We've been reluctant to post a review, because the staffers we dealt with on day one were stellar and we'd hate for one person to be a poor reflection on an entire company. BUT... On our second day, we had the misfortune of dealing with an instructor called 'Dave.' After 40 minutes with this boorish oaf, three of us were literally considering jumping into the Hudson and swimming for shore. An angry demeanor coupled with terrible jokes and an overall sense of self-importance RUINED this experience for us. We are continuing our sailing education, but doing it with another company, and I would seriously advise anyone else to do the same. Insult to injury, Atlantic had the gall to solicit tips for its staff a fews days later- which we PAID, so the rest of the crew wouldn't suffer as a result of one guy's horrible behavior. And it was truly horrible-- insulting students who had paid to be there and were now stuck on a boat with him. Never, ever again. read more

What an amazing experience. Being our first time we opted for the more familiar scenes of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. We avoided the crowds and did something pretty unique for visitors to New York. The 42' sailboat was very comfortable and we brought Rose wine and light snacks to enjoy along the way. David and Mariette provided great hospitality and fun conversation during our sail. On a weekend that included visiting the 9/11 Memorial and seeing Hamilton, I'd put this experience as one of the best things to do in New York. read more

I took the Basic Keelboat course (with ASA 101 certification) in early May 2018 and would recommend this school without reservations. The upriver location on 79th St. is a nice alternative to the many schools crowded around lower Manhattan and New Jersey. The onboarding process is organized, with regular email correspondence leading up to the first day of class, and I received my educational materials well ahead of time in order to review and learn some basics and vocabulary beforehand. The class itself was well taught and blended theory with practice very well. We spent well over half of the weekend out on the water. Our instructor was organized, thorough and patient, and he put a lot of confidence in his students. The sailboats the school uses for 101 are particularly well-suited to learning and I feel that I progressed a great deal in the first course, learning a wide range of techniques, knots, safety information and vocabulary. In short, it was a productive weekend on the water and a great way to learn the basics of a sport that you can enjoy for a lifetime. read more

Had an awesome time on the 2 hour private charter - what a great way to do something special! The boat was beautiful and clean. The Captain and First Mate were excellent. It was a luxuriant day at sea. We 'parked' a few hundred feet from the Statute of Liberty and had a full view of her while enjoying lunch and drinks elegantly brought to us by the First Mate Jamie. The trip was 'smooth sailing' as you can either have the boat operate by quiet engine or use the sails if the wind is strong enough. This is good living!! read more

My wife and I have taken two ASA courses with Atlantic Yachting. Both experiences were excellent. We found our instructors to be knowledgeable, patient and engaging. They allowed each student plenty of opportunity to practice the concepts of sailing and never seemed stressed. They were calm and collected when offering critiques while we practiced our new skills. The instructor, in our case Johnathan both times, introduced the concepts of sailing throughout the weekend at a pace that felt natural and timely. Just as important, they help create a camaraderie amongst the students that makes the two days fun and welcoming. It's a very relaxing learning experience in a highly engaging format, sailing in the shadow of one of the most amazing, iconic and busy cities in the world. You are made to feel welcome the moment you arrive at the boat and they work hard to make you feel that they are there exclusively to help you learn to sail. I took the ASA 101 sailing course which is a 2-day theory and practical sailing lesson and test. I can't recommend it highly enough if you're just learning to sail or even a complete beginner. Dave and Eric were both great instructors - you have to cover a lot of information over the course of the 2 days but they kept it light, engaging and interactive, which made it much easier to learn and enjoy the learning experience itself. You're provided with the official ASA Basics of Sailing book prior to the course, and I would recommend reading it from front-to-back to get the most out of the course once it begins. If you don't, all of the sailing terminology and 'rules of the road' that you will learn in person could become a little overwhelming if you don't have some level of familiarity beforehand. The organization on the day was pretty seamless, the instructors' approach and teaching styles were very welcoming and inclusive, and they are very experienced in what they do. Go prepared with all the things they recommend (water, sunscreen, appropriate clothing etc.) and you'll have a great time while learning a new skill. read more

We charted a private sail with Atlantic Yachting this past Saturday and had a really wonderful experience. It was an unusually windy day, but our captain told us right up front that we might experience choppy conditions and gave us a couple of options for sailing upwind and thereby avoiding the worst of it. Once we got on the water, they did a great job of sailing the boat smoothly and avoiding the worst of the wind. The boat was clean and beautiful and the captain and mate we so accommodating and kind. We had engagement photos taken on the sailboat, and they came out FANTASTIC despite the wind conditions. It was really a wonderful experience. I would recommend Atlantic Yachting very highly. read more

100% worth the money, hands down no question. If on the fence, TAKE A SAILING CLASS!!!!! The instructors are super friendly and approachable, they do an excellent job to create an active, everyone participates environment. Even the folks who have had bad boating or other water experiences in my class gained confidence and felt completely at ease. Special shout outs to instructors Eric, Thomas, and John who were all 10/10 in making us feel comfortable and on the path to success. PS the certificate sailing test at the end is multiple choice, no matter how anxious you are about it, YOU WILL PASS WITH FLYING COLORS! A friend and I rejected Monday by sailing today on a private charter on the Go Lightly - a beautiful classic French Sloop owned by the clever fellows of Atlantic Yachting. Our captain Robert was first class all the way. I have some sailing experience, and he was incredibly professional and personable - and made sure we had a great time. We really just wanted to chill on the boat and talk and enjoy the scenery and relax and he tuned it to that immediately, and sat up the cushions for us and checked on us frequently to make sure we were set with beverages. We sailed North on the Hudson for the incredible views, then flew back under sail with a beautiful wind, sun, and the incredible energy only the water can bring. I'm booking my next sail asap and couldn't recommend a more magical NY experience. Thanks Miles and thanks Robert, and also to the great skip on the boat. read more

I did a two day basic keelboat sailing course over the weekend: on Saturday morning I didn't know anything about sailing and had never tried it in my life, by Sunday evening I already had a few hours of actual sailing practice, knew all (well, almost all) the needed sailing terminology and passed the ASA 101 certification test! :)) our instructors Dave and Conor were great! I will definitely continue with Atlantic yachting for my further sailing practice! The only advice to the beginners like me - try to read at least something from the ASA book that will be sent to you via mail, it will help you a lot on the first day! read more

It took months of searching online to find this place, but it has been perfect for my needs. For some reason it escaped all my attempts to find an opportunity to sail on an ad hoc basis, without having to pay thousands of dollars to join a club and the constant hassle of trying to get on a crew ... maybe because it doesn't have "sail" in its name and it appears yelp doesn't allow sailing specifically (instead of 'boating') as a category. They have "practice sails," which are exactly what I wanted - to be easily able to sail, on a one-off basis, when convenient for me. It's a two-page web form that takes two seconds to complete, and then you just show up. I suggest that the company promote the "practice sail" program more prominently on the website, including adding a tab for it at the menu at top. As far as I've been able to find, it's a unique offering in the area, and should be shown off more! The website doesn't really seem to characterize it as a teaching situation. In fact, when I first contacted them about it, they made it a point to say that it's not a lesson and that I'd better already know how to sail. But every time I've been, it's always been with the same person, who has been not only super encouraging, sweet, funny, and just generally cool, but has tirelessly and generously provided non-stop experience, instruction, and explanations about rigging, leaving the dock, docking, steering, sheeting, trimming, safety, light and horn signals...you name it. I wasn't expecting that but I appreciate it hugely. TIP: Be careful as you cross the concrete path from the boat basin cafe wall to the dock gate. For some reason, in this particular spot, the passing bicyclists are psychotically hostile. They seem to be actually AIMING to hit pedestrians, at top speed. read more

Had an amazing time on the Basic Keelboat 101 course led by Jonathan. Very professional and well-organized teaching of all the major subjects: rigging, docking, hoisting sails, knots, jibing and tacking, and rescuing crew overboard. With all of our hands-on practice and use of the sailing terminology we passed our certification easily. By the second day, we were able to rig up, leave dock, hoist, sail around, and return with very little management! Highly recommended for any complete novice. I book a 2 hr sail for a proposal on Mother's Day, for my wife. I emailed Caroline the details and plans for my sail, she said she would let the crew know. I had surprise guess arrive early, about 5-10 mins apart from when my wife and I was to arrive. The amaZing crew, Jonathan and Mariette was able to get my guest, hide them, set up the boat the way I asked, got the music going and boom, everything fell perfectly into place. As we enjoyed the 2 hour sail Jonathan and Mariette provided the best service, we didn't have to ask for anything, they were one step ahead of everything. I loved it, because I didn't speak to anyone on the phone. It was all done via email, and for it to be such an important and intimate occasion. They nailed it, they came thru for me. The instructor Eric was very knowledgeable and even taught us about Bernoulli's principle and the Venturi effect (at the crew's request). I took a sailing 103 course this weekend and it was a phenomenal experience. The instructors - Jonathan and Logan - were very professional, friendly and entertaining. The boat was a 43 ft yacht, my first time experience at the help of the boat this size. The weekend was very intense, had to study for the exam too, but the overall experience was super positive. We had long practices both sailing and motoring to help chartering your own boat in the future. If you love sailing or starting to love it, definitely worth pursuing here.
