Probably one of the worst "fine dining" experiences I've ever had. The wait staff is incredibly rude, and two servers were staring at my table the entire night to the point where it was uncomfortable. It was clear they were talking about me and even pointed at us. The Arctic char was too thick, tasteless, and drowned out by the flavor of the sauce. Possibly the best breakfast/lunch in town. I see people complaining about high prices and completely agree that the place is expensive but to me it is worth it. Why is the chilaquiles $17 and does not come with a poached egg? I added mushroom which made it $25 without eggs. But the flavor is amazing and the layers go deep. Also ordered the fish a la talla, sea bass aguachile, and huevos rancheros. All were fantastic and wonderfully strange to my unfamiliar palate. I had heard so many good things about Atla and was excited to visit and try their small plates. Unfortunately, the meal disappointed. We ordered the brussel sprout tacos (with peanuts and a spicy red sauce), which the waiter said was the best item on the menu. I was surprised to find the dish overly oily and not overly tasty. We also split the ceviche, which came with cucumbers, avocado, and red onion. The ceviche was lacking in taste, and left both me and my dinner companion with slight stomach aches (maybe due to the high acidity - although I usually have no problem with ceviche). Visited ATLA last night! Have been waiting to try it since it's been the talk of the town... overall... way too expensive for what it is. Tasty food. Atmosphere: Nice space, good music. Felt more like a coffee shop turned bar at night than a restaurant. Service: Neutral. Non interactive and not great at describing the menu items considering that the ingredients are not listed (see photos). Also our server was CLEARLY "recommending" the most expensive items on the menu. It was quite hilarious. Cocktail: (see photos) Salado verde: just a salty cucumber mezcal drink with pieces of Serrano peppers inside. It was an interesting cocktail. I would recommend to try if you like mezcal. It was smooth and you deff taste the saltiness which balances well with the cucumber juice. If you ask the waiter he would say "it's a savory cocktail"..... Food: (see photos). Overall the food was tasty except for the enfrijoladas. What we ordered: 1. Arctic char tostada $16 for one serving. It's small but yummy. Think round & thin hard shell taco, spread with farmers cheese and topped with 3 mini Arctic char rolls (sushi like shape). 2. Prawns $28 for 5 pieces. These were also tasty. They are cooked whole so be ready for some eyes! 3. "Seasonal" Tlayuda for a "MP" of $26: essentially grilled cauliflower, Okra, Bosc pear, and mixed greens served on the thin tortilla spread with farmers cheese. This was tasty as well but seriously almost $30 for that? 4. Enfrijoladas $16. It's a huge bowl of what looks like mole with a tortilla filled with feta cheese buried under it. Did not enjoy the dish. Not sure what it's made of because the server wasn't clear and I just gave up trying to get information. It's bitter like mole. Don't recommend this one. I don't mind paying money for a place that deserves it. I will not return and do not recommend based on the ultimate value for price paid. read more

Everything was good and well-done, the venue is gorgeous but in the end it was not exceptional and definitely does not match the price tag. My overproofed margarita was overpriced. My chilaquiles were $16 and were nothing but tortillas, crema, and green salsa? And then it's costs $4 to add an egg??? None of these ingredients are really special or expensive and it blows my mind the amount of money they are charging for it. I think the best example was the concha (a Mexican baked good) we at the end of the meal which is $6. Best concha I have ever had and they took the time to warm if for you. But considering that conchas in my neighborhood are usually $.50, this dessert was wayyy overpriced. We ended up getting more food after somewhere else. I would say that you should come here and expect really well-done Mexican food but be warned that you're probably overpaying for really regular ingredients and not really amazing or complex flavors and foods. read more

Enrique Olvera, one of the most acclaimed Mexican chefs with Pujol in Mexico City and Cosme in New York, has joined the movement, recently opening a casual restaurant in the NoHo neighborhood that opens in the morning. The restaurant has a breakfast menu they serve until 4 p.m., and then transitions to other more normal dinner options. Even for the dinner menus, what particularly distinguishes Atla from other Mexican restaurants is the focus on the "healthy" in the use of ingredients and flavor. For those who are used to rich and heavy flavors of nachos and enchiladas, Atla could be a major culture shock and/or disappointment. That doesn't mean my wife Jun and I didn't enjoy the pleasant dinner we've had a on recent Sunday. There were a lot of dishes that we liked and the somewhat novel departure from how we typically conceive of Mexican food was quite well-executed. Jun has always been a huge guacamole fan so we obviously had to start our meal with herb guacamole on the table, which Jun appreciated quite a lot for its moderate level of seasoning (jalapeno sprinkled throughout the guacamole was the only thing that added flavor) and the way the avocado was cut in rather large chunks to give a nice textural effect. Who would've thought a simple maitake mushroom quesadilla could have such a nice balance of clean flavor? Once I opened up the quesadilla, all I saw was cheese and mushroom but I was a huge fan of this dish and felt I could eat this for my lunch every day at the office. It was that delicious! Fish Milanese with cucumber sauce on the side looked promising but turned out to be underwhelming as it didn't quite have the wow factor we were hoping to find. On the other hand, the chicken enchiladas was very good, with rich but not overpowering red chili pepper sauce really giving a nice spicy kick to soft tortilla with chicken inside. For dessert, definitely try to corn tamal that was delightful but not overly sweet just the way I liked. The restaurant recently started taking reservations and as long as you book a few days in advance, you won't have much issue getting a seat. It also helps that the bar area is on the spacious side so you can always have your meal there on a walk-in basis. I liked the modern, ecofriendly vibe of the dining space similar to Cosme, filled with mostly younger crowds hanging out in downtown Manhattan. We were both expecting to get some nice tequila or mescal based cocktails during our meal, but none of the drinks we had ordered were good. I understand the direction that the kitchen was taking to bring Mexican cuisine to the healthier side, but the same experiment with drinks didn't work quite the way we had hoped. Either way, Atla has the potential to be a paradigm setting Mexican restaurant and I look forward to seeing how it evolves over time. Came here for a tapas style date night and managed to snag a seat outside to people watch. I was super excited for the dinner options, but they were a little too unflattering by the time they got to my table. Ordered us a few drinks and enough tapas to decide that it wasn't the place for us. There wasn't too much of a wow factor to the dishes. Service was super slow. Not sure if it was because we were dining outside and they have very limited outdoor seating, but it was hard to even wave down someone for just water. Now even though this was about four days before NYC went into lockdown, the restaurant was packed. Wall to wall. From first dates to foodies looking for the dinner mezcal pairing. But also ear to ear grins seen on all dining room guests. When you have two powerhouse Mexican chefs Oliver's + Soto-Ines at the helm then it's gonna be on another level. After cozying up to the bar and getting situated with the menu, I looked up and a couple of staff members made sure I got water and my order for a sparkling wine. Pinkies up baby! Then I asked for a recommendation of what to finish off my night that started off with a food crawl of four south Asian fast casual spots and now was about to end with finger licking fantastic Cauliflower Al Pastor Tacos. We got to sit outside and take advantage of the beautiful fall day! Service was excellent. Our waiter made great recommendations. AND the food was delicious! Definitely a healthier/trendier Mexican cuisine, but still had those traditional flavors we love. Chilaquiles - red or green (we did both - both were delicious!) There was a good chip to salsa ratio. Chips maintained a nice crunch. The flax seed made it feel healthy, and the onion added some nice flavor. Guacamole goat cheese - overall favorite! Great creaminess. Amazing flavors. I resisted this place for months due to the seating. Since I walk by dozens of times a week, I couldn't help but think the patrons were uncomfortable. Trust me, it's not the case. And since we all know how reputable the chef and team of Cosme and Atla are, you must go. You will have lots of questions about items on the menu, ask away, the servers are well versed. I've been fortunate enough to never have to wait to eat here but would if I had to, it's sooo good. Similar to Cosme, every bite is so delicious. Those who enjoy mezcal, the choices are extensive. I opted for margaritas. Watch out for the overproof version, it is serious. You won't know what hit you (well, it's tequila). Definitely get the herbed guacamole. Fresh herbs abound, as do jalapeños. The huge, fresh, blue tortilla chip is phenomenal. Side note, things really lean toward spicy here. We ate: market vegetable tlayuda with chicken. It was crispy, flavorful and the flavors in the bites changed depending on where in the dish I was digging away. Leon had the pamblazon, sort of like a Mexican sloppy joe. Similarly complex in flavors. The sweet corn tamale offered a nice few bites when shared of salt, sweet and crunch. I've also had brunch here. I can't stop thinking about the rich mole and eggs. Love the variety of milks available for cafe con leche. This place really is great and lives up to the hype. Don't be scared off by the fast casually appearing seating. It's much more cosy than that. What with Atla's hotspot status, I expected a wait when we headed over around noon on a Sunday. I was preparing myself for a trip to Honeybrains next door. Turns out snagging a table isn't too hard; we were seated immediately and we only saw people waiting a few minutes at the door. That said, it's buzzing. Service handles the rush masterfully. All of our interactions were prompt and polite. We had water within a few minutes of sitting down. Pleasantly, sparkling water was complimentary, and served in carafes with a simple fluorescent-yellow rubber band to distinguish them from their plain, flat water cousins. The above may seem small, but it's emblematic of the experience here. Very professional yet thoughtful. The decor is sleek and modernist, with a small pop of color. Reminds me of a contemporary museum cafe. Similarly, they have excellent espresso. Like, don't even need to put any sugar in it kind of excellent. The menu is decently sized and you'll find both breakfast and lunch offerings at mid-day; think "contemporary with a Mexican touch" rather than the familiar laundry list of Mexican egg dishes. I had the quinoa salad with a poached egg and my boyfriend had the chicharron in salsa verde. Food came out in about 15 minutes. The verdict? My poached egg was perfect and the quinoa was normal. The cucumber yogurt was very good, but there was too much of it (or maybe too much oil around it), and I ended up with a soupy mess by the end. My boyfriend had a similar experience. His chicharron had tender, flavorful pork, and the fresh tortillas served in a tiny basket were great. But the very few pieces of pork were drowned in the salsa verde, making it more of a soup than a sauce. We both thought that the dishes were slight misses but agreed that it seemed unfair to judge Atla on those alone. I wasn't passionate about it, but this place does check a lot of boxes: great location, sleek space, perfect service, healthy and unhealthy options, big drink menu calling my name. Would not recommend this place - overpriced and mostly flavorless. The decor and vibe is nice and the staff is friendly but the food was very disappointing. The spicy margarita was decent (but not very spicy) and the guacamole was good but the rest of the dishes ranged from underwhelming to bad. The flautas were absolutely flavorless, we had to ask for salt to season it. My friend requested their spiciest salsa and they brought a sesame-based sauce which was extremely mild. The fish in the aguachile also didn't have much taste but otherwise it was an ok dish. The tlayuda was unfortunately really not good, we didn't eat most of it. Despite being buffeted by the bro-tinged winds of upper SoHo and Union Square, you can still definitely get some of the very finest luxury Mexican food for this area at this place. Isn't it wild that Manhattan has so many restaurants that I just said that this is the best "luxury Mexican" just within a few block radius? Cosme, for instance, has even better luxury Mexican as does Empellon Midtown, but those are a bit uptown/downtown. As for Atla, there is a truly god level, masterpiece dish here: The Fish Milanese. I cannot even express how good this dish is. If some other elements of the meal feel a little off, or you feel a bit stressed by the restaurant's hectic atmosphere, just know that the fish milanese alone makes Atla worth a stop pretty much any time of day. read more

Wonderful spot to grab a bite in the afternoon. I've been here maybe 4-5 times now, probably more to be honest, and have never had a bad dish. It is pretty pricey so be prepared, but if you want a special experience with great food and atmosphere it is worth every penny. I recommend going with someone or some friends that you can share food with because the menu works a bit better for sharing a few plates. Stand outs for me are: Pork Belly Taco - One of the most well constructed, delicious tacos I've ever had. It is $14, which is crazy - I am used to street tacos in Mexico City - but this is a totally different experience, and I highly recommend getting it. Quesadilla - You can tell every ingredient is fresh and is a perfect, classic quesadilla. Ranchero Eggs - Maybe the first huevos rancheros I've ever had that felt kind of healthy to eat. The sauce is fresh, bright and not overwhelming. Churros - Kind of a mix between a churro and the airiest, fluffiest doughnut you've ever had. Incredible. Served with Chocolate. Ordered with espresso. I recommend coming before dinner, its great for people watching. I've seen quite a few celebs casually eating here, if thats your thing, and the large windows make the space feel more spacious then it actually is. A side note, I once came while they had breakfast still and had the greatest scrambled eggs I've ever had in my life. Simple scrambled eggs with tortillas but done to perfection. For food, we got the raw swordfish dish, short rib tacos, guacamole, and mushroom tacos. By far the mushroom tacos (verde) were our favorites-unique and full of flavor. The portions were a bit small for their price unfortunately which brings this to 4 stars. Nevertheless, the night ended on a strong note with two incredible desserts, the churros, and the winner of the night, the tres leches. We could've eaten an entire cake of the tres leches. If you love bland, basic, overpriced and faux inventive Mexican food, then you won't be as disappointed as we were with the meal. My wife and I were so excited to try this place after recently returning from a trip in the Yucatan. Unfortunately, it's just another one of those overhyped, popular with the Instagram set, type of restaurants. For drinks we ordered the Mexican hot chocolate and the horchata. The hot chocolate was actually the best thing about the entire meal. I should have taken the waiters advice in the horchata when he said "It's....not like any horchata you've ever had." Completely true, because I've never had sesame milk that someone called horchata before. Literally no cinnamon or any other spices to distinguish it from chilled watered down tahini juice...gross. We then ordered a $9 concha, a sweet bread, which was good; however , it was more like a "here is free bread for the table good"rather than an additional menu item. You would be better served just going to a bakery in the area. For the mains we had the chicken enchiladas (green and red sauce) as well as the fish tacos. Where do I begin? The chicken enchiladas were the definition of average. In fact, I think I'm positive I had better from the frozen meal section of Trader Joe's...not kidding. For $19/$20 I was expecting much note nuanced flavor and creativity instead of basic shredded chicken with sauce on top that looks pretty because of a streak of crema. The deconstructed fish taco was just plain mediocre - for nearly $25 it should be life changing. The fried fish filet, although crispy, lacked basic seasonings such as salt amongst other things. The salsa was barely edible, it seemed like they put a cup's worth of lime juice alongside some cucumbers and as if they were trying to make up for all of the flavoring they somehow missed in every other dish. The corn tortillas were ok but at $1 each, they were as overpriced as the entire restaurant was overhyped. In sum, this restaurant is crowded with people eager to eat expensive bland food. This is incredibly overpriced Mexican food. Guacamole was $18. A cauliflower taco was $14. Shrimp taco was $15. They were not TINY, but I could easily eat 3. I understand that you pay for quality, but I just didn't think the quality was there. Mesa Coyoacan and Oxomocco both have better food for less. But they are across the river. Still worth the trip in my humble opinion. I prefer the entire empellon franchise, tacombi, black ant, la esquina and javelina (tex-mex). If you don't care about value at all and you like dainty food then I would say that you could consider Atla. I did not outright dislike my food. Atla never came back after the pandemic. The food used to be fantastic- it is not anymore. The portions used to be fairly priced, now the portions are small ( the is guac is half the size, the taco dishes include ONE small taco) for the price. They used to offer free sparkling water, they do not anymore. All the good waiters from 2019 are gone. Pre-pandemic, there would be no seats to be had; now it is always half-empty, even on the weekend. Service is slooow and just plain bad. the MAIN dish worth getting here if you are searching for why it has a Michelin star is the Arctic char Ceviche dish under the appetizers section. this dish is phenomenal and a totally new experience in life. everything else we got was very mediocre and in some ways, actually quite terrible tasting :( steak birria was good - but not outstanding compared to others I've had in the city. would not repeat purchase. the Oaxacan coffee was the most bitter, hard to drink coffee cocktail I've ever had to drink. I LOVE coffee and I love the bitter notes of the beans, but this was super hard to wash down even for me. the spicy marg was good but the pepper was very overpowering the avocado taco was beyond terrible to me at $8 for the taco. it's just part of an avocado + peanut butter flavoring. anyone who recommends this on Yelp has no taste buds and I feel angry that I got the dish based on yelp reviews. Went here with a friend to check out this place for brunch. We actually arrived around 10:55am (they open at 11am) and were able to be seated at the high top table right away. After perusing the menu, we decided to split a few dishes: Concha (3 stars): I'm from California and have had many a concha that tasted 10 times better and cost 10 times less. Rachero eggs (3.5 stars): The flavor here was great, but the dish itself was a little lackluster and not very big. Corn pancakes (4 stars): These were probably the best thing we had--and even then there seemed like there was something missing texturally. Fresh-squeezed mandarin orange juice (3 stars): I always appreciate fresh-squeezed juice, but this did not have a lot of flavor and had zero pulp--which was a disappointment. Overall, this place has had a ton of hype and definitely serves up some interesting dishes, but I just did not find them to hit the high marks I was expecting. They did well accommodating our variety of dietary needs (& at the same time not making the whole table "suffer" despite doing this group style menu). I passed by ATLA a few months ago on my walk home and was excited that a new restaurant was opening in the neighborhood. Since it's opened I have been numerous times and love the food!!! Iced Cafe Con Leche- amazing! Appetizers- the concha is really tasty as are the split pea tlacoyo. Mains- I have had the chilaquiles with a poached egg on top and while these are really good it's mostly a bowl of chips with sauce so if you're looking for something heartier I would go for the rancheros or the enchiladas. Get them divorciados style. And my FAVORITE item here is the quinoa salad with cucumber yogurt. It is so refreshing definitely get this to share or start with. The staff is great and very friendly. Mostly I am generous and try to stay positive with my observations here , BUT ! $17 for guacamole ?!?!?!?!?!?!? They took the avocado ,sliced it to medium cubes/chunks , add couple of cilantro leaves and served with very good home made tortilla . But ! $17 ??????????? NO!!!!! At least the rest was FANTASTIC ! Great chicken enchiladas with fantastic spicy green sauce and for dessert great arroz con lychee served with mango ice cream ,so refreshing and uniquely good. Fan place ,will return but not for the guacamole . Well , after a very mediocre lunch with tostadas and cold mussels dish (great for the summer maybe.....) and pretty annoying non acoustic place i will reduce this place to 4 stars , not fan anymore . read more
