Known for their specialty donuts, Astro also does fried chicken and sandwiches. Their signature asteroid comes with a spicy fried chicken breast that is topped with lettuce, pickles, coleslaw and comeback sauce. I opted to have it on a cheddar biscuit that made the sandwich super heavy but 100% worth it. Their chicken was not dry and the coleslaw helped to balance out the richness. A good sandwich but be prepared to knockout right after.
Some of the best donuts I've ever had!! The dough was so soft and fluffy, and the fillings/glazes were scrumptious. We tried the cherry blossom, pb&j, banana pudding, and vanilla glazed. All of them were phenomenal, but my favorite was the cherry blossom! It was filled with a delicious jam and topped with a perfectly sweet and creamy icing. The design was adorable, too. They nailed the pb&j flavor of the pb&j donut, and the banana pudding cream filling was really good. I only wish the vanilla glazed had more glaze on it, but that's just me. I'm amazed at how moist the donuts were even though I left them on the counter for awhile before eating them. Some donuts get dry and stale as they sit, but not these! The store itself is tiny, but the service was great and I love how they offer fun and unique flavors. Their donuts are really special and tasty, and I cannot wait to come back. I'm obsessed!
This is a restaurant that combines tow of my favorite things, donuts and fried chicken. It is a small shop, but it is connected to a larger Beer Hall with the same name. I assume that you could sit and eat at that dining area. They also have a few tables and chairs outside to eat. The donuts are exotic. These are not the kind of donuts that you would buy a dozen of. They are a bit on the pricey side. The place also has fried chicken pieces and sandwiches to go with the donuts. My interaction with them was very limited but, the staff was ok. They did there job. They were not overly friendly and did not provide any advice. I ordered the two piece chicken and a donut (Samoa). It took them about 10 minutes to get my food ready. I took it back to my hotel and ate it there. The donut was amazing. It was so good. The chicken was not the best that I have had, but it was decent and I would definitely get it again. The food here is really good and I definitely recommend checking this unique spot out.
Updating my review of the doughnuts: I was pretty disappointed my 3rd time eating Astro's 'nuts, esp bc I brought my doughnut "conoisseur" friend. The holiday flavors we tried were pretty underwhelming, especially for the price. I still stand by their classic PB_J and jelly filled - that's where Astro really shines, but the cream/custard filled ones like Creme Brulee and the toppings-based ones like Maple Bacon were all on the side of being overwhelmingly sugary / saccharine and lacking flavor balance. It was hard to enjoy the actual flavors of the maple, bacon, or brulee custard. The texture of the yeasty (non-cake) varieties were a bit dry, dense, and chewy. These shortcomings stand out when you've recently had Donut Run doughnuts. If they weren't 5-$7 a piece there wouldn't be much room to complain, but for this price, the quality and flavor balance needs to come up a notch or two. Clearly better than Dunkin or 7-11 of course, but Krispy Kreme and especially Donut Run in Takoma Park certainly give a lot better flavor for the price.
We stopped by Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken to try both the chicken and the donuts. The Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich had great flavor and was enjoyable, although the chicken portion was smaller than we expected for a sandwich priced at over $10. We also sampled the glazed donut along with a couple of the seasonal flavors. The donuts were fresh and had good flavor, but they didn't particularly stand out compared to other specialty donut shops. They were medium-sized and, at around $5 each, felt a bit pricey for what you receive. Overall, Astro is a solid place to grab a bite if you're in the area, especially if you're craving both fried chicken and donuts in one stop.

I can't even ... learned about Astro by chance on my last trip to DC. Best donuts I have ever had. Back in DC for first time and tried Astro again. I mean ... what are the odds that this place really does have the best donuts in the country. So ... it's true! The level of deliciousness on these things is mind blowing. And when I talk to locals, they tell me that this place also has the best fried chicken. I haven't had a chance to try that yet. But I am literally recommending these things to random people I run into in elevators because I feel like anyone who appreciates a good doughnut needs to try these. It's unreal how delicious they are!
The coating of the fried chicken is light but crunchy. There's a lot of black pepper and a spicy kick to the coating. There's a giant piece of chicken breast and a small wing piece! The chicken could have been a little more moist but it was delicious! The right amount of seasoning in the coating and the right amount of thickness to this coating made this Astro fried goodness out of this world! I would come back to try the doughnuts! The folks in DC sure fry up some mean chicken. I did not go to this site. My sister picked this up for me! Next time, I will make it a point to stop by!

Donuts and chicken! We were there a little bit early for lunch so I picked up a breakfast chicken biscuit and a doughnut. The Keylime doughnut I chose was one of the best I have ever had. The chicken biscuit was really tasty. It's kind of biscuits you only get in the south that are flaky and delicious all at the same time. I have had better chicken overall, but this chicken was really good. It was juicy and crispy at the same time and packed with flavor. SERVICE: service was great! I wanted to order a lunch sandwich, but they had not yet opened the lunch menu. But the person behind the counter was able to help me find exactly what I wanted anyway and just modified one of the breakfast biscuits. It was delicious! COST: overall, cost was reasonable for what you get. Because it was so good I would've paid more but overall, in comparison to other places, it was competitive and well worth it.
Quality ingredients plus freshness equals out of this World deliciousness. Cherry blossom doughnut is a must get. And I'm pretty sure any flavor is great too. Regret not getting any chicken but I was too full. Obvious choice for doughnut lovers. Recommended. Special, Three for three fifty each on the weekend.
Decent. The cinnamon roll was average, wish it was warmed up. The fried chicken honey sandwich was not bad, but not remarkable in any way. The type of place you don't regret going, but won't go again. The shop is cute and the staff are nice.
Great and cute little shop! I just stopped in for a quick breakfast as it was one of my last days in DC before flying back to Dallas. I stopped in for a chicken sandwich and a drink. The sandwich came out fast, hot and crispy. I loved it and the sauce that came on it was delicious as well. The staff were very polite and cordial.

I've been going to Astro Donuts for about 10 years, and every time I'm in the area, I make a point to stop in. I always get the same thing: a fried chicken breast on a cheddar biscuit with honey butter and pickles. And yes, after all these years, it's still that good. When I worked in D.C., Astro Donuts was always a treat. I tried not to go too often because, well... that sandwich will catch up with you! But it's absolutely worth the occasional indulgence. The chicken breast is served warm on a cheddar biscuit, with that warm, melty honey butter soaking into the biscuit and pickles adding the perfect little tang. It is amazing. Add a little hot sauce, and you're set. It's truly a must-experience. The service was friendly, as always. They also offer bottled lemonade from a local business. I don't remember the name of the company, but it was perfectly tart and incredibly refreshing. The ambiance is casual. They offer outdoor seating, and there are also tables inside. I sat at an indoor table with bar stools and was able to relax and enjoy my food right away. I've also tried the donuts, and they do a good donut. My personal preference is for donuts that are really soft and squishy -- the kind you can squeeze and that practically melt in your mouth. That's my preference, so their donut texture isn't quite what I personally go for, but that's certainly not a knock on the donuts. Honestly, you can't go wrong with Astro Donuts. Get the fried chicken breast on the cheddar biscuit with the melty honey butter and pickles, add some hot sauce, grab a tart, refreshing lemonade, and enjoy. I always get the same thing, but one of these days I'm maybe finally going to try the chicken by itself. Because honestly, I don't know if I can not get that cheddar biscuit. I consider myself a donut aficionado, so this is 100% a must-visit when you're in DC. Don't quote me, but I think there are a couple locations around the city (plus a food truck) and they all run the same menu. I always go for the classic vanilla glazed donut, a chicken sandwich with a little kick of hot sauce, and an OJ from the fridge. It's filling without making you feel sluggish after. Solid spot if you're a food influencer and need another DC stop to add to the list. read more

This is an amazing fried chicken place! I don't usually like chicken sandwich but this is an exception. The flavour of the chicken is so good I cannot stop eating it, the crunch outside is perfect and juiciness inside is wonderful. Their buns are good too! To top it all, their doughnuts are delightful. Sweet but not kind of sweet that will give you a toothache. I love their cherry blossom and jelly doughnuts. Amazing! This is a quick in and out place if you are in hurry in DC. Came in for lunch & there was a small line. Food was delicious! I got the asteroid chicken sandwich with a cheddar biscuit on the side and it was great. Medium was the perfect spice for me and the chicken was fried amazingly. The biscuit was ok, I'd give points for not being dry. I didn't get a chance to try the donuts but will definitely be back to try more of the menu. read more

Overpriced heavy donuts and fried chicken without much flavor. The best part was the biscuit. We had to add the hot sauce for flavor. I can't believe I paid $5 per donut when they tasted like sweet breads with filling. Much too dense to be donuts and they weren't as soft and doughy as I thought they were going to be. Don't bother paying for the hyped square donuts and spend your money elsewhere. read more
Fried chicken and donuts - truly a winning combo. I've come here just to have a donut before, but I think the best strategy is to make this a lunch stop so you can experience both sides of what Astro has to offer. They had run out of chicken sandwiches by the time we showed up, so I got the chicken tenders instead. These are no grocery store chicken tenders! They are crispy and possess a considerable heft. The meat itself is tender and peels apart in an incredibly satisfying way. My donut of choice was the crème brûlée, which I highly recommend. It's a great marriage of two desserts, with the contrasting textures of fluffy donut, soft cream filling, and a crackling crust on top. All in all, a great meal in downtown DC. read more

OUTSTANDING!!!! OMG this is the level of food and dessert I want and hope to get in Washington DC. These are the most delicious donuts I've ever had across the USA!! We ordered online for delivery as we'd heard this place was great but its hard to get to when you're working all week. We ordered main meals and desserts and were super excited to try it (we've ordered twice since - thats how good it is). Everything that is lacking in some of the other places we've eaten and/or got food is delivered first class here. The quality, flavors, level of moisture, freshness - first class! This is my new favorite for burgers, chicken and donuts and its not near my home but when you get quality food with flavor, you'll pay extra to get it delivered or go there for it! I've lots of options closer to me (walking distance) that fail to deliver this level of excitement for me! We ordered The Asteroid Chicken Sliders to share - you get 3 mini chicken burgers that are babies to the big Asteroid Sandwich. They each come with spicy fried chicken, bibb lettuce, picles, jalapeno coleslaw, combeback sauce on a toasted brioche bun. We got a portion of tator tots to share and also a 2 piece White Chicken portion. We also ordered a range of donuts to share between us so that everyone got to try each of them. The level of flavor, freshness, lushness to both the hot food and the donuts was first rate. This place is worth of being on a Food Network trip to DC show!! Everything was delicious - the sliders are my new favorite, as is the white chicken breast - reminds me of Korean chicken restaurants where the outside is super crispy but the chicken is clean white breast meat,, juicy and hugely flavorsome! My favorite donut was the special Cherry Blossom version that was out during our first order. I also loved the traditional jam donut. The others we tried which were other peoples favorites included the Creme Brulee, Key Lime Pie, Chocolate Caramel Macchiato and the Raspberry Lemonade. I'd would order that Cherry Blossom donut every week if they kept it on the menu. It was delicious and picture perfect beautiful (sorry my photo had a bite already gone!! LOL. I recommend they make that one a regular on their menu. Its so symbolic of Washington DC and our famous Cherry Blossoms not to mention, it is DIVINE!!! I stopped into this location just after midday as it was on the list of best doughnuts in DC and I figured a little bit of fried chicken and beer also couldn't hurt to wash it down with and/or stimulate the palate in general. The bartender (and Arsenal fan) was a little [or quite] meh. The chicken biscuit was really good. I forgot that I had also visited the Astro location in Shirlington and I was kicking myself for not trying the food before. The tots were golden and totty. The beer selections were good. I tried two doughnuts (doing way too much in one visit). I recommend the chocolate goonie and the crème brûlée. Maybe don't try to force them all in one visit. Order a few doughnuts to walk around and snack on over a couple hours. I imagine that they're all pretty good especially if you're a fan of real dough based doughnuts and not just sugar that desolves in your mouth as soon as you bite into it. Have you ever eaten food at a restaurant that was so good, you gave up eating all other versions of it.? This happened to me @ Astro Donuts. In a way, I became a healthier person because of Astr's. No other donut can compare.... Krispy Kreams, Dunkins, and all other donuts in the DMV are simply missing the "IT FACTOR." These donuts are perfectly fried and have a light, airy, chewy texture I can't find in the state of MD. Donuts: I LOVE THE KEY LIME PIE DONUT. It's a shame this specialty donut is only available in the spring.... But when I see a key lime donut pop up on my Instagram, I immediately start planning a day in DC just to stop by. Why I love Astro's: These yeast donuts have the perfect texture. The filled donuts have plenty of filling to enjoy with every bite. Plus the donuts are huge, you can easily share them with a friend. I also recommend the original glazed, maple bacon, and cream brûlée flavors. They also have fried chicken! If you are ready for all of the calories you can order the donut and chicken sandwich. It's delicious! If I had to choose one, go for the donuts! Service: Astro's is always busy on the weekends. You can order online or pick up your goodies to skip the line. While the staff here is very nice, the food was extremely underwhelming. Both mine and my husbands chickens were very dry and bland. The bread was extremely flimsy as well. Also, it was basically just a chicken strip so the bread to chicken ratio really sucked. There menu is also kind of a bit confusing I'm not describing how one can order a chicken sandwich with what donuts, so we were charged extra. There is ample seating at the bar next door(owned by the same people I believe). When we say there we got weird stares though. The parking here is nonexistent (not factored into my review, but I like to add it for people). The two stars are really because the cashier was nice, because it an overall weird and disappointing experience. read more

The Chicken Biscuit was good. The biscuit itself was really and the chicken. I would have chosen a different type of cheese and I couldn't taste the honey on it. The donuts were not worth the money in my opinion. I wasn't wow'd by it, which is what I was expecting...but none of my family thoroughly enjoyed the donuts. Such a disappointment. I decided to try these out after hearing about them for a while and let's just say I will not be returning. I went around 12:30pm and ordered 2 doughnuts, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and regular vanilla glazed. The doughnuts are rather large which makes the $4.50 price point bearable, and they are not too sweet as other doughnuts, which I liked. However, these have got to be the driest doughnuts that I've had! You would definitely need some coffee to enjoy these. So disappointing. Ive had better from 7 Eleven. Also, the location in Penn Quarter is quite small, only about 5-6 people can be in the store comfortably at once. read more

CRÈME BRÛLÉE DONUT!! The place is small so if you don't want to sit at the few tables outside you'll have to take it to go. I tried the Fried Chicken Honey Sandwich and a Crème Brûlée donut. The sandwich was nothing out of the ordinary. The Donut on the other hand was the best crème brûlée donut I've ever had. The filling was runny but the taste was similar to actual crème brûlée. Be warned it's a messy donut. Overall, the crème brûlée donut is a must. read more

I scheduled pickup order through their website. Super easy and great to see they update the doughnuts based on what's available. What we ordered: Hot honey chicken sandwich - Pros: we didn't try one but the people around us said they loved these donuts - a lot of unique and classic flavors to try. Plenty of outdoor seating available. Cons: chicken breast was a little dry. Also, there was a group of 10ish people filming what seemed to be food reviews for their social media pages and were blocking the entrance and walkway for 10 minutes. It's such a tiny shop and having to wait for people to film themselves eating three sandwiches and four donuts was a bit frustrating. However, they were all giving thumbs up and big head nods to their cameras/phones so it seems like this place gets great reviews and we just choose the wrong thing! read more
A true Local DC spot! This is the kind of doughnut place I take people who visit DC to! It's whimsical, fun and nostalgic. Yes the shop is small and it can get busy on the weekend morning but you can order ahead and skip the line, or choose to wait but it moves quickly. My favorite flavors are Keylime and peanut butter & jelly. I swear the peanut butter and jelly flavor taste like childhood. It just brings back a wave of good emotions. Do not forget to try the main attraction the chicken in Doughnut sandwich! You choose your bun and in my opinion, the Old Bay Doughnut is the best option. Great place to grab a dozen doughnuts, a fun novelty lunch pit stop, and an excellent place to take DC visitors! read more
FOOD We ordered the chicken BLT, asteroid chicken sandwich, summer berry donut, and s'mores donut-- all of which were underwhelming. The chicken sandwiches were quite dry (both buns and chicken) and the sauce was lacking in amount and taste. The doughnuts were too cakey and dry for liking. They didn't taste like donuts at all, and the texture was lacking too. SERVICE Service was standard; nothing of note. AMBIANCE We sat down at the food hall. It was spacious and a great spot to get together. The inside is a little dim, but otherwise, nothing of note. read more
Update! Tried the fried chicken (and got more donuts). Chicken had SO much flavor! Wow, these donuts! We stopped by on a Saturday as we had a nearby appointment. My favorite was tiramisu! Also hat tip to crème brûlée and PB&J. The cake donuts were a bit too heavy for me, but I prefer regular yeast donuts anyway so it's nothing personal. Pro tip: Don't get too excited and say one of everything if you don't have a crowd to help you eat them! Will be back for the fried chicken. read more
