I've been buying tires from Tire Rack for about 20 years, having the tires sent to local…read moreinstallers. Never a problem, until this time with Right Away Tire of Lynnwood. When I ordered the tires on Dec 24th, Tire Rack quoted $156.00 for installation by Right Away Tire. Adding 10.1% sales tax (Bellevue, WA), $156 would be $171.76. That's high, but the prospect of having a mobile installer install it quickly was appealing. With more snow imminent, and with poor tires on the car which I'd just bought used, I wanted to get them installed ASAP. This mobile installer would be faster, right? Wrong. Very wrong. With the tires on the way, I called to try to set up an appointment. They said no, we'll call you when they arrive. A day after tracking showed the tires had arrived, they still hadn't called, so I called them. I was floored to learn that the soonest appointment they could give me was 10 days away. I would have had them installed sooner at the non-mobile installers I've used before. The scheduler told me they got "LOTS of cancellations" (emphasis hers) and put me on the list to be called when there was a cancellation. But there was no such call. I checked partway through to confirm that I was on the list; she said I was. I had to wait the full 10 days for them to come--11 days after the tires were delivered to them. When the Right Away Tire installer arrived on Jan 14th, the guy tried to charge me over $270, about $100 more than expected (I don't recall the exact amount he said). His body language as he told me the price suggested he was expecting pushback. No wonder; that's about double the going rate. When I objected that it was much more than Tire Rack quoted, he blamed me, saying I must not have been paying attention to what the Tire Rack pages said, and not noticed additional required charges beyond the base charge, mentioning the tire disposal fee as an example. I walked through placing another order at  Tire Rack, choosing the same tires of the same size and the same installer, reading every word about installation and following all links (I stopped right before finalizing the sale). As far as I can tell, I was correct that the charge should have been $156 plus tax -- including tire disposal. The tires were installed just two business days later by a nearby shop. For $127.20 before tax. I tested them at 70mph; smooth as silk. Oh--the installer told me that I would not have had to wait the 11 days after delivery if I had bought the tires from Right Away Tire instead of just using them as the installer; he said they would have been out here "right away" (as soon as they recieved the tires) if I had done that. Interesting. He also said Tire Rack was a very bad tire seller and often sold defective tires. Well, I haven't had a bad experience with their tires over the last 20 years. Another thing was weird. For four days before the tires were delivered, the tracking in the morning showed that the shipper (On Trac) had them out for delivery. Then that afternoon instead of showing them delivered, the expected delivery date was changed to the next day. Meanwhile, other delivery trucks were driving by my house each day. And I was driving around myself. So, was On Trac really unable to drive the tires from Seattle to Lynnwood each of those four days? Or did On Trac drive them each of those days but found no one home at Right Away Tire to sign for delivery? While it was happening, I assumed something weird was going on with On Trac, but now I'd put my money on the latter.
