New pipe installed instead of rusted iron one
    Maria V.

Around X-mas time, my old hydronic heating system finally died, exactly when the temperatures dropped to below freezing. I approached 7 companies, asked for and received 4 proposals. Aspen Hill was the second lowest but the best detailed proposal and time schedule to replace my hot water boiler and the heater for hydronic heating system. Aspen provided free estimates, emailed the proposal the next day, promptly responded to my questions and stood by their word to have new equipment installed by mid-January at the latest. As we were two days before the scheduled installation, another disaster struck: the old iron pipe ( soil stack) that goes through my entire old historic townhouse cracked and there were leakages on each floor. Aspen sent their plumber the next morning and then started working on the pipe replacement and the boiler/heating installation simultaneously. The team of 3 that worked in my house was led by Richard, all of them were fantastic: young, professional, knowledgeable, polite, absolutely wonderful and very respectful to my house and my family. They did their best to minimize the cuttings into the walls and the ceilings, especially in the tiled areas. In my view ( and I've managed several construction and reno projects), they did an outstanding job. The final price was not cheap ( due to a large scope of work) but very reasonable for the type of work and number of staff who were involved. There was a minor hick up after the installation of the heating system, I reached out to Aspen and they promptly scheduled for Richard's team to come back to fine tune the thermostats set up. I am very very pleased with the result. My home is warm and dry again. I am also pleased to finally find a professional, reliable and reasonably priced plumbing company. (I found Aspen Hill through recommendations of several of my Capitol Hill neighbors who had similarly positive experience with this company). Strongly recommend

Aspen Hill installed a new toilet and sink for me, and did a great job. It may seem like a relatively simple job, but I had selected fixtures and plumbing that required rerouting supply lines into very precise locations for aesthetic reasons. They were also extremely accommodating to me, as I kept rescheduling them. They quoted a very fair price and stuck to it. Would definitely hire again.

Before and after: old setup on the left (horrible WH placement making closet unusable for storage) and new on the right

VERY impressed with these guys. I had a tricky water heater situation (required two crews to dismantle and involved building a custom platform and moving plumbing to allow me to actually have a useful closet next to the new heater), and Dave and his team did an absolutely amazing job. In fact they were the only company who was willing to help me figure out a solution to the puzzle and their quote was extremely reasonable given how much extra planning and work was involved. And James the office manager was really great to work with - when was the last time you had a good time scheduling anything home-related over email?? These guys are going to be my go-to for all things plumbing from now on.

    Richard's manifold.

At the initial visit, the technician/owner diagnosed the tank as rusted and leaking from the bottom and said it needed to be replaced. Champion quoted me $3,250 for the replacement and scheduled it for Tuesday. At the emergency visit, the gas to the heater was shut off, but the water supply to the leaking tank was not isolated. The heater kept dripping and wetting the carpet outside the closet. I called the owner, Gus, because I was trying to understand why the water had not also been shut off and how my tenants were supposed to safely use the plumbing while waiting for the replacement. My tone during that call was information collecting, not accusatory. I was trying to understand what had been done, why the tank was still leaking, and how to minimize additional damage. Gus became defensive and told me, "I never told you I turned the water off." I was not blaming him. I was asking a pretty basic question about an active leak. It was Labor Day weekend and during that call it sounded like he was at some type of social event and did not really want to be bothered. I understand it was a holiday weekend, but I had paid $200 for an emergency visit and was dealing with an active leak at a rental property less than 24 hr after the visit. At the end of the call he abruptly hung up, and right before it disconnected I heard him say, "fucking people." The replacement was still scheduled for Tuesday. He knew I had three tenants in the property and that they effectively could not use the water at all because running water was making the leak worse. Tuesday came and the scheduled arrival time passed with no one showing up and no communication. I reached out asking for an ETA. Only then was I told they were fully booked and had to "pass on the opportunity." No rescheduled time was offered. When I later followed up with Gus through Yelp asking why they no showed and why he could not even give me another appointment time, his response was, "that's on you my man I don't deal with rude people." I completely disagree with that characterization. My tone had been focused on gathering information about the leak and how to manage it safely, not accusing him or his company of anything. If he decided after our phone call that he did not want the job, that is fine, but the professional thing to do would have been to tell me before the scheduled appointment. Instead, they just did not show up and I had to reach out after the appointment time had already passed. To their credit, they did refund the $200 emergency service fee. I had to find another company to do the replacement. Unfortunately they could not do it until Friday, so my three tenants were left without usable water for several more days. That company also only charged about $2,600 for the replacement compared with Champion's $3,250 quote. After all of this I went back and read the negative reviews more closely and wish I had done that first. There are multiple reviews describing similar experiences with the owner becoming defensive or offended when customers ask questions or raise concerns. After my own experience, those reviews made a lot more sense. They did correctly diagnose the failed water heater and they refunded the emergency fee, but the way everything was handled after that was unacceptable. Scheduling an urgent replacement, not showing up, not giving any advance notice, knowing three tenants were without water, then telling me "that's on you my man I don't deal with rude people" because I asked questions about an active leak is not how I would expect a professional company to operate. I would not use them again.

The appointment process was straightforward and I was promptly scheduled at my preferred time. I also received a follow-up email and phone call the day before the appointment. The plumber, Jose arrived on time, and was very courteous, even taking the time to put on shoe covers before entering my home. He did this a few times as he was back and forth to his service van. I explained that I needed to replace the dual sink's supply lines and valves, as my current plastic supply lines lacked switches in the valves to stop water, also one line was too short which caused. After discussing my needs, Jose thoroughly assessed the situation and provided a reasonable estimate. During the work, I checked in on the progress and was pleased to see that Jose was using high-quality replacement parts with supply lines long enough for the connectors. He even took the time to explain how the valve switches worked, without me asking. Once the work was completed, I reviewed everything and was satisfied with the results. The payment process was simple, and I was able to pay via credit card with no issues.

I called HEIL Plumbing when they opened at 07:30 hrs. I got a return call from Allison within 1 hour. She was able to schedule Eric (the younger) to come out the same day between 09:00 hrs and 13:00 hrs. Eric arrived at approximately 09:20 hrs. Eric quickly diagnosed the issue. This time, while he was running diagnostic checks to identify the issue, fortunately, the toilet clog cleared itself. He ran the check a number of times , including running the sink cold water to try to overload the waste line with water, to make sure that the clogged toilet was no longer an issue. Once he was satisfied that all was good, he let me know that the charge for today would be the general diagniostic charge of $95.00. Again, I was extremely satisfied with the entire process, from making an appointment, to Eric's arrival time, his pleasant demeanor and his professional knowledge. I would highly recomment Eric (the younger) with HEIL Plumbing for anyone who has a residential plumbing issue that they need to have addressed by a pleasant, knowledgeable professional.
