Mediterranean comfort food. We wanted to grab dinner after a movie at the Courthouse AMC, and played Yelp roulette to find a highly rated spot close to where we were that we hadn't tried yet. So, here we were. The space was open, clean, and inviting. It reminded me of a number of restaurants I've visited in the Middle East, and particularly Dubai. Not fancy, so much as down-to-earth and inviting. My wife and I shared a Chicken shawarma platter and a plate of fries. Simple things first, the fries were perfection. Crispy on the outside, hot and tender on the inside, and tasty through and through. The shawarma had plenty of chicken over a bed of soft white rice and was accompanied by some salad. It was a perfect meal for a weirdly cold May afternoon. On our way out, I mentioned to the owner that the food was really good, because it was, and mentioned that the shawarma wasn't quite as tasty as some that I've had in my travels. His face brightened, and he said that next time I should ask for it a bit spicier. Next time I'm back, and there will be a next time, I'll ask for spicier. Wow! This food is fresh. I was ready for lunch but so tired of fried, wraps or sandwiches. There's Astor right in the corner. Big enough to bring friends and so clean. I was warmly greeted and surprised at the number of vegetarian offerings and Mediterranean standards like swarma. I picked lamb and added a rice pudding for a treat. The lamb was so fresh and tender. Vegetables and rice were fresh and flavorful. Oh! The rice pudding was creamy and flavorful what a nice finish. But wait. They also carry Divont chocolates and date desserts. They're back! New owners, new menu, new everything I guess, but finally Astor is open. Stopped in on day 1 after seeing the OPEN sign lit up in the window, first to actually confirm and later to get takeout. The folks there were really nice, the restaurant is really attractive and clean, and it feels a bit like it was back when old Astor was good. The menu still seems to be a work in progress, and they are working out glitches in their online ordering, but the food is solid! Got chicken shawarma sandwich, beef shawarma sandwich, kofta sandwich, and a cheesesteak, and everyone raved. Their hummus was really good, their baba ganoush was incredible. Honestly, we were ready to cut them a lot of slack being brand new, but I'm really impressed. For those old timers who can remember Astor from two owners ago, this is much more like that quality-wise than the reboot that only lasted a year or two. You might need to be a bit patient while they figure things out, but it's worth it, at least so far. So great to have another option in Lyon Park. The food, service, and attention to detail are unparalleled. While Arlington is filled with dining options, this gem is truly in a league of its own. We have only had takeout (which holds up wonderfully, by the way), and each time I am blown away by how delicious and fresh everything is. The kofta is perfectly seasoned, the chicken brochette is irresistible, and the falafel is shockingly moist and flavorful. The hummus is so fresh, you will eat it straight from the container, and the fries and wings are the perfect little extras. I can confidently say, you will not be disappointed. The service was AMAZING! The owner was very kind, told us all about his kitchen, and he shared free food (the date pastries are delicious, and lentil soup to warm a cold night). Besides the hospitality, the food was warm and delicious. There is plenty of indoor seating for large groups, the portions are HUGE (my shawarma platter is enough for 3 meals!), and it was priced very affordably. I was in town with my family visiting some relatives and we order takeout from Astor. There were 7 of us so it was decent sized order. Everything was fantastic. A few of us got the mixed grille, a couple got the chicken shawarma bowl and we had a couple other random dishes. Plus some rice and wings. Not only was the food great but the folks working there were so lovely. They gave us some cookies and tea while we waited a few minutes for the order to be packed up. Great place, good service, great food! This place has a wide variety of food, from mediterranean to sandwiches and pizza. I love their half chickens and legs of lamb, and their side dishes are great; the "astor vegetarian" plate is like a sampler of the cold side dishes, and sometimes I get then even though I'm not vegetarian. They also have great pitas. I can't really vouch for their sandwiches and pizzas, though, because I usually stick with ethnic foods when I'm at an ethnic restaurant. They don't do table service, generally. You order at the counter and then they call your number when it's done. You are supposed to bus your own table. However, they are very friendly to us, and sometimes will bring it out. Plus, this setup keeps the cost down (the place is pretty inexpensive) and you don't have to do a 15-20% tip, so I'm all for it. read more

Update - I'll give it 4 for the pizza. Crust is a little thicker but still chewy, the Greek pizza was pretty good with feta, gyro meat, pepperoncini and olives, tomatoes and garlic. Super garlicky. WOW!...is all I can say! Great spot for your Mediterranean food fix! This is by far the best Mediterranean food I have ever had in this area! I often would pass up on this place for lunch...but on this particular day, I decided to make a stop here to take a healthy break from the regular lunch norm in the Arlington/Clarendon area. You know?!....Chipotle "overkill," Subway "ill Na Na," Wendy's "I'm on strike!," McDonald's "Stratch n' Sniff!".....you get the point! Simply put, I get tired of going repeatedly to places that have you at stale mate. Astor Mediterranean is the exception here. The service is friendly, fast and the menu is vast...full of healthy, noteworthy food options. Although I mainly stick with the gyros, lamb shank, and salad options....there are many more delicious items to choose from at this place; both for the carnivore and vegetarian at heart! I highly recommend: * THE GYRO WRAP PLATTER! -- It's HUGE and for a small price, you will be completely content and filled. Your stomach will be doing the happy dance and thank you for it later. It is juicy, packed with meat that is seasoned to kingdom come. The feta, tomato, cucumber, red onion & tahini (cucumber-dill sauce) sets this dish off proper! The way this sandwich is put together is "tasteful" art itself! Order it and you will know what I am talking about....LOL. My flavor meter and senses are heightened every time with this meal. It is somewhat messy and the calorie count is unknown.....but you only live once, so who cares!? Carpe Diem. * THE KUFTA PLATTER w/ 2 SIDES -- For, roughly $8 bucks....ground sirloin and lamb that's seasoned and seared to perfection. It was packed with meat, tzatsiki, feta, tomato, cucumber, red onion & cilantro.....And, so delicious! I have also tried the hummus dip and beet salad. Both were really good and tasted fresh, well-seasoned. I am not a big fan of beets unless in fresh-pressed juices......but this restaurant have changed my opinion on alternative ways of eating this remarkable "Superfood" for sure! LOL. Mmmmm.....And last but not least, try the mint tea lemonade. My favorite!...A burst of lemon and mint, that's not too overpowering and is in perfect balance of each other to quench the palette. This is probably one of the best drinks I've ever had the pleasure of ordering at a restaurant....without alcohol. :) OVERALL: 5 Stars!....To the moon and back! I ordered a lamb gyro and a side of chickpeas and rice. I went on a Sunday, early evening. For this place not to have table service, they were a bit on the more expensive side for just one person. By the time I ordered my food with a lemonade on the side, my meal was almost $17. The food was delicious! My gyro was listed as almost $7, and it was totally worth every penny!!! It really was that good!!! I also ordered the chickpeas and rice side dish. The chickpeas had great flavor and went very well with my gyro. It was a decent portion size as well. It's like getting two sides in what they consider one side dish. You basically pay for the two sides as the price for it was $6. I know this place probably gets a lot of regular customers because the food is very good. My reasoning for the 4 stars is the price with lack of table service. read more

Sadly I can no longer recommend Astor Mediterranean. They used to have amazing food and service, that is no longer the case. Stopped by for lamb shank, rice and chickpeas. I clearly stated I was going to eat in, cashier confirmed my order. Fifteen minutes later I hear three employees arguing over whether the lamb shank was to go or eat in. They had packaged the meal to go, set aside and never said it was ready. After starting to eat, I wished I had never crossed the threshold of the restaurant, the lamb was over cooked, dry and gamey the rice was grainy and tasteless, the chickpeas were actually pretty good, but they were stingy on the portion size of the one good thing on the plate. My first time at this location, but the one in Adams Morgan was superb. This one, not so much. Pretty mediocre in every way, although it could be because we arrived shortly before closing. My Astro burger was way over cooked and dry. I would have had them try it again, but once again it was late. The bun didn't make any impression on me at all and wasn't even toasted or heated in any way. It was just a mushy meat holder. The spicy chick peas were good, I really enjoyed how spicy and saucy they were. If in the neighborhood late at night, I'd probably stick to the chick peas and some bread to eat with them. Too bad as they have a vast offering, I'm just not inclined to give them a chance to let me down again. read more

I'm writing this to let everyone that Astor is apparently closed temporarily (as of today, 2/2/2020). I ordered online, got the confirmation and receipt and all emailed to me, drove over to find them closed due to an (unspecified) problem. May be recent, but clearly not something that just happened today, and the place looks half under renovation, so they won't be open tomorrow either. No note on the website or anything. Anyway, long-time big fan of Astor, their veggie pizza may be the best pizza I've ever had (including pizzas with meat). Hope they open back up soon! read more

The decor is nice, the people are friendly, but the prices are a bit high for what you get. Went on a Friday night and got the falafel platter. It was anything but a platter. It was 4 small discs of deep fried falafel, not the large balls that I'm use to for the same price. Plus no selection of toppings. It came with a single wrap, not pita bread. Around that was smothered hummus, lettuce, and other vegetables. This meant I had to pile things in the wrap and roll it up, resulting in a very messy meal that overall left me feeling a little cheated. It was not filling. A couple of good points, though, is that they have large pieces of Baklava. A little dry but still good. Also free refills were very nice. Overall I'm giving this 2 stars because the prices do not meet the value and proportion of what I got. read more

The food is good and the place has a nice welcoming feel to it. The service is bad. And something cheap happened today: I usually get the same thing, the falafel sandwich, and I ask for the jalapeño "green" sauce on the side. Today told me that it's an additional 55 cent. I told them I have never been charged in the last 14 months of eating here, he said they just started. Ok, not a biggie. So I paid the 55 cent, and the guy hands me the sauce. I looked at the sauce and couldn't believe, there is literally half a small spoon worth of sauce. Consistently inconsistent ): I used to absolutely love all of Astor's food, was definitely the best Mediterranean place in the general area (from my searching). It was always well seasoned, great tender meat, and priced appropriately. Unfortunately, things have changed a lot since management changed (or so I assume). Almost every time I go the food portion, price, seasoning, flavor, and/or meat quality changes. It's super disappointing because there are occasions where the food captures what it was before, and that's why I haven't given up on them. On another note: Service is crap... I'm not gonna lie, service has always been below average, but before I felt their hospitality through their food. Now- not so much. They are slow, often rude, and just odd individuals. The back kitchen staff seem to be on the ball but everyone else seems confused by their environment. They hardly ever are considerate when taking orders and are painfully slow with take out and dine in orders. There is also almost always someone doing an odd-ball activity outside; shuffling furniture, painting furniture, contemplating furniture(?), smoking a cigarette, arguing on the phone, you name it. Kinda fun entertainment while you wait though. All-in-all, take a chance on Astor because there is goodness somewhere in there. read more

I had a poor experience on Sunday 6/23 evening. I walked in to five people standing waiting for food, two were for delivery services and three were customers. I quickly placed an order and then spent 30 minutes waiting for my food. During the 30 minutes, I watched very significant disorganization and disagreement among the four people working behind the counter. Multiple people waiting for their food were not told their order was ready. I watched two customers express frustration that they didn't get what they ordered. It was disappointing to observe how hard the employees all were working, yet there wasn't a single person in charge and nobody was keeping track of which food had been prepared and ready for customers. The third time I was asked what I ordered at the 30-minute mark, I realized that my french fries had been sitting getting cold for 20 minutes but my other two items hadn't been even started yet (or went away in some else's order). I couldn't wait any longer, particularly that they hadn't started on my sandwich yet so I said I would cancel my order and take my money back. Unfortunately there wasn't a Manager present to refund me. I left without my money or my food. I'll likely go back and give them another chance, but do hope the Owner or Manager is aware that the customer service and kitchen management was very poor on Sunday evening and this was apparent to all of the customers who were present that evening. You are an important restaurant in Adams Morgan and I hope this was just a one-off (though from Yelp reviews it seems it is becoming common?) This is my favorite Mediterranean spot in NOVA. I normally get the Gyro which is filling especially for the price. Other times I will get the Greek Salad with Gyro meat. I was also surprised how good and fresh the chicken kabobs were. I go here few times a month, quality is consistent. The vegetarian platter is also good, especially the Baba Ghanooj! I'm not too big on french fries but really like them here, I will always steal some fries when a co-worker is not looking.
