I was a bit hesitant to go here for brunch after seeing disappointing reviews but I'm glad I did. I thought the food was quite delicious and the service was great. I would go back again just to mix things up but I would by no means call it one of my favorite brunch spots. My friend and I were seated promptly although the place got busy pretty fast. I had the ranchero eggs and my friend and I split the split pea tlacoyos (no pun intended!). I liked both the entrees. I think living in Manhattan we're spoiled for options so it's hard to get a 5-star out of me. I also don't like that they don't have a brunch special. I made an account just to review this place so that people maybe reconsider before wasting their money. Atla is bizarre. I came here several months ago for breakfast when they still had their guacamole toast, which was a treasure. It also was a complete meal - big toast, goat cheese, guacamole, cherry tomatoes, and herbs and stuff - a concept that Atla does not do well with. I could not figure out from the menu how to order an actual meal and my waiter was more condescending than helpful. Too much of the menu is not so much tapas as single-ingredient dishes that are meant to share but also don't stand on their own. You can get, for example, guacamole for $18, a big salad of exclusively greens for $16, an enormous bowl of mushrooms for $24. What are you supposed to do with an entire bowl of just mushrooms? It comes with four tiny tortillas so that you can make tacos out of maybe 30% of the mushrooms, after that you're on your own. Also the taste was totally lackluster. The pork belly tacos are great - if I was planning to go back I'd just get a couple of those - but other dishes require add-ons that are an extra cost. To get chicken, a poached egg, or avocado with anything is extra. If I had gotten a couple of those things to add to my mushroom bowl I would have had an actual meal. The menu needs to clarify what you're actually ordering. Or at least the waiters need to give you a heads up. I was excited at the different milks you can get for a cafe con leche and tried the chestnut one - I can't believe they are willing to serve this. Atmosphere is great, strong margs, and more on the side of, what I feel would be sharable food portions. I had the scallops, small portion, but lots of flavor and my friend got a bowl of the chicken soup which was HUGE! I would recommend hitting up the bar and getting a couple things to share. Friendly bartender gave great recommendations that didn't disappoint. Only wish was for more sea bass to cucumber ratio on the black aguachile dish, but one can always dream. Went for brunch, ended up coming back the same day for dinner, because I couldn't eat all the dishes in the menu that caught my attention. Breakfast: Had the concha, and it's amazing, just like in Mexico, including the orange blossom flavor in the bread. Then shared tlacoyos (authentic, with sour cream, fresh cheese and a "martajada" green salsa) and chilaquiles. Dinner: Shared chicharrón en salsa verde and enchiladas rojas. Both are fantastic. Both salsas are out of this world, as you would expect from an Enrique Olvera restaurant. The red one in particular is unique, thicker and creamier in texture. I also had a mezcal based cocktail that was the perfect companion, and the mango nieve for dessert. Why not 5 stars? Because the portions are indeed very small, and there is no previous warning. At Cosme they make it very clear that you need 3 dishes per person, here they don't. For the price, I would expect slightly larger portions. Nevertheless, the quality of the food is outstanding, service is great, and I can only be thankful to have another Mexican food place executing at this level. Hope they keep it up! read more

2 stars because the gentleman at the door was personable and made every effort to seat us without a reservation. We sat at the bar and thought, this isn't bad at all. The person who helped us was arrogant and useless. I felt like I had to apologize for ordering from him . We did not research the menu so we politely asked for advice which he reluctantly added that he liked everything . Then he mumbled some suggestions managing to leave out that 3 of his 4 suggestions could barely feed 1 person . I love Arctic char , this dish was 4 "wads" of fish that were a little overwhelming in texture and size , unappealing. Multiple smaller portions on pieces of tostado's may have brought out the different flavors and made it possible to share . Cauliflower taco al pastor, very good but a tablespoon size dollop of filling in a shell, "shareable dish"?? $14 for one? I got it, 4 of them would have been perfect! Cecina, was exactly that , salted , dried meat. The guacamole was good. We had a fine meal and loved our server but were shocked at the prices. Two of us shared the guacamole--tasty but basic, the same as anywhere else--and the chilaquiles, which were forgettable. My friend had the mole negro and I had the mole blanco. Mine was inventive if not actually tasty (it was really bland, sort of similar to tahini). But the meal came to $100 each. Yes, $100 each for fine if forgettable Mexican food. The cocktail menu is long but almost completely mezcal and tequila. I get it, it's a Mexican restaurant. But mezcal and tequila are everrrrrywhere for years now, so the limited cocktail offering was disappointing. It's like those restaurants that have a huge beer list and it's 80% IPAs. Really? Still? The space is really beautiful, but it's really small and cramped AF. Your neighbors are sitting right on top of you, the servers barely have enough room to squeeze by bumping into everyone, so all-in-all not a great experience. There's a major disconnect between the pricepoint and the exprience. At the level one expects their dirty appetizer plate to be taken away before the next course, not to be repeatedly bumped into during service, folder paper menus, etc. ABC Cocina is much better--more inventive, a more delightful space and you won't fall out of your chair when the check comes for chips and guac. read more

Came here on Wednesday night at 6:30 and had no trouble getting a table (though it did fill up by 7). The place has great, airy decor though we sat outside. Overall I thought the food was tasty but the service was a bit slow. My favorite dishes were the Arctic char tostadas (great portion of fish!), the quesadilla (simple but had a great light texture and came with delicious sauce - we got it with mushrooms add on and they were quite tasty), and the enchiladas (drenched in green and red sauce. The mole / beans (can't remember the Mexican name on the menu) was an interesting flavor but can't say I loved it. As others mentioned, these are small plates so I would plan for at least 2 per person. read more

I was so excited to try this place after dining at Cosme, where I had an absolutely delicious meal. But I have to say I was pretty disappointed. Our waiter was very nice. We had never heard of any of the wines and he generously let us try 3 of their whites. They all tasted like battery acid. We ordered quite a bit of meats and fish dishes, being 4 of us and we were fairly hungry, with the intention of basically turning everything into a taco. The tortillas were dry and bland. The steak was chewy. The fried fish was fine. The only things that were good were the quesadilla and guac. But let's be real, it's pretty hard to F up those two things. And then, for dessert, the table next to us ordered the churros and we were pretty stoked at how good they looked. They were totally bland too. Sad to say, but this place was no bueno. read more

I was excited to try this restaurant that my friend suggested... he knows I'm a total foodie and it was our first time (4 of us in total). I rarely spend this much time commenting, but bottom line - I question the business ethics of this restaurant and felt compelled to write a review. Many of the dishes were tasty, but the pricing was all over the map - and on the overpriced side. The thing that irked me the most were the drink issues: Tequila: Two of us ordered tequila on the rocks (their house tequila) with a few limes... the menu listed $8. We had a few, and when the bill came, it turned out they charge per ounce and the drinks were actually $16 a piece. What I find absurd is none of the staff pointed this out - it's as if they were trained to NOT tell the customers about this ridiculous policy. It was a very unwelcome surprise when the check arrived. Also, we wanted to order 1 more drink when our final round of food came, but was informed we could not since we were seated outside and they had to break down the tables soon. They did allude that we can go to the bar, order the drinks and bring them out on our own. For a find dining establishment, this is just absurd... the host should have informed us upon check in that this may be an issue. I did end up going to the bar to get a drink and of course my food was cold upon return. Side note, the host was rather unpleasant. Additional food feedback: Arctic Char Tostadas - 3 "pinwheels" of fish on a tiny tostada. very tasty, but very awkward to eat. Also, impossible to share - this is after all a tapas menu has the server explained. Chicken Soup - very tasty, but not particularly shareable with all the broth. It comes with tacos, and they get highly messy when you assemble. Herb Guacamole - beyond overpriced and only comes with 1 big chip.... Ceviche - very tasty, but there was barely any fish - it was mostly cucumbers and pickled onions. Overall, I'm frankly annoyed with this meal and would never recommend this place. Food is amazing, music is fun, people are very nice and always smiling, environment has such a positive energy that you want to stay there forever. Although I wasn't as blown away as the time I visited Olvera's Cosme, I left completely pleased and delighted at the service, atmosphere, and tasty dishes offered at ATLA. My personal favorites were the guacamole, enchiladas, chicharrones in salsa verde, and the pambazo. Although I must say, some dishes were extremely spicy. But that's a matter of taste. For dessert, I learned that they offer very tasty conchas! Soft and scrumptious. Paired with a café de hoya, which needed more sweetness in my opinion. I personally prefer Cosme's selections, but all in all, It was an above average experience, and I would absolutely dine at ATLA again. read more

A few days ago I met a friend for lunch here and after we left I realized that I got overcharged on my bill. I tried to call at least 5 times but nobody answered the phone. I went on their website and I sent an email explaining that I got overcharged. A few hours later, Israel, I think he is the manager, reached out to me asking me what the issue was. I explained to him that I got overcharged by an extra side of mushroom that we didn't order, so I asked him to fix the receipt and credit card charge. He never replied to me so the day after I sent him another email to follow up but still nothing. Well, this is very unprofessional and I highly recommend to everyone to please check your bill before you leave this place. I've been ripped off and I will never come back here. The food is tasty but there are a number of drawbacks: very pricey, the fact that lunch service begins only at 1pm is dumb, and some dishes aren't composed the way I think people would expect -- eg chilaquiles I presume most people would expect with at least a fried egg on top for what they are charging. I ordered a quesadilla that tasted like they took chicken out of soup, put it in some flavorless cheese. Idk how they're allowed to serve that. I tried putting guac in it, still disgusting. This one was hard. But really it deserves one star. I'm sure by the end you'll agree. First, let's start with the good. Our service was great. He was knowledgeable, attentive, responsive. The corn tortillas were decent. And that was about it. We ordered the ceviche, the Fish Milanese, and the pork taco and for drinks we got the Face Plant and The Golden Era. Here's what's wrong with all of them. The ceviche is drenched in acid. Other people seem to say that as well. They don't drain the acid, so the cucumber sits and soaks it all up. Every bite tastes of acid and cucumber and occasionally fluke if you're lucky enough to fish one out. The 20 dollars pays for 5 pieces of (not fresh) fluke and a whole lot of cucumber. But it's not about the price. From that dish on, your entire dinner with will taste of acid. I've had bad dishes. But one that ruins all subsequent dishes? I'm impressed. The fish Milanese was dry. For 24 dollars you get four bites of a breaded fish and a bland cucumber salsa that was more dissapointing than a 30 year-old son working at Walmart. The salsa had no taste. The fish was one dimensional. I wish I had a Lunchable instead. The pork taco is a 12 dollar taco with mediocre pork belly. Honestly there's so many good places with pork belly in NYC, this was a rude reminder that someone could actually do it poorly. The face plant had no taste. For a green chatreuse drink, that's actually so impressive. That's like making tasteless chocolate. An unfunny Tina Fey. A colorless pink. The golden Era is aight. So 100 bucks later, I wonder if I walked into an extensive practical joke. You only get one dinner a night, please don't waste it here. read more

my first time at this place was today. i had the tacos- all of them. my favorite one was the shrimp one but they all pleased me exceptionally. i can't lie, the best part about being at atla was definitely the....everything? ugh. but *especially* the service and ambiance. i sat at the bar with my friend for my birthday and the bartender- andrea was out of this world. she was attentive, knowledgeable (about their extensive mezcal collection), and completely down to earth/fun. it made my birthday. the ambiance was truly my vibe i loovveeeeeeee plants and they were everywhere so it just made it *that* much better. great experience. 10/10 instead of 5/5. read more

i walk by this place morning and evening 4 days a week since my office is a block up Lafayette. I like good architecture and I enjoyed seeing the development of this building as well as the Selldorf designed one next door. Bond Street has some very interesting architecture. i was curious to see what would open here. Every night it seems to be quite the happening place with a good vibe, so I decided to try it for lunch. My friend and i were seated right away. I had enchiladas that were fantastic and my friend had an avocado/pomodoro open faced sandwich that also looked great. This is my 3rd or 4th time back to Atla. The ESL is one of the best drinks I've had in Manhattan and the enchiladas are the best enchiladas I've ever had (and I'm from Los Angeles!) I loved trying both the sauces with the enchiladas but liked the green sauce most. However, what made our experience most memorable was our waiter Ariel. I was with my friend who is a picky eater. She thought the guacamole was too salty and Ariel handled the situation like a gem. He couldn't have been more nice or lovely. He really made a difference to our evening. The cost of a single a-la-carte taco ($14-16) at ATLA is absolutely mind boggling. I would love to see the cost breakdown on how a single taco could possibly cost this much unless the pigs were fed gold. Additionally, we expected overpriced ($17) margaritas, but they came half full and were 80% ice. Our meal was interrupted by a downpour of rain and we had to abandon part of our meal. When we tried to move inside, the staff resisted even though there were tables available. There never once was an offer to bring out some of the dishes that were destroyed by the storm or to replace our drinks that we "lost" outside. I don't see how I could come back unless there are sweeping changes. This is not a top-notch restaurant or food experience -- despite the menu pricing suggesting so. read more

We arrived 13 minutes before our reservation at 8pm. We waited about 5 minutes to be greeted only to be told they were not taking reservations for 8pm yet. In a very dismissive manner. There was no name taken down so the host had no idea who we were or which reservation was ours. We patiently waited until 8pm for some sort of acknowledgement. There was none. As we had plenty of time to stand by the door and observe, we noticed that nearly the entire restaurant had drinks but no food on the tables. So we left. I live in the neighborhood and go to atla about once a week. Drinks are good, food is delicious but pricy. Where do the stars start coming off? Service. Almost every time I go there more than one waiter comes around to repeat their memorized opening lines unenthusiastically. Many of them have an attitude I might be OK w at a local diner but not paying this price. And now twice my order has been incorrect and the reaction to the mishaps have left me unimpressed. Once, I asked for lobster salpicon without hot peppers at the request of my friend (to which the server verbally confirmed), it came abundant with peppers. Luckily, my friend just picked them off. In my opinion, the server should have offered to send out a replacement without peppers. Another time, I ordered red chilaquiles. They sent over green chilaquiles and I notified them immediately. My companion ate very slowly to be polite but was still done before my dish arrived. Both times no comps or anything but a quick sorry. Asked a server to list the ingredients in a menu item for me once. They did not mention dairy and did not ask if I had any food allergies. I was asking to gauge if there was dairy in the dish and there was crema but not mentioned when I asked. The few times I've asked about menu items the servers do not give ample description. There was an instance where I asked about a menu item and the server read the menu description to me. Yeah, I can read, thanks for condescending to me. If you've been there you know the menu descriptions are sparse and many ingredients are omitted from the descriptions. Bartenders provide better service but who wants to have a $200 dinner on a stool just because they hire servers who act as if they lack any type of fine dining experience? Because of the service, once I move and it's no longer convenient for me to frequent, I will not go out of my way to go. Hire better or train better or manage better. read more

Stumbled upon this place at 9:15am on a Thursday. It's was complete empty. The design of everything from the logo to the interior drew me in. I only usually yelp things when they are really bad or really great. This place was the perfect place at the perfect time. Order the avocado toast and ask for a runny egg on top. Possibly the worst dining experience I've had in over 30 years in NYC. From start to finish, this seemingly trendy place served up the worst food accompanied by terrible service at a huge price. From being sat at a tiny table with the rumps of clientele on bar stools in your face, having to find a waiter to provide service, to being served the wrong order, the makings of a ruined meal were established. The food itself was mediocre. Enfrijoladas turned out to be a small corn tortilla with a bit of ricotta drowned in a sea of mildly spiced black bean paste. The tlayuda turned out to be a wafer thin piece of burnt tortilla covered in a packet of mixed greens with mayonnaise amongst which were hidden a few pieces of cauliflower, tasteless chicken and unripe avocado. The prawns were large & undercooked(a hard feat) & the 'yellow fish' was tasteless lying in an oily mix of chillie pepper flakes. This place is filled with people who want to be seen, not heard & don't care about food. Olivera is having a laugh at the great expense of oblivious New Yorkers. read more
