absolutely love this place. my sewing machine was having tension problems and I tried fixing it for years. tried everything that the internet could recommend but I finally caved and brought it here. it was a cheap machine that was given to me as a gift so I was nervous about being charged more than the machine was worth. These guys offered a free consultation and called me to let me know an estimate of how much the repair would be. once i gave them the go ahead, they said "if we find anything else wrong with the machine during repair, we'll call you before continuing". LOVE THAT. got the machine back two weeks later and it's working better than new. next time something is wrong, this is the first place I will go with my machine. read more

(With apologies to "The Homecoming" [1971]) Yes. Don't give up on that vacuum cleaner that has suddenly stopped working. Take it to A.S. & V. They will fix it, fix it right (other shops are NOT as competent) and clean it before returning it to you, and at a fair price. Super friendly staff who will give you honest opinions about vacuums and sewing machines. If they can fix your machine, they will. If it is beyond hope, they will honestly tell you that it must be given the Gang Gong, and will give their best advice on quality replacements (They do not sell machines that are simply cheap. Their recommended machines have value, because they work well and are durable. In the end, that saves you time and frustration, as Mama Walton was experiencing.). Among the few brands that meet their vacuum all-star criteria are Reccar (made in USA! USA! USA!), Miele (top-rated by CR and the NY Times Wirecutter Section) and Simplicity. Small problems with A.S.& V. are the sketchy parking in Collingswood (They will tell you to park RIGHT at the corner on Collings, where it meets Haddon Ave. Do not worry; you won't get a ticket.) and that they still insist that you wear a mask inside the store; they will provide one if you forget yours. Please: No more machines tossed into the yard. Take your "broken" vacuum or sewing machine to Authorized Sew and Vac. They will heal it. Listen to John Boy. Appropriately, they called us before any work was started to give us a price for the repair. Rather than replacing an entire feature of the vacuum that was faulty, they used a method that saved us money and worked efficiently for the vacuum cleaner. Have come in here a few times for smaller items like specific vacuum bags. Like to patronize small businesses and they've always been able to help us. Prices are a little higher than you might find for the same item online, for instance, but you know the money is staying local plus you can get it same day. They have a free 15 minute parking spot on the side street right next (across from Tortilla Press) to them if you just have to run in and pick something up. read more

I rarely use Yelp but this is worthy. Mark, the owner of the Collingswood Authorized Sew and Vac, is such a great guy! My 40+ year old Singer sewing machine finally decided to kick the bucket toward the end of making 20 face masks. I finished the masks by hand but I wanted a new machine to replace it. I quickly discovered that the stock of sewing machines at Amazon, Target, Walmart etc was nonexistent, I guess due to the pandemic. So I called Mark. He had a great sale going on, and I ended up with a Baby Lock Molly with a needle threader : ) - much better than my old Singer. And he offered to drive it to my house. When the faithful Pfaff I bought from them 25 years ago started giving me trouble I emailed them to see if anyone was servicing things while they were closed due to the Corona Virus. So while I haven't gotten my sewing machine back yet, I need to share a story about this lovely establishment. I just got my grandmother's sewing machine from the 60s and it looked like it needed every repair in the book. I had to get the machine out of the sewing cabinet and the guys on the phone said that if I had any trouble doing that I could just call them and they would walk me through it. The free estimate of repair was completed within 24 hours of me dropping the machine off, and they told me a part was back-ordered so it would take 2-3 weeks. I had a figure in my mind that if the repair was more than that amount (I did some research) I would just buy a new one, and they were under that amount. I am not the most patient person, so a week later I called to get a status update; nothing had changed but they were happy to speak to me. The next day I got a call and the gentleman said that he found the backordered part in a different machine (apparently it was ok to have a used one, it isn't a part that wears down it's just fine or broken) and he was going to surprise me with it being done early, but now he needed my permission to get another small part repaired, although it wouldn't cost me extra money. And it would be fixed a week earlier than expected. How nice is that?? There's a sew and vac down the street from me and they are not nearly as nice or as accommodating as this shop is. The gentleman was also happy to talk to me about the actual value of my machine and if I should replace it, and how much a comparable machine would cost. I'm a pretty good judge of character and I would so much rather drive a bit and work with people that go the extra mile like this. Hopefully my machine will work perfectly and the next time I'll need their services is when I'm replacing it in 5-10 years! read more

The job was done faster than expected, and I am completely pleased with the results. The service upon pickup was as good as the dropoff. Over the years, I've always been able to depend on these guys. Vacuum breaks down right before guests arrive, natch. Sewing machine breaks down when I'm on a quilting deadline--Murphy's Law. This is your posse: Friendly, trustworthy, and they really know their stuff. Mark, Lawrence, Jim, and the "silent partner"--Jim at the repair bench. They'll ask you what you need, and you can always follow their recommendations, because it's based on knowledge of the equipment, of the manufacturer, and of the track record for repairs. They go the extra mile, too, loaning me a sewing machine, teaching me how to avoid problems. Bought 2 vacuums and a serger, and will be buying my next high-end sewing machine from Collingswood Sew & Vac. My sewing machine needed two parts replaced. One part was out-of-stock and they were unable to tell me when would be in stock. In today's world of computers and inventory management, I find this very hard to believe. I called to check in a few times because I had not heard anything. The last time I called, I expressed my disbelief that after six weeks in the shop, they were unable to find the part or, at the very least, let me know when the part would come in. The man I spoke with told me that it was not an ideal situation for him because my machine was just sitting in his shop and he could not get paid until the part came in. I am pretty sure not having my sewing machine for an indefinite period of time was more of an inconvenience for me than for him. After two months in the shop, I picked it up, took it to another shop, and within a week I had it back. read more

I had previously gone to The Other Repair Shoppe a couple of times to get my vacuum fixed. I would leave each time after paying a big bill. The vacuum worked, I guess, but I got nothing extra. The last time the guy at T.O.R.S. said he could fix the vacuum's power head, but he couldn't repair the headlight. Huh? What does the dumb little headlight wiring have to do with the complex wiring of the powerhead? Previously, he had just put a 25W bulb in it...and it burned out. I looked it up and put the 15W bulb in it that it required. It lighted. So I tried Authorized when the vacuum went on the fritz again, the powerhead that T.O.R.S. "fixed" was running intermittently. A.S.&V. diagnosed the trouble, fixed it, deodorized it, cleaned the vacuum inside and out (As John, Paul, George and Ringo would say, "It's a clean machine".) and put a new bag in it. A small bill? No. But A.S.&V. repaired it right and better than I expected, plus the two guys working there throw in snappy banter with customers and Collingswood street parking tips gratis. How do they put it --- "Drop the crevice tool."? Search no more for vacuum repair. read more

Came here under my Mom's recommendation to get my Singer Machine fixed. ( She says the place has been there forever.) I was afraid my Machine was "Done for" , But they have it running like New ! I also saw a new Janome Computer Embroidery Machine I liked, I looked it up and they have it at $840.00 CHEAPER than on Amazon ! ( so I am really tempted...) Small place, But a Lot of machines and Kind of a "small town" atmosphere , Parking can be tough - too many restaurants in Collingswood I guess.? (LOL) read more
