The only thing that could have made my night at Au Courant more perfect would have been spending the rest of my night at Au Courant. Truly, from the first step my husband and I took into the door to our final step out, we were in sheer, gluttonous bliss. Let's start with the near instantaneous greeting from the hostess, who saw us come in from afar, immediately stopped what she was doing and welcomed us to the restaurant (you'd think one would get this sort of treatment everywhere, but that just isn't so). As we walked back to our seats, I gazed in awe of the simple yet tasteful, classy look of the place. Our server (shame on me for not remembering her name) was so vibrant, knew the menu inside-out and was incredibly helpful in guiding us through our options. Though we typically go for a craft beer or glass of house wine, we could not pass up the cocktails this time. After heavy deliberation, I selected "The Hip Replacement," and my husband chose the "Life's a Batch," both being Au Courant's house-spun versions of the classic Old Fashioned. At any average cocktail bar, boozy, carefully crafted drinks such as these would have cost upwards of $15 each. At Au Courant, they give you a bargain at $8. Then came our amuses--the Squash and Chovie's Egg. The squash had a slight char and paired so fabulously with the creamy richness of the goat cheese and fresh bite of the basil. Chovie's Egg also had all the things--a crunchy panko-like shell filled with runny egg yolk and topped with crispy bacon and fresh greens. Just as we scraped off any and all remaining tid bits on our share plates, our server brought over our risotto. Cooked al dente and drowning in creamy buttery goodness, the fresh sweet corn mixed in throughout and the earthy truffle garnish rounded off the dish. And just when we thought things couldn't get any better, they freaking did. Approaching us with our final plate in her hand and that look of "Oh, you're gonna like this," our server brought us the Strip--a combination of succulent medium rare beef, buttery mushrooms and the most melt-in-your-mouth bone marrow. We were so enamored that I completely (and regrettably) bypassed taking a photo. I suppose that gives me a good reason to go back and try it again. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. I have to be honest and say that I usually become suspicious about restaurants with huge dishes and small portions, and granted I am skewed about this restaurant's experience because I someone else paid for my entire dinner, but the tastes and textures of the meals were amazing. My favorite was the tortellini with short rib meat inside it. The chef makes the pasta every day and the meat cuts are fresh. The service was amazing and the setting, though a bit too dark for my liking, was appropriate for a quiet conversation with friends. Overall 5/5 place. read more

I took a friend out tonight to celebrate her birthday and we had a wonderful experience. I've been to to all the top spots in Omaha, Mahogany, V. Mertz, Grey Plume, Boiler Room to name a few and some of the top destinations in Vegas, NYC and LA. This ranked up there with some of the best places I've ever eaten. We both had the Chef's Tasting Menu along with wine paring. "Wow" doesn't adequately convey how outstanding the food was. Presentation and flavor were both off the charts. I was dubious of some of the flavor combinations until actually experiencing them. This chef is a true culinary artist. The service was amazing and every glass of wine complimented the course perfectly! If you haven't checked this place out yet, put it on your to-do list. You will not be disappointed! read more

The layering of flavor and texture in each course blew us away. The wine choices were excellent (smaller pours) and paired beautifully with each dish. Highly recommend the pairings: brought out the umami in each one. The choice of wines were interesting too- from different regions all over the world and California. The quality of the ingredients are top-notch. The service was attentive and seamless from our main server, Al to the rest of the staff. Everyone we encountered loved their job and was very committed to making this an exceptional dining experience. My husband and I arrived early and enjoyed a few cocktails at the bar prior to our reservation time. I honestly did not taste a bad drink the entire evening. They are so wonderful! For dinner we decided to go with the tasting menu. It is a great option so that you can try multiple things. Since the menu changes frequently it's difficult to recommend anything specific. However,. The paparadelle with mushrooms and shrimp was out of this world. I also had a cocktail that was absolutely delicious - "smash it up". Great wine selection. I had the skirt steak as an entree. The accompanying salad of heirloom tomatoes was incredible, but the steak was tough and over done. With that being said, I still loved the meal and overall experience. this place is amazing. the food is really executed well with great care. I hesitate to tell anyone about this place because I'm afraid it may be tough to get reservations here. My wife and I got the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairing. Carlos, the owner, really knows his wines and will likely introduce you to wines you never heard of as he did for me. The place is not pretentious and is a great date place. I would say leave the kids at home and treat yourselves. Not so kids friendly so I don't recommend to take little kids for family dinner... I ordered a cocktail off of their regular menu and it was really good. As this is European style, the portion of each food is small compared to big American food. All the food we had looked amazing with detailed decoration and performance (chicken soup, thy pour soup in front of you). I really liked egg too. Go for the wine. Maybe the menu will change... not too many beers to choose from. I think they've done well for themselves in this space. A small menu place that has a little more seating than España did. You do have to watch out if you are a big guy. The seats in the middle have small tables and you feel like a giant. Go when it's not busy. The plates of food were all something we hadn't tried before and surprisingly the wines were all a decent price for a restaurant markup. There were a few things I didn't like about the menu. One being the repetitive use of beets on the menu, (not a big fan). I had the trout and it seemed like it was braised in beets. Lastly, the menu item that said it had sauerkraut involved, didn't have too much sauerkraut that I could see. Can't see it winning me over more than the Sangria at España did, lots of work to do. Food: My friend and I got the carrots, a special they had that evening which involved pasta and trout, and the short ribs. We had all three dishes brought out at different times ~ 10 minutes apart which was fun. While the dishes were a tad small (2/3 of the size I would've preferred) the dishes were loaded with unique, interesting, and complex flavors. The short ribs in particular had a fantastic bone barrow sauce of some kind. It was phenomenal. The prices are reasonable, especially for the smaller plates and pastas. Ambiance: The restaurant is beautiful on the inside and impeccably clean. This would be a great place to come have some drinks or desserts with a significant other or group of friends. Service: Our waitress walked us through the menu and was very informed about all the food items and drinks. I also went through several glasses of water rapid fire and she kept up like a boss! I was really excited to try Au Courant, ever since we attended the pop-up over at Block 16. Having been to many large cities, I love the concept of small plates that are meant for sharing. for the quality of food they are putting it here, it was also priced really well. We ate here on Friday night for my birthday. We each had a cocktail that we really enjoyed. I'm drawing a blank on the specific names of them, but, like I said, we both really enjoyed them. We began with the Tomatoes and the Trout. The tomatoes were creamy and juicy. They also had pickled mushrooms in them, which gave a nice acidic kick to the dish. The trout was very good as well. It was on top of diced golden beets, and topped with roe, which I had never experienced before. I'm definitely glad I branched out of my comfort zone for it. Next, we had the beef tartar, which was incredible. I really like beef tartar in general, but I really feel like they hit this out of the park. It was prepared perfectly! We then went for the Gnocchi, which, might be some of the best gnocchi I've ever had. It was soft and pillowy, just the way gnocchi should be. The pheasant and bacon was a welcome addition to this dish and really rounded it out well. We finished our meal with the strip steak, which was cooked to a PERFECT medium-rare, and extremely well seasoned. The mashed sweet potatoes were the perfect bed for these four pieces of steak. While we didn't do dessert, I would definitely do it next time. All of the desserts sounded amazing. I really hope this concept takes off in Omaha. I know that Heritage Food & Wine started off with this concept, and then moved away from it, as folks didn't really respond well to it, so I'm not going to hold my breath, BUT I'm crossing my fingers they stay with this! This place is definitely worth reviewing because you need to know what you are getting when you go here: not a lot of food (therefore not for those looking for a very hearty meal) and much more thoughtful in their approach. The flavor combination that we got when trying their appetizers and entrees were phenomenal, something I'd highly recommend at least trying once. However, the dessert was pathetic in my opinion - one of the desserts a friend of mine ordered looked like gummy candy squares coated in table sugar; there were four of them on a plate. Do you need some interesting local flavor in your life? Au Courant is the answer to your prayers. Although the name is distinctly non-Nebraskan the menu is packed with Midwestern ingredients cooked to perfection. I came here for a date night and was relieved when I walked into a dimly lit upscale dining room with an open bar in the middle. We chose to push aside the menu and go with the 6 course tasting menu. The waitress informed me that the tasting menu is very fluid and the chefs will change the menu throughout the night. Exciting! Our dinner consisted of schnitzel, beef tartar, a pasta dish, blackened trout, flank steak with short ribs, and a lemon cake with passion fruit ice cream. My favorite dish was the trout followed closely by the tartar. It took us an hour and a half to eat and we were stuffed by the end of it. It was incredible! Every bit of it! The experience brought us back to the quality of the Chicago restaurant scene. The service was great and our check was $141 for two tasting menus and two cocktails. My only complaint is the horrendous parking situation at Benson. I suggest getting there at 5:30 before the crowds appear. read more

FANTASTIC food, great atmosphere and exceptional service! A group of four of us went recently after a raving review from one of our friends and it exceeded all of our expectations tremendously. What I love about this restaurant is that there isn't a "set" menu - it's constantly changing and evolving, mostly depending on what ingredients are in-season or what the chef wants to try out at the time. There's an option on the menu to get four courses for $55 (I can't remember the exact number, but that sounds right). All four of us each got different things each course and all tried one another's.. I'd highly recommend going this route with your party as you get to try a little of everything! The interior is very cozy with dim lighting and rustic furniture. The bar is fantastic and they offer a great cocktail menu and wine selection. Side note: If there is any sort of a beet dish on any of the courses, try it. I don't really even like beets that much, but the beets at Au Courant restored my faith in beets (I never thought I'd be raving about BEETS on a review, but seriously, wow. So good). Dining at Au Courant was a truly special experience, I was completely impressed with the beautifully presented dishes, level of service and amazing food we experienced there. The menu is always changing, but on the Saturday night we dined there we ordered the risotto with squash, the crudo and the strip steak with parsnips, mushrooms and leeks. Everything was excellent, but the strip in particular was great, and it came with leeks prepared two ways, in a puree and as chips. I also had a nice cocktail called Chuck' s cousin Marvin that was really tasty. I believe it had white whiskey and a lemon/blueberry mixture. The somm is well versed and will provide a background and pairing reasoning in detail. The interior is great ... natural wood tables ... quaint bar in the center ... it's put together. Cocktails were well balanced ... and can be ordered at a reduced price if the right time is playing. So mostly good. I mean practically great, but there are a couple of things that are off ... both times the tasting menu took around three hours for six courses. Everyone thought the pacing was too slow. An extra drink and some good convo helps, but shouldn't be the answer. And a few misplatings ... which I'm still not sure how the kitchen lets that one go. I won't even begin to do this place justice in my review. Read other reviews for a more sophisticated take on the menu because I don't do sophistication very well. I'm a fairly simple (some might say simple minded and that's fair) guy who doesn't consider himself a foodie. All I know is that the meal I had at Au Courant was easily one of the top meals I've had in Omaha. The menu is made up of Amuse (one or two bite dishes), Aperitif (who knows? openers, appetizers? Let's go with that), Pasta and Proteins. I ordered the Chicken Soup 'Au Courant' and the duck for my Protein. The soup was outstanding. I mean, having dreams about it good. They brought out the bowl with a chicken breast and the veggies and added the broth at the table. The chicken had a crispy skin yet was moist and flavorful. Oh man, so good. The duck was also very good, great flavor again with a crispy skin on the outside. I dined with work colleagues so I have no pictures to post because, well, taking pictures of your food would be unprofessional in such a setting. But, trust me, it was all very good and everyone else seemed to enjoy their meal too. Our server did a nice job, though I cannot recall his name. The location itself is quite nice with a bar in the middle of the restaurant. I would say that it was not particularly busy this night but it was still a bit loud for conversation. That's OK, talk loudly, which of course adds to the problem. And if you're with a quiet talker, be prepared to read lips. But, it does bring a sense of energy to the place. The menu changes regularly, so it's possible that the soup won't be there if you go at some point. If it is, please do yourself a favor and order it. Seriously. It's amazing. On our latest visit to Au Courant, we sat at the bar, as the place had just opened for the evening. Previously, we'd had table service. Being seated at the bar turned out to be the right choice; our bartender was friendly, provided great service, and engaged us with some wonderful conversation when he wasn't busy mixing drinks for other arriving patrons. As we love to hit multiple places and perform a bit of "grazing" at each, we just got some cocktails and a couple of appetizers. The food was outstanding, but the cocktails were over the top, very tasty, and creatively put together with both an eye for visual appeal, and taste for on the palate delight. This place was just down right fantastic. Everything we ate had amazing flavor. My wife and I met a friend here for dinner on a Friday. I had Chovie's egg which I loved and she had the Carrot, ginger soup which thankfully she let me try and it was off the charts tasty. Next we shared the Tataki, next time I might order 3 of these for myself. On to the main course, my wife had the trout, our friend the chicken and I chose lamb. All 3 were winners. I was impressed with the flavor and what they did with the chickpeas was very tasty. We finished with the small desserts, the PBC, this was just the right size for a sweet not overly indulgent finish to a great meal. I also tried a couple cocktails. The Brass Monkey was a little too sweet for my liking though the Absinthe came thru it nicely. I also tried Breaking the Law which was a little more my style but still a little too sweet. The place has a Grey Plume, Lot 2 vibe, very sustainable and high quality ingredients but the prices felt a little more reasonable. I will be back here for sure, looking forward to trying the tasting menu. They are also very accommodating to food allergies, lots of gluten free options.
