Excellent meal at Atla. We had the pork belly taco, the cauliflower taco, aguachile fish and steak... shared everything. The flavors were incredibly rich and interesting - and the presentation was lovely. The drink menu was a little overwhelming and I'm not a fan of going to a restaurant where the drink menu is 5 pages and the food is 1 page... not my style. What held it back from 5 stars was that they needed more descriptive food menu and more engaging service. All around, exceptional flavors and definitely worth trying. The food here was so fresh and imaginative, it brought tears to my eyes. As a former Texan, the Mexican food in NYC doesn't cut it. But when I bumbled into Atla, my world changed. The guac is to die for and the brussels sprout taco was delicious as as the quesadilla. The waiters have that special grace that I've found only in central American countries...I just loved Atla. We ordered the guac (best I've ever had but ask for more chips), flautas and the quesadillas. Although the ports are awfully small and left us wanting more, everything tasted absolutely delicious! Although the setting of this place was beautiful, the food was ultimately overpriced and did not live up to the hype. The place itself was decorated very simply and very elegantly. My friend and I walked in here for lunch one weekday and were greeted with very good service! However, we were disappointed to see that the menu was overpriced, and too fancy for what it is. I ordered the tostada with fish and was disappointed when my entire meal was the size of a CD (this was probably my fault for not asking first). The first question that needs to be addressed is why this place has been on so many popular lists lately. If you can't tell already, my experience here recently was less than average, and after hearing so many good things, I felt the need to share. First, the place has a very casual environment. I'm all for eating at local diners or grabbing some cheap, good food out, but this was casual in the sense that it felt I was eating in a museum café but paying for something very different. The dim lighting and lack of any real atmosphere didn't help the situation. We started with drinks, which were good but small. For $16 each, I had expected a little bit more from them in terms of quantity or quality. We moved on to the food, which was a little better, but still not great. The ceviche (which was actually presented very nicely), shishito pepper flatbread, and arctic char were all generally average. The arctic char, which seems to be a favorite from most people, was a little odd with the inclusion of 'farmers cheese,' which I think was cream cheese and the abundance of capers. I can't say that I was excited by anything that we tried, and given the relatively limited menu, I don't know that the rest of the menu would offer much more. Overall, I'm still left wondering how this place has landed such good reviews from local publications. Maybe I came here on an off night, but I don't think I'll be returning. read more

I really wish this place had happy hour bc I'd be coming here weekly for their espresso martini. I know everyone raves about the margaritas and they were also good (especially the spicy one) but the mezcal espresso martini might just be my favorite drink in the city right now. Food wise everything was solid, the only thing that blew me away was the mushrooms. They were so tender and crispy and perfectly paired with the acidic salsa verde. Those mushrooms on a taco would be killer. For dessert, even though the churros looked impressive, I was a bigger fan of the Tres Leches Cake which had a such a subtle sweetness to it. It left me going back for more bites than I thought I would. The only reason this place doesn't get more love from me is the $$$. The starting price for drinks is $17 and while that fits in with other restaurants in this location, I just don't think it's fully justified. If they had a happy hour I'd be all in. read more

I came in for a nice cold beer today and perhaps something to eat. They have an all day menu and I chose the shrimp taco. It's only 1 order so I got 2. Oh.. my.. gah.. wow. Just wow. Then they brought us salsa which we told them we didn't order and the waiter just walked away. When the bill came they charged us for the salsa and the messed up drink. We had also ordered churros (which come with 4 but they told us they could bring 5 so we could each have one). When they came to the table there were only 4 and when we asked where the 5th one was the waiter said they "don't do that". My boyfriend ordered the huevos rancheros with chicken. The corn pancakes beat the huevos rancheros easily. They're a great flavor profile but couldn't help wishing there was some walnuts or almonds for crunch factor on top. The huevos rancheros were nothing out of this world. I've dropped in here a few times and grabbed a seat at the bar. The spicy marg is a nice drink to go with the salsa trio. The glasses they serve the drinks in feel cheap as do the various non mainstream tequilas and mezcals that they carry. Honestly it's been just fine for a few drinks to pass the time or to take an edge off. One of the few spots in NoHo where you can walk in and grab a seat at the bar. I have not been drawn to their menu, so I've limited my stays here each time I've stopped in. Living in the neighborhood, it seems to be a lively spot - but it isn't totally for me. Came here on a Monday evening for dinner with a friend, so getting a table was easy that time. This is celebrity chef Enrique Olvera's new casual tapas type restaurant in Noho. Having been to & loving Olvera's other much celebrated nyc restaurant Cosme--I'll be honest I had probably expectations that were too high. Everything was decent in terms of quality but nothing really blew me away. That being said allow me to detail what we had. Arctic Char tostada Fish Milanesa Pork belly tacos x 2 Brussel sprout taco The best things were the brussel sprout taco--carmelized crispy sprouts made for a vegetarian taco this carnivore would gladly eat again and again. The fish milanesa was probly the largest dish and came with a nice refreshing green sauce however in reality it didn't seem anymore special than any other fresh fried fish filet you could get at an halfway decent fish & chips shop. The pork belly tacos were raved about on yelp so we ordered double & while it was tasty it wasn't quite living up to the hype & not worthy of double order. The arctic char tostada was yummy and giving me ideas of how to better use my smoked salmon at home. Overall a trendy new spot sure to be a hit due to its affiliation with Cosme & Olvera but nothing I ordered resonated enough with my palate to induce a repeat dinner visit. Came in at around 5pm, there were not many tables. Service was slow, waiters were not helpful or friendly. When I asked about the menu they said "is that it or you have more questions" food was not amazing, tortillas were hard, stale and flavorless they also didn't have the palo santo water, I asked if I could try the spicy peanut butter, said they "don't do that". Aguachile plate was extremely salty it almost felt like I was choking on ocean water. Later asked for a coffee and desert and they forgot about the coffee. My mom was visiting and we were in the area to shop at AWAY and had passed this place on the way -- it was a beautiful day and we were eager to take advantage of some outdoor seating. The wait wasn't bad, considering it was packed inside -- plus, I love when places will text you when your table is ready. The aesthetic is AWESOME. Such a cool, trendy spot with a good vibe. The art on the menus were delightful, as were the cocktails. The food, however, did not reflect the place. The guac seriously lacked some form of citrus or spice, it tasted just like a mashed avocado, but was presented beautifully. My mom and I split it and had a hard time breaking apart the single chip. Having renewed an interest in Mexican Food and culture in 2017 it was just as ATLA was about to open that Enrique Olvera's Mexico City flagship was first experienced, a visit to Pujol in March outperforming what many other culinary tourists had labeled a falling-off at the new location and spurring additional visits to Eno as well as Cosme that were enjoyable enough to justify taking a look at his and Daniela Soto-Innes' all-day Nolita hotspot with a friend on Thursday morning. Currently toqued by Hugo Vera and open for just under ten months, the menu having undergone slow changes and incremental increases in price during both breakfast and lunch/dinner, guests approaching the glass and concrete space on the corner of Lafayette and Great Jones Street will likely first be taken by the simplicity of design and slight silhouette of tables, the menu equally compact and short on descriptions. Taking a far more modest approach than Cosme to Mexican Cuisine, the bulk of fourteen plates available before 1pm fairly traditional with occasional elements of intrigue beyond their substantial price tags, it was beginning with a $7 glass of cold Horchatta made more savory by ground Sesame Seeds that the morning got underway, a Latin American soundtrack mingling with tech-talk from four men to the left and politics as viewed by two yoga-mat toting mothers whose table sat less than a foot away. Pleasant yet efficient in terms of service, the half-full space in general seeing breakfasts delivered within fifteen minutes of ordering, it was after a bit of catching up that three plates and one Concha arrived, the former requiring an extra $3 to add a few warm Tortillas while the $7 Pastry (that was only $5 and bathed in Dulce de Leche when ATLA first opened) was laughably smaller than the 79-cent versions sold at most Mexican grocery stores and only slightly better in terms of freshness and texture. Quickly perusing the rest of the options to figure out where $46 had been spent, a pile of medium thickness Tortilla Chips soaking in Red Sauce and buried under lots of raw Onions plus a $3 fried Egg dubbed Chilaquiles, it was only the addition of Sesame Seeds that elevated this dish beyond what one might get for half at a Restaurant without *Celebrity Chef* status while the "Ranchero Eggs" featured two poached orbs in a pool of thick Tomato Sauce with the heat of Chile Peppers and perhaps a tablespoon of Cotija Cheese. Admittedly getting the flavors right despite nickel-and-diming for Tortillas that were absolutely necessary, yet inexplicably absent, from the Eggs it was finally with ATLA's $15 Enfrijolada that a $96 breakfast came to its conclusion, the pureed Black Bean Enchiladas themselves nothing special but the deeply colored Sauce reminiscent of Olvera's legendary Mole with a bit less complexity but more body. read more

3.5 stars. Overall, the food was pretty good and the service was generally on point, but I found taste for value and overall hype to make this place not worth it and I have no desire to return. I came on a Friday night with 3 of my friends. The space is quite nice - tall ceilings with a sleek vibe. They do not have good tables for parties larger than 2 - they just push round tables together, so there is an awkward space between the tables. The service was pretty good, though at one point someone brought over a drink we hadn't ordered and when we got the check the drink was on the bill. We shared everything family style and what I found most frustrating was every time we ordered something, the server asked "how many of those do you want"? Apparently, almost everything we ordered came in a single serving, the tacos, the tostadas, etc, which would've been fine except for their size and price. For example, it's $16 plus for a taco with a little bit of pork on it. If it was the most amazing taco ever, that's one thing, but it wasn't. Our group ordered the following: 2 margaritas each - they were fine, nothing special and overpriced for the size 2 Arctic Char tostada - these were pretty expense, I think $22 each for a tiny chip with some fish on it, but this was my favorite thing taste wise that we ordered 2 mussels tostadas - there was barely any mussels on this and it included undercooked potatoes - I just didn't really enjoy it Ceviche verde - also didn't really care for this Guacamole - had a nice texture and tasted fine, but for $17 I don't think it was worth it - it was probably 1 avocado with 1 large chip Nopal Salad - I did not care for this 4 pork tacos - these were $16 dollars each, they were good, but maybe $7 good each 2 orders of churros - who doesn't like churros 1 order of another dessert I think it was the sweet corn, I thought it was very bland and didn't enjoy All of this came out to $120 per person which for the amount of food and drinks we ordered seemed like a lot. Overall, I don't generally complain about prices at restaurants, but when you're this hyped up and your food is this tiny , it better blow me out of the water, and this just did not. If you're the type of person that must try the new trendy places, go check it out. But, I liked cosme much better than this place, which was overall a let down. read more

The flavor was too strong, even though I enjoy and am familiar with spicy food. Even the coffee the waiter had recommended was too much with the already spicy food. Enfrijolada ($15) - Not very memorable. Concha ($5) - Mexican sweet bread. Probably the best part, but would not visit the restaurant just for this. Pambazo - The flavor was bland. Atla is one of the most talked about restaurants in the food media all year. Does it live up to the hype? I think it does. Now if you're coming here expecting carne asada fries or other Baja/California style Mexican fare, you're going to be sorely disappointed. This isn't a taqueria. This is a serious restaurant operation with renowned chefs back of house with a more healthful approach to Mexican cuisine. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner...you'll find everything from coconut yogurt bowls to quesadillas. The latter will set you back $11 and while some might scoff at the elevated price tag, it's great, and the right portion size for a human not wanting to fall victim to heart disease by age 40. The common complaint I see is that it's an expensive day out. However, if you focus on the quality of what you're eating and don't get hung up on the fact you can fill up on rice and beans for less money elsewhere, you'll enjoy the experience. If you still can't wrap your head around paying $18 for enchiladas, wait until your parents come to visit you for the holidays and have them pay for it. Everybody wins. read more

I think that this place is awful and over priced and shocked at the good reviews . The food is average and they will not make changes to the dish . I had quesedilla with cheese and mushroom and on a scale of 1-10 would rate it a three . I ended up opening it up and eating the cheese only . The Shrimp tacos were good. We ordered a coke ( 6.00 in a bottle ) and a diet coke ( glass 5.00 no refills) which was very annoying . I realize that food costs are up and rent in NYC is high , however a fountain drink costs about 10 cents and to charge 5.00 and 5.00 for a refill, that is disgusting . He wouldn't care to explain about the dishes, and felt bothered when we asked a second time. You cannot explain Enfrijoladas as "it's beans". The Herb Guacamole, priced at $17, is a waste of money for a partially mashed avocado with some cilantro, mint leaves and pimiento. Plates are small and way to overpriced and they were in a hurry to clean our table...is this a bodega or a casual restaurant? On top of that my friend and I got sick from the food. I'm a snob when it comes to Mexican food. I grew up with some of the best in Southern Cali, and braved Montezuma's revenge to feast on street meat and other delicacies in Mexico. So I approached this minimal, fancy looking, big windowed restaurant with Olvera's name on it, with a certain amount of expectation. Bf and I sat for a late brunch on a recent weekend and tried the smoky red and zesty green chicken enchiladas (when in doubt, order both!). Three small tortilla rolls of chicken floated in a copious amount of sauce, almost like a hearty bowl of soup. Queso fresco, crèma, and thinly sliced onions topped the dishes. The sauces, smoothly milled to perfection and spiced just so, were exquisite. The enchilada itself, less so, but still very tender and tasty. We thoroughly enjoyed them both. This was perhaps the lightest Mexican dish I'd had in a long time. We closed our meal with the chocolate pudding, which had salt flakes and what looked like EVOO drizzled on top. This was divine and a perfect amount to share. Rich and sumptuous, but not cloyingly sweet. Every dessert out there should aim for these qualities. I also enjoyed my nonalcoholic drink, which was a frothy agua fresca with pineapple, passion fruit pulp, and cinnamon. Service was attentive, even if casual, and the shift transition for staff did not affect our meal. This was no Pujol (which friends have raved about) but I wasn't expecting transcendent here. Came here on a weekend for brunch - was recommended this place by a friend. I really like the vibes of this place, we sat in an indoor patio area which was nice because the sun was out and it was hot outside. The server was quick to give us our menus and attentive throughout (checked to see if we had enough water at all times). My friend and I shared 3 dishes: the mushrooms dish, Brussels sprouts, and huevos rancheros with avocado. Out of the 3, the Brussels sprouts were my fav!!! It's perfectly roasted and the sauce that comes with it has a bit of a kick to it (think it's a spicy peanut butter base sauce).
