I love rotisserie/roasted chicken so much because it is the world's food. It is the same basic chicken, with all different cultures and regions of the world bringing their own unique twist to it. The Peruvians prepare it drastically different than the Chinese who prepare it drastically different than the French, and so on. It's beautiful if you really think about it. All this to say I was beyond excited when Athenian Room, a no frills cash only Greek restaurant, was the most recommended rotisserie chicken spot in Chicago. I couldn't even remember the last time I had a bird from a Greek spot, so I was ready to see what the Greeks had to bring to Chicken Wars. I walked into the dimly lit tavern-like ambiance and sheepishly asked "Table for 1..?" I got seated at a 4 top which I felt terrible about, but told the server I'd be quick. I ordered their iconic Chicken Kalamata ($16) - which is a boiled and grilled crisp-skinned half chicken over an ample amount of thick cut Greek fries drenched in olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, and lemon. I was slightly perturbed as I awaited my chicken, as this place was so mellow and calm that I knew filming myself dogging this chicken with my ring light would bring way too much attention. This is by FAR my least favorite part of the job. I'm a people pleaser by nature and I just know everyone in the restaurant hates me, which is totally fair and valid. I opted to not touch the bright ring light, and just use the flash on my phone. I didn't even want to do that, but the quality of the video is just 10x better with some sort of light. I wish I could just write and never have to film myself, but you gotta play the game to change the game. The Chicken Kalamata came, it looked like what I imagine a chicken would look like if that's what they gave you upon arrival into heaven. A tight, crispy, golden brown skin with visible seasoning over a bed of thick cut fries. Does it get any better? When you rip it apart, you can literally hear the crunch of the skin as it breaks and steam escapes into the atmosphere. I've never seen anything like it. It genuinely makes me wonder if it is flash fried or something. This turned out to be some of the best chicken skin, flavor, and dark meat I've had, but in a tale as old as time, the breast was pretty dry. Dipping it in the olive oil at the bottom of the plate solved that, but I always judge a bird without sauce or additions. It's still easily worth the $16 I paid and I'd recommend this to anyone when in Chicago, but a truly elite bird needs to have a tender breast. Fries were touched by Zeus though. Thick cut with a crispy exterior and a fluffy interior... some of the best fries I've had this year. As I was wrapping up, the sweet server came over and said "Are you like a food influencer or something!?" I looked down and shook my head in embarrassment, and gave her the spiel. The word "influencer" or "content creator" gives me the ick, even though it is exactly what I'm doing. It just sounds so self serving and yucky. I do truly enjoy writing, telling stories, editing videos, and highlighting good businesses. Anyways, shoutout to the Athenian Room. SOLID bird here, but even better vibes. Old school Greek restaurant located in the heart of Lincoln Park on Webster. Definitely an old school vibe, and is cash only which figures. Limited menu to just the basics, but what they have is good. It's basically just gyros, chicken and pork kabobs, or chicken served whole, burgers, and a few other items. I got the gyro dinner, the meat was very good and juicy, and a good portion. There's not a whole lot of seating in the dining room, maybe not ideal for huge groups, though my group had 7, and were able to get seated for lunch but we got there right at 12. It's attached to a bar and they share a bathroom with them just FYI. Glad I got to check it out, my sister lives nearby and she'd recommended it for her husband's birthday. There's some street parking available, but they also do valet. Or the Fullerton L stop isn't far from it.

There's a reason why the half chicken dish is Tina Fey's fave. It's this Tina's fave now as well! The chicken came out perfectly crisp and tender. The oils n herbs it comes with is so flavorful - the fries soak up the juices very very nicely. I can't get over how good of a deal this is for $16 as well! You not only get a half chicken and fries but also a Greek salad and a baguette! The salad was very fresh (get the feta & an order of olives!) and the baguette was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Def enough food for 2 meals. This is unheard of for metro Chicago! The ambiance is warm & intimate - perfect for a date. Service was prompt as well. We were quoted a 20-min wait but probably only waited maybe 10 mins.

Found this gem on a whim. We parked nearby to eat somewhere else, but the smells coming from this building lured us in. We were able to a get a quaint table. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and this place made it fun. They sent over a bartender from the adjoining restaurant. We were able to order cocktails from them. Prices were reasonable and my Pinot Gris paired nice with my meal. For appetizers we got the Taramosalata. This referred to as Greek caviar. It definitely is not what we were expecting but we enjoyed it thoroughly. The Taramasalata is a creamy, salty Greek fish roe dip or spread with a whipped bread base. We ate this was a soft warm pita. For entrees, I got the chicken kabobs and my hubby for the gyro plate. Both came with pita, tzatziki and Greek fries. Greek fries were authentic and not traditional American version. We enjoyed our food. I would say the only downside was there was some juice soaking my plate so it made my pita soggy. We were able to take some leftovers home and we enjoyed some complimentary baklava. Overall this was a very tasty birthday dinner. The service here was friendly and not pretentious. We had nice night and would come back again to dine. Tip: cash only and get the Greek caviar.

Athenian Room is great! But not if you're gluten free. The gluten free options were some of the meats and the salad. No potatoes, rice, GF bread, etc. However, the food is very tasty, the service is quick, and it is reasonably priced! A true Lincoln Park gem.

I've been to this restaurant twice. Once in April and once in May. These were two different experiences. I got the Gyro plate both times , so I believe that I can make a good comparison. In April, portions of the gyro plate were large. It was cooked to perfection, and the fries were amazing. Service was fast and very attentive. My second time visiting, which was in the month of May was a little different. The Gyro portion was about 3/4 of what it was the last time I visited the restaurant. The portion of the fries was a lot less and they seem to have been drowning in a Greek sauce that tasted like Italian dressing. Service was a little slower this time, and they seem to be just as busy as they were during our previous visit. Because of how good the food was during my first visit, I will try this restaurant one more time. But because of the differences in quality, I can only give it three stars.

Cash only Greek spot serving up large portions quickly. My friend who lives in the area said this was one of her favorite restaurants in the city and told us how Tina Fey apparently raves about this spot, so we were excited to give it a try. Menu had a lot of the staples you'd expect to see at a Greek/Mediterranean restaurant, but felt a little limited compared to others I've been to. My boyfriend and I ordered the Gyros plate and Chicken Kalamata style to share and it was more than enough food. We ended up sending our leftovers home with a friend who was able to make a whole extra meal out of it. We probably could've gotten away with sharing one entree if we got an appetizer. Surprisingly the gyro was my favorite of the two. I typically lean chicken, and did enjoy this dish, but the gyro had a bit more flavor. The place was super crowded on a Tuesday evening, the outside seating was full and only a handful of table were left inside. Compared to a lot of other Greek restaurants I've been to it wasn't too expensive, which was great since it is cash only.

The plan was to celebrate my birthday with my bestie. The food is simply outstanding. It reminded me of my trip to Greece. It reminded her of her recent trip as well. The food is authentic and prepared fresh. My charburger with a slab of feta was perfectly cooked. I savored every bite. The homemade tzatziki was creamy and refreshing. My friend loved her gyro plate. I can't wait to go back! The charburger is a favorite of mine! We were told that the next table would be available in 55 minutes but I received a call after ten minutes saying that our table was ready! Honestly that meal would be worth a 55 minute wait!! Oh rats, the legendary Kalamata Chicken was high on my bucket list to try for years. Tina Fey gave it a certain cachet by naming it her favorite meal in Chicago, and David Letterman seemed to concur when he interviewed blues legend Buddy Guy over the same dish. I convinced Jamie W. to hop on the Red Line to Lincoln Park to have our first Windy City dinner. It was raining the night we went, and predictably there was a 45-minute wait for a table in their old-style dining room. We waited across the street nursing lattes at Starbucks and pleasantly got called after just a half-hour. We looked at the menu for about a minute and both ordered the $15.50 Chicken Kalamata Style Dinner which started with the Tossed Salad. It was already mixed in oil & vinegar, and I requested the $4 side of Feta Cheese to turn it into a Greek salad (photo: https://yelp.to/B84laSoDxJ). Our chicken plates arrived, and they were doozies - a full half-chicken broiled and grilled on top of a bed of Greek fries in a pool of their own au jus (photo: https://yelp.to/36q70Fr7Tr). Here's my verdict: The crispy skin was awesome, and the dark meat was juicy. The white meat was a bit dried out but still quite edible. The fries were holding up well from the au jus and chicken juice. The spoiler was the au jus. It consisted of olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, and lemon, and the resulting flavor was just too puckery sour to enjoy. Damn. Loved Athenian Room!!!! Pretty causal on the inside & super affordable food that did not disappoint! It's a cash only place, but they do have an atm at the bar next door. They don't take reservations, but our wait was only about 30 minutes, which was shorter than they originally told us. I loved everything we got, but the pita bread and tzatziki were my favorite. Both of them tasted homemade and sooo fresh. The greek fries had a strong lemon flavor and were generally seasoned. The greek salad was great too & came with a huge block of feta and giant tomatoes & cucumbers. Highly recommend Athenian Room!!!!

Food was great. The steak and fries were amazing. No condiments needed. The salad is just a salad. Not a big salad guy. The food came out very quick. My buddies and I were super hungry. You have to come a lot earlier to get any seating. We waited for 1hr and 35 minutes to get a table. My only critique is there is an opportunity to get a virtual waitlist so customers know where they are in the line. Managing expectations is important because we were told it would be a 1 hr wait.

The food here is absolutely delicious! The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy inside-perfect!!! The gyro meat has so much flavor, the spices everything about was pleasurable!! Salad was good and the bread was so soft! Can't wait to go back!

Is there ever a bad greek place? I mean all their dishes are solid although ironically I think their worst dish is the gyros because the meat was dry on this day. The chicken, lamb, and all the other pitas were outstanding. The gyros are good but this batch wasnt great, and I will give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it was just an overcooked day. read more

Well, Tina Fey was right. Go to the Athenian Room. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Order the Athenian chicken dinner Kalamata style. (Gyro dinner is good, too. Pass on the shrimp Kalamata style unless you're looking for six fried shrimps with fries.) read more

Coming from San Francisco, I totally appreciate a place like this where you can actually get a full dinner plate meal for $ 12-: the Kalamata Chicken is delicious, nice moist chicken with side of potatoes and bread ( but do not expect olives). When Tina Fey lived here this was supposed to be her go to dish. The Gyro salad $ 10.50,is simple but good with the feta cheese, tzaziki. Plenty of food . Go to the bar next door to buy your alcoholic drinks and bring them back to your table. Nice outdoor seating on warm summer nights. They say the menu has not change in 30 years, I wish we had something like this in my neighborhood. read more

Solid Greek food. The service is very fast-paced and it kind of seems like they're rushing you out a bit. They reach over you to take your dishes and it's all done very sloppily. You get complimentary bread with butter which is honestly nothing special and seems unnecessary. We got the spanakopita (came out super fast) which had a flaky crust but didn't have as much flavor as we would've liked. We also ordered the gyro sandwich which came with very few tomato slices but a good amount of meat. The meat, however, was a little bit on the drier side. The pita was perfectly chewy and warm. The last dish we got was the steak, Alexandros style. It comes with fries and was absolutely delicious and tender. The juice it's in is incredible and adds great flavor dimension to the dish. Overall. The last dish saved the day. Probably won't return for the gyro or spanakopita though. read more

God i love greek food. I loved this little lincoln park greek place despite the deep fried shrimp i ordered. Had the greek salad with delicious fetal, side of kalamata olives, greek fries and the shrimp. Wouldnt recommend the shrimp or the dipping sause at all but the outdoor seating and everything else was excellent. I must of ordered the one thing that bad on the menu. however I did try my wife's Greek chicken entree with garlic sauce and fries and it was absolutely Delish. So come here and stick to the traditional dishes. They are yummy. And try the outdoor deck. It's heaven on a beautiful night but you'll have to be patient with the svc outside (really slow). read more

Writing this review after 4 or 5 visits, I am sure the Athenian Room is consistently good. I really enjoy the gyro. They also have great Greek fries. Parking in Lincoln Park is always tough and Athenian Room offers valet parking for about the same price as feeding the meter. Good Greek food at fair prices. Always a winner here ! read more

This place is Amazing;) Came here twice with my Cousin and both times we were very pleased with our meals. This time I ordered the Kalamata Chicken & my Cousin ordered the Signature Steak dinner. Both come with a SUPER Delicious lemon herb sauce and Greek Fries Oh My We totally recommend trying either Signature plates and you won't be disappointed ;) read more

It's a shame that I haven't said anything about this place yet. I've been to Chicago a lot I don't live far away about a 2 1/2 drive but .. I've never took a trip to Chicago without going to Athenian Room it's Greek style and amazing culture has outdone itself with they're amazing tasting food. It's been about 2months since I've visited Athenian Room and that's very sad to say because I can basically live on this stuff. I order two things on they're menu which is - The Wine Steak / Skirt Steak : This plate absolutely outstanding the Steak is so tender and the juice from the wine sauce makes it almost addicting lol . As it is also served with Greek style potatoes soaked in the wine sauce .. As you can see in the photo it's Is as good as it looks . Also the Fetta Burger : cooked perfectly medium rare for me every time bun is fresh and soft, I , myself use the wine steak sauce add it to the burger ... amazing . I highly recommend. read more

Have been a patron of the Athenian Room after growing up in he neighborhood as a kid. Learned quickly that a menu is not required as the Chicken Kalamata is the only dish you should order. Any thoroughbred Chicagoan will know this is top choice for Greek that doesn't force you to go into Greektown. read more

Ooft. This place was silly. Food was okay enough. We asked for a drink menu but they DO NOT SERVE ALCOHOL. We ordered a Greek Salad and Gyros. Per the suggestion of our waitress I went to a bar next door to get our drinks. There was 1 guy working a 30 foot bar and the place was packed. It was like being back in college. I was reaching over the sticky bar to try and get this guys attention just so I could get a drink with dinner. Enough was enough, I pushed my way back through the bar (without our drinks) to rejoin my lovely girlfriend. Salad, meh. Gyro was decent, nothing special. The POTATOES were actually fantastic and the only thing keeping this from a negative review. Service is below standard, food is average. I'll go somewhere else next time. read more

Athenian Room is one of my favorite restaurants in the country, and a must-do every time I am in Chicago. This cozy spot near DePaul is a family-friendly, neighborhood spot but with some of the best, simple Greek fare I have ever had. We usually like to come and sit on their romantic street side patio, but this time we visited in the winter and sat in their dark, cavernous dining room decorated with kitschy Greek paintings and other tchotchkes, making it feel as if you are almost in someone's '70's era living room. Note that this restaurant doesn't serve alcohol, but they encourage diners to go next door to the Irish pub that is connected by an interior door, to order drinks to bring back into the restaurant. I have bought bottles of Greek wine on other visits, but this time we ordered a couple of glasses, red for me and white for her. For food, the souvlaki and roasted chicken here are the thing, but the salads are just as perfect for vegetarians like us. She ordered the classic Greek salad, and I ordered the villagers salad, their take on a horiatiki. Both are comprised of fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, topped with a sour and salty vinaigrette and a huge slab of the freshest feta in town. We also shared an order of their Greek fries, served warm and slathered in their homemade Greek dressing. I also had a side of their rich tzatziki to dip my vegetables into, and pita. She ordered their cheese pita, a funny and retro, but admittedly delicious, side dish of pita topped with melted American cheese. Athenian Room is a family-owned Chicago institution and a perfect spot for old-fashioned Greek food served in an endlessly comforting environment that makes you feel like you are part of the family. This place is worth the wait, without a doubt. My family was in town and they love Mediterranean cuisine. I had heard this was the place to go and it did not disappoint. We went on a Saturday evening around 6:00 and had to wait a little over one hour. The hostess was so sweet and let us go to Starbucks instead of the bar while we waited. We were seated within the expected time frame which is so impressive for how busy they were. Everyone loved what they ordered. Three of us had some form of chicken shish kabob, one had the steak, and one had something pork-related. Overall, loved it, can't wait to go back! read more

Average Greek food at best. From my experience Athenian Room did not live up to the hype. Gyros were a little dry, almost tasted flour-y or like they were made from plant protein. Getting a table is tough because they don't accept reservations or call ahead, and the host staff is not very friendly. Wait staff was great but they turn tables as fast as possible (their menu says you must limit your stay to one hour and this is not a covid precaution) so it felt like we were constantly being watched and almost rushed along. The place itself had a great atmosphere/vibes - dimly lit, very open and communal, open kitchen right in the front of the restaurant - and food came out quickly and portion sizes were decent, but they do nickel and dime you for anything/everything extra: cheese, tzatziki, pita bread - so be prepared to spend more than just the base-entree price. So many restaurants around, probably wouldn't go back nor would I recommend. Save yourself a 30 minute wait and go to a number of other nearby Lincoln Park mainstays. read more

The Kalamata Chicken dinner is the most amazing thing I've ever eaten. Served over a bed of thick cut vinegar fries, I've tried to recreate this recipe on my own and have failed to recreate it. The atmosphere is family friendly and can be busy during the weekends. Still, this dish is worth the wait! read more

Top 5 Restaurant of All Time! The best Chicken Kalamata Style anywhere. Marinates over night before grilling and is oh so juicy. Never dry. Gyro Plate is amazing too. You can grab a drink at Glascott's next door. Pricing is reasonable and the servers are very friendly. Cash only. Outdoor dining in the summer too! You won't be disappointed! read more

Thanks for having OTF Wrigleyville out for a business lunch today! Our owner had tried this place out before and absolutely loved it. The gyro was really big.. I couldn't imagine out big the king size gyro was. Our server was quick and nice. She wasnt in our face, but was very accomidating at the same time. Our food came out quick and was delicious. Can't wait to open up our Lincoln Park location so I can make this place my go to lunch! read more

We order from here all the time...Consistently amazing and delicious. The Kalamata Chicken and Steak Alexandros are my go-to meals. I literally dream about the food on a weekly basis...please never change Athenian Room! The sauce on the fries??? Unreal. It's cash only right now in the pandemic but the price you pay for the amount of food is amazing. The chicken is the best deal in town. Best. Restaurant. Ever. read more

DEFINATELY worth the cheat day if you're dieting. My absolute favorite is the Taramosalata (greek Caviar) for an appetizer followed by Skirt Steak Alexandros Style (pictured). I'm not sure how they make their iced tea (has a light cinnamon flavor) but it's delicious and like no other. The staff is friendly too. This Greek restaurant is up there for my tops in Chicago. Authentic, delicious food and very cozy. The skirt steak is the best and not too expensive. Comes with steak fries and the marinade is so good I asked how they make it. French bread and pita bread freshly made- taramasalata appetizer, traditional salads that come w the dinner. Feta cheese and olives on the side. Owners are so nice. If there's a wait, you can hang and get a drink at the bar next door. read more

My wife and I went here for dinner on a visit to Chicago. She had heard it recommended by Tina Fey and it did not disappoint. She got the kalamata chicken dish, which is half a chicken on fries and the fries soak in the amazing juices. I got the same thing but with the skirt steak. Both were amazing. And came with a brick of feta cheese too :) It's so affordable for an amazing meal. We will be going back next time we're in town. Make this a stop! read more

Can't go wrong at Athenian room, and I pity anyone who hasn't had tried this place yet. It is a staple in Lincoln Park/DePaul area. It is great for a casual night with 1 or a few friends, but also nice enough to bring the family or a group in celebration. Quick details: -Simple menu & you get a lot of food for what you pay for! Most entrees come with extras like pita bread & tzatziki, side salads, feta cheese, and/or fries. -No bar, but they are attached to Glascott's saloon, where you can get a drink if there is a wait list, or you can order a round and bring it to your table in Athenian. -Outdoor seating in the summer is soo nice. -Quick service, food comes out fast and warm, dishes arrive as they are ready. Favorite dishes: -Gyro Dinner- comes with aforementioned "extras" and I usually have leftovers. -Gyro salad- basically the same as gyro dinner (because it comes with pita) but more veg! -Kalamata Chicken- comes with steak fries soaked in jous. YUMMM -Side of Feta cheese- classic -Spanakopita appetizer- a must! Pro tip: there is usually a Groupon for Glascott's for drinks. This has been our favorite restaurant for over twenty years. We feel at home every time we eat there - the service and food are great - and we always leave the restaurant in a better mood. I came here for lunch, sat out side do to covid the inside dinner was closed. I been coming here for years. Always had a good experience only complaint was a older lady in the pass but she had been fired do to all the complaints. How ever out side dining was convenient they had out side heaters that kept us warm. And the service was excellent. Food was great like always. I left the waitress a good tip she was very nice and provide us with everything we asked for. I am giving 4-stars for pass not so good experience. But yesterday was all around great service. read more

I've been to the Athenian Room a couple of times now ( I knew this is a place I'd have to go back to). It's a casual and fast paced restaurant with the owners there every time I've gone. If you go during rush hour, expect to have to wait to sit down in the restaurant area (because they will sometimes offer you a seat at the pub next door). Great prices. The gyro sandwich, skirt steak, and chicken kabob sandwich are my faves! The dishes come bathed in this delicious lemon oil sauce! Also, make sure you order some greek fries and some feta cheese on the side to sprinkle on your greek fries and on your dish. read more

The best causal Greek spot in LP! I had the Greek salad with a chicken kebab & my friend had the gyro... amazing! I did order the Greek fries on the side not knowing exactly what it was & seemed like it was just seasoned fries in olive oil & lemon juice... will stick to the normal fries next time! They don't serve drinks but you can go to the bar next door, order drinks & bring them back to your table! read more

I can't recommend this place. The food is, at best, adequate. Not quite as good as most greasy, corner gyro joint. All the meat was dry, and the pita, while not stale, was cold and unimpressive. I'm not sure what folks are referencing when they talk about this place having "authentic" Greek food? read more

Skirt steaks and chicken are the reasons to go here but don't go toward closing time. They wouldn't provide salad dressing because "it was too late". They turned off all the lights. They were sweeping the floor right where we were eating and were rude when asked to wait a few minutes. The best part...cash only! They have not paid their fair share taxes for 50 years! Shocked at the customer service here. I have a gluten allergy so called to confirm the Kalamata chicken was safe to order. She responded, "I don't know, you have a gluten allergy, I'm normal. It's CHICKEN. I don't know." I asked politely if there was anyone who could help me answer the question and she continued to be extremely unhelpful. Would rather take my business elsewhere. Not "gluten-friendly." For those with gluten allergies, Zizi's Cafe and Dawali Mediterranean Kitchen are extremely helpful and have extensive gluten-free options. read more

I was so excited to find this restaurant through yelp. Drill sergeant hostess amused us but we appreciated the efficiency. We were seated quickly after getting drinks next door and that's where our experience went south. My date ordered the shirt steak medium rare. It was very well done and the waitress never came back to check on us. Never. My shrimp was overdone as well and fries were mushy from their special "juice". Needless to say, we left hungry and frustrated. Won't be back to this one. read more

They had a lot of seating available and we got a nice table by the window with a view We wanted to eat light before the tour so we shared a bunch of small plates. We ordered the mushroom escargot, lemon Caesar, crispy potatoes, a couple orders of hummus and some chicken kebabs. That mushroom escargot was one of my favorite things I ate during the entire Chicago trip. The mushrooms were creamy and rich. It tasted umami, bright from the lemon, slightly spicy from the Calabrian breadcrumbs, and paired perfectly with some warm pita bread on the side. The hummus was smooth and well seasoned. The lemon caesar was fresh and fairly standard. The crispy potatoes were perfectly textured and were soft and pillowy on the inside. As long as they sat on the table they never lost their crisp. The chicken kebabs were tenderly, juicy and garlicky. We were all putting together our perfect bite combinations with the pita bread. Everything we ordered I would actually order again. Though may want to try a different salad next time since the Caesar was pretty simple. Regardless, still no real complaints with the food Our server was charismatic and funny. He had a great attitude and entertained us throughout the meal. Everything came out promptly as well so we made it out and could take our time walking to the riverboats. Lucky for our friends the tour said they'd be docked for a few minutes after our scheduled start time to set everything up. As 3 minutes after our start time we see group 2 sprinting up from a couple blocks away Overall Ema was consistent, flavorful and reliable. Not a bad price point either for what you get. The staff were all welcoming with smiles on their faces and attentiveness. Prices were fair for the amount of food you receive. Food portions are colossal so I would recommend one appetizer and one entree if you are a couple. They give you a complimentary dish. We ordered arayes with meat, meat toshka, mixed grill with baba ghanouj, fillet of basa fried, and mint lemonade. They also offer you fresh Arabic coffee before you leave. This is about a 4.5-5. -arayes with meat 4 - this was not bad. It's like a tamer version of the meat toshka. -meat toshka 5 - I prefer this over the arayes because they add the Syrian cheese. This one was bursting with flavor the moment you took a bite out of it. The minced beef and lamb just melt in the mouth. -mixed grill 5 - this came with 3 big skewers (shish kabab, kufta kabab, and chicken tawook. It also has tomatoes and onions to help cut down the meat when digesting. There are two heaping portions of biryani and saffron rice and baba ghanouj. The baba ghanouj was creamy and flavorful. It goes well with the pita bread. The meats were cooked medium well unless you want something. I think next time I'll ask for the shish kababs to be cooked medium rare or medium for a more juicy taste. The chicken tawook and kufta were both succulent. -fillet of basa fried 5 - the two pieces of basa fillet were astronomical. It also comes with two different kinds of rice. The fish was flaky, moist, and seasoned. Make sure you add the lemon and eat it with the sauce. -mint lemonade 5 - this was very refreshing after eating a heavy meal.

Every single part of the meal was outstanding. The pulled pork was delicious on its own, but I also loved the sweet barbecue sauce. The cornbread was, without exaggeration, the best I've ever had!! It was moist, flavorful, and served with absolutely incredible butter. The mac and cheese was rich, creamy, and one of the best I've ever had as well. Even the sweet tea was perfect: actually sweet without being overpowering or having that bitter, earthy aftertaste that some sweet teas have. I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I came back the next night and tried the brisket. It was sooooo good too. It was tender, smoky, juicy, and packed with flavor. At that point I knew the first meal wasn't a fluke. It's not inexpensive, but the portions are generous, and I felt the quality more than justified the price. My experience at Athenian Room was pleasant. My girlfriend and I went there on a Saturday night at 8 pm and were both happy and displeased to see a full dining room with a line waiting to be seated. We were seated after about 20 minutes of waiting, during which time we were able to go into Glascotts for a drink. The hostess will find you either in the restaurant or in the adjacent bar. When we were seated, we promptly received our drinks and were soon adressed by a waitress. And here is where my review turns from 5 to 4 stars. She hovered over our table just staring at us; expecting us to say "Oh yeah, we would like ____". After about 10 seconds of staring, she says "Would you like anything?" in an almost snotty rude way. She didn't ask us if we would like an appetizer, or a soft drink or anything along those lines. Granted, it was a busy saturday night, and I am sure she had a lot of customers to deal with. We ordered our meals (we both tried the Gyro dinner) and were happy to see it arrive in just under 5 minutes. The gyro meat is already made and constantly on a rotisserie, so it is a fast meal for the restaurant to serve up. I imagine if I had come at a different time when it was less busy, I would have had much better service. But the bus boy (or whatever the man's title was) always made sure our water was refilled. So the service was average, on a busy night. I recommend Athenian Room to anyone in the Lincoln Park area looking for a meal under $15 dollars per person. read more

You definitely get what you pay for at this place. It's got a cozy feel to it. Everyone is friendly and the service is fast. I got the Chicken Kalamata that was a huge 1/2 chicken in a a great sauce laying on a bed of fries. I also got the Taramosalata which rocked with some pita bead. The minute after I ordred, I had the salad that came with the chicken in front of me (I love that, especially when I'm hungry) My friend had the Gyros and he really liked. He said that it was definitely better than your average fast food place, but not the best he's ever had. I'll definitely be going back, it's the perfect spot when you can't think of where you want to go and you don't want to spend $40 on yourself for dinner and still enjoy a great meal! read more

The worst food ever. Extremely salty gyros and the fries were not fresh. This was a carry-out, so I called the restaurant and spoke with the 'manager'. She had initially taken my order and was the cashier for my bill. I explained that I was just there ordering the food. I said that the food was so salty that my blood pressure spiked, and that I'd like to return the food. (this was about 2 months ago). The manager said that it was alright, the she was 'sorry about the food' and that she would return my money (credit my card). Never happened. From that stand-point alone: what a Rip-off company. read more

Wish their menu was a little more extensive and explained some of the items but my go to is a greek salad with chicken or just a regular gyro.literally.we ordered food from here while sitting at the bar next door.came here late night on friday for a late dinner.the portion is huge but the meat isn't very flavorful; in my opinion.i recommend ar for its comfort food..lemon chicken is also a winner and the villager salad can't be beat.both of our fries were drowning in juice under our sandwiches; although they were good.ar only does a few things; but they do them well. read more

I had wanted to try this place for the last 12 or 13 years ever since moving to Chicago I was especially interested in trying their burger anyways today driving by I decided To put the brake on and go in I wanted to order the burger the server recommended the gyros I ordered that it was OK nothing to write home about but I think I need to give this place one or two more chances for the burger and the chicken before really making up my mind great service I loved the way my server kept on saying Perrier I me up to pronounce it that way myself from now on read more

I adore Greek food. It's one of my favorite things to eat, probably because I have the ridiculous ability that allows me to forget how great it is until I try it again. I finally made it over to the Athenian Room after getting out of work earlier than normal, and took a seat outside. Bad move. Turns out, Chicago is pretty windy. Anyway, I moved inside, and they had no problem with that. The service was okay; nothing special, but not bad. I must say, I really enjoyed my skirt steak (Alexandros Style), and will definitely coming back for that. read more

Amazing food with an amazing atmosphere. Even the interior design is up to par with the Greek roots they capture. Service is great and the food is better. I usually have the Gyro, which is always great. But recently I had the skirt steak and that also didn't fail to impress. Extremely juicy and extremely good. I'm also in love with their fries, the type of fries that are so good you forget you have been shoving them down your throat the last few minutes. Love this place! read more

I just have to share my excitement about Athenian Room! My family and I have been loyal customers for 20 years, and we've introduced countless friends to this gem. We've never had a bad experience here! The food is served lightning-fast and always tastes absolutely incredible. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. This is one place that I never get sick of eating at. I either dine in or carryout at least once a week. The skirt steak is one of the most underrated dishes in the city, the gyros are delicous and the chicken is always perfect...I dare you to find something on the menu that's not great. The prices are right and their service is fast. They don't serve alcohol but you can order your drink next door at Glascott's or bring your food into the bar. read more

Been coming here for years love the food. One of my favorite. Also all of my family is a fan to this restaurant. I give this restaurant 5 stars because of the food. And the owner is very nice guy the older gentleman. But the older lady is very mean. My friend was there a few months back and found a roach walking in the walls. When I head that my heart was broken. Never went back since. But eventually I will go back. Because I miss the food. read more

Everything is good here. The skirt steak is my favorite. I also love the feta burger, with pita, much better than with bread. Carry out is perfect, like this other review it is faster than drive thru as in 10 minutes you can pick up anything and it is ready waiting for you. Very reasonably priced. Everyone there, and I mean EVERYONE is so friendly and helpful and attentive. I will keep going there, such a great casual spot!! read more

Seriously, french fries on top of a salad? Dare I say genius? You can order the salad, feel like you are being resonably healthy and then (just because you are) indulge in these wonderful greek fries that just happen to be lying around on top of your greens. Whom ever thought this one up goes down as a God in my book! Can't tell you about the rest of the food, I can't get past the salad. read more

One of the best meals/service I've ever had. Inexpensive but top notch quality. The gyro is mouthwatering and the skirt streaked on splashed with special Greek seasonings that will leave you longing for more. Sat outside Atmosphere was amazing we ordered the Greek salad skirt steak with a wine and the chicken with the wine sauce with the potatoes and they were both delicious hands down best Greek food in Chicago. Best Skirt Steak in Chicago for an incredible under $20 price. Service is excellent. A family run business for over 30 years. This place has the best athenian steak and fries here in the athenian sauce is amazing. Tip if you order the feta burger have them spill the athenian sauce on top of its amazing. I heart this place. I always get carry out, and it's as fast as going through a drive-thru! While I only go back and forth between two dishes - the Greek salad with chicken shish kabob and the chicken shish kabob dinner - it just never gets old. I can always count on a good meal here! read more

BEST F******* SKIRT STEAK & FRIES. Ive been eating here since I was a kid now that I moved away, I sure do miss it. The steak has the best grilled flavor and seasoning on the fries. There is nothing like this in Vegas. They could sure use a joint like this!! YOU GUYS ROCK!!! read more
