The guys behind great hit Cosme opened this place a few months ago and finally I made it for brunch AND dinner. The place still has that modern, cool, trendy vibe that I love from Cosme. But Atla is a bit more casual than it's big brother (no reservations) and it has a great long bar that makes it perfect to hang out for drinks and have something to eat. Full disclosure: I have friends that work here, so needless to say, I thought service was excellent I tried: - Arctic Char Tostada ($16): delicious smoked/raw fish over a tostada with a soft greek-kind of yogurt - Nopal salad ($14?): great as a side or if you add chicken, poached egg, avocado, could also be a great main dish. The dressing was great, not too strong, not too light either. Loved the grilled nopalitos - yum! - Chicken Enchiladas Divorciadas ($15): divorciadas means that the sauce is half red and half green. Great way to try both. The red was my fave, but it was a tiny bit spicy for my non-Mexican palate. Happy you can combine both to bring it a bit down. - Quesadilla ($8): the tortilla felt sooo fresh! Great to dip in the enchiladas divorciadas. - Margarita ($15): awesome drink! I think this one will be my to go drink when I come here. Just as the Ninja is my go to drink at Cosme. - Mezcal tasting (off-menu): we tried 4 different mezcales. Would recommend for anyone new to this great Mexican delicacy or advanced mescal drinkers. - Carajillo ($14): glass with ice, expresso shot and Licor 43 (sweet Spanish liquor, remember Mexico was once colonized by Spain). Perfect to end any meal! Overall, the food, coffee and cocktails were all great. I can see this place being perfect for breakfast meetings if you are in the area, brunch (served till 4pm) and dinner (from 5 pm). I just love this place and to me, it totally lives up to the hype. I do think this is more of a brunch/lunch place than a dinner place and I'd recommend treating it as such. Not only is the wait longer for dinner, but the menu and ambiance seem more orientated for daytime. Perhaps it's good for drinks and nibbles at night if you're wanting something light. Weekend brunch had no wait, but the tables were mostly full. Our server was very pleasant and when he didn't know the answer to something, he went to go find out. The food here is really pure, healthy, and fresh. That's not to say everything is light or diet food. There are heavy and rich dishes with ample amounts of cream or cheese, but they are well balanced and using the finest ingredients. The menu is well suited for sharing several dishes as they tend to be on the smaller side, but you won't feel pressured to get multiple if you're not craving a lot of food. Concha is a super popular starter here. It's a Mexican shell-shaped sweet bread/pastry that has a sugar topping, giving it a distinctive pattern. The bread is soft on both the outside and inside and is definitely sweet. The concha at Atla is made with orange blossom water, which gives it a definite citrus flavor. The split pea tlacoyo is amazing and I highly recommend trying it. A tlacoyo is a stuffed, oval-shaped, lightly fried, masa bread. This one is stuffed with split pea puree and topped with a salsa verde and fresh queso mixed with creme fraiche. It comes in a serving of two and it's just so tasty, I really couldn't get enough. The quinoa salad is equally amazing and I wouldn't even know how to choose between the two. They are so different, one heavier, the other lighter, so the choice would really come down to that. But there's no need to choose, eating both together makes the perfect amount. The quinoa salad has red quinoa, pico de gallo, and a cucumber yogurt sauce. The pico de gallo is not your typical pico de gallo - it's more a deconstructed version consisting of halved yellow and red grape tomatoes, red onion, and cilantro. The dish also has thinly sliced green Serrano chilis, giving it heat and amplifying the otherwise tame flavors. It's so fresh, light, and delicious. The place is somewhat small, but very open with a simple and clean decor. The outdoor seating is perfect for half the year. The dinnerware and glasses are very modern and fit perfectly with the vibe of the place. Glass bottles of water are provided for each table, so you can fill up as necessary. Was able to grab a 1PM Saturday brunch reservation about two hours in advance, which I was surprised by. We sat promptly, which is always appreciated. Our food was great. We started with the Guacamole, which is a pretty substantial portion. I had the Rachero eggs with avocado, which were great. My friend had the salsa verde chicken enchiladas, which were also great. All food items we ordered deserved five stars. However, a couple things that bothered us that will make me hesitate to come back: Drink orders (a margarita and a hot tea) took way too long to arrive. The tea didn't arrive until after we had gotten our main course, and the margarita also took too long. I understand they were busy, but the drinks felt like an afterthought which should not be the case. The guacamole comes with one large corn chip. Given the large portion size of the guac, this wasn't enough. We asked our server for another chip, and he said he would come back with one. About 10 minutes later when we had not gotten the chip, we asked a manager for one, and he told us it would be an additional charge (ended up being $3) for this. This is frustrating because 1) We were not told this the first time we asked for one and 2) $3 for a chip? really? It was already highly priced, so this really bothered me. NO. Do not go here. We had the worst experience here. Showed up on a slow Tuesday night, was quoted a 30 minute wait. ok not bad, so we waited outside the restaurant since the inside is miniature. 30 min pass, 45 min pass, 1 hour passes, we are being very patient. still not seated. We decide to wait inside since maybe they'll notice we've been waiting for an hour and they'll seat us. We decide to order drinks at the bar... wait another 30 minutes for our drinks, NO DRINKS ARRIVE. We finally get seated and we tell the waiter that we ordered drinks at the bar and he says they'll be out shortly. looking at the menu we already know what we want to order since we've been waiting for an hour and a half and had time to look at the menu. BASICALLY WE WERE JUST IGNORED BY THE ENTIRE WAITSTAFF. No one stopped by our table to take our order. They forgot about our drinks. They finally did take our order after we had to be obnoxious waving our arms in air to get their attention. THE FOOD TOOK ANOTHER HOUR TO RECEIVE, SAME WITH THE DRINKS. They didn't even comp our drinks for the ridiculous unreasonable wait time!!!! Nice restaurants will usually compensate you if you have a terrible service experience/unexpected long wait time by giving free drinks or a free appetizer. The food was average. It tasted like any other modern Mexican restaurant. It has the most basic things on the menu; Quesadilla, Enchiladas, Guacamole, Avocado Toast. This place is for Basic white girls. They probably go crazy for this stuff. I'm not coming back here and i'm not recommending this place to friends or family. I would avoid if I were you. The whole experience will just make you agitated. We also noticed that the two girls sitting next to us had issues with their order - the waiter forgot to put in part of their order, one main dish and one dessert so they were waiting around an hour for their dessert trying to get the attention of one of the staff to see where it was. Visiting from LA and we stumbled on this place on our tourist trek. This place was absolutely comical. From the portions to the wait times. This shit was so bad I thought we were on a hidden camera show or something. The wine portion was a tablespoon and my husbands drink came out right when our food came out. Wanted to try this place as my sister was in town and heard good things..BUT... DO. NOT. RECOMMEND!!! 1) Service was terrible. Our waiter was good, but we had an issue with an order of drinks. After taking the drinks back to be changed, he brought the same drinks back. We asked for another round of drinks to be made again *properly*, and the manager was sent over to deal with the situation. I honestly have never gotten so much attitude from a manger, as she tried to school me on the "special" tequila they used while rolling her eyes in my face and snatching the drinks back. They finally came back after the third time and were decent. 2) The ordering process / menu is confusing and cumbersome. You have to jot down the items you want to order in a form that makes absolutely no sense. Throughout the meal the waiter kept coming back to us, asking if we had received different dishes. Totally disorganized and chaotic. 3) The dishes were somewhat tasty, although I must say they were just spicy with not much complexity to the flavors. If you like spicy-ish it's ok, but NOTHING wowed us and this particularly includes the oddly presented HUGE burnt chip that came over the guacamole. 4) The aesthetic of the restaurant is cute-ish, but the setup up with the bar where you have to walk around to get to the bathroom lacks any sense of flow and is truly awkward. Also, the seating is uncomfortable and super tight. 5) At the end of your dining experience an iPad is brought to your table where they swipe your card. The waiter then stands there for your signature and asks you to promptly enter a tip **In front of him**. This is is fine at a coffee shop, but makes for a super uncomfortable situation when you have already had a bad dining experience and should be allowed to tip at your discretion without someone shoving a huge iPad in your face. It truly breaks my heart to give a restaurant I SO wanted to love only two stars. You see, I adore Cosme. I pop in sometimes just for a cocktail and a Tlayuda. Cosme is everything you want in Mexican fine dining. Olvera's handiwork is cosmic. Stunning. ATLA is far from stunning. After fussing with the annoying Resy system (a guessing game of "does it work? does it not work?" with no answer because they have no phone number and no one can return an email...), I finally scored a reservation. Oddly hard on a Tuesday night. I walked in and no one greeted me or seated me, I had to find my friend seated at the bar and mosey around until I could find the host who abandoned his post. My friend and I sat down at a small table, frustratingly small for how many plates we ultimately ordered. I ordered the overproof margarita, she a Mexican champagne (very good for $). We proceeded to get the guacamole, a delicious blend of fresh herbs and spicy basil. I was pleased. While all this is going on, I'm desperately trying to get my margarita and after asking for lemons a waiter brings us a plate of limes. After my friend finishes her champagne, the waiter takes it away and non-verbally asks to "cut-off" the drink. It was so weird. Trying to get the other dishes to come was such a challenge. We waited so long and slowly ate the guac and asked for another chip (they are one big chip) for which we were charged another $3. They were good... but not that good. I ordered the Arctic char, which I truly enjoyed, I have to say. The fish was perfect in flavor and cut, the tortilla crisp, the capers tangy, the cream sauce on it, elegant. I could have had three. Again. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting for the next dish. Upon the suggestion of the waiter, I got a split pea tlacoyo, a sort of corn pocket with the peas inside with cheese on top. Okay, it was the most mediocre ~$16 dish ever. Filling, but boring. I should have gotten the enfrijoladas which tables around us were devouring. I wish the waiter didn't mislead me. I wish he had asked if I wanted something else. My friend was chowing down on a chicken quesadilla which was very tasty and good, but again, just... fine. At the end of the night, my friend was not charged on the bill for the champagne, so we decided to do the right thing and tell them. After three waiters coming over to figure out the price of the champers, they finally charged us more. For making us wait so long, they should have just given it to us for free. Going to the bathroom was obnoxious, which wasn't clearly marked. Just some door that said, "Yes this is it" or some bs. I give this two stars for the mediocre service, the overpriced dishes, and the stuffed up environment. Maybe I expected too much? Maybe I'm like a spited lover who just wanted too much? I'll go back to Cosme religiously and I'm legit going to Mexico City next week to eat at Olvera's place but I hope someone ups this game and puts a phone number on the website. Came around 5 pm on a weekday and it was a very different take on Mexican cuisine. All the dishes were fairly light and small, which make them perfect for sharing. We ordered the avocado toast, quinoa, and the enchiladas. Highly recommend the quinoa dish, but enchiladas could've used more flavor, especially in the sauces. If you want a side of covid with your tacos, Atla is your place. While the food may be good, the service is AWFUL. We had reservations, and still had to wait 30 minutes. The seating situation they have shouldn't be allowed during covid. I had 2 bikers bump into me/my table, and there were people standing around my table while waiting for their tables. I have so many positive things to say about ATLA - delicious food, friendly staff, and nice ambience - but the three stars rating is due to the lack of consistency and alignment between their prices, portion sizes, and ambience. Positive: they were quick to accommodate my friend and I amidst their existing reservations, the waitress was helpful in explaining and recommending items on the menu for each of our dietary choices, the food was full of flavor and beautifully presented. Negative: that same food that was so beautiful was also served in very small portions. I had the Season Tlayuda (vegan minus the feta cheese) (see pic included) and my friend had the Fish Milanese. My item was listed as the market price (I understand that can greatly fluctuate)and I was shocked to see that it was $28 when we received the bill (more than my friend's fish!). ATLA has a great atmosphere and feels upscale, but this felt out of range. Additionally, we ordered our drinks not long after sitting down and our food about 15 minutes later. Our food came out within 5-7 minutes and another 5 after that our followed our drinks. For the price range I would expect a more fluid presentation of our meal. Amidst these few comments, it's hard to deny that the drinks and food are creative and delicious. Hard to say if I'd give this place another shot due to the prices, but it shouldn't stop you. read more

I really love their food. Have been there a few times, both for lunch and dinner. It's the same menu - you just get to have more cocktails with dinner :-) I loved Cosme, so I had some expectations and they were totally met. Their food always gives me an amazing cuisine fix. My favorite is the prawns. They are big shrimps (5 pieces) with so much deliciousness even without the sauce. Their menu is written with a bunch of names you do not recognize, so we always ask the staff who's happy to describe them to you. Most of their cocktails are variations from many classics but with mezcal, and they are good. They also have delicious home-made sodas. The space is not big, and the tables and chairs are sort of small because, like Cosme, their dishes are to be shared, which means you'll end up with a few plates and drinks on your table. Yes, they are very good about bringing only 1 or 2 dishes at one time. But I especially felt the tightness on my recent visit when everyone has a big puffy coat. You *can* check in your coat, but it also got a little chilly even though we were sitting in the opposite side from the entrance. Staff is friendly and I like that they don't rush you much. Their food and drinks are something I tell my friends who are looking for good food. Their food excites me more than most others, and I can't wait to go back. read more

So, I really hoped to give this 4 or 5 stars. I have been to Cosme twice. Totally underwhelmed the first time, liked it more the second. I had high hopes for Atla. The scene is nice, albeit loud. The counter seating does not look comfortable and there aren't bag hooks. The tables are much better, even if pretty tight. The food is good to very good, though not amazing. But, it is WAY overpriced - I am seriously not one to normally complain about this. Truly. But honestly, you'll barely spend more if you go to Cosme instead! I mean, $15 for a single tiny cauliflower taco? They are also going to nickel and dime you, so be prepared for that. Don't expect much alcohol in your drinks. Expect to pay $4 if you need an extra tortilla (these are cheap-ass tortillas, too), or $4 for a slice of avocado. I mean, really... it's ridiculous. The service is OK, but not great. You might have to remind them of drinks you ordered 15 minutes prior, for example. I would go back, but I'm certainly not rushing to do so, and not keen to do it on my own dime again. I'd FAR prefer to head to Empellon or Oxomoco or ABC Cocina, or even Cosme. read more

I was so excited to try this place. So excited! I had heard the most amazing things, and yet I had a terrible experience from the get go. 1) As befits a hip downtown restaurant, there is no goddamn space. If you think you can sidle up to the bar with a pal for a cocktail, you are mistaken. The tables are a mere hair's breadth away. It is claustrophobic in the worst way. 2) The menu is inscrutable. And I speak Spanish! I sat for a solid 15 minutes googling ingredients on the cocktail list, only to ask the waiter to describe to me in detail every item in the entire food and cocktail menu. This is a bad system! It is purposefully inaccessible and man, I dunno. Some one-liners describing the menu items would do a world of good. 3) The food is mediocre at best. We got the mole and the fish Milanese which were both so bland and tasteless. My friends had to ask for salt. The fish Milanese was literally a fish stick. 4) listen, I'm not the type to complain about price. I like me a bougie dinner. When it comes to food and drink, j am loose with the purse strings. But they are charging $14 for a taco. A singular taco. 1 (one) taco. That's fucking insane. The pro? $200 at Atla saved me from spending $500 at Cosme. read more

So hip the restaurant is barely the point. Reading the drinks menu you could easily miss the food section, but it's there. And there's a fine Mexican kitchen lurking in the back. Very busy place! Small, uncomfortable tables, Cramped, only one bathroom. Unfortunately we were restricted to brunch menu. Had avocado and goat cheese toast. Cherry tomatoes and cilantro. Also had the $15.00 scrambled eggs which were bland and had no discernable flavor other than egg. No sauce, no onion, no cheese, nada. I looked at the plate and asked myself: "Are they kidding? The food is super delicious and the mixed drinks were tasty and strong. Since it's so new the service was a bit weird - too attentive and all over the place. I was under the impression that this was going to be an after works casual drink/bite spot and I think the price point is way too high for that. Overall a so-so experience. The vibe is pretty cool and the wait staff is super friendly. However the prices are steep relative to similar spots in the area and the portions are small. I went to Atla one week ago with my family. I ordered a glass of wine when I arrived, and they give me the wine 30 minutes after I ordered it. For the food we waited more than an hour. We knew it was an expensive restaurant before go, but we ordered 3 tacos for $15 each and it was nothing special, and my husband ordered a cheese quesadilla with avocado and chicken, total around $22, and it tasted like baby food. It was a really bad experience in service and food. The management also very poor. I don't now how this place is still open. read more

What a delicious new spot!! My friend invited me for lunch and we got a table inside after waiting about 15 minutes. The tables are small and a bit compact but the food is extremely tasty and not overly greasy like some Mexican spots. I loved that they had a lot of non dairy options which is usually difficult to find for good Mexican food. I ordered the avocado dip with radish which has been by far my favorite dish of my entire trip! The olive oil placed in the middle is so tasty and the radish gave the perfect crunch. Overall: dishes need explanations, food is quite bland, service is non existent, and portions are quite small for the price you are paying. 1. You need much better descriptions of each plate on your menu. Both my sister and i speak pretty decent spanish and eat our way through cities across the globe. The fact it took both of us a combined effort and 20 mins of searching descriptions online to understand your dish is ridiculous. 2. When you ask the sever what the "not to miss dishes are," it is unacceptable to have a response of "well i don't really know what is not to be missed but i can tell you what i like" 3. The food was absolutely overpriced for the portion sizes. That being said, the good was quite bland and we ended up not eating half of our dishes. It pains me to write this review. Our heart goes out for everyone impacted by this pandemic, particularly those in the hospitality industry. We have been trying to do our best to help - buying gift cards, ordering in, going out, tipping generously. At Atla we received one of the worst service experiences. One server catering probably 40 people, who's busy chatting to a group of girls and couldn't care less about checking in with customers. This place does not take reservations and does not have a phone (???) so be prepared to put your name down and wait. Got there at 7:30 on a weekday night and it was a 1h15m wait. Usually this would be too long for me to wait for food but I came early anticipating it given the hype around this place. Got: Guacamole ($14). Very tasty, appreciates the mint and the giant chip, but was kind of pricey given how much guac there was. Fish Milanese ($18). Really excellent. Crisp on the outside, fresh on the inside, can't go wrong with this one. Arctic char tostada ($16). My dining partner got this and said it was excellent. Having been to Atla's sister restaurant Cosme I was excited to try it. Atla did not disappoint. I went for Sunday lunch, here's what I had: The concha- if you're unfamiliar it's a lightly sweet bread. This one had a lovely vanilla & lemon flavor with a heavenly cake meets bread texture. Chicken Soup- just like the traditional, a light refined chicken broth with white rice, lots of chicken, carrots, avocado, zucchini and seranno peppers for heat. For $17 it's not cheap but it was totally filling and a perfect meal. Cafe con leche with coconut milk - silky and sweet Beyond the food Atla is a lovely space with a minimal but inviting decor. There are nods to Mexico without hitting you over head. Highly recommend! read more

Food is interesting and tasty, but not worth the hype and $. Servers aren't so hospitable. Have attitude probs.

Overpriced. Underwhelmed. Disappointment. Two people, $200 later and we left hungry. Totally not worth it.

Food is good(5), but unfortunately it's very expensive and the service was absolutely terrible (1). We won't be returning. This review is primarily based on the service and our overall experience. Our server was often difficult to find and left (as in ended his shift) halfway through our meal without mentioning anything to us or passing us on to another person (we saw him leave the restaurant and then sit at the bar for a bit with his coat on). We came here for my birthday and they made no acknowledgement of the special event. We weren't looking for anything free, but a "happy birthday" or a table that wasn't right in the center of the restaurant would've been nice (speaking of which, the tables are some of the most uncomfortable chairs we've ever sit in). Ultimately, food quality is not good enough to compenaate for the lack of service and high cost of the meal. Save yourself the trouble and go someplace else. read more
