Chicken shawarma sandwich, my bad for the pic, I got too excited. The salad on top is hiding the chicken, hummus, and garlic sauce.

They're back! New owners, new menu, new everything I guess, but finally Astor is open. Stopped in on day 1 after seeing the OPEN sign lit up in the window, first to actually confirm and later to get takeout. The folks there were really nice, the restaurant is really attractive and clean, and it feels a bit like it was back when old Astor was good. The menu still seems to be a work in progress, and they are working out glitches in their online ordering, but the food is solid! Got chicken shawarma sandwich, beef shawarma sandwich, kofta sandwich, and a cheesesteak, and everyone raved. Their hummus was really good, their baba ganoush was incredible. Honestly, we were ready to cut them a lot of slack being brand new, but I'm really impressed. For those old timers who can remember Astor from two owners ago, this is much more like that quality-wise than the reboot that only lasted a year or two. You might need to be a bit patient while they figure things out, but it's worth it, at least so far. So great to have another option in Lyon Park. I'm definitely trying again, will post an update and better pics next time.

The service was AMAZING! The owner was very kind, told us all about his kitchen, and he shared free food (the date pastries are delicious, and lentil soup to warm a cold night). Besides the hospitality, the food was warm and delicious. There is plenty of indoor seating for large groups, the portions are HUGE (my shawarma platter is enough for 3 meals!), and it was priced very affordably. An added bonus: their rice pudding was fluffy and delicious.

Update - I'll give it 4 for the pizza. Crust is a little thicker but still chewy, the Greek pizza was pretty good with feta, gyro meat, pepperoncini and olives, tomatoes and garlic. Super garlicky. Tomatoes were great with the thicker crust. Super easy to order online and ready when you get there. Fries are also good for $2. Gyro is just ok, but only $6.50, quick and easy.

The food came out fairly quick, but immediately looking at the chickpeas it was much less than I anticipated. The rice however was appetizing: probably the best part about this entire meal. The beef was flavorful however couldn't overlook how burnt it was and the charcoal like coating on it. Definitely could've been cooked way less. The steak and cheese wrap was your average wrap. The meat on this was better than beef kebob but not by much.

Tried their falafel platter - comes with hummus, falafel, salad, and pita. Love it so much!! Will go again! :)

We only ordered drinks, and to start, we had the pistachio espresso martini. It was so delicious. The rim of crushed pistachios was the perfect touch. My second drink was the lemon elixir, and although I'm not a fan of the tartness of lemon, I did really like this drink. I think the creaminess overshadowed the tartness for me. My last drink of the night was the orange dreamsicle. This was definitely my favorite out of the three! It wasn't overwhelmingly sweet and had a creaminess to it that I enjoyed. On top of the tasty drinks, we had an amazing waiter! He made sure to explain all the drinks to us and he was very accommodating. I'll definitely be back to visit next time I'm in the area!

The espresso martinis were a little too sweet and taste more like chocolate milk than a martini. My favorite dish of the night were the fries, everything was decent at most. Not a single dish stood out to us in any way. We tried the Octopus, lamb shank for two, chicken kebabs, and tzatziki dip. The lamb was bland and needed salt while the chicken was super bland and dry. The octopus was OK and the tzatziki was decent. The fries were the only really tasty dish of the night. I'd skip Layli as not one single dish made us want to come back, especially for the price. Dining with my friend on Lebanese cuisine was a delightful culinary adventure filled with surprises…read moreand delights. Moussaka: A classic Lebanese dish. Eggplant and hummus were simmered until soft and flavorful, with a subtle smoky aroma. The addition of mint leaves enhanced the flavor. Bone Marrow: Beef tartare with bone marrow and pomegranate seeds--how interesting! The first two provided a rich, fatty texture and intense aroma, while the latter burst in your mouth occasionally, juicy, tangy, and refreshing. Brussels Sprouts: Brussels sprouts with grapes, walnuts, fig jam, and mint yogurt--a whimsical yet magical combination... The Brussels sprouts offered a fresh, vegetal aroma and a slightly roasted aroma; the walnuts provided a nutty richness and crunch; the fruit provided a fresh sweet and sour taste and plenty of juice; and the yogurt acted as a binder between the flavors while adding a touch of minty coolness. Duck Shawarma: My friend and I thought: ...Peking duck? The skin was soft, the meat tender, not gamey, with a subtle smoky flavor; the fig and lemon sauce was sweet and refreshing; the small pita pillows held the meat securely, better than the lettuce what might have been too cold. Lamb Stuffed Grape Leaves: Black rice was wrapped in grape leaves and simmered with minced lamb. The rice absorbed the fragrance of the grape leaves, similar to lotus leaves (my friend and I thought: lamb version of sticky rice chicken糯米雞...?). The lamb, however, was served separately at the bottom of the pot and didn't absorb much flavor; overall, it was intensely sour. In short, this dish was a bit oddly designed, and it was the only one we didn't finish because the sourness was unbearable. Pita Bread: The bread was thin yet chewy, with a rough, slightly powdery surface, making it substantial and satisfying. I especially loved the "everything wrapped in a big pancake" style!
