We made reservations for Wednesday night. It was our first time dining at Austria Hof. It is a charming little restaurant/hotel near Canyon Lodge at Mammoth Mountain. We walked in and were immediately greeted and escorted to our table. The hostess was very friendly. Our sever Monica was very attentive and professional. She immediately brought us water, bread and butter. The bread was served with warm and it was very tasty. We ordered two dirty martinis. They were served properly and were delicious. For dinner we decided to order the Bauernschmaus German Sampler for two - Pork and veal schnitzel, kassler ripchen, smoked bratwurst and Polish sausage, potato pancakes, spaetzle, red cabbage and sauerkraut. $82. It was very good. There was plenty of food and we even took home leftovers. We will visit again next time we are in mammoth. read more

We visited Austria Hof on Monday, 2/23, as we do during our multiple snowboarding trips to Mammoth each year. We typically sit at the bar and have always had a great experience--until this visit. My husband ordered a pizza and I ordered the chicken Caesar salad. His pizza was brought out approximately 15 minutes before my salad. When he politely asked Scotty, the bartender, if the pizza could be kept warm and brought out when my salad was ready, Scotty responded by asking what I had ordered. Upon hearing it included chicken, he said, "Oh, it's because she ordered chicken on her salad. Chicken takes a long time. If you want a restaurant experience, then you need to sit in the restaurant, not at the bar." We were honestly shocked by the tone and comment, especially since we have always sat at the bar and never experienced poor service before. Thankfully, Katie noticed what was happening, came over promptly, took my husband's plate, apologized, and ensured both dishes were brought out together shortly afterward. Unfortunately, after this interaction, Scotty and the other bartenders appeared to ignore us. We were not asked how our food was, and we sat with empty beer, wine, and water glasses for an extended period. There were multiple opportunities to check in or offer another round, but none were taken. Instead, we observed Scotty dancing behind the bar and taking a shot of liquor while we were being overlooked. Katie, the hostess, and Casey were all kind, apologetic, and professional--they are true assets to this restaurant. However, Scotty's behavior was disappointing and unprofessional. Came in and ordered a Duck Confit pizza to take back to my room. The pizza was very thin with a great crunch. The duck was tender and juicy, and the cheese was savory and well balanced. I do wish it had a bit more tomato sauce and was slightly juicier overall. When we came in, the lady working there helped us quickly and was very friendly. Came here in Mammoth craving something hearty, and this definitely hit the spot. The German food felt authentic and satisfying, especially after a long day outside. I ordered the Kassler Rippchen, and even though it was described more like a pork chop, it actually reminded me more of ham: smoky, tender, and really flavorful. The mashed potatoes were excellent too: creamy, well seasoned, and not just an afterthought on the plate. I had a Hofbräu Original with dinner, which paired perfectly. The entrance was a bit confusing. You enter from the street into the restaurant and then make a left and a right and you're just kind of in the middle of the restaurant. We were greeted by a friendly host who took our name and confirmed our reservation. A moment later a man in a polo shirt arrived and asked us if we had a reservation which was weird and he wasn't particularly friendly, and then the host returned, asked for menus and took us to our table. Our table was a very large booth with high seat backs, and dim moody lighting. Very intimate, fairly romantic ambiance. We were greeted by our waiter, placed our drink order and discussed the menu briefly before putting in our food order. We had the sample for "two" although to be fair, the sampler could easily feed 3-4 people. They were out of pork chops, so we had veal & pork schnitzel, smoked sausage, polish sausage, potato pancakes, veggies, sauerkraut, and a beer each. Overall the food was delightful, and we took a fair amount of it to go and had it for dinner the following night. I will say I'm not a huge fan of polish sausage, and its lack of snap, but we put it in the air fryer and it was great lol Overall a great experience, not overly pricey, friendly staff, and I would recommend it if you're in Mammoth looking for a hearty meal or intimate dinner. read more

We've never been to this restaurant before and was looking for a very good dinner and was willing to pay for it. I had the "Premium" ribeye steak dinner (52) and Sassy had the rack of lamb (58). I asked what grade the premium ribeye was but couldn't get a good answer. Apparently it had the Premium size with the price but thats about it. It was cooked medium rare, exactly how I wanted it. But the chewy connective tissues and abundance of grissel kept me from giving 5 stars. Sassy's lamb was cooked very nice but the seasonings were off just enough to take off another star. Food was delicious traditional Alpine fare. Ambiance was chalet style and very fitting. Service was above and beyond 5 We were there during a classic Mammoth blizzard and we could not get a cab and the hotel had closed down their shuttle. The restaurant is run but dumb inconsiderate people. We stayed at the hotel. We had reservations. We sat in the room waiting for over 2 hours for our reservation time after skiing. They had plumbing issues all day and knew in advance they did not plan on opening the restaurant but did not call anyone to tell them they were closed. Waited until we got there five minutes prior to our reservation time to tell us. They said we can go to the village. It's night of lights, fireworks show, busiest night of the year, all restaurants are packed. I have a family of four to feed. We could have gone down to the village 2 hours earlier had they called us to tell us they were closed. They had our phone number for the reservation. read more

I have been coming to this restaurant for years. I plan my Mammoth trips around it. That is how much I like this restaurant. But tonight I was saddened by my experience here. Upon arrival, I asked about the corkage and was advised it was $40 . I don't know what to say about this. I was stunned. You see, better, more upper class restaurants in Calabasas and Westlake Village don't charge a $40 corkage. I couldn't help but think... "the nerve". So, I ordered a very nice Pinot Noir and was content. The soup arrived and was very good. But then my main course arrived. The Goulash. At least half the meat had so much fat I had to spit out of my mouth each piece as inedible. Ick. And my fav, the spaetzle was dry and cool to the taste. Ah, such disappointment. The pièces de résistance of the night was the bill, which I uploaded. It shows two amounts due. When I asked my server why, she explained, if I paid with a credit card, I would be charged an extra fee. I suppose if I had been fore-warned I might have considered going to an ATM, because, seriously, who carries around that much cash these days? So, no advanced warning by them. How often do you see this on a bill? For me, this was a first. I don't understand what has happened to this restaurant: below average food quality, excessive corkage fees, and extra charges for using a credit card... so, I thought it important to share this information with readers who may want to find an ATM before dinner! The delightful smell of excellence hits ya right as ya come in the door ....... I am UBER picky about my German food and this place has yet to disappoint! My lovely wife (even pickier than me) looks forward to coming here with me and she too leaves well satisfied! Trust me - we are food snobs - and don't revisit places that suck. We weren't really impressed Tables fill up quickly in the bar. Reservations are a must if you want to sit in the dining room. Service is pretty good. The place folks up fast and bar is first come. Everything we tried was delish, from the best pretzel ever to the goulash that we asked for more bread so we can soak up the broth. The highlight was the elk rack - from Kiwi Land. On 2/15 the bar was not even crowded and it took 20 minutes before finally being recognized. Then throughout our meal we were ignored. Whether or not you agree with my comments, most restaurant owners understand that they are in the hospitality business and serving customers like me. At a minimum, an owner should demonstrate some skill in service recovery or at least offer polite professionalism. If you truly cannot accept criticism, simply don't respond at all. As owner of the restaurant, your unprofessional response is now posted for other potential diners to read-- and it may well discourage them from choosing an establishment that attacks rather than values customer input. This does not reflect well on Austria Hof. Many people, myself included, have overlooked a negative review about some restaurant or hotel, and reconsidered patronage AFTER seeing a thoughtful apology or a genuine invitation to return. By contrast, your dismissive reply not only alienates possible new diners but sets a poor example for your staff, from the top on down. You inform me that my dinner was in a dining room, and not a church. I have dined in enough restaurants to realize the difference. My party and I were not seeking an absolutely quiet experience but had expected to be able to easily converse. While Austria Hof may have 40 acoustic ceiling tiles to ensure a comfortable sound experience, these tiles were not enough to overcome the extremely loud party near us. We were unable to converse without shouting at each other, not the best way to relax and enjoy a meal and conversation with friends. You also said that the dining room was full, on a Saturday night on a holiday weekend, but this was not the case when my party was there. The restaurant had a respectable number of patrons, but there were only 2 other parties in our area at the time. The amount of noise generated around us was not relative to the number of diners. Additionally, you make a dismissive suggestion that I go out to dine on a slower day of the week at a lower-rated one star restaurant that would be quieter than your busy higher-star restaurant. You then compound your insult by assuming that your food was probably more expensive than what I am used to paying, since California is a very expensive place. You know nothing about my spending abilities or that I am a California native well aware of its economy. Such remarks reveal not only your poor judgment but also a shocking disrespect for Austria Hof customers--particularly in your condescending assumption that I and my party were provincial outsiders lacking resources or the experience to belong in your establishment. I am no novice to fine dining, and am not afraid to spend for it either. In short, your response only reinforced my disappointment in Austria Hof. Respect for customers is the foundation of hospitality, and your response makes it clear that you have lost sight of that. read more

Went to the bar to have a few appetizers and was the worst service and food . We sat at a table by the way in the bar .The bartenders are the waiters, bartenders and clean up . There were 2 bartenders and one food runner. The food came out cold and waited for drinks for 20 min . The only good thing was the stuffed mushrooms. read more

I'm so happy my husband booked this place for my birthday this year! The service here is the best I would say. She's so welcoming, friendly and helpful. The foods are nice, we enjoyed everything! Especially the elk steak, I really love how it cooks, the sauce is amazing. Also thank you so much for the birthday cake, it's an apple strudel, so delicious!
