Auto Star Smog Check & Repair in Lake Forest, CA did me wrong by falsifying prices and I was already out $60 when the check should have been closer to $35. Then I find this place. A coupon that reads $28.75 + $8.75 for most cars. I get skeptical again and do some research. The owners have kept the same price for decades and I was not able to find a better price for smog check (STAR certified) anywhere. I walked in, had a lovely chat with the two gentlemen in the front, paid $37, and left within 15 minutes. The place is friendly, transparent, fast, and affordable. It was a bit hectic as you cannot make appointments but encourage you to come in but had to wait as there was about two people ahead of me. Their charge for a smog check is fairly reasonable. However, their work was super inefficient. The mechanic that was assigned to work on my vehicle was barely able to move due to age (with due respect). My car was hooked to the machine, and the process just didn't start for roughly 20 minutes. When I followed up on a time estimate, he almost shouted at me. Very unfriendly. It felt like that I owed him a million. When the work was done, he even didn't bother to back my car out of the bay. Very unprofessional. I saw him even use my personal hygiene products in the car. Very unethical. Not a pleasant experience. They smeared grease and brake dust all over the side of my suv; then denied what I witnessed them do. They further lied about it! because it looked really bad like a dent! I asked them to clean it up they wouldn't...! saying "I was no where near your car" Liar -- you're dirty fingerprints are still on it! Finaly "Luis" a younger guy helper came forward with a micro-fiber cloth and cleaning fluid to help. Went here for a smog check. After the car passed, I was called over and told my rear brakes were down to 15% and I should replace the pads right away. The guy said he'd give me a discount if I did the work right then but the discount would not apply if I came back later. Mind you they never removed either of the rear tires to do a thorough inspection. I passed on having the work done and brought the car to my trusted mechanic. I have 50% left on the pads!!! I've only had smog certifications done here, but they've been relatively fast and a good value (get the coupon from their website). Today I had my pick-up smogged in under 45 minutes while I waited, for $47 out the door (including the certificate). Note the the type of vehicle and its age affect the cost; e.g., trucks cost more than cars, and pre-2000 vehicles cost more. There are chairs inside, but I don't expect much of an environment if you wait. I go out the covered patio area and read. After the smog test, I was asked if I'd had my spark plugs changed before (expected every 30K for my vehicle per the manual), and fortunately I had my service history handy (I keep a spreadsheet), and the answer was "yes". My advice to anyone getting their car serviced is to have your records ready so you don't get a redundant service. read more

I called Auto Check Center today because they are close to my business and I needed to get one of my Company vehicles smog checked for registration renewal. They answered the phone promptly, answered my questions, and when I asked to make an appointment, he said, "First-come, first served and right now would be a good time to bring the car over," so I did. The paperwork was quick and easy, the price had been previously quoted, I asked how long and he said about 30 minutes. I walked back to my office and about 20 minutes later I got the call that my car was ready to pick up. No surprises, just good and quick service! I wouldn't recommend this smog center. The technician/front desk person tried to foist an unneeded repair by failing the car for visual inspection. The offending item was epoxy on the air intake supplemental hose to secure the clamp. It is funny that they would mark as "Not applicable" for the air injection system visual category but would fail in the "Other emissions related components". It gets even curious. The epoxy fix was done four years back. This center passed my car in 2022 but with a different technician. The car also passed smog in 2020 at a different center. I had been using this center for the last ten years. It is time to move on. I have filed a complaint with BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) and will be doing so at BBB. Update: Got the smog test done through the BAR referee program and passed. Just paid the certification fee. read more
