My whole experience from beginning to end was awesome! :-) You don't understand how cool these guys (and girl) are to visit. So I called on the phone Tuesday morning. They answered the phone pretty quick, and very courteous as well, answered all my questions, and were very knowledgeable and upfront. Thursday I made a trip to the store. Easy to find parking, staff is very knowledgeable. I went in to sell some records yesterday, and these guys offered me more than triple what Freakbeat wanted to give me. Atomic's selection is also about 5 times bigger than similar shops. AND you could tell that the customers in Atomic were happy to be there and shop there. Their 50 cents to a dollar section is huge, we're talking boxes and boxes upon boxes of stuff available like has to be over 2000 records to choose from. Just an idea, but if I was filming a music video, or decorating a house/bar/lounge/party and needed these for background art to put on the wall, it would be a major score! Final analysis: awesome place to be at, easy to get to and park, prices are extremely reasonable, and they give you the most money when you need to sell your records. Atomic Records is the shit! Atomic Records is the bomb! Atomic Records rocks! More or less this is what I have heard the last twelve-years or so. So why did it take me so long to go? I can't satisfactorily explain except that it's pretty far from Riverside, especially in traffic. I made a pact though, no, not at the crossroads or anything like that, a pact with myself to have the best stay-cation possible with objective- oriented day trips. Today's objectives involved killing time productively by exploring new parts of LA to facilitate being more streetwise, plus a day for record shopping at familiar, but also new (to me) places. Therefore, Atomic Records landed the second-to-last placement before a Yelp event in Sherman Oaks. I found a great street parking spot nearby, and was delighted to see a Portos Bakery up on the next corner. Entering was an experience! Everywhere, and I mean everywhere, boxes full of records were stacked. Undoubtedly collections recently purchased but unpacked and sorted. No matter, the modest space was full of bins that were full of lovely vinyl. I was pleased to find myself in the second part of the massive jazz section. I could tell immediately that this place is the shit, bomb, and sweet simultaneously! Why? The prices are fair, acceptable even, especially for older collectible titles. Why buy a sometimes inferior sounding digital reissue when you can get the original analog pressing for the same, less, or slightly more? Anyhow, I wanted a rare first pressing of a 1955 record but noticed what seemed like a pressing flaw. I asked one of the guys working and he went to the back and played it for me- playback was through house speakers. Flawless! Despite the looks it tracked beautifully and looked very clean too. Obviously well cared for by the previous owner, and only $17.99. Another gentleman assisted me next. When he saw what I had he went to the back and returned with two more rare first pressings. I probably should have gotten both, but he offered the one I indicated for $25. I am definitely returning! We chatted and exchanged jazz stories, and I learned that they acquire the best collections from pre-imminent people, unnamed, but important. I had to run, but the selection, accessibility and knowledge are why 5-stars are well deserved. read more

Okay, so this Is my first review. I always liked looking up reviews but I have to put in my two cents about Atomic Records. YES, the staff are old men who lack social skills. This was my second time here to buy laserdiscs since they have a good amount. Not sure if they know much about this format. First, there are NO prices on their 300+ discs! First time I went there, I asked someone if they had any horror discs and the owner said he has a box of a few hundred he is sorting through at home and it will take him a few weeks until he sorts them out. He told me that they would be pricier than the selection in the store. (its almost Halloween-go figure) He gave me his card and told me to email him with what I was looking for. Did I get a response...You guessed it. Nope. I came back a second time and he gave me some excuse of why he never emailed me back and why he hasn't stocked them yet. LONG story short, I bought about 10 discs the first time and he just looked at everyone one and made two piles and said, "these are $5 and these are $3." the price he gave me wasn't too bad. I came in this last time and handed him a handful of laserdiscs expecting him to do the $3 and $5 pile. This is what did it for me. He took the stack went in the back to......CHECK ALL THE PRICES ONLINE!! That's record store rule #1 that you don't break! Price your damn merchandise before putting it out. He gave me two piles and said, "these are $5 and these are $10." I simply said "Nope" and walked out. Don't support these elitists. read more

Hello 99 cent section. I went a little nuts in this section. There was just way too much good stuff to not go a little crazy. I also found a few deals on some rarities so I ended up spending a little over $20 for some really great music. The staff are super friendly and it seems like music aficionados shop here. Been coming here since I was a kid it is the best place for cheap cds. Their options are limited in the rock and metal department but when they do get them they don't last very long. I'm probably to blame for that. ;) cds are kept in top condition and so are the dvds and blue rays. They often have the newest releases for half the price unlike amoeba who charges 3 dollars more than buying it new at target. Don't get me wrong I like amoeba, mainly due to their huge variety on everything they sell but atomic records just beats them in service and price. If atomic records had a much bigger store, I don't doubt it could compete againts such a store like amoeba. You can sell cds and dvds here as well, you get more out of here than amoeba would give you, that's a fact. They also sell records, vhs and cassettes for those interested. The staff here is very friendly and helpful and often like having conversations with their customers. They are always smillig and you could tell they love their job. This top notch service is very rare to find now and days let alone a great business like this. read more

large majority of merchandise is your basic generic items you can find basically anywhere. employees are not friendly and very standoffish. it's weird they allow you to go through DVD and CD boxes and then just come up with a price in their head and yet when I went through a vinyl box that was open, pulled some records out they freaked out and would not price anything. He said we're not allowed to go through record boxes. when I was there There was a customer in front of me that was going through a new shipment of vinyl that they were letting him pick out so it's definitely a certain customer base operation where they hold good things for regular customers. I left merchandise and will not return again, I suggest amoeba Music, where everything is priced with a better inventory and more professional employees. read more

The trick with Atomic is to go there requiring zero customer service. Because the only interactions you will have will range from awkward to mildly hostile. If you don't understand conversational English at all you'll come out ok. Or just be capable of blocking out the tedious middle-aged white dude conversations about all the usual record store blah blah blah. If you don't forget that you can find some pretty cool used records there at decent prices and not walk out of there feeling worse for wear. Seriously: wear earbuds and speak with no one. You will NEVER benefit from that conversation. I was in there once and Jeff Garlin, the fat dude from Curb Your Enthusiasm was buying thousands of $ worth of French Jazz vinyl off some list of titles he couldn't even pronounce. The staff there were understandably falling all over him to accommodate his requests. But I couldn't get anyone to even ring up my meager $40 selection that day. Walked out with nothing. I mean: I get it - win/win for Atomic and the Fat Dude. But lose/lose for little old forty dollar me. And again, call it masochism, I was in there 2 weeks ago and I wanted to look at the new arrivals they stack in the back corner. The owners were back there talking with some guy they were apparently lubing up for some large transaction. When I politely asked if I could look at the lps in the corner where these 3 men were standing he told me unsmilingly, "Not now - we're in the middle of a buy." Again: I was gonna drop the massive sum of about $40. And again: I get it. Business is business. But they couldn't slide their scintillating conversation over around two feet? Hope that buy was fuggin' equitable for all involved. I don't feel the need to give them my business anymore and clearly, neither do they REQUIRE my business. So ultimately I walk away with no actual grudge, but I the direction I walk is definitely away. Win/win for Atomic and the Fat Dude. read more

I love this place: great selection of records and if you get in good with the owners, they tend to pull stuff out of the back and give you a decent price on them. Amazing selection of 50c dvds and blues and jazz records as well. With that being said. The vibe here and the customer service is terrible. Most of the time and 3 men working here, including the owners are in terrible moods and most often overworked. It's very obvious. Don't bother asking questions or advice on a record, if you do, they make you feel like a "nube". It's a great place though, good location and amazing selection. My advice would be to look through unlabeled boxes and bins and under the shelves and get out without too much conversion. Happy hunting ... read more

Great selection of vinyl albums in all genres. Well organized and priced fairly with plenty of surprise bargains. Also, plenty of street parking in the neighborhood, usually right at the front door, which is a huge plus around LA. A couple of small issues I'd love to see changed: The price stickers with nasty adhesive stuck on the album covers - I saw the clerk using lighter fluid to remove the stickers but most people don't want to rub flammable chemicals on their albums. Obviously space is limited so there were boxes of new stock lined up on the floor in front of all the bins in one of the aisles. A potential hazard and a definite hindrance to browsing - probably just a temporary condition during my most recent visit. I'd also like to see them with a better online retail presence, like Discogs and/or ReverbLP. I would definitely find more reasons to stop by the store and they would certainly generate more sales. Bottom line, a great store that I look forward to wasting lots of time and money in. read more

I debated for a while between 4 and 5 stars for this but ultimately chose 5 because... well, the records! What almost gave it a four? The people who work there (one of which may have been the owner), who walk through life with something straddling the line between a blank stare and a frown/scowl. Other reviews mention them not wanting to be there and I second (third? fourth?) that concept. That being said, I don't go to record stores to make friends, I go to buy records (I'm the quiet, antisocial digging-type) - and these records are solid! You have to be patient and allow yourself time, but you will find things and you will spend more than you wanted. I not only love funk and jazz but also love metal, and there are solid records in all those areas (with an especially deep jazz selection). Every time I had something pop in my head ("I wonder if they have any Iron Maiden?" For example) I'd look and boom - they had it (and in Iron maiden's case, ORIGINALS - not the recent picture disc jawns). Again, same with funk and same with jazz. So, go. And allow yourself some time. read more

My only complaint is that over the last few years, everybody finally discovered this hidden gem so now I have to go in early to make sure I get first pic I've been coming here for close to 20 years, and absolutely love it. The DVD's are dirt cheap, selection is always good and being restocked constantly. All the employees are intelligent and friendly. Great little shop! They're cool. Been going for a long time. Just a heads up for new customers, the price stickers they use here are super sticky and hard to remove. And they leave adhesive on the sleeve even after they are removed. Back in the day we didn't really have many options when it came to tags and how adhesive they were, but in 2021 there is really no excuse to use stickers like this. Maybe they bought them in bulk and are still running through 20 year old stock, but for their customers sake, they really should find another source. I am in love with Atomic Records. I'm a bit of a blu-ray/dvd hoarder, but I've been trying to stick to lists of most wanted films - and guess what, Atomic Records has all of them at the absolute cheapest price! I've gotten new blu-rays with slipcovers and the digital code still included for $4.99! I've gotten DVDs I've been looking for everywhere for 50 cents! Everyone working there is delightful and friendly and stock is constantly being replenished. You can go up to the counter with a stack of 10 movies and leave for under $20. Maybe one day I'll branch into their killer record/cd selection, but for now the movies are keeping me fully occupied. read more

Brought a ton of records to sell. Was a customer for many years. There is NO question that my collection of over 500 records was/is worth 5-7k retail in their overall condition. For the record-no pun intended ;)- I have been offered 2500 since this experience already for the collection. I called Atomic before lugging all the boxes there to ask them twice, what percentage they normally pay straight up for records vs what they will sell them for on the floor. They stated twice they pay 50 percent. So I took them all there, confident in knowing my collections condition and value. I was not helped at all on arrival. They have a flimsy door that isn't the easiest to take big boxes in and out of. Once I stacked my boxes in various parts of the store, one of the owners came out and spend about 2 hours going through them. Taking his time in between to talk to some smug elitist jazz record snob that bumped into me twice and didn't apologize etc. Then after all of that ....he's almost done and claims he is at an offer of 550 dollars. I seriously almost threw up in my mouth. I just politely declined, took my records and left just blown away. I'm an obvious rock/metal guy and it's 100 percent clear these guys tried to take advantage of me thinking I'm desperate or stupid. A couple people that work there especially a middle aged woman over the years when I was there as a customer always threw that look down the nose elitist metal head hate vibe at me... But I really thought they would be honest and fair. His offer was 10 percent what they would sell it for and again, I already have an offer of 2500 on the collection so there ya go. read more

Came here to sell some CD's and DVD's. Tried to sell them at Amoeba first but didn't have a good vibe from them and they would only give store credit. Came to Atomic and really dug the vibe when I got there. It didn't feel like the big corporate store at Amoeba is. The guy working there (owner?) was super nice and fair with how much I received for my items. I would definitely come here again when I have stuff to sell. If you don't participate in Record Store Day, then request to be taken off the list they offer. Then, learn some ****ing manners. I called ahead to ask about their participation, and I was cut off, and then I was hung up on while I still kindly thanking them. Found four other stores today to give my support to from now on- three of them not even RSD participants, but they weren't rude about it and still made it a fun day. RSD also represents finding new stores since other local shops are closed down, like the two closest to me, so I had to go find and meet new record shops. Atomic Records has caught my attention since I first moved to the area. Plus, it always reminds me of the movie: "Empire Records". You know the one! With Liv Tyler and Ethan Embry? Okay, okay moving on... Atomic Records is an independent record store without the overabundance of band stickers/posters as the wall decor and more of the exposed brick/venting of record stores one finds in Seattle (yes, I HAVE been to them). The store is very clean, well organized ( CDs, records, DVDs, discounted items, etc are all separate and divided by genre within each sub-group). There are also some great finds (such as unknown folk albums from the 60s-70s or world jazz), 99 cent CDs, and some vinyl from better-known artists; but overall Atomic didn't demonstrate a large amount of unique factor. I have ravaged record stores for many years and in various states with the best record stores being the ones that surprise me with their selection and the goodies they offer. Atomic offers items in excellent visual shape (all vinyl is sold in plastic covers) and at great prices (vinyl can be purchased for as low as $3.99 while there is a 99 cent CD selection); and even though I've made some purchases; not much stands out. Additionally, the sales clerk wasn't very friendly or attentive and couldn't even answer music questions and had to ask someone in the back. Perhaps he is a music snob, I admit to being one so that is acceptable; but he appeared the opposite and not knowledgeable. Basically, Atomic Records is not a bad find and a lovely substitute to larger trendy stores like Amoeba, but not necessarily an "OH MY GOD ! I HAVE TO GO BACK SOON!" type establishment. read more
