We found ourselves in Rawlins during our cross country journey. What a hidden gem of a place this is. Situated in a beautiful historic house, it is family run and the matriarch of the family has been the only chef since its inception. Saw all the reviews on my way through town and stopped. Unfortunately, the food was lackluster for the price. Definitely better than what we would have gotten at fast food and the wait staff was good. I ordered the Cajun ribeye for a way overpriced $28. I could have gotten equivalent food at Chili's for far less. No one ever asked how the food was after we had a chance to eat. They did split an Alfredo dish for my kids without being asked. My wife ordered a salad and threw half out because it wasn't great. Clam chowder was great. Likely won't stop again. read more

Worth a detour to Rawlins. What a top notch local find. Excellent dinner, (preparation, presentation, quality and selection) complimented by warm and attentive service makes a visit to Aspen House a wonderful experience. Chef Lena Dirck and her scratch kitchen show off her ability with each dish - hand-cut steaks, seafood and pasta dishes. Simple steak and veggies - perfect temperature filet, fresh crisp asparagus and a salad were the right choice after 5 1/2 hours on the road. A great stop - and now a destination meal. The steak was cooked the way I ordered it which is no small feat because it's hard to get a steak cooked right, but they nailed it. The menu also offered 2 salads along with pasta choices. The chicken fettuccine Alfredo was awesome and the twist for Baton Rouge style was excellent. There is a Singapore menu section as well. Portions were large and we both took leftovers home. Way overpriced. This fine dining establishment is crowded. I remember the waitress having a hard time getting the food tray through one of the door openings. I read reviews saying it's the best steak they ever had. Those people need to get out more. Everything wasn't seasoned well. I asked medium rare and it came back very rare. The duck meal had way too much of that sweet sauce that it took away from the crisp skin you expect with duck. It was sub par. Maybe for the area it is located in it's considered fine dining. I have been coming here for years every Friday night and lately the steaks look like something you buy from Walmart, full of fat and very thin, definitely not worth $25 a steak! The customer service has become by far the rudest I have seen in a long times as well. What made me write is review is because of our Valentines Day reservation we had made back in January! When we had the reservations we were told we were the first to made one so we could pick where we wanted to sit (by the owners daughter). We were also asked to call the day before to just confirm. When we called they said the reservation was never written down! They said that they could get us in at 8:30 though like they were doing us a favor! I don't know about other people but I don't want to eat at 8:30 at night when I made a reservation for 7pm over a month ago. Plus we had already bought tickets to go to the movies at 9pm. I called back to talk to the owner who is Mr. Dirk and they hung up on me! I even called them back giving them benefit of doubt it was on accident and they didn't answer, I even called them back two times and still no answer!! By far the best restaurant in town. We are new to Wyoming and have been out to many restaurants and were extremely impressed with The Aspen House. I had the lobster ravioli and my husband had the Cajun blackened chicken fettuccine. Both were excellent. We had key lime cheesecake for dessert and it was excellent as well. Reservations recommended! Cute atmosphere being in an old house, however my expectations were a little high for what we actual experienced. Food had good flavor, but just wasn't quite enough for the money. The blackened Cajun ribeye for my husband was cooked well and he enjoyed the flavor. My wife and I were moving from OR to MS and we stopped in Rawlings on our 5th wedding anniversary- a bit late in the evening. Checked in to our hotel- attached to a 'wagon wheel' type restaurant- I asked at the desk if there was a special place to celebrate our milestone. They recommended Aspen House. On our way out of the hotel my wife turned toward the wagon wheel restaurant, but I had a surprise in store... We got there in time but this special meal would push past closing. My husband and I made it as far as Rawlins, WY from California on the first leg of our trip to Sheridan, WY. After checking into a hotel, we recalled a friend's suggestion for dinner - the Aspen House. This is one review that I'd GLADLY give six stars if I could! First off it was cool to learn the history of the lovely Victorian house that was converted into this fabulous restaurant. The hostess and wait staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. My husband Jim's comment was, "They actually care about doing a good job, and are happy that you are coming to do business with them." After a VERY long drive, we were happy to make use of their full bar. I found the house cabernet perfectly nice, and Jim enjoyed a generously poured highball. Service continued to be quick, friendly and efficient throughout the night, despite being quite busy with locals...on a Wednesday night of all times! :) The green salads that preceded the entrees were fresh, crisp and delicious. I especially enjoyed the house-made vinaigrette. Jim ordered the Seafood Fettuccine Alfredo, which he said was probably the "best one that I've had anywhere in my life"...and he's ordered this dish all over California, Texas, the south. My fillet mignon was the best steak that I've had in many years...can't remember when I ate a better one. It was flavorful, cooked to perfection and made me very happy. We were too tired and full, unfortunately, to try their desserts but intend to next time we are in lovely Rawlins. This was a delight. Off the beaten path in Rawlins, Wyoming. In an old doctor's office with Victorian style decor, which really doesn't go with Asian-themed seafood and steak, but oh well. I had the special, thin slices of fresh sole breaded and lightly fried, delicious. Just a cup is white rice accompanied it, but I ordered a side of a sauce they created which was am Alfredo sauce with a little Cajun stirred in, delicious. Pathetic. I ordered curbside. Arrived, called, was told they'd be right out. Five minutes later, called again. No answer for that or the next two calls. Twelve minutes later, got through. They put the phone down and walked away and never came back. Then three more unanswered calls. Finally had to go to the door- they asked me to come in. I explained the concept of curbside and asked they bring out the food- which they did about five minutes later. Got home with cold food and discovered the fish was blackened, which I had specifically turned down when asked if I wanted the fish blackened. The only reason for three stars I'd the incredible price discrepancy between their own website and the menu shown there and about the $12-$15 difference when ordering from the menu. So every now and again you find a restaurant with fine dining grade food and top service in a little town and this is it. The fillet, rack of lamb or stir fry were off the charts not to mention the cheese cakes which are home made. As far as atmosphere it is on a treasured 1905 era house that is just perfect. Little rooms for quite conversations with piano music playing. Can't rate this place enough and remember - Aussies are fussy foodies! Full credit to the owners and their team. read more

Had a visit at this fine establishment because I was snowed in at the municipal airport. Very nice place to come eat. It's a home turned into a restaurant so it has a pretty cozy feeling. Who would expect a fine dining restaurant in Rawlings Wyoming! We were traveling and not familiar with the area, but the restaurant was recommended so we decided to give it a try. What an excellent choice! We both ordered fish, sea bass & blackened red snapper. I was a little skeptical about fresh seafood in Wyoming but was assured it was fresh not frozen. It was amazing! Fresh & well prepared and beautifully presented. The wine was great, house made raspberry vinaigrette dressing was excellent as was the key lime pie. We had to wait awhile to get in because we had no reservation but it was worth the wait. Service was great despite the fact that they had a big party to take care of. Overall a very enjoyable meal. My husband and I have tried this restaurant 3 times over the past year, thinking each time will be better than the last. We are always mistaken. Last night we decided to give it one last try, and never again. My husband ordered a ribeye (Medium rare) with garlic mashed potatoes, and I ordered the Seafood Alfredo. His steak was undercooked to the point of being blue in parts, and his mashed potatoes were cold. My pasta sauce was thick, and tasted worse than anything I've ever had from a jar. Absolutely no seasoning. Our waitress never asked us how things were going so we couldn't even complain. A $75 dollar meal was left on the table hardly touched. Do not recommend. read more

Not many choices in Rawlins to eat, but this place stands out. It is in an old Victorian house which is unique. The service was impeccable and the food was good. We got chicken dumplings to stay and the sauce that came out with it was interesting and added some flavor to the bland dumplings. I washed something spicy do I ordered the Cajun Chicken Pasta, which was spicy but not sear your mouth spicy. I also got the homemade pecan pie when was the reason for the low stars. Being from the south I have had some great pecan pie, this was not there case. It was cooked too long, the crust was not homemade, didn't have enough pecans, and was cold. Overall I wished I didn't get a dessert at all. The high prices also brought down the stars, for what we got I think we overpaid. But, like I said there is not much choice in Rawlins. read more

Three stars is what you get when you combine 5 star food with 1 star service. This restaurant is a delightful surprise in an otherwise lackluster food scene in Rawlins. The menu is sophisticated and complete and the food preparation was quick, accurate and suburb. The "back of the house" is obviously in good hands but the "front of the house" is a disaster. It's as if they hired McDonald's to staff a Michelin starred eatery. Young kids with no training or supervision were left to take reservations, seat guests, tend bar, wait tables, etc. and they were clearly overwhelmed. To be fair, they were left on their own with no adult supervision and had no idea what a fine dining was like. It was nearly impossible to get a simple glass of wine, waters glasses were empty for most of the meal, and the same server was assigned a 20 person party upstairs AND a couple in a separate room downstairs. I had to get up and seek out someone for service several times including to finally get a glass of wine and lastly, to find someone to pay. An otherwise superbly prepared meal was sabotaged by an inadequate staff. Further, the otherwise sophisticated and appropriate venue of a repurposed, Victorian house, was spoiled by crudely lettered, hand written signs throughout with cryptic memos to staff and a generally unprofessional clutter around the cash register/hostess stand. With better staffing and attention to detail, this could be an elegant respite from fast food for travelers on I-80; but for now the experience is not worth the price. read more

Every room in Rawlins is booked, but the Aspen House Restaurant took our reservation only 45 minutes before we wanted it! Champagne was chilled... it's our anniversary! We had a small private room upstairs for the three of us. It is our anniversary and we are on the road! It was lovely. The crab rangoon was delicious, rack of lamb special was fantastic with 2 chops left over. The demiglace sauce made the dish! The rib-eye steak was enough for 2 people and cooked perfectly. It's hard to understand how this place is rated as highly as it is. My husband and I were looking forward to some WY beef before leaving the state and this place was a huge disappointment. To start, the dinner rolls were microwaved so they were hard as rocks and hard to tear to enjoy the lovely oil and spices. Our steaks were tough and flavorless. A friend of mine told me how wonderful your cheeseburger royale were. After a long hard day at work, my stomach started growling and I had remembered how amazing I was told they were. I replied hold what and I guess she didn't hear me because no one came back to take my order. After waiting on hold for about an hour, my stomach began to nibble on my spine. By this time I knew I had to do something quick and all I could think about was these cheeseburgers that my trusted friend had recommended. I called again. Brrrrrrnnnng Brrrrrrnnnng. "Aspen House, how can I help you?" I told her, "I'd like to order one of your cheeseburgers?" She replied "WHAT" in this angry, grizzly bear accent. I never knew grizzly bears could be snoody or even could be uppity. She continued and in her snootiest, she/her/him/bear voice, "WE DONT SELL CHEESEBURGERS HERE" and she slammed the phone down. My stomach and my feelings were hurt and by this time I had started to sweat and shake. My head pounded like thunder and I knew I had to act quick. I called burger king and placed a order for 10 cheeseburgers without any problem whatsoever. I went to my truck and had to pull myself in, from my body being so weak. With my body under stress, I knew I had to get there quick. All of a sudden I saw flashing lights and I though I was about to pass out from my body shutting down. All I saw was black......... I came too with a flashlight in my face. An officer started asking me was I drunk and to step out of the vehicle. I could be more detailed with the traffic stop, but I'll save that review for the police department. Needless to say, he wrote me a speeding ticket for going 4 miles over the posted speed limit. OMG soook hungry. I took back off and made it to Burger King. They brought my burgers without a hitch. As I sit here in the parking lot and eating my first burger, I found my energy level start coming back up. There is no way I could leave this comment guys if it weren't for Burger King. In conclusion, I'd just like to warn anyone if they decide to order a cheeseburger royale from Aspen House. They almost killed me. Why couldn't they sell me one? I know they have them. My family and I stopped here for lunch on our way through town because of the Yelp reviews we had read. It's in a lovely Victorian home. We were very pleased with the menu selections, as well as the prices. All entrees, including burgers and sandwiches, come with a choice of soup or salad. All the food was very good. I especially liked the homemade horseradish dressing that came with my Thai Steak Sandwich. The staff was friendly, and service was quick which was important to us since we needed to get back on the road. Our only suggestion would be to add a little more seasoning to the meat.
