Craving foie gras so found the best foie gras in town. This Michelin recommended spot in back bay looks low-key on the outside but is clearly hiding main character energy. Prix fixe menu ($125) and a minimalist vibe. Also... the silverware is hidden in a drawer?? So fun. The foie gras was easily the best I've had! Perfectly seared - melts like butter but somehow not greasy, and the shell thing added a crunchy texture. Another dish I was super impressed by was the cabbage, they gave this super common veggie a new lift by pairing it with a savory toasted bread sauce and most importantly truffle! The cocoa-rubbed venison with black garlic glaze was so unique. Meat was chewy, and the radish gave it a refreshing taste. The cauliflower came out like art, with the savory kale puree and crispy chicken skin. I don't love veggies but those dishes are seriously so delicious I can eat cauliflower all day. Service was pretty fast and attentive, but it would be nice to have some sort of acknowledgement for a special occasion celebration. Of all the tasting menus in Boston, save your money and skip this one. The short is we left hungry and sober after spending a bit over $500 with tip on dinner with pairings for 2. Half of the dishes were ones we've had better versions of at other restaurants with one element that felt like they were trying to put a clumsy spin on a classic. One halved grape sitting in the bottom of a truffle agnolotti and two large chunks of orange in an acidic squash soup stand out as particularly odd. Some of the wine pairings overwhelmed the dishes instead of complementing them, although the passionfruit dessert and duck with their pairings were notable exceptions and were excellent. There was an inconsistent level of seasoning, with some dishes like the halibut falling completely flat. The service was good, although the descriptions of each dish were brief, matching the depth of flavor. The presentation was mixed, some were beautifully plated and others felt like they'd just ladled/slapped it on. Based on other reviews, we were expecting unique, innovative, and complex dishes and instead found ourself discussing during each course other restaurants that had made the same dish better. We had a wonderful time celebrating our anniversary at Asta. While it doesn't boast the same elegant decor of Deauxave next door, it amply makes up for it by offering one of the finest tasting menus I've tried in Boston. It goes toe-to-toe (and I'd even dare to say, surpasses) some well-known Boston institutions such as Mooncusser, SRV, and the former Menton and No. 9 Park. The soft shell crab, duck, and foie gras were all winners, and the vegetables all incredibly fresh. Service is very prompt and polished, and they so graciously accommodated a number of dietary restrictions. Overall, a dinner to remember and a restaurant we will surely return to! read more

Ambiance is decent- no complaints. Very small but makes it intimate. Waiter comes up to us and it's just super weird from the start. We were told there would be a six course meal tonight and that everything would be a surprise in a manner and self-styling than screamed Williamsburg and further pretentiousness. I asked to see an actual menu because there are certain things I don't like and was considering the vegetarian option (which the waiter said they had no menu for). I also asked for a wine list and he said they also didn't have that but asked me what I liked. I said a glass of Pinot Grigio sounded good and they said they did not have that either but they could bring me a sample of something "in the style of Pino Grigio." Omg this place is so much work. What they arrived with had bubbles and I tried again with a Sauvignon Blanc which was of course a jerk pour but whatever. Again, you don't even know if they are bringing you a $15 or $40 glass of wine. Not cool. My husband paid so idk how much it was but not right. Also apparently when recapping this misery of an evening with my husband, he noted that they didn't even itemize the bill. Went with the regular menu but asked to sub out the duck for anything else. They said they could do fennel (which I also hate) but this was exhausting already so I said fine. They wound up bringing out fish.... not fennel?? Idk but that was better than fennel as a main course. But again, what is happening here? Food: Horrific. I've never experienced such garbage in my life. Presentation was decent but the food itself had absolutely no flavor. Bland as hell as other helpers have commented on. I wanted to ask for salt and pepper. I greatly enjoyed my meal at asta. Dishes were creative and delicious. The tasting was heavy on vegetables and being a meat eater I was surprised how satisfying these dishes were. Flavors were bold on the main courses l. The vegetable dishes were more delicate in flavor, but still very good. IThe staff is also very nice. I came solo and felt right at home. I forget the nuances of the dish but here is an overall review 1)White gazpacho salmon broth - very delicate. Very freshing. We had an amazing meal at Asta last weekend. We had the tasking menu plus the foie gras add on and wine pairings. It was so much fun. We loved the butternut squash soup with cod fritters (I thought they were a tad too salty, my partner did not). Next was the rutabaga with puffed rice which was warm and peppery. The ricotta agnolotti with truffle was devine. So was the sablefish with broccoli and a kind of buckwheat. The foie gras with roasted pineapple was maybe the best foie gras I've ever had. The palette cleanser was mandarin oranges with oat milk foam and crunchy oats, and dessert was a sweetened squash. We loved every bite! I didn't love the first thing we were served - duck liver in a crisp. I am not a huge liver fan and it tasted like liver! :). And the steak with beets was fine, but not out of this world. Loving 6 our of 8 courses seems like a great score. I asked for a non-alcoholic wine pairing, and everything they served was so good. We left with a small bag and salt and pepper candied popcorn and some sesame candy. Yum! Overall, the creative and inventive meal was one of the best we've had in Boston in a long time. Asta, is one of the worst restaurants in Boston. My wife and I are both vegan and were excited to experience their tasting menu. We expected the small portion sizes but hoped for a variety of tastes and flavors to go along with the experience. Instead, what we received was a bland, uninspired mess of an evening. Each dish was worse than the next, leaving such a foul taste in your mouth that the wine pairing became mandatory as a palate cleanser. To make things worse, the quality of the food being served was below what you'd find at a traditional chain restaurant. From the limp cabbage to the "earthy" potatoes, nothing that was presented even came close to what you would expect from a similar dining experience elsewhere. Dishes were served at inappropriate lukewarm temperatures,"creative" dishes didn't mesh together(especially the raspberry potatoes), and there was really no experience or atmosphere to speak of. Possibly the worst part of all is that it took almost 3 hours from start to finish to end our horror of an evening. At the very least, they could have bought us all of our bland food quickly so that we could leave and find some joy literally anywhere else in the world. A meal for two with a shared wine paring costs $330. For the experience we had, I would have felt better about myself if I'd simply been mugged outside of the restaurant. At least that way I would have had the opportunity to resist being taken advantage of. If you are in Boston, and looking for a place that serves an enjoyable edible meal, please save yourself the trouble and avoid Asta at all costs. I'm also sensitive to post-pandemic staffing and food supply challenges. However the tasting menu at Asta is a COMPLETE RIPOFF. The first course (a tiny piece of charred leek) didn't arrive until 30 minutes in. The first 3 vegetable courses were each hardly even a full bite. The 4th dish- soft shell crab -- was also very small, and the next- duck -arrived cold. A few times our waiter asked how everything was, I gave honest answers and he just walked away without replying. Very subpar service for the price. Really great restaurant with a nice take out option during covid. For only $30, you can get a delicious meal for take out! We decided to try it for date night and were not disappointed. They have daily meals and you can also add on desserts and other things like soup stock and chili. We were pleasantly surprised with a little appetizer of Deanne sesame caramel popcorn and a leek salad. The main was lamb stew with bulgar pilaf. Portions were huge (see photo!) Wonderful food and wonderful service! The restaurant is easy to get to in Back Bay. We had a 7pm reservation and when we arrived were seated promptly and given a glance of sparkling wine free of charge. If you don't know, Asta is a tasting menu type restaurant. The standard is a 6 course meal with two optional courses. The menu changes daily and when we came, during Covid, the two optional courses were foie gras and/or connecticut cheese. Food overall was Excellent 9/10 The plates were all unique and had a variety of flavors. The squid, duck and dessert were my favorites. Two of us also decided to try the cheese and it was excellent. Wine 10/10 We had the German Riesling it was excellent and even our non drinking members thought it was good. Service - 10/10 Very good and attentive service. As mentioned our party really enjoyed this place and I'd definitely come back. Only note is that it could be a bit pricey. 8.5/10: Asta is one of Boston's better known tasting menu restaurants. They have a rotating menu with local ingredients in an open kitchen. I'd recommend sitting at the high top, so you can take in all the action. The chef was trained in both the traditional/local (L'Espalier) and experimental/foreign (Noma). You can see both influences at Asta. The preparation relies on French principles. Think pures and clean presentations. But there's a bit of edginess with their stone plating and foams. That all being said, nothing was a stand out. The scallops were nicely prepared. Otherwise, the flavors were a bit muted. Most dishes skewed towards a light acidity. As much as it pains me to write a negative review of this chic spot, it it's simply not worth the price. As a diner who has attended many different tasting menu restaurants, Asta's food could not justify the prices (and I have spent more at tasting restaurants that I would attend again). To put it plainly: Too. Many. Root. Vegetables. It practically became a joke with my family and I throughout the meal. My parents both ordered the 5 course meal, and after a turnip, they received a large hunk of celery root with shaved truffle that quite literally tasted more like dirt than truffle. The 5 course meal was about $80, so paying 16 dollars for two very similar, large root vegetables felt silly. The best dish was the lamb, and the cod was okay. I ordered the 8 course menu, and for one of my courses, again it was a half of a sweet potato with glaze and was simply too much for a tasting menu--especially given it was another root vegetable after following a potato Latke. There were definitely dishes I enjoyed such as the venison and the beet (another root veggie) with oxtail I believe. The food wasn't bad (besides the celery root), but the price was simply not justified in the slightest. As the reviews and the website say, tasting menu only. Your only choice is how many courses and whether you drop for the wine pairings. They claim that the 8 course is more creative. I'll believe it. We had some weird but great vegetable items -- mushroom dumpling with celeriac skin, charred pumpkin leaves in tomato, and a cabbage cornbread dessert were the most memorable. It was a perfect amount of food for the slightly hungry but not ravenous -- it's tasting, but not the two bite portions you may fear. Definitely one of the better meals I've had this year. I would get the wine pairings. First, you go through such a variety of dishes that it's almost impossible for one bottle to meet them all. Second, they are generous with the pours, and you can ask for seconds if something really tickles your taste buds. Some were not to my personal preference, but none were bad, and they generally did match the dish. Now, the bad news, this is a $200-300pp experience. No bread or anything in the meantime so if you come hungry then you're absolutely starving. I think after that was 2 asparagus and some sauce. We came back to Asta a couple of months ago. While we enjoy a quieter environment, I was really surprised to see only 2 dinner parties including ourselves there on a Friday night. As usual, you get served some free champagne right away and the menu consists of 5 course and a 8 course options. The boys chose the 8 course and the gals 5 course. I won't go in to details about every dish here but our impression was that the menu this night was overwhelmingly vegetarian-heavy. The guys honestly barely had any protein in their dishes so both of them dug into our meat dish. And the portion of the 8 course dinner was much smaller and the overall amount of food probably even less than the 5 course, though it costs more. These 2 factor combined together unfortunately made the guys still hungry at the end of the dinner. In addition, while we understand the amount of work and attention that goes into each dish, paying this much money for a largely vegetarian meal (when we didn't intend it to be this way) felt a bit overpriced. So I will just say that my 2nd time at Asta was not nearly as good as the first one. Had this been the only time I've eaten at Asta, the rating would be significantly lower. However I loved my first meal at Asta and know that they have the potential to be so much better, thus I'm only dropping 1 star. read more

The taste of food is way too fair compare to Michelin restaurants's dishes. Comparing to restaurants which are at the same price level, I leave this place a 3* and I really want see this place make progress. New American dishes are hard to create and I can tell this restaurant is trying to make New American style dishes which basically should be delicate and creative. I am attracted by the environment in the first place. Delicate seats, half-open styled kitchen make me feel comfortable. More importantly, they keep the restaurant extremely clean. They don't have a menu. Only choices of 5 courses and 8 courses are provided. In order to try as many dishes as possible, I chose the 8 one. Fermented beets is the pre-meal appetizer. I am not a beet fan, but this one tastes sweet and nice. The salad comes next, the salt seems not to be dissolved firmly. Some parts taste extremely salty, some parts are bland. The ice cream at the bottom is creative. Salad is always a challenging course. This dish is not really palatable. Squid with green beans is much better. The spice and ingredients in this dish really provide a rich flavor. Love this one. Zucchini noodles as the next dish is very creative. Using zucchini itself as the noodles provides a vegetable flavor noodles. Although adding with heavy spices, this dish tastes refreshing. Foie gras is poached. They use a thick layer of pepper and other ingredients to clean up the taste of organs. Jerk chicken as one of the main courses also comes with a heavy layer of mysterious sauce which is too salty. However, the crispy bread and butter which has a slight coconut taste come with it are delicious. Veal with green tomatoes is my favorite one so far. The veal itself is very soft. You don't even need a knife for it. It is a pity that this dish is too salty as well. They serve tofu with brown sugar as a dessert. Not bad! Simple, buInnovative and scrumptious! A must try tasting menu in Boston MA ! Very good service, relaxed atmosphere and delicious Tasting menu! Very surprised !You must try it when you come to Boston. The seasoning and food are quite layered, the ingredients are fresh and creative, and the soft shell crab is fried better than most Japanese restaurant dishes, which is not easy. Simple Matsutake with asparagus and simple seasoning can get the freshness and fragrance of Matsutake itself. Roasted quail with dried plums and sweet and sour pickled apricots is a great match , sautéed Foie Gras with crispy meringue frosting on top, Grapefruit-based sauce and fresh Grapefruit on the bottom. It didn't feel greasy because of the pairings, and has a good taste and layering. There are crispy salty biscuits and some pickled vegetables under the grilled cheese. I try very hard to visit the top trending or reviewed restaurants within the Boston area; obviously recently Asta made those ranks and it meant I had to visit. We were fortunate enough to grab a reservation last minute for 4 on a Saturday night at 9PM -- though unfortunately this meant we had to stand and wait aimlessly for the party (that had already paid and decided to sit and waste time) to get up and leave before we could be seated. Fortunately, they were kind enough to provide some prosecco's on the house, though I just wish they kindly asked the table of older folks to leave after so much time had already passed. This clearly wasn't the best start to the night, by the time we sat and were given menus and water (very rushed no less) it was 10 and we knew we'd be here a lot later than we would like. We naturally tried the 8 and 10 course tastings offered to us and honestly have to say most dishes was rather odd and disappointing. Though we had a few memorable textures and unique flavors, for the most part it wasn't awe inspiring or worthy of it's grand price tag. The paired wines were wonderful, however, you can't complain much about alcohol when you're already starving. One dish worth mentioning that was incredibly horrible though was the pigeon. This in itself is a rather extreme thing to try for the first time, we were adventurous and attempted to take a bite and was hit with the most vile collection of tastes and textures we could've imagined. One of our party members actually gagged. It wasn't great. We completed our menus, thanked the really well informed server and staff (who were starting to clean up since we were literally the last people left there) and went about our night. We did have more food elsewhere after. Overall, overpriced, over-hyped, not sure what I paid for in terms of experience honestly.
