I purchased a 2012 Jeep Wrangler from this dealership for around $18,000. During the sales process, the staff was very friendly and welcoming to the family. I was told the vehicle came with a 24-month / 24,000-mile powertrain warranty, and I was reassured that if anything went wrong I could bring the vehicle back and it would be taken care of. Unfortunately, my experience after the sale has been the complete opposite. After driving the Jeep only about 2,200 miles, the vehicle broke down and had to be taken to a Jeep dealership for diagnosis. I was then informed that the vehicle needs a major repair to the powertrain wiring harness, which is estimated to cost about $5,000. Despite the fact that this issue involves the powertrain wiring, Berkeley Honda has refused to help with the repair and claims that the issue does not fall under the powertrain warranty. What has been even more frustrating is the lack of communication and accountability. When it was time to sell the vehicle, everyone was very responsive and helpful. But once the problem appeared, that support disappeared. Calls have gone unanswered and emails have been ignored. I have only made three payments on this vehicle before this major issue occurred. Now I'm facing a $5,000 repair bill on a vehicle I just purchased, and I've had to take BART to work while trying to figure out how to afford the repair. At this point I am filing complaints with the California DMV and other consumer protection agencies so the situation can be reviewed. My advice to anyone considering buying a used vehicle from Berkeley Honda: * Have a trusted third-party mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchasing * Carefully review what the warranty actually covers * Do not rely on verbal assurances during the sales process I regret trusting the promises that were made during the purchase. I had been looking for a couple of months for a Lexus RX. I found his ad in the morning before he opened, he answered the call anyways, he texted me photos upon arriving to work, and tested the electric trunk with me on the phone. He agreed for me to test drive it that am to my trusted mechanic (Jimmy at Precision Auto in San Leandro). Jimmy said he was impressed with the attention to detail and part choices for upgrades that Salem did to place it on the market. Said it was very clean, safe, reliable, and an excellent purchase choice! Jimmy also said the price was great, and so did Carfax. I immediately went to the bank and bought the vehicle! Salem was super organized and efficient and quick with the paperwork when I brought the cashier's check. The vehicle is for a nonprofit and Salem knew how to do all of the DMV paperwork appropriately! ALL three shops notified me that the ALL the tires needed to be changed because all four tires were worn out and unsafe and that the dealership should have never sold it to me in that condition. Note: I had a paperwork from all three shops indicating all this. I called Albany of Subaru and got the run around and even got hung up on and finally requested the GM and they scheduled me an appointment. At the appointment, they denied covering ALL four tires. So I requested a paperwork that stated they would cover it so that I can file a complaint with the California Bureau of Automotive Repairs and the Better Business Bureau. Finally they were able to cover all four tires BUT I still had to pay $140 for the alignment. NOW! My husbands outback car is having issues, which was purchased two weeks after mine.

He sat us down and tried to oversell us products that I continuously declined. A ceramic coating package, add-ons like door guards and splash guards, extended warranty packages----all that I declined. No matter how many times I politely declined, he just stared at me like he didn't hear me at all. Even one time he said one of the packages just couldn't be removed. There was a lot of back and forth of nothing---I decided to ask how long the offer is good for and that we would be leaving to check out another dealership. He went to his "manager" and magically came back with all add-ons removed. Then came next was the finance person, Don. There was nothing I found that I liked about Don. He was very untrustworthy with his verbiage. He chatted me up about my credit score and gave me accolades; as if to make me feel good about myself. Sir, I know what my credit score is because I'm the one who's actually building that credit. Then he started talking about an exclusive offer that is only offered to "people like me". He said the offer was a lower APR % but extended my contract even longer than my 3 year contract with Chase. And would also throw in a 2 year extended warranty. I asked him if this changes how much I am paying for the car and he said no. I asked is this offer complimentary..He said no. Well, something isn't adding up. Sounds very fishy. I did the math on my phone and he was selling me a $9000 extended warranty plan.......I immediately declined and lost all respect for this dealership. Don did not feel bad at all for how he chooses to word his schemes. He does not care about buyers at all. The cherry on top is that they continuously ignored my request to redeem my boyfriend's and my Visa gift card test drive offer. We came in on December 27th. It took them until the week of February 6th to get it all resolved. They also didn't redeem a $75 gift card for me. They only gave me $50 gift card. My boyfriend was able to get his $75 gift card but that took 1.5 months to accomplish. Let that sink in. This dealership is a joke. The only good things about this place are the cars.
