I'm annoyed at my Chinese restaurant right now and my Co-worker swears by this place so I decided to try it out. Carryout takes a little longer here due to the chef is a perfectionist. If it isn't perfect it'll be scrapped and started over. So make sure you plan for 35 minutes for your food. I ordered General Tso chicken and some Crab Ragoons. The General Tso was very good. A little spicier than my normal place but very very good. The crab ragoons were also very good. My only complaint was not enough sweet and Sour sauce with it. Overall I'd give 5 stars. Would I return? Yes, very soon. Well this revoew changed fast. I ordered the General Tso and an eggroll. About half of the chicken was super tough. The good half tasted very good though. My eternal quest for quality Pho Ga led me to Golden 28 one evening for dinner. I was thrilled when I saw all of the 4 and 5 star reviews on Yelp. Alas, my experience and their Pho Ga leave much to be desired. As far as I could tell, their Pho Ga is served with a beef broth - not a chicken broth. And as far as broth goes - it just was not that flavorful. The chicken was tender and the noodles were not clumped, and the veggies/aromatics were fresh. I did have to request sliced Jalapeños as they did not provide any on the dish. So they did bring some out - although they were some of the mildest I've had in a long time - not much heat. I ended up applying a lot Sriracha sauce to individual bites and to the broth to give it some real flavor. They have a wide range of other menu items. Service was very good. read more

Been too long since I've been back here. Use to frequent this spot all the time for Pho. Came back randomly the other day and I'm gonna be honest when I say you can't get a better bowl of pho in GR. And if you know a place please let me know. Broth is clear and aromatic. First sip and it's nostalgic. You know it's gonna be a good bowl. Nothing else is needed to be added u to the bowl. All tofu and vegetarian dishes are served in beef or chicken sauce. That means there are no vegetarian options. The restaurant was generally dirty as were our dishes. A warning here, don't go by the Website prices. I realize that food costs have risen, and restaurants have struggled to stay open; however, I believe in complete transparency with pricing. We ordered off this restaurant's Website and thought the prices listed would be what we would pay. Our order cost about $30.00 more than the prices listed. I called to ask why and the owner/manager said the website prices are about 20 years old. They haven't had time to update. Food was marginal, and I received one scallop in my soup. Golden 28 popped up first on Yelp and the reviews were helpful in making a sound decision to come here for lunch. My boyfriend had a vermicelli dish with pork chop, shrimp, and an egg roll. I had a rice plate with pork chop, an egg, and shredded pork (#140). I was thrilled when the server asked me if I wanted plain white rice or broken rice. Broken rice? For real? That's an option IN Michigan? In addition, we also ordered a bowl of pho to share (#9) and it was also very good. I can't express how happy the food made me. I finally found an Asian restaurant that knows how to make delicious food. I had an egg roll and pho. It was served very hot and was so delicious. They have many different variations, but I always get the #7 (the rare stake pho). Portions are huge, and at a mere $5.95... you can't beat a lunch or dinner at that price! Now, I'm a Sou. Cal local stuck in what is mostly a mono-cultured Grand Rapids. (I mean the best "restaurants" happens to be mostly bars in this town) And, yes being a Sou Cal local I've probably tried more Pho Ga than I can count, and Golden 28 comes to par with all these other places. Is it the best Pho I've ever had, no. Is it one of the only few Pho places in the West Michigan area that does it decently? Yes. It's probably why I'll be going back. As well, it helps me when the restaurant has that air of authenticity to it, they give chop sticks to their customers (instead of forks and knifes first), and on Sundays there are entire Vietnamese families lined up outside the restaurant waiting to get in. read more

Lets start off by saying I never like to leave a bad review. I genuinely appreciate the blood, sweat and tears that go into opening and running your own business, and the thought of breaking down anyones spirit saddens me. That be said, there would be no sense in having a Yelp account if I would not state my honest opinion. My point is, I know Vietnamese food pretty well and I know what to expect. This restaurant appears clean, with several tables and booths and a brown colorscheme on the walls it slightly reminds me of a *nice* diner/family-coney restaurant. Which is not bad, but it certainly doesnt scream Vietnamese. We ordered the fresh springrolls, which I thought were pretty decent..however, my husband had to stop eating after a few bites as he stated it smelled funky. I believe the term he used was `rotten crotch`. Onto the entrees, I ordered rice with a porkchop, egg and shredded pork. DH went for a dish described as chicken with lemongrass and a spicy sauce with peanuts over noodles. Unfortuntely the chicken was very dry, there was absolutely no lemongrass to be detected and the sauce was..lacking. Combine these factors and he was left with bland, rubbery chicken over dry noodles. He kept asking me where the peanuts were so i pulled out my utensils to dig a few up from the bottom of his bowl. These couple of peanuts were the highlight of his dinner. For real. My dinner was just that, rice with shredded pork, a fried egg and a pork chop. The menu is nearly overwhelming. Golden 28 specializes in Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese food. There are many pages but everything is clearly explained. My mouth is watering. It takes more than a few minutes before we see our waitress again; she is busily working other lunchtime tables. Finally, she delivers water and takes our order. Unwisely, we opt to start with the Appetizer Tray for Two, hoping it will be a panacea to our grumbling stomachs. A platter arrives with fried wonton, fried crab rangoon, fried egg rolls, and fried Vietnamese egg rolls. Do you get the picture? It is our own fault for not examining the individual appetizers more closely. I wanted those light spring rolls wrapped in rice paper, not a deep fried smorgasbord! Still, each of the items is quite tasty, and when dipped into the bowl of sweet-n-sour plum sauce, even more so. I even enjoy the crab rangoon, from which I typically shy away. For our main dishes, we each choose a different variety of Pho (there are over 20 different varieties on the menu). Ever since seeing Anthony Bourdain wax poetic about this dish on No Reservations, I've been dying to try it. Juliet goes with the Dac Biet and Bo Vien, which is steak, brisket, tendon, trip and beef ball. The beef ball isn't what you think; it's a kind of meat sausage formed by hand into little balls. I decide to try the Beef and Chicken (which I think is Dac Biet and Dac Ga, if I remember correctly). Each comes in a very large bowl, thin slices of meat swimming in a fatty, savory broth, steeped in hand-cut rice noodles. Another plate sits between us with fresh Thai basil (still on the stems), lime wedges, bean sprouts, and tiny whole green chilies. I quickly dress up my Pho, mixing everything and preparing to take a bite when... Oh no! The waitress mixed our two dishes! No worries; we quickly swap. I bravely wield the chopsticks (not my strong suit), snagging bits of chicken and beef, along with long strands of dripping, spattering noodles. My first couple tastes are underwhelming. It just tastes like soup, really, with some thin, dry cuts of meat. This is what Tony loves so much? I feel disappointment encroaching. Good things come to those who wait. I think I read that somewhere. As I forge ahead, it becomes clear the Pho is only just started to come alive. The broth becomes more tantalizing; the fresh chili and Sriracha elevate the heat; the meat is rendered tender, and the thin, bumpy slices of tripe (cut thin to mimic the noodles) lose their disconcerting crunch. Though I had gone haltingly into that bowl of Pho, now my chopsticks clicked like chef's blades sharpening. I bring the ladle-spoon utensil to bear now, scooping up great steaming puddles of the broth, drinking it down. Wow. Just wow. I finish my iced Vietnamese coffee and gaze forlornly at the remainder of the unfinished Pho. My belly is full. I am content. So while the appetizer tray was definitely a mistake, the Pho is worth waiting for. Fresh ingredients and authentic preparation more than make up for slightly slow service and typical Asian restaurant decor. I will be enjoying Pho for lunch more often. Golden 28 has been stepping up their game! I used to dine at this spot regularly back then but I was noticing the pho broth becoming saltier each time I went and thus not returning until recently. My friend recommended Golden 28 when I was looking for a pho place to eat since I wanted to try something new. Before coming here, I used to go to Pho Anh Trang until my parents noticed that their broth was tasting different. Unfortunately I had to put a star. It doesn't deserve one. This is the absolute worst food I've ever eaten. I took 1 bite of the chicken and broccoli, one bite of the beef and vegetables, one bite of the chicken fried rice, ate 1 crab Rangoon and threw all 30$ worth of this junk in the trash. We came in as a group of 5 ( all of us are Vietnamese mind you ) and I would say that we were treated like we weren't even there. So service was already bad for us, but to make matters worse we came in an hour before they're closing time and they have stopped making anything with rice in it. So for any dish that came with rice they replaced it with noodles. Talk about disappointing... The waitress was a friend of mine so we planned on tipping her well. Only to find that the owner charged us extra for the noodles that was substituted for the rice. Food was mediocre at best. Service was almost nowhere to be found.
