Today, I came in with concerns about some pain I've been experiencing. Dr. Herr took the time to truly listen, and his sensitivity and honesty helped put my mind at ease. As someone who's never even had a cavity, I was honestly anxious about the possibility of needing a crown. But Dr. Herr was open about his own experiences and reassured me that sometimes, despite our best efforts, things just happen. Very good customer service, amazing staff, friendly atmosphere, but make sure you pay close attention when discussing insurances. I wasn't corrected nor did they bring this to my attention until AFTER the fact, but they accepted my insurance who paid partial, but they don't know the cost until afterwards. Absolutely the best dentist, and dental staff in Bakersfield. The chairs are massage chairs with TV's hanging over them. If you are here for a crown it's one stop. No temp needed. Dr Shively has a machine that can make the permit crown while you wait. He is great at matching the color too. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember. Dr Shively and his staff are all fantastic. They make having to go to the Dentist a very pleasant experience. They are very punctual as far as keeping appointment times are concerned. I don't think I have ever sat in the waiting room longer than 5 mins. If you ever need a crown, this is the place to go. They have a in-house machine that will create your crown within 1/2hr. Very courteous people, nice staff and doctors, they explain to you everything you need to know and ask about. They got me in quick, did my root canal and sent me on my way, it is shameful they are out of network for me so im paying double the negotiated insurance rate for in network doctors which results in a not affordable out of pocket amounts for me. I will be finishing my tooth here but sadly i won't be able to afford to come back without being in network, i hope my insurance adds them, i really like the place and the staff. This place is awesome the staff is friendly and caring! They really took the time to understand my needs and get to know me!!! They gave me an X-ray and asked about my history! I really liked that the dentist explained what I needed and what I wanted for myself! We talked about flossing and the usual however I didn't feel intimidated by him uncomfortable instead I felt at ease because he used examples when explaining and talked to me like a person not a patient you know :)Apart of my usual now!!! Let me preface this by saying: I hate having to go to the dentist. I have had a LOT of dental work done and it is usually painful and without much care for the patients' wants or feelings towards treatment. This is the first dentist that I have ever been to that actually included me in the decisions on my treatment plan. The staff was all very friendly and seemed to genuinely care about me as a patient. Everyone was incredibly helpful and understanding of my anxiety about dentists. Dr. Shively is incredibly nice and answered all of my questions without making me feel rushed. They don't overbook so you get a lot of face-time with the dentist, and they also give you real time estimates for your visit so you can plan the rest of your day accordingly. He actually spent quite a bit of time talking to me about my personal dental needs and what we can do to optimize my dental care. I am actually looking forward to going back to see Dr. Shively. I will definitely recommend him to all of my friends and family members! Let me start off by saying that going to the dentist is something I used to dread more than I can say. I say this only because I have had the worst experiences ever throughout my life and I am 61!. All of this changed yesterday when I went in for a crown at Auburn Dental Center. Dr Pham and the staff are all truly amazing. He is kind, patient, thorough, and his knowledge and skills are fabulous, to say the least. I can NOT even tell I had any dental work what so ever - other than my new crown took away the discomfort my cracked one gave me, AND it was made right in the office! No waiting for two weeks with a temporary. Needed to find another dentist around the area, decided to give this place a try. Was able to schedule an appointment fairly quick. Got scheduled under Dr. Pham. Day of the appt: Checked in the front desk and after 10 mins, the dental assistant came out to greet me, prepped me up for xrays etc. Then Dr. Pham came in the room very energetic and went over my xrays with me and consulted me on what work needs to be done. Luckily it was very minor work since the last dentist told me I have 10 cavities, I needed a 2nd opinion and hence here I am. He saw only a couple of cavities that werent that major and kept a close watch on it as long as I brush and floss everyday I should be fine. Did some teeth cleaning with the hygienist and that was it. The staff were very nice and friendly. Dr. Pham is conservative with his diagnosis which I like. Dr. Shively was also there to greet me. Such a friendly place, I highly recommend.....Forgot to mention, I love the massage chairs, it was very relaxing. :) read more

Just had the best experience you could ask for from Dr. Shively's dental office. Had to have a crown put on today and usually you get prepped fitted with a temporary then have to come back for the permanent crown...not at Dr. Shively's! He has this state of the art machine that mills the permanent crown in office and you can watch your crown being made...awesome! Done in less than 3 hours on my way home very pleased with the outcome. Highly recommend this dental office. read more

I just had a recent visit to this dentist, I was a new patient to them. Over all I had a very good experience here being my first time. They made me feel very comfortable especially since I have a fear of dentists, the staff was super kind. I did have a bit of a wait time, my appointment was at 10:45 and didn't see the hygienist until 11:30 or so. The hygienist was sweet & kind she explained everything as well as Dr. Pham. I definitely don't mind coming back here for my routine cleanings. read more

Really top notch dental office. I don't see how they could be any better! Dr. Shively is extremely gentle. and never rushes. He constantly asks about any pain you may be having during procedures, and is very concerned with your comfort level. There are TV's above the chairs so you can keep your mind occupied while getting your dental work done. I even got to watch my new crown being made in office while I waited. Which was great because it didn't require having to spend a week or two with a temporary crown in place. Just one visit and done. His staff are also great! I had my first visit here earlier today. I am beyond impressed! All the staff were very friendly. The woman at the front desk was very friendly and had a great sense of humor. The dental assistant doing my xrays really went out of her way to make sure I was as comfortable as possible and explained everything she was doing. She was very friendly and personable! Dr. Shively is beyond excellent. He also went out of his way to make sure everything was comfortable and explained things very thoroughly. He has the sort of personality that really put me at ease, and he has a great sense of humor! He would definitely be ideal for someone who gets nervous at the dentist! I also found him to be very honest. Not like some dentists who try to pressure patients into getting a bunch of expensive procedures that aren't always necessary. Dr. Shively examined me and was very straightforward about what needs to be taken care of right away and what can be left alone for awhile. I don't have dental insurance, and he seemed to really understand that I'm on a budget and did not try to pressure me into a bunch of stuff that I can't afford right now. I have been going to Dr. Shively since I was a kid. When I moved out of state, I would specifically wait until coming back to visit just so I could go to him. I don't know how many people can say that about their dentist. His new office is fantastic. The staff are very helpful and make the process go more easily. Whenever I go to get a routine cleaning--even if Dr. Shively is not specifically working on my teeth--he always stops by to say hello and ask how I'm doing. I've noticed that when he works with patients, he always explains step-by-step what is happening and to let him know about any type of pain, no matter how minor. I always recommend him when people in my hometown are looking for dentists to go to! Going to the dentist shouldn't be a hassle and Dr. Shively makes the process smooth and anxiety-free. read more
