TL;DR - Beautiful venue, no reception I remember when August Hall used to be Ruby Skye... It was a fantastic venue then too to watch/party with EDM artists. Now, August Hall typically plays rock/alternative and I love that. I recently saw the band WET there! I love the spacious venue. I had no reception in there though - maybe its T-mobile? Also, if you are a corporate company - you can rent out August Hall to host parties or trainings. I did that for my tech company before. Also I ordered a "double" for a drink and was disappointed as hell, NOT worth the extra pricing. read more

Seen quite a few shows here recently and overall it's a good venue. Not a bad view anywhere in the house, easy access to the bar, clean bathrooms, friendly staff. But the lighting for concerts is terrible. I've stood in many different spaces throughout the venue and lights are constantly in my eyes. Light the stage, not the audience... it's really distracting and makes it really hard to see the band. Also - they rely on strobes WAY too much. Anytime the music gets slightly faster someone slaps the strobe button and walks away. Honestly I'd give this place 5 stars if they fixed the stage lighting. I wanna watch the show, not squint my eyes and feel like I am being interrogated. read more

Well dang; thank goodness for a wonderful night out with a good friend last week, which led us to find August Hall, nestled in the Union Square area. Best of all, we found out Rick Ross was coming to SF the next day! Me: Oh Snap! Rick Ross is coming to SF tomorrow!" My friend: "Oh, I love that big man!" I looked at her surprised o_0 Funny thing was, I'm in love with him as well! UUHH (in my RICK ROSS VOICE) I pulled my phone out and long behold the tickets were CHEAP! The next day we were back in Union Square dressed to impress to see Rick Ross. Now, the venue is GORGEOUS! (I heard it use to be a club). I loved the décor and the acoustics were on point, plus inside was very intimate and had an upstairs and downstairs with a bar on each floor. Gotta' love it! I must back up and give props to the security for the fast check-in to enter the venue. Showed ID, scanned the ticket, checked purses and walked right in--Viola! Just like that. Upon entering, there was a stand where Rick Ross was selling his Hurricane book--Honestly, I would have also liked to see his alcohol hurricane bottle for sale there as well; I'm just saying'. We ordered a drink and headed to the front of the stage. Shortly after Rick Ross entered the building and the crowd went crazy. Now, the things I loved about the concert that helped them earn all 5 stars: 1. Rick Ross, of course! 2. The venue was very intimate, and it was a great crowd of people (not overcrowded) 3. The concert started and ended at a reasonable time 4. Bathrooms were clean 5. Bartenders know how to make a damn good drink! Dang, they were STRONG! Whoo! The tickets were an amazing price! I love that it was priced for everyone to attend! Okay, okay! I could go on and on! Honestly, I love this venue and can't wait to come back to see a more amazing artist like Rich Ross! UHHH! Decent venue. Saw Covet, Hikes, King of Heck and Moxy the Band. It was fine. The sound was best where it usually is at live venues, in the middle where people eventually want to "mosh". But they have plenty of speakers in places where at other venues the sound is unbearable. The sides for example had their own PAs. That's also where the handicap area was, which was cool to see. Had the sides elevated about a foot with benches for those who want to sit. Upstairs the balcony also has a bar like the GA first floor. Balcony has more benches to sit on the sides and railings to lean on but the sound isn't as good as the floor. Venue is near plenty of parking garages and restaurants. Bathrooms are acceptably clean for a concert hall. I would recommend this place to someone if they really liked who was playing there. THE SHOW: headliner was Covet, who was without their bass player for some reason. Drummer Forrest was awesome with his audience contact and fun facts about frogs between songs. Referred to the bass track as "Digital Dave" . About halfway through covets set the guitar players amp (Vox AC30) blew up and they asked the other bands if they could borrow an amp. (That AC30 sounded AMAZING before it blew up, tubes I guess.) The Hikes singer and lead guitar player (Nay Wilkins) helped Yvette Young out and let her use her Quilter amp and 2x12 cab. After about 5 or 10 minutes of the drummer stalling in the best way telling comedic facts, they got back into playing and it was almost like that never happened. Really cool to see. Drummer got the crowd convinced that everyone had pent up chaotic frog energy that need needed to be purged by dancing and moshing. Awesome show. read more

I had my wallet stolen from my bag during a concert, and the person who stole it charged $100 at the bar during the show. I reported this to August Hall, and when I reported my card stolen and the transaction as fraud, August Hall chose to fight with my credit card company to pass off the transaction as legitimate, even when the receipt they submitted as proof was clearly not even close to my signature which my bank also noted. Again, August Hall was aware that I was a victim of theft at their establishment and they still chose to pass off a fraudulent transaction they processed with my stolen card as a valid transaction. I will never see a show here again, I'd rather wait to enjoy my time at a venue that respects their customers and practices good business. read more

The sounds quality was unbeleivably bad. All three bands had to do multiple sound checks during their sets/middle of songs. The headliner could barely finish their set. I have gone three times at this point and the first two the sound quality was not great, but passable. This was truly attrocious. It is a shame because it is a beautiful and historic venue. I hope they can get it together, I feel bad for any band that has to play there in this state. Noteably, the drinks are stupid expensive. I got one Titos Soda and a Stella and it was $35!!! The prices are not posted as well. They also would not allow the musicians to bring booze onto the stage?? I don't know where to start on how ridiculous and non sensical that is. The sound in this music venue is great. I saw Nosaj Thing, Dam-Funk, and Machinedrum last night. The music played ranged from drum and bass to funk with vocal and finally eletronic, glitch-hop type music. Music played with no distortions that I could hear with the high/mids/low range and I was mostly at the front and middle of the main floor area. Security didn't seem as bad as some of the reviews here mention. There's additional standing room and limited seating area off to the sides on the 1st floor. They had the 2nd floor closed off for this show. $14 for a gin and tonic at the bar. read more

I was at the Wolf Alice concert and the sound at this venue is horrendous and muddy. Although I stood in the front row, I could barely hear the vocals of the opener and the main act. The band even picked up on the bad sound and commented on it during the show. The atmosphere of the venue is nice though. An usher let me know about the downstairs joint bar, the Fifth Arrow. Their website stated that a minimum of a $20 purchase at the bar was needed for expedited entry to the venue, but the usher let me in even though I explicitly said I wasn't going to purchase anything. The bar is bowling themed and very modern. Lastly, mask wearing wasn't enforced that much. A press photographer had to be told to wear their mask and many concert goers were maskless even without drinks in hand. read more

I told the security guard that I couldn't go through the metal detector due to having a medical device (pacemaker), she still made me go through the detector. If you're going to have security guards at least train them to recognize when someone says they have a medical device. This is the second time this has happened at this same venue and it is absolutely ridiculous that it happened even once. The people who train the security guards don't give two shits about anyone, they just want to collect a paycheck and call it a night. read more

The venue itself is pretty and the acoustics are good -- unfortunately, their bouncers seem to have a very hard time with IDs that aren't from California. You don't have to humble yourself, August Hall; some people really do come from out of state to see your shows. Those people like to drink and like in/out entry, too! Unfortunately, your bouncers, who either don't know Nevada is a state or are veritable Matlocks privy to a conspiracy to fake an ID just to get into some random venue in San Francisco that the TSA, four other Bay Area bars, and the Nevada DMV are all in cahoots with, deprived you of at least one drink sale tonight. They also deprived the poor main act performing of $60 in merch sales, since their merch guy's card reader was broken and I would've had to go to an ATM and come back, necessitating an exit from the venue. As someone who used to manage an act, myself, I understand the importance of merch sales and wanted to show my support for a bunch of phenomenal musicians...but August Hall had other plans in mind. Sorry, guys! Hopefully I get to see you at a venue that believes in good, old fashioned American commerce next time. read more

I absolutely hate posting shitty reviews. But I have to do this, Digable planets, what used to be an amazing hip-hop band was absolute garbage. One of the main reasons was the worst sound system I have ever heard any venue try to push off on an audience. This was a hip-hop group that really heavily relied on their percussion and their baselines, etc. You couldn't hear it. I'm not joking you could barely hear a fucking groove. So part of it was the band not giving a shit and the other part was August hall. I think if you are the venue and you booked someone Who couldn't give a shit about their sound, the venue has a responsibility to do something about it. Really pretty venue, one bar on top and one on bottom. There is also a green room bar upstairs in the back, but it is very cold and smells like mildew. I forgot my ear plugs, but it worked out because we watched from upstairs behind the speakers. I ventured to the newly redone August Hall to see an absolute favorite artist. It was my first time at the venue and traffic was atrocious getting here. Thankfully there are some parking garages that only cost an arm nearby so I didn't have to mess with circling in traffic to find a needle in a haystack parking spot nearby or end up walking 8 blocks. 7 blocks I can do like a champ, but 8 is my limit without a snack -just kidding of course ;) . I really love the look and feel of this venue. It has great views from multiple angles with no annoying pillars or posts obstructing the view. It is standing only except the alcoves underneath the balcony against the wall or against the wall in the balcony. Not a fan of that particularly, but it's a cool space, well cool as in the vibe. It did get unbearably hot in the front; you can take off a jacket but that's about it, and it didn't help much. They have a bar if you're thirsty with friendly bar tenders. Actually pretty much everyone that worked there including the security was friendly. Bathrooms for men and women have the same entrance. No hooks on back of bathroom doors for purses or backpacks and running out of toilet paper without it being a jam packed event-why??? The main floor was quite sticky when you walked on it but didn't dissuade people from sitting down while waiting for the event to start. Some people didn't like the sound system in their review; for this music event there didn't seem to be any issues, except for the annoyingly loud people talking during a quiet song. The place wasn't overly packed but of course, I must smell amazing people, because some dudes just can't figure out personal space and kept inching up on me every time I moved away like a bee on a flower swaying in the breeze. The flower being me, of course, but you already knew that didn't you dear discriminating reader. When I finally had it with Mr. No-concept-of personal-space, I meandered up to the balcony which ended up being much more enjoyable for me. I never came here when it was a club, but I love it as a music venue. I can walk to it from BART, there's two levels and it's a great size. It is smaller than the Warfield but bigger than The Independent. It's not massive but it's small enough to still be intimate. I think there's only one bar, which I could see being an issue for a big show but it was fine when I went. I thought the sound was good and the staff were friendly. Like most places in San Francisco, parking is basically impossible. But there is a ton of parking garages close to the venue. I usually park at the California Parking lots because it's valet and 24 hour covered parking. There is a restaurant and bowling alley, I heard it's cool but didn't actually go to either. read more

I used to come to Ruby Skye all the time. The carpet was nasty and the sound was very distorted and muffled. When I heard it was being remodeled, I hoped for better sound so badly. I saw pictures, new wood floors and new stadium level speakers. I was very excited. I went tonight to see feed me and no Mana. No Mana's set was very quiet and the bass was overpowering with missing sub bass frequencies and very weak treble. It was such a poor sounding system, but because he was the opener, I was hoping it would improve when feed me got on. When feed me got on the sound was the same. Super weak bass, balance was off, low treble, very low volume. The old Ruby Skye speakers were bit and loud, but old and poorly tuned. The new setup looks nice, but is actually extremely weak. Feed me even seemed visibly upset at the low quality of sound. I hope they fix this issue, otherwise I will not be coming back. read more

This place is awesome! I had no idea how small and intimate a place it would be. I saw Brazilian Girls here last weekend with two fun openers. There is plenty of room to stand up front and dance (where I was), seating on the sides, and an upstairs if you prefer to watch from above. I didn't go to the bar this time, but it was located conveniently at the back of the main floor. Bathrooms were nice! The acoustics were good, the design and atmosphere was modern and enjoyable, and the general layout was simple. No getting lost! I can't wait to come back and see more shows here! Bonus that it's so close to BART, and I felt totally safe walking back alone at 12:30 at night. read more

Saw a show here recently and it was amazing! It's the perfect size for a venue, bathrooms are clean, staff are nice, and there's a good amount of rooms for all guests. There's an upper level where you can watch the show from a balcony and a lower level for more dancing. There's some benches on the size where you can sit if desired. Also there's FREE WATER. Super nice. You can bring a REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE as long as it's empty. Can't wait to come back! read more

-on Wednesday March 2 2022 I purchased a general admission ticket for the Ty Segall show ----------------------------------------------- -at the box office I was told to show full proof of vaccination -as of February 1st 2022 California passed a new rule that in order to attend any private events you must be fully vaccinated with a booster shot as well 2 weeks after full vaccination was received -I was not aware of this new rule...as me being "fully vaccinated" with the Johnson & Johnson shot *only one shot is needed for full vaccination* but not having a booster I was told to speak to the current shift manager of that night working on March 2 2022...the manager explained to me that without the booster shot I was unable to attend the event. -which was understandable why I was not allowed by management to attend the event but without receiving what I paid for *seeing the event* I asked the shift manager for a refund which I was told to do by the shift manager himself on Wednesday 3/2/22 NOW COMES THE ISSUE------------------------- -the male shift manager for that night Wednesday 3/2/22 told me to speak with the window and the female employee at the window said "okay" and "that my refund is going to be processed" THIS IS THE ISSUE---------------------- -the female employee at the window DID NOT ASK FOR MY NAME OR INFORMATION OR GIVE ME A REFUND SLIP OR RECEIPT FOR THE REFUND I REQUESTED -I got angry and upset that I was not issued a receipt slip or refund slip receipt -I do not like theft, fraud or people stealing my money -I didn't not receive any EMAIL from august hall Sf WHICH THE MALE SHIFT MANAGER TOLD ME I WOULD RECIEVE 7-8 business days from the point or sale -I was not issued a receipt and your staff told me to "take a hike" in thee exact words -I respectfully became angry...no swearing no rude remarks to the August Hall SF staff...me simply as a customer of your business I was pretty much told to get the fuck out of their sight or they would call the cops on me for being violent or drunk which is absurd because I was not -all I asked is I do not trust them nor will I take their word that a refund will be issued without a physical receipt I was threatened with arrest which is an absurd and weak attempt at a power move of your employees part but after all of that I was still not promised a receipt -I threatened them with calling my bank which I called right there and then...my bank told me I would need a receipt for proof of refund and if given a receipt and not paid then the bank will reimburse me -but your male shift manager for Wednesday 3/2/22 told me that August Hall SF does not have a printer in the vicinity and they do not give out receipts WHICH IS INSANE FOR ANY BUSINESS!!! Security here is a joke. My wife's company had a Christmas party here a few days ago. So we start to enter the venue and are met in front by "security" wanding people down... Not really the environment of a large corporation Christmas party. The security guard wands me down, clearly not knowing what he is doing and waves me through... however, being a police officer and knowing he is looking for weapons, I tell him he missed my gun and identify myself. I did this for two reasons... One, because I'm honest and two, I want him to be better at his job. I had a large firearm and he missed it. He tells me that there are no guns allowed inside. In 24 years of carrying a gun, I have never seen a business (besides airlines and ball parks) where police officers aren't allowed to cary... He then tells me to go inside and wait as they have a locker I could store it in. This is common and have had this happen before. So, I then go inside, unescorted with my gun that they missed the first time and wait... and wait and wait... Where I could have gone in unnoticed... Finally after a series of security officers talking to me, they tell me another police officer's gun is already in storage and I can't store mine there. They eventually send down the "Facility Manager" (I forget his title). He tells/ confirms the following: -There are no signs posted saying police officers can't have firearms -It was not disclosed to the company when they booked it. -He tells me I can store my weapon in his safe, but then recinds that after "thinking about it" because "Too many people have access to his safe." -He tells me that there is no other peace officer inside with a firearm they are storing (ie, they lied to me earlier). -His rationale for not having police with firearms was "there was a shooting here (points to side of building) a few years ago". ??? what?? Not involving a peace officer or anyone carrying a weapon legally. -He told me that they have "NEVER" run into this situation before and no police officer has ever tried to bring a weapon inside. -He then changed his story to "he isn't comfortable with anyone having a gun." After it became clear I wasn't talking to someone with common sense and they had lied to me, we left. My wife's company will not be booking future events there either. Just to recap, their security is incompetent and the illusion of security is just that... because they missed my gun and because I'm an honest peace officer, I told them, I was denied entry. I'm guessing a crazy man with a gun meaning to do harm won't do the same... And if he does get inside, there won't be anyone to stop them because the honest people are kept out. Don't waste your time with these people... If you are thinking of booking a corporate event here where spouses are invited, there will be peace officers (more than likely) and they won't be welcome here like they are in literally every other venue. read more

PARKING: there's literally a garage ACROSS THE STREET that isn't on their website and didn't pop up on maps (at the time of my show, could be different now). super convenient, but it does shut down at 11. DOORS: they let us in 20 min earlier than what was on the ticket, so that was a great opportunity to buy merch and get drinks STAFF: friendly! security outside, folks who took tickets, the bartenders, everyone we interacted with was cool-which is RARE so i thought i'd note that here BATHROOMS: clean, multiple stalls so they were not crowded. easy access. *there was no in's and out's at my show. if you left you wouldn't be let back in There was limited seating around the perimeter of the venue, first come first serve. For our show, guests were NOT allowed upstairs to view the show from the balcony, which was a bummer. There were some people up there-so I guess it's an exclusive thing for rich people? Not sure. We would've liked the view from there, and it seemed like most shows it's usually open? No weird under 21 drink fee that a lot of venues seem to impose upon younger guests, so that's great. For folks with asthma or respiratory issues that cause concern when going to small venues, this place was okay!! No one was vaping/smoking indoors, and air quality/circulation was good! There was also plenty of space in the back of the room when I needed to step out of the crowd. read more

Really upset we missed the show because the dance floor was too cold to even enjoy ourselves. I purchased a VIP ticket for an event because there were no regular tickets left, but I really wanted to see the DJ. The VIP ticket promised special entrance line, but when I went there there was no line. I asked twice the staff manning the line where the VIP line was, and both times they said there was no VIP line and I have to wait in the regular line. Since they failed to deliver on any of the promised VIP benefits, I later kindly asked them to refund the difference between a regular & VIP ticket, since that seemed reasonable. They blamed me for any confusion and refused to refund the difference. read more

First impression is everything and August Hall has failed. Been here a few times when it was still Ruby Skye, after it changed to August Hall, decided to come through for a friend's birthday. We got 2 tables in advance, however when we showed up to the door, the security told us to go back to line up. We tried to explain that we got table service, which usually means skipping the General Admission line. Lining up is totally chill, except while we were leaving, he said to us: "Welcome to America!" with a smirk. That statement to a group of Asians, strongly insinuating that we do not understand their rules based on our race (picture of the security attached). Bottom line is, us not understanding their house rule is on us, but the host should have done a much better job treating their guests especially since they just opened. read more

The worst venue I have ever been to. August Hall has completely failed me. It was my first time seeing Feed Me & No Mana after years of missing their events in the city. I frequented August Hall when it was a night club called "Ruby Skye". Although I loathed Ruby Skye for all its shortcomings, August Hall has reminded me of how much I miss them. Upon arrival, I can see the minimalist and more "modern" approach to the space. Removal of the seating area before the bathroom gave a cleaner look. Bathrooms are also cleaner and better lit. But once I got to the dance floor/main room everything prior seemed like an after thought. Gone are the disgusting & foul carpets of Ruby Skye for tasteless painted floors and sticky wood. The dance floor seriously felt like a dirty restroom at a gas station. Although they have a full bar, they do not serve cocktails like "long islands" or "AMF". Strictly just one liquor and one mixer type cocktails like gin and tonic/ jack and coke. Sound quality was embarrassing. They completely threw out the old Ruby Skye sound system for two speakers that are weak and underpowered. I know Ruby Skye's sound system was dated and muddy, but at least it packed a punch. With the new system, Sub bass & bass frequencies are not present, which gave room for all the higher frequencies. This combination created an uncomfortable listening experience. I could hear other people conversations on the dance floor as well. Never have I ever experienced listening to music uncomfortably quiet at a venue. I understand this is a "music hall" and they're going to have different genres of music playing at the venue. But if you're going to book acts that are bass heavy, especially with electronic music at least have club standard equipment. I cannot imagine any other electronic artist booking this venue and using their equipment. Until they fix this issue with the sound quality, I will not be returning to this venue. read more

The sound quality was just awful tonight for No Mana and Feed Me. I had high hopes for the newly renovated space where Ruby Skye used to be. The venue itself is improved, cleaner and more modern. The staff is more friendly, too. However, the sound was atrocious and the dance floor was awkwardly well lit. I couldn't get into the music due to the sound of people's conversations. I hope they fix this quickly or I won't be returning. read more

I went to a concert here last weekend and I was very impressed, the line was wrapped around the block twice, due to the show being sold out, but we were in line 30 mins tops maybe shorter and the venue was gorgeous, and the 2 bars on both floors, genius! And must I say that sound system was the best that I have ever heard. So it's safe to say that I am a fan of August hall and I live in Sacramento but I will be keeping an eye out for shows here and booking here. Very please customer Lulu read more

I was here over the weekend to catch Ghostland Observatory, and really enjoyed the entire venue. Just an awesome spot to take in a concert and enjoy a night out. There are two levels to August Hall (which used to be Ruby Skye back in the day, for all those SF folks in the know). The first level is mostly open floor, and easy to get up close to both the stage and artist. There are bars wrapped around the entire perimeter, so not too hard to get a drink (which is great). The second floor has a large balcony that offers a number of interesting vantage points, along with multiple bars (including a completely separate bar in the back that's a good refuge if you want to take a breather from the show). A buddy and I started the evening on the balcony floor, and caught the last half of the show on the first floor, about ten feet from the stage. The acoustics are really solid -- very clear (though it can get loud). The owners/designers did a nice job of enhancing Ruby Skye, but managing to keep a lot of the old charm of the previous spot. Will definitely be back. read more

Mixed review. The show/space: beautiful old space, large, pretty good view from anywhere on the floor unless someone tall stands in front of you ;) There were definitely sound issues and a lot of feedback happened, although it didn't overtake the entire show. The lights were cool. I agree with other viewers that when the lights would blind you in your face it was a little much though. And could be problematic for some folks. The crowd was chill, people seemed genuinely there to enjoy the music and not to get drunk/obnoxious/etc. Never figured out how to get to the other restaurant/bar?bowling alley? part but was curious about it. I was hungry and a little disappointed that the only food available at the bar was some gross-looking (no offense) square 'pizza marguerita' that looked like it had been sitting in a display case for a long time. Other stuff: The person who gave us our wristbands was very nice. When I started to walk in then through the metal detector I got yelled at by security not to walk through, that this was like an airport, I had to put my things on the conveyor belt. I hadn't realized that and apologized. Then when I tried to put my jacket on there I was yelled at again that they didn't want my clothes. It all felt really intense, like we were under a lot of scrutiny and guilty of something just for being there. After getting through that another guard stopped us and demanded our other wrists to give us a stamp with no explanation as to why we needed stamps on one wrist and bands on the other. The second time we went through I got a sort of patdown/scan with a wand. At the end of the night I got yelled at aggressively again as I drifted out of the concert hall and toward the exit with my little paper cup of water, that I couldn't step outside with my water cup. Some of the folks working were friendly and helpful toward us, including security, but the intensity of all the uniformed security and the hostility left me with a sort of a panicky feeling that lasted throughout the night. I understand the need for security but this place just wasn't my vibe and I probably won't return. I'm more used to going to smaller venues anyway. read more
