to the counter to ask for service, one of the young men said "Oh, I didn't even see you sitting there". BS - he had looked me directly in the eye several times while we sat waiting to be acknowledged, and had walked past our table twice. Once we placed our order, it took about 15 mins for the eggrolls to arrive, then another 15 or so for our pho to come out. During our meal, both of us ran out of water. After walking past us twice, we asked for more water...which took another 10 minutes. The whole time we were there, there was a teenage girl behind the counter doing *nothing* but checking her phone and at least 2 other teenage boys talking while a 3rd young man popped in and out of the kitchen. There were about 5 or 6 tables eating, but most of the other tables had not been bussed from previous customers...while all these kids did nothing. I've been here several times because I love the food, and I've let the marginal service pass. This time, the service was simply too bad to overlook. I'll be slurping my noodles elsewhere from now on.
