Occasionally I'll talk about restaurants that deserve a sixth Yelp star. This may be the first time that I've wanted a seventh star. Au Pied do Fouet is marvelous. If you closed your eyes and tried to imagine what the inside of a small, cozy French restaurant might look like, you need only set foot in here. We sat up on the "second floor," which is sort of a balcony overlooking the cacophony of locals chattering below. I started with the herring appetizer, and my wife started with one of the salads. We both cleaned out plates. For our entrees, my wife chose the duck confit and I went with the beef bourguignon and jasmine rice. These dishes each deserved Michelin stars--both for the superb preparations and the delightful presentation. As we often do, we sampled each others' dishes and confirmed that we weren't just dreaming. The service was splendid. We also struck up conversation with some of the locals that were dining there, and they genuinely seemed to appreciate our passable French. When we go back, this is a restaurant that we'll walk over coals to get back to. read more

We start today with Au pied de fouet, a small two-level establishment that is still in its juice. The whole gives a soft texture. We smell quality parsley that proves a Burgundy ham inspiration. Only the jelly leaves something to be desired. It is a little bland compared to meat. Three drops of PatRelle flavor and a slight addition of stock can quickly remedy this. We stay in the rustic with the duck sleeves, which are worth more for the taste than the presentation. Why bother making Italian desserts in a typical French restaurant? I know, it's easy to make a cream and switch it with coffee-soaked cookies. But I would remind you that, no matter what we say, no matter what we do, we can't beat the Italians. So if you want to achieve this very average result, you might as well do without it. Or make progress. Is that humor? In any case, I have none for such monstrous spelling mistakes displayed on the front door. read more

We LOVED our meal here. We were looking for some cheap, good, duck confit - and this place did not disappoint at all. That being said, I would caution to only order what you know on the menu... we ordered some dish, entranced by the word 'caviar' - only to find it was some eggplant potato mush that did not taste good at all, and we're sorry to say that we left the vast majority untouched. We also ordered two onion soups to start, and they were very good! Rich in onion taste, with crispy cheese croutons served on the side. The four of us then got our own individual orders of duck confit, and we did not regret it. The duck confit (meat portion) itself isn't too large, and it's grilled/fried to a beautiful golden finish. I found mine to be slightly underseasoned, but the texture and flavour and juice was absolutely delicious. The mashed potatoes were also extremely lovely. They were a burst of flavour and fat (mmmm, butter) and highlighted the duck confit perfectly. Service is extremely friendly, but the place is very cramped. Not overrun by tourists at all - we were the only half English speaking family so we made every effort to speak in French in order to fit in! Quaint looking place was a spontaneous lunch decision since it was somewhat off the beaten path and seemed to be attended by locals. The staff was friendly and spoke English readily. We grabbed a table outside for 3 with a stroller adjacent. Our food was great and arrived lightning fast. It was all prepared but plated when we ordered. Went with high expectations but got disappointed as my steak was chewy , tough , no seasoning and bland . They used flank steak ( which I wasn't informed about at all) Ordered the steak with blue cheese sauce - which also had no sign or taste of blue cheese . However the mashed potato was pretty good . My husband ordered the duck confit and he liked it . Hence the 2 stars ... and place is too small - so small that we had to share tables with other guests . Yes very awkward ! New owner, new management, an incompetent bunch. We were asked (politely) not to linger any longer, possibly a new trend to turn tables, je ne sais. Worse, the food was not very tasty along with amateur presentation. Within hours I was sick, sweaty, debilitating headaches, followed by diarrhea. Dirty hand touched the bread I later ate, but those fingers could have tainted the iceberg lettuce too. Never go back. read more

My wife and I went to one of the top 10 restaurants in Paris according to some CNN Travelers list, and I'm honestly thinking about my meal here instead. We both ordered onion soup and the steak and mashed potatoes and it was so delicious. Nothing was fancy but the cooking was spot on, just what I like. For dessert we shared the chocolate cake with vanilla sauce, which was almost like a fudge. Not what I expected, but very good. Service was friendly. The only thing I didn't like was getting sat at the same table as other folks, but I'd do it again. read more

Found this restaurant thanks to Yelp. We had recently had a disappointing French meal at a renown restaurant, and were happy to find something that was much less pricey and surprisingly had decent 3.5 star food. The service was friendly and welcomed our lack of French. To start we had the soup of the day, a mushroom and potato soup, which was a bit bland but tasted good enough after some salt. For the plates we had a duck confit with mashed potatoes and a legumes salad. Both were good. For the last course we finished with the mixed cheese plate, which was healthy serving which we could not finish. Overall friendy service, with decent 3.5 food at wallet friendly prices. read more

It was a very long and tiring day when we manage to squeeze ourselves into this cozy little place. I mean its a really small place. My kids were ready cranky and tired but hungry and they were able to sit us in at 9 pm. We sat at a little corner sharing the table with another couple( who for some reason kept staring at us). At first our waitress told us we need to order 3 entrees because it was the 3 of us.. but my 7 year old only wanted to order their soup.She told us usually its not done but she was giving us an exception for the night.But we had ordered 2 desert so that was alright I thought. Ordered the duck confit which was good... crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.My oldest did not like the steak..like the other reviews said..it was way too chewy. If you want to be with a Parisian crowd, I'd advise going to the other location in the 7th. This location is full of tourists speaking loudly in English. If you're an expat like me and miss hearing English (or you just wanna eat some damn good traditional French food), come here. The service is totally Parisian but with the added benefit that the waiters mostly speak English. Waiters who patiently speak to you in English is a luxury in France. Still, don't expect an American customer service experience because that ain't gonna happen. We are in France, you know! You will have to accept being crammed together with strangers. You will have to signal to your waitress when you're finished. And no one is going to automatically refill your glass. If you can live with these terms, you will have an excellent meal. Service is quick and efficient. The price is extremely good for Paris... Too good. The duck confit is deliciously cooked to perfection. I also loved the chicken livers... which doesn't sound so great when I type that out in English.. Oh yisss... "foies de volaille" is so much better sounding, isn't it? The flavors are on point. Also check out the specials of the day when you can! I've had amazing steak and fish plates here as well. One of my favorite parts about Au Pied de Fouet is the wine of the month, where you can usually get a whole bottle for about 10-14 euro. End your meal with a giant ton of cheese (the cheese platter is good for groups of 4+) and then a kick-ass dessert like a tarte tatin or custard. This is the place where you should take all your visiting friends who are taking advantage of your expat status. You will feed them well. You will get them wasted for cheap. Everyone will be amazed. We agree with the high rating, but for different reasons. The food is traditional, served quickly and with a smile. But it's not extraordinary. Quick rundown: salade d'endive was OK; flan de champignons very good; cabillaud (haddock) OK; boeuf tartare good, creme caramel mediocre. Portions generous and shareable. Wine list had a lot of bottles around 20 euros, but we went for a "special" minervois rouge, a serviceable ordinaire at 14.50. So why the enthusiasm? One thing is the price/quality ratio. Dinner for two like the above came to 50 euros: you can't beat it in this yuppifying neighborhood. Then there's the atmosphere: small, utterly unpretentious, a bit gritty, a total contrast with a joint up the street where hundreds stood in line for what looked like assembly-line steak/frites in a shiny faux bistro decor. read more

My friend and I stumbled upon this tiny gem as we were walking through the St.Germain area. There was a wait but the complimentary apertif we received as we were sat more than made up for the short wait! We both ordered the beef but while I kept the bleu sauce, my friend changed to a mushroom sauce. We were both incredibly pleased. We also shared a 50cl pot of the house red (2 glasses each) and were delighted with it. We were sat at the end of the communal table upstairs. It was a very tight squeeze but we loved the ambience! While the duck confit was exceptional, the fish was quite disappointing. No seasoning, only sauce (which was actually pretty good, just didn't go well with the halibut). Service was great, catered to English and French. The seating is a bit cramped, but hey, it's Paris. I also recommend the mixed cheese platter; very delicious unpasteurized goat cheese and Brie. My mother and I came here on our first night in Paris. We were in search of a quaint, low key spot with real "homey" French food...to relax and enjoy. We got EXACTLY what we wanted and expected from latest reviews. We shared the pate champagne, both had the duck confit, and shared the chocolate mousse and another delicious caramel dessert I can not spell or pronounce. On a recommendation from a local, we went to Au Pied to Fouet for dinner during our time and Paris. What a wonderful meal! Prices were reasonable in this cozy place, and the food was top-notch. We will certainly be making a return trip the next time we are in Paris. First time in Paris and was getting tired of the cafe's high cost (~€80) for three croque monsiuer and 3 beers. Never been a fan of French food and had found good Thai and Indian places to go to. A friend brought us here . . . mostly locals (4.5/5 on Trip Advisor). The ambiance was wonderful - small and friendly, waiters were nice (not artificially as with tourist areas). Had mushrooms w/mint and light spices for starter then confit duck leg for main. Others had dry sausage and tuna tartare for starters and they then had beef tartare and another duck confit . Nice light red wine and great berry tart for dessert. Total for for all this GREAT food for 4 was €82 . . . BEST food and best € value the whole trip! Trusting Yelp, we went out of our way to eat here and we were not disappointed. As others have stated, it is non-touristy, very local and a great dining experience at a reasonable price. I had the lapin (rabbit) and my wife had the fletan (halibut), both of which were top rate. We finished with creme marron (chestnut) which was very sweet. The house wine was also a good buy. We spent 40 euro for lunch. It fills up quickly so get there on the early side so you won't have to wait for a table. As we were two, we shared a table with two others - most tables are four tops. Again - thanks to the makers of Yelp and the community for being there when travelers are in need of good food. We were walking around and getting hungry - a yelp search told me that not too far away is this awesome little, totally French place. We went there and were not let down. This place is really French - and not the tourism kind of French but French French. It's actually a really tiny place but was empty when we arrived there at around 11:30 am. The staff immediately offered us a cute little table on the first floor and was prompt to take our orders. I ordered duck with mashed potatoes and my girlfriend got the chicken liver. We were both pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. It was amazing and I do like to say that I have now tried REAL French cuisine at its finest. What is more, after a while the place was packed and people started to cue outside to get a table. Best of all - it was locals that were filling the place which I think can already be seen as a huge compliment for any restaurant. The prices are very, very moderate for what you get and I will keep this place in very pleasant memories of my trip to Paris. read more

Okay, this was really interesting...I read all the previous reviews extolling their virtues but wasn't close to anticipating this quality. We had the duck confit which everyone mentions and for good reason. Excellent. I had the homemade pate de campagne also excellent. My wife had a salad verte with a classic mustard vignagrette . Excellent. Had to try a dessert, tarte tatin, of course it was excellent...the only downside is that it's small so if you want space between you and your neighbor it may be a problem. The price points are lower than you could guess, my dinner for the above with a bottle of wine and sparkling water was 60 euros.. go beat that in Paris !!! read more

Arrived on Tuesday evening and was promptly seated inside. It was quite warm inside but not unbearable. Ordered a bottle of 1664 (5€) and the Fish with rice dish and the chicken with mashed potato. Portions are small (12-13€ each dish). The flavors were ok but nothing special. The fish was a white, I'm not sure on the type. Overall, I think the cost is what appeals most to this place. Apple tarte tartin- I had this twice in a five day period because it was so good. It's what desserts dream of becoming. The service is really great, and they are American/English-speaking friendly. In my two visits to Au Pied de Fouet, I had the steak and mashed potatoes, chicken gizzard salad, French salad, and paté and everything was really superb. As I am writing this review, I'm sure my meal is digesting. I would first have to say that the place is very small but charming. I would also have to say that if you are looking for a fancy high end meal this isn't the place for you. Two of us went on 5/30/2016 and unlike a previous review, we were the only non-French speaking table out of the five occupied tables. The waiter said he spoke only a little English when in actuality, he did quite well. We started with a 3 euro glass of wine and a large bottle 4,50 euro bottle of water followed by a 3 euro green salad. The salad consisted mostly of lettuce with an extremely small portion of diced carrots with a tasty mustard based dressing. The wife ordered steak tartare that came with some potatoes and a small salad like what was previously mentioned. I ordered the duck confit that came with mashed potatoes. The check came to about 34 euros and so part of the high rating was due to the reasonable price. We have not eaten in a Paris restaurant for this little money. read more
