I came here for the lamingtons and fell in love with the pies. These are happy dance worthy meat pies for sure. The curry chicken pie was chock full of corn, peas, big chunks of perfectly cooked chicken, and a delicious mild curry sauce. The pepper and steak pie was full of a peppery sauce and ground beef/steak that was like a hug for my stomach. I loved them so much I bought a bunch more frozen pies to share and eat later. The cherry ripe slice was a tasty shortbread topped with chocolate but I only had room for a bite after the two pies. Whoops! It will be delicious with coffee tomorrow. And I know my neighbor from NZ will be so happy about the lamington cake I'm bringing to her birthday party tonight. Can't wait to try that too! read more

Write a bad review for Australian bakery and cafe to say I had a bad experience there, when I walked in no one would come to the fronvto serve and I waited for about 3 minutes as everyone was in the back. An elderly gentleman man-- I hope he is walked up to the counter and asked me "what are you trying to do"? I thought that greeting to be strange but I smiled it off and said that I'd like to order 2 meat pies and a drink. He summon the cashier lady who became clearly rude to me and tried to take my order hurriedly. There was a coala bear sitting on the county and I asked how much and she said can I get your order. I replied they used to be for sale and she rudely told me that I know nothing about that, CAN I TAKE YOUR ORDER!!!! As I waited for my order to process I so how happily these two interacted with the 2 groups of sit in families offering the best service, I felt discriminated and unwanted in this establishment, it's a shame I have been a customer for 20 years. I really really wanted this place to be amazing. I love Australian pies, and crave them often. I was excited to find this place but the pies left a lot to be desired. First, the pastry was undercooked and looked like it needed just a few more minutes in the oven. But outside of that the filling was almost inedible. We tried steak and cheese, lamb curry and chicken curry pies. I'm not sure how they're cooking their curry but you can tell the spices haven't been fried correctly. The taste is so pungent it caught me in the back of my throat and I couldn't stop coughing. I'm Indian by heritage so I eat curry regularly (almost daily) and this was laughable at best. The steak gravy was so overwhelming it made the pie inedible. Two stars for the pastries as they were delicious and fresh. I really hope they can figure out their pie fillings and improve the taste. Lastly, the shop needs a deep clean and a little capital reinvested to update it and improve the overall ambiance. read more

My 10 year old saw pavlova on Bluey and really wanted to try it. I called before going to make sure they would have some available and they confirmed they did and even offered to hold a few aside to make sure they were there for us. When we got in they immediately grabbed the two pavlovas and we ordered some hot chocolate. It was all delicious and the employee helping us was so very sweet to my daughter and our family. The curry lamb pie was a little disappointing but by no means bad. We also had the steak and cheese pie which was much better and would get next time. Cute little spot. They have a lady singing live which is weird for this style place. They take too long to make the food which I don't like too much. We had the pie sampler and egg platter. The pie samplers you can order cold told go or hot if your eating there. I had the sausage & beef/ mushroom. They were not impressive and very small. The egg plater - the eggs and ham were good, the potatoes were really good too. Quiet as a church early in the morning. I was in there with 5 other patrons. All of us eating and using our phones. No music played. This was strange to me for a morning crowd. Neither bad nor good. Food and variety is available. I had a fresh made breakfast roll. It was ok. I took home 3 of the pies. Again just ok. I can recommend the Apple slice pastry. Nothing stand out, which is a shame. It reminds me of an empanadas made with pastry dough so that its flakey like a Croissant. You can get a drink, either a bottle of local, soda or Australian friendly drinks, or fountain. They sell lots of Australian or foreign snacks and sweet pastries as well. I tried a brownie. Wasn't a big fan or it, so try something else. It looked way better than it tasted. There is seating inside, but can get crowded. Parking: seat parking is available. There is a parking lot semi behind the restaurant and then. Across the square there are parking garages. Parking is never an issue for me here. Service: it was okay. That's why I did 4 stars. The cashier was semi rude and not very friendly. read more

First of this mob uses an outdated, inaccurate idioticv AVS thing that apparently knows where people live and what address their banks have for them than they do!! In short - they use a system that dfeclines your cards so you can't even order from them to begin with. I did get one order from this lot (via paypal) and have to agree with what a lot of other expat Aussies, like me, have said - what this lot make is NOTHING like what a real Australian Pie or Sausage Roll is like. I ortdered their Curry Pies and they were dry and I think the closest the pie got to the curry was the bottle the curry was in - bland, dry with virtually NO CURRY taste to them at all. Their sausage rolls were marginally better. They were jumbo size (to go with their price) but were also dry and tastless. Hopefully one day an actual Australian Company will be able to import REAL Australian Pies, Pasties and Sausage Rolls intot his country so Americans can taste the real thing andf not some cheap, over priced rip off! read more

I stopped in here a couple of weeks ago and had a great experience! The store itself has a bit of an identity crisis....it's not sure if it's a cafe, grocery store or bakery? It's kind of all 3? There are only 4-5 small tables to sit at so seating is limited but the selection of fresh items to buy in the bakery display cases is wonderful. All sorts of meat pies, cookies, pastries, breads. In addition to several grocery shelves with imported Aussie food items they also have a couple of frozen cases with a bunch of frozen meat pies, sausages and meats you can buy. The service was warm, welcomming and friendly and everyone working there seemed really nice and helpful. My only complaint (if I had to list one) was that there is only 1 register and when it gets crowded, you have to wait in a rather long line to cash out (like I did). But other than that, this place is great. The food was delicious, the selection is really nice and the service was awesome. This is a daggy little place, but that, in a very 80s sort of way, is it's charm. There is a good range of decorative memorabilia adorning the place, some of it could do with a scrub, but again, it's absolutely of a Bluebird Cafe style. Older Aussies will understand the reference, for others think nice 50s American diner. Culturally important but still, a bit tired. The boss Nev is a nice guy who enjoys a chat about Aussie cultural icons. The little shiela working the register was very helpful and cheery, the other bloke was a bit quiet and the older woman was plain unpleasant. The seating is pleasant, the shelves are stocked with loads of Aussie foods, and an equivalent amount of foods from South Africa, and heaps from England. But, we went in for a pie. My wife is American and has never had a genuine footy grade Aussie meat pie. I have had thousands and, I don't mind saying, I'm a bit of a Connie-sewer (mate). The meat pie was sensational and as good as I have eaten anywhere. The steak and kidney and pepper and steak pies were equally fabulous. The pastie was good but not great and the coffee was pretty good. So, we needed Maltesers, other choccies and lollies for the rest of our trip...and we needed some goodies for 'afters' when we got home to Nashberg. The lamingtons were very good, and the vanilla slices were very ordinary. But that could merely be personal preference. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Nev's cafe and I shall make a point of visiting on subsequent trips. And, I'll definitely put in a big order for Australia Day on January 26th. read more

Recently - Yelp posted a notice asking reviewers to take it easy on restaurants - as many of them are struggling with the 'new normal' - and I completely understand that. Each time I post a 1 or 2 star review - I ask myself - a couple of times - if my rating or the issues I experienced were COVID related and if so - I adjust my rating accordingly. For instance, I recently reviewed Longhorn's and while I found their take-out process frustrating and disjointed - the overall poor rating was a result of server being so condescending and snarky about it. But I digress - I used to LOOOOVE this place. I would brave my fear of turning down one-way streets and parallel parking - just to visit this spot once every month or two! About a year and half ago - I noticed that the fish portion got considerably smaller. Still didn't complain because it was still quite filling. What I didn't love was the fact the the fish would be sometimes 'ooze' batter when you bit into it - as though they pulled it from the fryer too soon. And the handcut fries were ALWAYS super dark - as though the oil needed changing. I called on Thursday right at 3:27pm. I wanted to place an order, then walk inside to pick it up. When I called, the cashier said, "NO! I'm sorry ma'am but we're not taking phone orders because we're closing in 15 minutes. I explained that I was outside and simply wanted to avoid coming in to their space twice (due to COVID). She told me that was fine, but I needed to come in. Shoulder shrug. I go in and she's complaining to herself that someone had already shut down the grill and taken the baskets to the back. I asked her if that meant I couldn't order my fish and chips. She laughed and said No, told me I could go ahead and order. I told her that according to my phone it was only 3:30, so I asked did they close at 3:45pm or stop taking orders for hot food at 3:45pm and she said that stop taking orders for food that has to be cooked at 3:45pm. When I apologized for coming in so late and explained that I'd just left the courthouse, she said 'no problem' and said that it had been extremely slow that entire day. FYI - there was one elderly lady sitting at a booth eating and playing a game on her phone (I think). Once I placed my order, I went back to my car to wait. When I came back in at the allotted time - my food was ready. I was so excited to tuck into it. I bit in the first piece of fish and all I could taste was salt. It was covered in large specks of coarse salt. I brushed it off with a napkin and tried another bite. It still tasted super salty. I tried one of my fries even though they didn't look very appealing. The fries were ok - but I wasn't able to eat the fish. I know everyone has an off day - but that day marked my 8th or 9th visit where the fish, fries or both were 'off' - and even though the cashier was jovial and friendly once I came inside - her phone demeanor was definitely a bit hostile. If you've only had 3 customers all day, how about you do your best to NOT chase off your 4th customer? Sadly - I'm gonna have to cross these guys off my list. But MAN! back when the food was good - it was off the charts! read more

Marietta Square has many restaurants, I need to go there more often. Australian Bakery is located on the south side of the square. This restaurant is known for their Australian meat pies. These are small, yet filling pies that are filled with meats and different ingredients depending on the type of pie you order. There are over 22 varieties to choose from. Everything is made from scratch in-house, including the crust. The pies are priced from $4.40 to $5.00 each. They also have specials written on a whiteboard by the register. Yesterday, it was a steak, cheese, and onion pie with a house salad and drink for $7.95. I tried the following: Australia's original pie - ground sirloin beef cooked in gravy Ned Kelly pie - sirloin steak and gravy with egg, bacon, and cheddar Australian sausage roll - ground beef with special seasoning While we were trying to decide what to order, the owner told us which pies had just come out from the oven. The kitchen is open so you can take a peek behind the counter and see the employees working with all the meat pies and pastries stacked up. The food came out lightning quick. It arrived at our table before we even sat down. I don't know what type of gravy they cook with their ground beef, but it's delicious. The inside of the pie was piping hot. The Ned Kelly pie had a freshly cracked egg on top. I wasn't as big of a fan of this one. I think I prefer the simpler original pie. The sausage roll was very good. The menu describes it as a cross between a hot dog and a corn dog, but I disagree. The meat is much softer and the bread is way flakier. The seasoning in the beef made it flavorful and savory. The restaurant also sells Australian sandwiches, salads, and desserts. I'd like to come back and try some. In addition, they sell an assortment of packaged Australian food products and toys, such as stuffed koala bears and kangaroos. I didn't see any boomerangs, though. Like just about every other business in Marietta Square, Australian Bakery Cafe occupies old store space, giving it a quaint feel. The ceiling is adorned with flags representing various British territories and the walls have painted murals and giant photographs of Australian landmarks. read more

The Marietta Square is my new home away from home!!! Scoutmob brought me to this Australian Bakery Cafe for lunch yesterday. My lunch buddy and I are always looking for something different. The look of the place was extremely cute, very cultured. I didnt like that I was next in line and some gentleman from the back came out and started assisting the person behind me, with there food items. Do betta! My first experience with Sheppard's Pie was a great one. It was everything I imagined when reading the description. I also order the Dundee Turkey combo with potato salad instead of chips to go and a german chocolate brownie. Everything was good except the potato salad. I'm not a fan of the potato salad at all. I keep getting mixed reaction on whether the potatoes are suppose to be undercooked or not. I have no clue, but I almost took it back, I was expecting chunky but not crunchy. read more

This is a place that I've often been curious about but never tried, because usually whenever I go to Marietta Square, it's usually the evening and I'm usually going to Two Birds or whatever bar to drink. But I was getting a little stir crazy, and I was feeling like I hadn't done anything over a staycation, so I was determined to at least get some food from somewhere I hadn't been before, and Australian Bakery Cafe fit the bill of a place to try that wasn't too far for me, and gave me an excuse to crawl out of quarantining. Australian Bakery Cafe is right in the heart of Marietta Square, on the southern section of the center from Glover Park. There's plenty of street parking surrounding the area, and it's a very walkable area. Entering the business, there are a few booths, and I'm not sure whether it's deliberate, or to discourage people from dining in the current pandemic world, but there's big shelf full of trinkets and treats that I can only surmise are Australian in origin, and only like two booths where people can dine in. Alternatively, there's outdoor seating. Because I didn't really want to spend too much time inside a building where the random no-masker was coming and going, I was quick to place an order and stay as far away from others as I could. I ordered a Cape York sandwich which is chicken and avocado, and naturally I had to get some baked sweets. Food is made to order, which is normally a good thing to ensure freshness, but frankly I just wanted to get out as quickly as possible; this is not a knock by any stretch of the imagination and if I were smarter, I'd have placed an order to-go ahead of time, but it might take a minute, especially if there are orders queued up ahead of you. Anyway, I got my food, and I took it home to eat; the Cape York Chook and Avocado was perfectly fine, tasted freshly made, and the bread was of good quality, but the overall flavor of it was kind of bland. As for sweet stuff, I got a vanilla slice, a pavlova and some rum balls to share with my wife. The rum balls were like sweeter and heartier donut holes, but were pretty good. The vanilla slice was decent, but in my opinion nothing particularly special. But the pavlova was easily the best of the sweets, with a soft meringue topped with some berries. An easy choice to get again on a future visit. Overall, this is one of those reviews where I have to re-iterate that three stars doesn't look impressive, but the description of A-OK is pretty exacting how I felt about my experience. The location is very nice, the service was friendly, the cost isn't egregious, but the quality of the food that I tried really only amounts to an honest three-star in my opinion. This doesn't mean that I wouldn't go back however, as there were other things on the menu that seemed intriguing, and I think it would be fun to delve into their variety of savory pies. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone seeking something different, and hopefully one middle-of-the-road experience isn't indicative of the flavor profiles of Australian food. read more

MEAT PIES FLY Every year we attend an Australia Day party in Chicago and every year we have these fantastic authentic Aussie meat pies from Atlanta! What? Can you hear the record scratch happening right now!? Yeah these things are the real deal. You don't have to go down under to enjoy these tasty treats because they will ship them to you anywhere in the United States and that's how they got to Chicago. The pies come frozen and bake up perfectly in the oven. They have about twenty different varieties to choose from and even include a pie identification chart on there website which comes in handy during the party. Recently we tried five different pies: Lamb & Curry, Steak & Onions, Steak & Guinness, Steak & Cheese and Steak & Kidney. I really loved the Lamb and Curry because it was extremely different from the typical steak pies. I also decided to try the kidney too and it was really good. In fact, the steak and kidneys are ground up together so it's hard to actually taste just kidney. Don't be afraid of the kidney because it was very tasty. The pies bake up perfect every time. They are juicy on the inside and flakey on the outside. It will be hard to stop at just one bite. We typically bake 5 different ones at a time and then cut them up into four equal squares. This way everyone can have a taste of each pie and find their favorite bite. They even have sausage rolls too. You gotta order some of those too. They come in bite size or full sausage roll. We get the bite size ones because they are a perfect treat. Here's a fun fact: They even make the meat pies for the Australia Embassy in DC. That's pretty cool if you ask me and shows how authentic the pies really are. So if your looking to throw your own Australia Day party then order your pies from here.
