The place seems to hold a little nostalgia and it's warm and welcoming. Great food and service, both eat-in and take-out.

Red bowl was so close by and I placed an online order about an hour before hand. Their sushi rolls are delicious and totally reasonable. I will say, I am Not a fan of their boba. Too artificial tasting and the tapioca pearls are chewy. Causal restaurant with some business over the weekend with a few customers dining in.

The server was totally out of touch with the menu and how to put an order into the kitchen. I ordered an item and asked for it "extra spicy." She kept asking me if I want a number 13 and if I want some kind of pepper. I had a difficult time understanding her. I order this each time I dine here and never have had a problem. I finally was exhausted dealing with her and went over and explained to the manager what I wished. I thought he figured it out, but when I received my food, learned differently. The food was not the least bit spicy. The rice was stuck together in clumps, as if it had been in a bowl for some time. The temperature if the food was not a hot as usual. They had "love song radio" playing, like this is a romantic place. I will consider other options next time I desire Asian food. Sorry, Redbowl, you really let me down.

I had the miso soup, Maryland and Yum-yum rolls. All tasted great, fresh, and just the right portion for lunch. I liked the addition of panko breadcrumbs for crunch, but I wish the imitation crab meat had been shredded more finely for better texture. For my entree, I ordered the Spicy Basil Crispy Duck (added $1 for Thai spicy). They definitely delivered on the spicy level, but the duck itself was not crispy. It came with rice and bell peppers and basil. The sushi tasted fresh, which was good. Service could use some improvement. We had to ask for small bowls for soy sauce, and when we requested a dessert menu to celebrate the birthday, we were told the kitchen had already closed. It would have been nice if our server had given us a heads up before the kitchen closed. The ambiance is cozy. It almost feels like dining in someone's house. They had Halloween decorations up and murals of historic Frederick painted on the walls. They also have a private parking lot, which made it convenient. Overall, food was good, but a little more attentiveness from the staff would've made the experience even better.

SU ordered Kung Pao Shrimp, her "go-to" and every Asian restaurant, and compares each one to China Garden's version. Her verdict: Modern Asia's was "OK", and she told me I could eat the leftovers for my lunch. I did. My verdict was the same: OK, but nothing to write home to Mother about. (My comparison, BTW, is to a restaurant we enjoyed in Ithaca New York that made Kung Pao with peppers that would flay your face from the inside if you dared to eat one. Modern Asia's didn't even tickle, making it a let down). I ordered Seafood Combination Chinese Yellow Curry, a new dish for me. It was yummy. Described as one-pepper spicy on the menu, it had less heat than the Kung Pao, but the curry sauce had layers of flavor. It featured shrimp, scallops, and calmari plus a wonderful mix of peppers, onions, and other veg. All were nicely (crisply) cooked, even taking into account the Door Dash delivery time. I really enjoyed it. Next time I may ask for a bit more heat, but as it is, I hoovered up every morsel. Try it - you'll like it!
