I received excellent service from Atlas. My furnace stopped working the first week of January -- bad time of year to be without heat -- and when I called I was able to get an appointment for three days later. Raymond was the Atlas technician who came to my house, found the problem and replaced the pilot assembly and pilot tube. Raymond was efficient and friendly and made the whole experience a pleasure. Sometimes tradesmen can be gruff and not friendly. Raymond is the antidote to that experience. read more

Had a pump burn out on a 12 year furnace that Atlas had installed. Technician came on time, did a efficient diagnosis, had a replacement pump on the truck and 30 minutes later that job was done, and Aaron even re wired so that a back up is in place in case of future pump failure. Aaron is an excellent tech, very well trained in his Air Force career, and I appreciate his work. Once again, Atlas was top flight! read more

We were in the market for a new AC and furnace. We got a few quotes and eventually went with Atlas. They helped up get a 2500$ rebate from the state, no other company even mentioned that. They came every morning worked hard all day and left the house cleaner than when they came. Very friendly, very professional. It was like they weren't even in the house. Not many heating companies get repeat business. When we bought our Oakland home in 1988, Atlas Heating removed the old gravity furnace that had served the house for nearly 60 years and installed a new forced air unit. The work that was done then was great. Fast forward three decades. Just before Thanksgiving we were faced with either repairing or replacing our furnace again. One call to Atlas and a meeting with Fletcher Tyler made the decision easy. Having recently researched furnaces for other family members I knew what to expect both quality-wise and price-wise. Fletcher provided a short range of options and prices that led to a quick decision to have Atlas install a replacement furnace. What was once a very good company has become one of the worst. Tried to schedule service and some additions to our air conditioner system that they had installed and they didn't even return my calls. One service person who came out initially told us that our system was not working because it was too hot. Evidently they don't believe that air conditioners were meant to cool us down. We once thought Atlas was a good company but whatever had changed has rendered them inefficient and unreliable. Will never use them again. read more

My furnace was failing intermittently and I was referred to Atlas Heating by the company that installed the furnace. I could not be happier with their work. On the first visit they did a full maintenance visit and returned a few days later to replace a part that was leaking. The intermittent problem continued however and they returned a third time and narrowed the cause to an inexpensive switch and an expensive control panel. They ordered both but only replaced the switch which solved the problem and they returned the unopened control panel they had ordered. read more

Atlas installed our furnace in 1999, and we trust them completely to give honest and accurate advice. We had gotten a Living Social duct cleaning from a different company for a really cheap price. That company told us that our furnace needed reconditioning that would cost $640. They were going to give us a deal and only charge us $530 at the time of the vent cleaning. What a scam! We were worried, since there was a seven year lapse since the last tune-up by Atlas. We called Atlas and Paul S. came to check on the condition of our furnace. He was fantastic, checked every part and told us that our furnace is in great shape. He also gave us great information about thermostats and filters. He is the best, honest and professional. I thought I reviewed them a year ago after they put a ducted electric heating system in my old home in San Francisco. They--specifically Chris, the co-owner-- were wonderfully clear and communicative about the options, steering me away from what I thought I needed to what he knew would work, and did a great job installing the system and working with the eccentricities of an old multi-unit building, and consulting me about choices as they arose. The workers were gracious and a pleasure to have on the premises, and a year later the system is working great. I recommend them highly. They have serviced our 1930s gravity furnace since 1980 and never tried to sell us a replacement, even when we asked if we should trade-in. Altas is very thorough and honest. Another HVAC company based in Walnut Creek told us our A/C could start a fire and the furnace could go out anytime. Without charging me, Atlas sent two technicians to inspect our system. They spent more than two hours looking for flaws or worn-out parts. Their conclusion was that our A/C was correctly diagnosed, but the furnace could last for another ten years. Their analysis was backed up by a third company. Hats-off to Atlas. read more

Contacted Atlas last week after I heard what seemed to be a leak or dripping sound in the heater. A serviceman was able to fit us into his schedule that same day. He opened the heater and inspected it very carefully and found the source of the sound. Thank goodness, it was a minor problem which he quickly fixed and also gave us useful tips in case the sound ever came back in the future. read more

Our furnace was working great this winter... and then it wasn't. It still made some noise, but the main fan never kicked in, and it wasn't heating up our place. I called up Atlas, and made an appointment for a furnace tech. I originally picked them because I was looking through a Yelp review for a different place: the reviewer said they were unhappy with that place, and ended up calling Atlas, who did a good job. Ian, the furnace tech, arrived right in the middle of the appointment window, and called me about 10 minutes before he showed up. I described the problem, and he said he was hopeful that it might be a relatively simple fix. Our furnace is only accessible through a crawl space, but he went right down there and started to check it out. After just a few minutes, I heard the fan start! A little bit later, Ian came back and said that he tested everything, and the only problem was that the blower fan's starter capacitor was bad. It would be a quick fix as soon as he could get a replacement capacitor of the same type -- which he thought he might be able to do the same day. He called up later on, and said he did have the replacement. Showed up again about ten minutes later, and about 10 minutes after that he was done. We tested the system, and everything is nice and toasty again. Our furnace is getting a little bit old, and we'll probably have to replace it before too long. But, it's nice to be able to get some more use out of it for a few more years. When we do have to finally replace it, I'll definitely be calling Atlas. Five stars because: A) Was able to fix the problem on the same day of the appointment -- that's the main thing, right? B) Price was reasonable. C) Ian was able to test the rest of the system, and let me know that everything else was working fine and looked fine for now. D) Everyone I dealt with was friendly, polite, answered questions no problem. It would have been nicer to get an appointment slightly quicker, but I know this is peak furnace repair season. read more

We had a great experience having our furnace replaced with Atlas Heating and Air Conditioning. A different company originally recommended that our furnace be replaced and we got estimates from a total of three companies. Atlas was reasonably priced. The estimator Keith was very responsive and patiently answered a number of questions about various options. He gave frank assessments about what would be involved in a two-stage furnace, higher-efficiency furnace, central A/C in addition, or a heat pump. The installer Joe arrived right on time, worked all day, clearly explained our new thermostat, and left the work area cleaner than he found it. He also patiently answered my questions about maintenance. We're still waiting to complete the permit and MERS inspection but overall we've had a great experience. read more

My husband and I bought a home in April 2019 and we needed to get a bunch of work done. Atlas is one of the contractors we worked with. Atlas was easy to work with as far as scheduling. They did a great job installing the heater. They were very responsive to any concerns I had. Atlas has come out twice since then. Once they came to adjust the air flow going into different rooms at my request. The second time they came because I noticed an odd smell coming from the heater. It turns out that we just needed to change our filter the second time. Both times Atlas was incredibly accommodating and came out to our house right away. Atlas recently replaced my old furnace and ductwork in my home. The old furnace was 34 years old and had a cracked heat exchanger, among other issues, totally unsalvageable and needed to be replaced. The ducts were in poor shape as well with loose and dirty insulation drooping down in the crawl space beneath my home. I brought a few companies out to give estimates, including the home warranty company's vendor, which would have been mostly covered. Atlas had the best online reviews, and they did a very thorough job, starting with the estimate. Zack Turner built a thermal model of my home, with the layout, dimensions, and materials, in his computer so he could make the best recommendation possible for the system that I would need. Zack was very knowledgeable, friendly, answered all of my questions and gave me an estimate on the spot. I decided to go with Atlas because the consultation went so well and they had the best reviews. Even though the home warranty company would have covered most of my costs if I used another vendor, that company had terrible reviews, horror stories on Yelp, and lied to me about the cost of permits going up, which I confirmed was not true with Oakland permit dept. Because of that, I chose Atlas for their superior reputation, and they worked within my budget, and promised no hassles. Once I agreed to move forward, Atlas sent Zack and Kevin out for a pre-site review. I liked Kevin too, because you could tell he was really experienced, knew what he was doing, and he could explain everything in very direct and simple terms. Kevin even offered to hang my new furnace up and out of the way, unlike my old unit which was in the center of the crawl space, and made it a tangled mess of wires, ducting, and gas lines. Kevin's recommendation made me really happy because it would help me clear and reorganize the crawl space in the long run and put the system in a dry, secure, space, and out of my way. The installation team was a couple of young guys who did a really great job. They got to work removing the old ducts and furnace, and the bolted in the new system, rerouted my gas lines, insulated all the ducts, and I couldn't be happier with the work they did. They even pointed out quite a few concerns with my electrical work and dryer vents that could cause a hazard for me, so I appreciated all of the things they pointed out, which I would not have noticed on my own. The whole team did an outstanding job. I am really pleased with Atlas, and they lived up to their high reputation. read more

I recently had Atlas replace my furnace and and install an air conditioner in my home. Will gave me the estimate, described in detail what work was needed and delivered a very competitive price for the project. He is very detailed oriented, arrived on time(!) and introduced me to his teammate,Josh. The two of them did the work in the time they said they would, cleaned up all of the debris and boxes and left the place cleaner than when they started. I met with numerous companies but in the end I felt most confident with Joey. He pointed out the need for an additional vent and return. However he recommended a smaller unit. Wish I could rate zero stars. I contacted Atlas to fix the mess a contractor made of our HVAC system. The tech that came out was really nice but said it was beyond his scope, so he'd have the owner and one of the owner's sons come out. Well, the owner and one of the sons showed up on the day of mapping my HVAC system. After finishing for the day, the two said they'd have to come back another day to finish. After repeated calls, which were not returned, they never came back. I later ran I to the original tech who'd helped me and mentioned the situation. He was surprised, took down my info, and said they would be in contact. Still didn't hear from them. Atlas, if you didn't want the job, just say so. If it was more complicated than you could handle, at least have the decency to communicate that to the client. read more

Our A/C died during a heat wave. My husband works at home, so we were eager to get the work done ASAP. We called many companies my friends recommended, but none could come for a week or more. I asked them for suggestions and ended up at Atlas. I am not sure if anyone else would have been cheaper, but we were very happy with Atlas. We got a next-day appointment. In addition to being on time, James was very knowledgable. He used his time well. Perhaps best of all, he patiently answered my husband's myriad questions about the work and system maintenance. I read all the great reviews and even had some positive referrals from acquaintances. I called and was able to schedule a convenient appointment. I was calling for air conditioner repair and not a replacement. I made that clear in the call. The technician came out did his tests on air conditioner and the temperature of the air it was sending out to the house. He stated he wasn't going to fix it and that it was not something that could be fixed. He stated the compressor was about to go. The engineer found the problem within 20min and had it fixed with new parts within an hour. I was referred to Atlas by a family friend. Called them to make an appointment for AC service maintenance on Saturday. They told me the cost will be $140 for the AC service maintenance. I asked what kind of services will be performed as part of job, the lady who answered the phone did not know about it. She said one of their technician will call me back later that day to explain about the service, but I did not get any call back from the technician. I figured out maybe because they only open half day on Saturday. On Monday morning I got a call from Atlas and I made an appointment to do the service maintenance. The service appointment was scheduled for friday between 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. I have requested the technician to call me when he was about to arrive, but I did not get any call at all so I had to wait at home for the whole morning. Finally the technician (Chris) arrived around 1:00pm. He replaced the air filter and replaced the batteries of my thermostats. After that he went outside to check the AC unit. He mentioned that the capacitor needed to be replaced and he had the component in his van. He quoted me $250. I told him that I have home warranty and I did not want to replace the component now since it is not broken. I mentioned that when the unit failed it will be covered by my home warranty. He insisted that this kind of wear and tear will not be covered by home warranty. But I know 100% that my home warranty covers the wear and tear. So I rejected his request to replace the unit. He seemed not to happy about it. Later on he tried to sell me the 2 year service maintenance so that I will pay cheaper than $140. But I also declined his offer. I mentioned to him if I am interested I will call the office directly, he told me the price will not be the same. If I purchased through him it will be cheaper. He tried to upsell the services. Note to the business owner: please do not give comission to your technician based on how much services they can sell to the customers but rather reward them based on the quality of service they performed to the customers. So overall I did not have a pleasant experience with Atlas. With the amount that I paid $140 only for about 40 minutes of work. They replaced the air filter (maybe cost about $10 -$15), replaced the batteries of my thermostats (I had to provide my own batteries!) and inspected the AC unit outside. I think it is way overpriced for that kind of job they performed. I can do it myself next time. Will I call them again next time? Definitely not! read more

Great service, but difficult to get an appointment and the scheduling is wonky. We were out of town for a few days and when we came back and turned on the furnace noticed a very strong, very bad, electrical smell. Nervous because we have a 5 month old infant, we turned it off immediately and called Atlas. They said they couldn't come out for 2 weeks, which seemed like a long time without heat (in the cold snap), but I called around and couldn't get another appointment. So we waited, hanging out in the one room with a space heater (the baby's room) for ten days. I then called Atlas to see if any more appointments had opened up, and they said they would get back to me. I didn't hear from them so I assumed nothing was available until our scheduled appointment. On the day of the appointment, I waited until 30 minutes before the close of our window, and when no one came I called Atlas to make sure they hadn't forgotten about us. Apparently, someone had cancelled our appointment when I had called to see if we could get an earlier one! But they were able to send someone right away (which makes me wonder why they couldn't have sent someone 2 weeks earlier), and the very friendly tech was able to replace the capicitor in no time. He was great, and it didn't cost us a fortune as I had feared. We will use them again. read more
