We went to celebrate our anniversary and did the tasting menu with wine pairing. The food was delicious and loved that they were able to do a full vegetarian menu for me. Also loved the pairing with the wine, all choices went great with the dishes. With that being said, definitely think the wine pairing is worth it. My only complaint would be it's not a very intimate setting and there was no mention of our anniversary. I expected it to be a little bit more private or lower lighting since it is fine dining. However, the food was still good and particularly loved the person serving our wine. He was very thorough in answering our questions and overall picked great wines for us. read more

Au Courant is a well-respected upscale restaurant here in Omaha located on the Benson strip. When you step in you'll be welcome with ambient lighting, plants lining the walls giving a fresh feeling to the atmosphere and an eclectic take on "upscale." I had the chef's menu and for my first time doing so, I enjoyed the experience but realized I'm not quite cut out for the boujee life. DRINK : Everyone had their fair share of drinks and after studying and experiencing their reactions, this is the place to BE for a nice drink. They fancy them up in every way, but they also have super fresh ingredients in every drink you'll receive. If you're just going here for drinks, you won't be disappointed. FOOD : Something I love about Au Courant is their willingness to change their dishes to meet your dietary needs - I LOVED that. We started with an appetizing & beautiful charcuterie board layered with fine cheeses, pickled beets and onions scattered throughout, Jams and more. The cheese was top-notch, you could tell it was great quality and it wasn't just some low-grade wholesale cheese. Everything they pair together was brilliant, the flavors always met to make a "melt in your mouth" moment. I didn't have the cheese because I am lactose free, but from the sheer amount of comments it got, I didn't have to try it to know it was incredible. The first plate brought out was one Oyster, and like I said before, having the chef menu or paying more than $14 a plate isn't typically my forte so I'm new to this. It wasn't my favorite, but I'm also a texture person. It felt like I ate a salty squirrel heart, but this was less on their ability and more on the preferences I have. The second plate was "chovy's egg" with pickled radish, green garbanzo sauce, and sesame. This. Was. FIRE. The egg and pickled radish combination tripled with the garbanzo sauce was drool worthy and a powerhouse tri-fecta. I would eat this over and over again. The third plate was rainbow carrots with honeycomb, goat cheese, and Fresno. I had mine with jam because I am no dairy, no gluten, and I actually loved it. I would've never thought to pair it like this, and admire the creativity of the chef. My only qualm was that the carrots were barely cooked so they still had a raw bite to them, but I had a feeling that was intentional & I'm just used to everything cooked through. The fourth plate was a farfalle with asparagus, radicchio, and toasted cream, but for my dietary restrictions I was brought out a risotto. To be honest this wasn't my favorite plate, I am not a huge risotto person and the asparagus was lightly cooked so it still had a bite to it. I just didn't love the mix and gave my stomach a small upset. The fifth plate (dear God.. ANOTHER?! Should've worn sweats) was monkfish! I have never had nor heard of monkfish before, but I'd love to have it again. The fish was fresh and soaked up the surrounding juice nicely. It had a burst of flavor and left me feeling light and ready for more. Great dish! The sixth plate changed my life. Okay maybe not. But .. almost. This was short rib with beet, cabbage, and oxtail. This was the best piece of meat I have EVER had and I geeked out a little. The most immaculate thing I have ever eaten to say the least. It had a sauce on top that gave it a Smokey barbecue flavor with a hint of sweetness, and on the side was a dollop of a beet purée sauce to add even more of a barbecue feel to the plate. I can't tell you enough how incredible this was, and if this alone is on the menu... GET IT! The seventh plate was the dessert finale. Everyone else got the tiramisu and from the review my husband gave, it was good but not life changing. Probably closer to any other tiramisu you'd have. I got a mango sorbet with jam and pistachio crumble and LOVED it. It felt so refreshing to my stomach after how much food I had and the sweetness of the jam, saltiness of the pistachio, and the cool of the sorbet was the perfect way to end my experience! SERVICE : I was the photographer at the event and like most who are in the service industry, it's easy to feel like "the help." However, the entire staff of employees were super kind. I was so encouraged by their hard work and dedication to making this an experience for people and for treating them and serving them the best they can. I felt really taken care of, especially with how they went the extra mile to make every plate unique to my dietary needs. This is definitely not a cheap place to stop in at, but if you're wanting an experience, a meaningful date night, or you just have the money to spend - Au Courant is beautiful, trustworthy, and outdo themselves in every arena. I've been wanting to try Au Courant for quite some time, and seeing as I waited just a hair too long to make my Valentine's reservations, I was happy to see Courant still had some late-night tables open. To start things off, the location was perfect. A Valentine's feast, with an adult entertainment store right across the street? How much better can it get The atmosphere inside the building is fantastic. It plays on the exposed brick/mortar feel you get all over Benson and is just beautiful aesthetically. I love the giant wax towers throughout the restaurant from hundreds of melted candles all slowly dying. Sadly, my girlfriend won't allow me to do the same around the house We did arrive a bit early for our reservation, and were informed that things were running a little behind. No worries, we hit the bar and ordered some drinks. Our drinks at the bar were actually comped, and we were given several glasses of sparkling wine without us breathing a word of complaint. Customer service top notch guys, keep it up. Even without the free drinks we would have no qualms, it's Valentine's, you're slammed, perfectly understandable. Once we were seated, the courses started rolling out. The majority of the dishes and drinks were explain to us, but again, busy night, no worries. I could only assume on a normal business night you get that much better of service and explanations with your food. Now, to the food itself! I've posted the menu for those curious on what it was we ate. I will say the star of the show in my opinion was the pork sugo gnocchi. The gnocchi was flawless, and the pork sugo was richz flavorful, and absolutely delightful. The dessert "dippin dots" were fun and delicious, and I wish I could have left with a stack of the little nougat bites that came out with the bill. Did I mention the Chovys Egg? Recently, a friend recommended a treasure restaurant called Au Courant. After eating there once, I was completely conquered and must give a good compliment to everyone! As soon as I stepped into the restaurant, the elegant and fashionable decoration style instantly caught my eye. The modern minimalist design concept runs through the entire space. After having an outstanding meal at Au Courant over a year ago, I was back in Omaha for a high school reunion and suggested to some friends that we head there for dinner. Everyone was blown away by the quality of the food, and though I admittedly haven't eaten at nearly as many Omaha restaurants as a local foodie would, this restaurant continues to be at the top of my list. Every bite I've ever eaten at Au Courant has been truly delicious, and their pastas are exquisite. Au Courant would stand out in any city in America. You could put it in New York, LA or Chicago, and it would still shine. If you have foodie friends visiting from out of town -- people who are accustomed to eating food at a very high level -- this is the restaurant to take them to in my opinion. If I could have a Chovy's egg every day for the rest of my life I would feel like I won the lottery. We were a party of four and we all did the tasting menu. It was a wonderful experience from the creative crafted cocktails, the culinary excellence and the stellar service. I hyped myself up for this experience, and it exceeded all expectations. If I could go back weekly, I would. Our group settled on making sure we try to go back as many times as possible. Trying one of each seasonal menu is a new goal. If you are doing the tasting menu, I'd recommend having that be your event for the night. Each course gives you something new and exciting. Ok let's get the important things out of the way. Their bathrooms are clean- they use a quality toilet paper and local soap. Now onward to the restaurant and food. It feels like a cozy, hipster place but devoid of pretentious that can come from high end restaurants. Au Courant has been HIGH on my list but for us, it's hard to justify shelling out a small fortune without occasion. Last night we had a reason. As everyone before us had recommended (and likely all the reviews here), do the tasting menu. Unless you're super picky or have dietary restrictions do the tasting menu. Come to think of it, even if you have have those things- do the tasting menu as I've been told they can accommodate. It's hard to specifically comment on the food because it's weekly rotating so I'll comment more on the service and ambiance. You have one designated server, however, everyone works as a team so the person taking your drink order might not be the same bringing it over. We probably have 4-5 different staff members drop off food and each person equally as knowledgeable about the plate they're serving. Many of the items used local ingredients and they could state exactly where specific items came from. I'm most impressed by the beautiful presentation and combining things I would normally not consider go together, but somehow are perfectly married on a dish here. The timing of the dishes coming out was impeccable with just a few minute between servings. Au Courant has ruined me because now I'm constantly wishing I could win the lottery so I could eat here every week...errr every day. The food is a crap shoot sometimes its good sometimes it feels as if they are trying to hard and pulling recipes out of nowhere and the whole thing is just over done, with too much going on etc. Last night had a very bad experience cant say we enjoyed any of the items we ordered of the menu none of it would i recommend. On top of that the place crams clientele in like sardines and the ambiance is rubbing shoulder to shoulder with who is sitting next to you overhearing every loud conversation in the room and being unable to hear your date sitting directly in front of you. Solid tasting menu. The restaurant is quite noisy but the tables are small which helped with being able to have a conversation during our meal. The music wasn't loud, but the walls are stone so conversations echo and make it very loud. The sommelier was great. His enthusiasm for the wine and details about what we were having really enhanced the experience. Of the items that we sampled in the tasting menu most were very good and one was excellent. The egg with their take on elote was very good. I also really liked the bass. The crunchy skin was outstanding. The absolute star of the show however was the beets compressed cantaloupe and root vegetables. It will be a dish that I look back on for some time to come. It was brilliant. The flavor combinations, each bite was a delicious discovery of something new. It was both of our favorite dish of the night. The only disappointment in the lineup was the steak. It looked good but the texture was chewy and oddly dry for how rare it looked. Other than the steak everything else was very good. Another dynamite meal in Benson! I brought some Seattle people and they were impressed with the oysters (thus encouraging me to try oysters for the first time ever!) Our experience started with delightful and aesthetically pleasing cocktails, which then moved into oysters for the table, then Chovy's egg for the table, and we kept going, adding 2 plates of beets (the beet goes....on!) 3 plates of pasta, 2 protein options and 3 desserts. For context, I was visiting from Dallas, so maybe I'm some big-city snob, or maybe I've just experienced much more impressive tasting menus, haha. I didn't pay for the meal, so none of my disappointment is based on feeling ripped off, although I surely would have felt that way had I handled the check. We started with cocktails, then did the tasting menu (the only option right now due to COVID) with wine pairings. The cocktails and the wine pairings were fine but nothing to write home about, and honestly most of the meal was the same. The one dish that really shone was a pheasant croquette dish; the others were honestly so forgettable that now, just three weeks later, I'm having a hard time remembering what they were. Servings were so small that we were still hungry after dinner and ended up going to nearby Ika Ramen for dumplings afterward. Nothing was bad, but nothing other than the croquette dish was stunningly delicious, either. So, all-in-all, it just didn't meet the bar for a fancy, expensive, tasting menu meal. read more

This is my favorite spot to dine in all of Omaha! This place has EVERYTHING, the ambiance, the most creative food pairings, and exquisite cocktails. We ordered a couple cocktails when we first arrived. The Coffee and Cigarettes cocktail had mor emphasis on the coffee and is perfect Tun lovers who like simple but complex drinks. The Coconut is perfect for someone who has a sweet tooth and is looking for a creamy drink. The Chai Your Heart out is perfect for people who love chai tea and lots of nutmeg. When you come to this restaurant, you can always order their amazing entrees, but you really need to try their tasting menu. You get the opportunity to try small portions of 7-9 plates ranging from small starters to desserts. Each dish continuities to top the last. I love the Chovy's egg rotation (each week, the chef tries a different soft boiled egg recipe) with sweet potatoes, bacon and golden raisins cooked to perfection. Each time, the pasta dish always seems to be our top pick of the night. The black truffle gnocchi was out of this world. The staff explains the breakdown of each dish which I appreciated as there were so many ingredientes I had never heard of. They like to locally source their food which I also loved. It's my birthday. Love to announce it! That's also the reason why my gf brought me here. We had our share of KS BBQ but figured I deserved to be wined and dined without using my hands as utensils. The dilemma was between Chefs Pick tasting menu or a la carte. Ultimate we went with a la carte since the menu sounded delicious and the chefs picks was not listed which was a little iffy. They really should list the 5 courses. We sort of noticed afterwards that the chefs picks were the same items as the menu. Not all but at least the Chovie's egg and strip were part of it. First, I treated my sober liver to the Yellow Mellow $9 (Tito's, Strega, St. Germaine, lemon, ginger beer) which is a twist on the Moscow Mule. It was really mellow, I could've gone without it. But oh well. Once a year, I raise my LFTs with a few drops of alcohol, make sure those enzymes are alive. 1-CHOVIE'S EGG $3. Who is Chovie and why are we eating his/her/its egg? Anyway, it was eggcellent. Simple but the best part were the beets, the bacon and the tomato, meaning, everything that surrounded Chovie. His/Her egg. Thick chunk of bacon, really nicely fried, the beets oh so tarty. 2- Carpaccio $15. Fresh, yes. So nicely sliced but hold on. That was a whole lotta ginger. And hello? I am Asian and even for me, the ginger was way too spicy for it. I wish they had toned it down a beet. The garlic chips were fun though. 3- Risotto $13. Okay, a bit too much goat cheese here. I know I know, it is not for everyone. Not the best dish this night. Weirdly, we finished the whole thing. The rice was too nice to leave (and so creamy) 4- Strip $27. This was a bit pricy for the 2 chunks of beef we got. But they were WOW. Really really good. Just the right amount, and no, they won't ask you how you want it cooked. Just take it in your mouth and enjoy it. Don't forget to slather some of that glorious onion au jus in each bite. So again, it is my birthday! and I ordered the Dark Chocolate dessert $8 and LORD JESUS behold, this was perfection. You will not get a piece cake or a slice of nothing with a few drops of syrup and a fake flower on it...this was a beautiful forest of dark chocolate (ganache?) so rich, so pretty, with crushed gorgeous pistachio nuts surrounding it and pools of cherry sauce. Oh, and it was comped *insert heart sign* Thank you. Romantic dinner done right. Food was good, not the best i've had but very good. Didn't think Omaha had it in it. Parking, ridiculous and difficult. Go far and don't look back. Inside, SO LOUD, that would be my main complain. The echoes of all the people talking goes nowhere but your eardrums. Our fifth visit: Some hits, some misses at a restaurant we loved. We returned for a special meal that was not up to our previous high ratings. Some basic fine dining experiences still need to be worked out. We're not snobbish foodies but we have dined at several high end restaurants including Beard and Michelin honorees. Unfortunately, some basics are (still) missing the mark. I will only mention the more obvious misses. Overall, the staff still needs training and this was important and disappointing. Everyone should be welcomed warmly from the door to the finish as we are your Guests. We were there nearly two and a half long hours. The room is still noisy. I understand the difficulties and expenses of adding acoustic improvements for that space. However, the front of the house staff should understand the noise and be trained to speak slower and more clearly. What's the rush? Clarity is particularly important when describing the dishes of a six course tasting menu and speak to the table of guests. Our servers or staff, of the several who brought or removed plates, rarely asked both of us the standard questions about enjoying the dish or our needs. At least look toward all the guests before leaving. After one particularly disappointing dish, I had to stop the fast exit in order to explain my issue. Training! Nearly everyone seemed to be in a hurry speed walking down the narrow lanes between tables, and not exactly on cat's feet. This was distracting and at times annoying as they dodged guests or other workers. At one point, the gentleman working in the sweater (perhaps the Maître d'?) pounded a chair loudly and jokingly to a server. Really unnecessary and jarring. He never smiled except once when he hugged a personal friend. I certainly did not want a hug, however relaxed and friendlier faces is important. Training! If the on-line menu says six oysters are fifteen dollars and the menu says $21, that's an issue. If the drink menu says the Compari is six dollars, the bill should not be for eight. Within a two hundred dollar tab it is inconsequential while the issue is not and is worth noting for the restaurant's sake. The choices for the table settings still needs work. As an example, serving the chovy egg in a bowl with a fork rather than a spoon is a clear miss. It was a delicious plate, except for the under-cooked potato, however a fork is an error. If a dish like the Tuna Crudo, is prepared with a generous topping of Calabrian pepper sauce, the diners should be warned it is about 16 times hotter than Jalapeño by a TRAINED server. My wife had the beet alternative, which was delicious, while my tuna was very difficult to enjoy. I regretted not choosing the beets after tasting it. I scraped the chili sauce off the remaining tuna. Someone well-trained would have noticed that when removing the plate and should have asked the guest about it. The Gnocchi was delicious though not exactly light pillows, however the pork portions were significantly unequal by at least half and a sign something was amiss. It should have been corrected before leaving the kitchen to be served. The Swordfish itself was the best I have ever eaten. Very moist and tender however, the total dish like some others, needed editing. Too many ingredients. Far too little of the barely present yet wonderful citrus drizzle circling the fish and too much romescu. The "potato risotto" was bland and regrettable but the fish itself was prepared so well! Really excellent swordfish! The Strip Steak overall was delicious although the server hurriedly mentioned a source and a special quality that we missed. Mine was cooked a bit under rare. The center of my wife's was warm, barely above raw and was soon on my plate. There must be a way to vary the cooking level of a steak. The gratin and maitake were delicious as was the sauerkraut puree however we had no idea what was in the very small portion and wanted more. What were we eating? Training! The thin vanilla sponge dessert was a bit dry although my wife enjoyed it. Three types of "dipping dots" were included. Two were tasty whimsies but the beet dots were flavorless and melted into a small puddle that reminded us of the red center of the steak. Two other plates were included. First was an amuse-bouche of a beignet with a mild bit of chili and jam that was very good. The second was a "palate cleanser" after the steak course that was hurriedly under-explained and was a mild vinaigrette slaw over a tzatziki-like sauce. It was delicious. So much promise.
