After bringing my car to the dealer to repair a brake light, they only replace the bulb and sent me on my way. However, that didn't correct the problem. The dealer also recommended thousands of dollars of other unrelated repairs (which were later determined unnecessary at this time by a different Volvo specialist). So, I brought my car to Auto Scandia and they quickly identified that the problem was pinched wiring between the frame of the car and cracked sheathing of the wiring. The repair was very affordable and completed the same day. The experience was so positive, my husband now brings his BMW here. And, I have returned for other repairs. I like that they are willing to fix things for a fraction of the cost when the dealer would typically just replace them for a much higher cost! read more

We've been taking my 2004 Volvo C70 to AutoScandia since we moved here in 2009. I have always found them to be thorough and professional. We don't drive the car a lot as I walk to work but on our most recent visit they called and told us that the tires had been on the car for eight years and were dry rotted. I was so relieved to hear this as I don't keep up with tire age just regular maintenance. I had no idea the tires were that old! EDIT: Bumping my review up to 5 stars. My Mercedes needed significant work done after the check engine light appeared. Their service advisor Wolfgang did a great job communicating with me each step of the way and working with my insurance adjuster to mitigate costs. Big shout out to Eddie their technician. His work breathed new life into the engine. It goes to 11 again! I like this shop. I've brought my Mercedes here twice for minor repairs. Both times I've left satisfied with the pricing and service I've received. They even have a shuttle to drop you off someplace local if you need it. My last visit to Autoscandia was to replace one of the rear tires. I had already taken it to the dealership in Tyson's Corner to have the B service done. I bought the car used here so this was in my comfort zone. At Tyson's I mentioned having a slow leak in the rear tire and was told I had *two* nails in it. Total cost to fix this and another tire with a bubble in the sidewall was $850. I declined and went looking for options. Autoscandia to the rescue. For my first time here I had the bubbled tire fixed for about $320. This is fair! Apathy set in, months go by, and the rear tire is definitely getting worse. I get an estimate over the phone in the, surprise, surprise, $300 ballpark. Deal. Turns out those "nails" were actually a single staple. Technically two holes, I get it, but let's not be dramatic. Even better news was I didn't need a new tire. A patch would do the job just fine. Total cost out the door was $45. I would give this place 4.5 stars if I could. Minor deduction for a couple reasons: 1. Parking here is tight. I worried my doors would get dinged. They didn't, but it would be great if they had a separate lot for overflow. 2. Both times I had work done, I had to call 30 minutes prior to closing to see if the car was ready. Yep, it sure was, but now I have to scramble to get there in time. It would be nice to see some improvement here. I'm coming back, but please, a heads up next time would be awesome. read more

I trust these guys. Fast, friendly service at a reasonable price. No sales pitch. Anytime I deal with auto-repair shops, I brace myself for astronomical quotes, especially today given that my car was really acting up. After all, I look like the ideal client to rip off, and in fact I have a bow in my hair today so I look very, very naive. The truth is that I know very little about cars but I drive a hard bargain and can negotiate anything without even breaking a sweat. I love arguing. Well, I didn't have to do that today. These guys diagnosed the issue of a misfire into one of the cylinders, spoke to me in a straightforward way, and even got in an extra part the same day and made the repairs in time for me to run an errand. Plus, their shuttle service was very nice indeed when we got all the way to my house and I realized I'd locked myself out. He said it happened all the time and totally set me at ease. Of course, my Saab part wasn't in stock--nobody stocks such parts, and the wait for them can be weeks. This shop took good care of my beloved old Saab. As the owner of a '94 Saab that has spend much of its time in the rusty land of NE and cities where drivers think the roads are actually giant bumper car arenas, I feel that my car needs a little TLC. Even more so when it is randomly breaking down during rush hour on NY Ave and then starting up again without a hitch a few minutes later. So I thought nothing of trekking out to VA from DC to a mechanic that billed itself as a Saab specialist with a Saab MASTER MECHANIC on hand. These guys are great. When they couldn't diagnose the problem the first time around after driving my car for a few days (they actually did, I took note of the odometer reading) they told me the truth and said that they didn't believe in guessing and replacing parts they may not need to be replaced. Within a week the problem got much worse and they took my car back in without an appointment. Luckily they diagnosed the problem right away and my car has been performing perfectly since. While the shop is not on a bus line, they will drive you over to the closest bus stop. The first time I needed a ride they drove my car to the bus stop, which gave me ample time to discuss the problem with the driver/mechanic. This made a lot of sense to me. BUT it takes a while to get from downtown DC to the shop - Metro to W Falls Church, then bus to Reston Town Center. On the plus side, this allowed me to see the wide variety of strip malls in the area. They give first-time customers 20% off. They give DC residents 10% off every time (except the first visit). Check the website and sign up for the newsletter for coupons. Even without the discounts the shop is still cheaper than dealer's I've been to. To those of you wondering why it took so long to diagnose the problem it was a faulty meter that was only occasionally faulty. It would be fine for weeks and then act up for an hour or a day and then be perfectly fine again. read more

Now, once again, better late than never, have to update the review - I call, late thinking "maybe" they can check my eye-balled low tire...nope, the guy that looks like the host of that show who's really loud (he's gonna kill me for the comparison - I love you!) says, nope, come on in - just got all 4 tires not cheap ones drop shipped about a year ago - so...of course I'm the Louis girl, but, ok...under pressure (kinda like the Bowie/Queen song) so, my friend tells me....there is something wrong with the tire - I'll be calling to figure out drop ship and put it on - but also - is it the tire or did I run something over (kinda careful on that one but around here - kinda hard to avoid! LOL - most easy to avoid Moose, Deer and most general animals - here - hard to avoid humans, cars and holy replace your brakes every 5 seconds! Guess who will be calling soon! If you're considering going to Auto Skandia, what are you waiting for, do it now. Auto Skandia helped me with a recently purchased used vehicle. It is a '99 Ford Econoline. Francisco in the state inspection department, was the most thorough and friendly and helpful vehicle inspector I have encountered. With a few key tips, I was able to resolve one of the two items that failed inspection, by myself. Already knowing that I would go to Auto Scandia for all of my needs, I went back to them to have the other failed safety inspection item fixed. This was a parking brake that would not engage at all. Upon having the rear parking brake inspected, Billy from Auto Skandia, informed me that the hardware was missing on the rear brake. It would need to be replaced, and this would be a considerable expense. I was impressed with the team's commitment to safety, premium quality service and success. Although I wanted to do something cheaply, just to pass the inspection, Billy was more concerned about my long-term safety, and informed me of the situation thoroughly. After okaying the work, and the Price quote, which was reduced down to $500, the auto Scandia shuttle took me home. Upon arriving home I received a call from Auto Scandia, informing me that after further investigation, they were able to find some parts that had been impossible to see initially. They were able to remove and clean the existing opposite side brake. The condition of the internals were good, and the brake was able to be adjusted in the necessary way to pass the inspection. The total price was half of what they quoted. It was under $250. I'm very happy with their service, and will be going back to them for all of my auto servicing needs. I've been through so many NOVA auto shops over the decades, and ultimately, they've all failed me, broken trust, or at least disappointed me enough to drop them. Finally, I've settled on a good one. I started using Scandia about 4 years ago for maintenance, periodically rotating 3-4 cars through oil jobs, filters, belts, inspections, etc. Last job was a big one - front axel replacement on a Honda. I can report all positive experiences. Highly recommended. A word to the wise: they are incredibly busy - you can't just drop in and expect service, even if you get there at opening time. I've been taking my car to local shops like VA Tire and Auto for small jobs for years and for major work I would always take my Acura to the dealership to make sure I'm getting the best labor/parts for critical repairs. Well, one visit to Autoscandia based on a friends recommendation changed my plans for car repair forever. Just like everyone has said before me, this shop truly is the most honest, experienced, competitively priced car shop in the area. People bring their high-end cars here because they have factory trained techs working there and their prices are easily 30% cheaper than the dealership -- so really, there is no reason for you to pay more at the dealership unless you really want a loaner car and a car wash (I doubt you'd want to pay 30% more for those services). There one downside to being a really good car repair shop, getting appointments for car repairs here are tough. You should call well in advance and get an appointment as soon as possible since their slots fill up very quickly. Anyway, I really like this shop and I will be bringing all my cars here for repairs. A reliable location for auto repairs and Virginia state and emissions inspections. I have been here several times over the past year for both minor and major repairs. The mechanic goes out of his way to identify the strange noises you are complaining about and the prices are fair. I recently still had a problem after having an expensive sensor replaced. They determined the new part was faulty and redid the repair quickly with no complaints or attempts to get more money. One great thing is that you can usually get your state inspections done without waiting in a long line. read more

AutoScandia has always been reliable, trustworthy, and fair everytime I use them. This review is mostly not about them (they are wonderful) but what happens when I dont go to them because I'm lazy. Recently I needed to get a state inspection and I wanted it done quickly so I took it to a repair shop close to me that used to be called Curries Auto but has been sold to Mr. Tire. My car is an old car and I wasn't surprised that it failed the state inspection. I meant the car is 10 years old and has 173,000 miles what did I expect? i ask the service guy how much? Mr. Tire tells me it's $2020 to fix it. Ouch, thats a lot of cash for something I wasn't expecting. So I tell the Mr. Tire service guy I'm going to have to shop that price around and see if I can get it done cheaper. Service guy taps on his computer for a few seconds then tells me he can now do it for $1574. 25% reduction with a few key taps? Ya didn't have to say "let me go talk to my manager" and see if you could do better? So what your telling me is you already inflated the price at least $500 because you had me over a barrel? I tell him thanks but I'm still going to shop the price around. That same day I take the car to AutoScandia who I've used in the past but its just further from home. I tell them its failed inspection and can they please give me a second opinion. AutoScandia comes back and tells me, yes, there is a problem and it's the same exact problem as Mr. Tire said it was. I take my Volvo S80 here. My only real alternative is to take it to the dealer, who is guaranteed to rip me off. Service --- Wonderfully competent. They don't employ 18 year-olds here in the shop like the dealers do. From customer service to mechanics, these guys know what they're doing with European cars. Price --- the only down side. Just a little cheaper than the dealer, but not by much. Still puts a dent in your pocket. Value for the money --- Medium-high. Worth it. read more

Top notch service from start to finish! I have been going to the dealer for servicing and brake repairs for my Range Rover, and decided to try AutoScandia. When I got there, the parking was very tight and an employee volunteered to park it for me. Given that the shuttle was not available that day, they Uber'd me back home while I waited. They committed to getting everything done by and a certain time and delivered! Gene was fantastic and made the whole process smooth and seamless. UPDATE: August 24th, 2015 The owner of Auto Scandia left the door open for me to contact them should I need any future service done to my car. After a long road trip followed by a bi-annual emissions test, I found my car still had two problems. It still wasn't driving smooth and it failed emissions. I contacted the owner. With open arms he asked me to bring him the car. He assigned the project to one of his master technicians. He also stayed engaged. With regard to it not driving smooth, they found all the wheels out of balance. And, they found components of the new front-end rebuild were not loaded correctly when installed which would have resulted in squeaks and squeals as well as premature failure. They have the highest quality wheel balance machine and they were able to balance my wheels without putting unsightly weights on the outside. They also have a special alignment rack and a tech who knows suspensions inside and out that quickly reinstalled those front end components correctly. The result, my car drives smooth as silk with no squeaks, and the new suspension should last at least another 22 years (the car is a '93 Mercedes 400 SEL). With regard to the emissions failure, the tech found the catalytic converter was not igniting, most likely due to dealing with a misdiagnosed ignition system problem (by a shop in Alexandria) that resulted in misfiring that went on intermittently for 3+ years, in some cases, for extended periods of time. We did order a new catalytic converter. In the meantime, the master technician went through a logical progression of steps that only someone with experience would know. With little tweaks, the master technician not only got the car running amazingly clean without the catalytic converter working... BUT, actually created the correct conditions within the catalytic converter to re-ignite it and come back to life. Now that is some serious tuning, troubleshooting and "know how". The result, my car drives cleaner than most cars on the road today and easily passed the emissions re-test. The diagnosis of this stuff, especially the latter, requires the right tools and technicians with the right experience. In all the shops I have tried since moving here in 2011, this is the first one I found with the right tools and the right technicians running those tools. The reviews are true, the repairs and service here are top notch. With respect to communication, both the owner and the master technician stayed engaged with me the whole time my car was with them. They communicated with me by email and phone. I especially appreciated them letting me email them the history of the prior repairs I had done to the car. They knew how to use those to short-cut diagnosing the problems. I don't find many shops take the time to listen to the customer. The owner and the master technician at AutoScandia did. With respect to the drop-off and check-out process, the receptionist behind the desk was so kind, sweet and attentive. Finally, with respect to price. They saved me a ton in not having to replace my catalytic converter. Plus, the part was going to have to come from Germany and there was no ETA on it. It could have come in three weeks or three months. Glas we were able to cancel that order. They charged me the exact time it took them to diagnose the problems and the standard charges for the repairs. There was absolutely no shenigans. I am bringing my cars back to Auto Scandia. I am bringing my parent's cars to Auto Scandia. My recommendation, get to know the family over at Auto Scandia. They're the real deal, not empty promises and shoddy incompetence. UPDATE: August 4th, 2015 Received a very nice email AND phone call from the owner of Auto Scandia. He was very sympathetic, if not empathetic, about the situation. He asked for details. He allowed me to tell him about the experience I had right after, at another highly rated shop, so he could learn and model from it. He was open to feedback. He gave me advice and suggestions about my car. He offered to work on my car. He did NOT offer excuses. That's actually big in my book. He accepted what had happened and he told me how he would fix the bigger problem with his business. Honestly, you don't really find many business owners like this, in my experience. As I mentioned, I wound up going to another highly rated shop. I had a completely different experience there and wound up leaving my car there after only 25 minutes of interaction, to have the front end rebuilt. As I mentioned in my original review, I never got to experience the service all the other reviewers spoke about. My experience has been four interactions (two in-person, one on the phone, and one in an email exchange) with the man behind that desk that interacts with customers (not good at all) and the business owner (absolutely amazing). read more

I have a BMW X5 that I have had serviced at BMW of Fairfax and Curry's Auto Shop (Chantilly). Autoscandia is by far much better than both of those at diagnosing problems correctly the first time and completing the work at a reasonable price. By reasonable, I mean significantly cheaper than the dealership or Curry's Auto Shop (which is actually more expensive than dealership, at least in Chantilly). Last Saturday, as it began to snow I got a flat tire a short distance from Autoscandia. I was surprised at how fast Mark the owner and Fransisco the auto inspection mechanic got me in the bay. They had to take the tire off my Suburban because it had unseated itself. They did a leak test and it showed my tire was leaking from around the rim upon closer inspection apparently the Chrome where it comes in contact with the alloy had begin to corrode and pit allowing small leaks on the tire. They were able to do a temporary repair on my tire so I can get to my appointment. After the tire was remounted, I asked, what I owed? Mark said it was no charge, I asked again, because who does anything for free in this town? He said no, in the spirit of Christmas it's on the house. In contrast to some other places that always push for more work ("we've put together a list of 6 things you need to have done"), AutoScandia comes back with "there's this one thing you'll need to take care of, but it can wait" or "you may decide it's not worth it because this car is kind of old". I moved to the area about 2 years ago and needed to have some maintenance done on my 2000 BMW. I read on Yelp where several of the local BMW dealerships are dishonest, overcharge or even say something needs to be fixed when it does not. Then I found Autoscandia, which had very high reviews, so I tried them out. I have been exceptionally pleased with them. I have been in several times for different issues (12-year-old car). Every time I have been there or talked with them on the phone I have experienced friendly, professional and knowledgeable service at the front desk, especially from Dan, as well as with their mechanics. I trust them. They let me know what is wrong with the car and how much it will cost before they work on it. They adhere to the agreed-upon mechanic work. They let me know when they see any issues that will need my attention in the future, and give me an approximate timeline of how long it will be before it needs to be addressed. They have been great at diagnosing problems correctly the first time. Recently I took my car in for the state inspection and it failed! It turned out to be worn-out wiring, which was also causing other problems. They could have overcharged me while "fixing" the other problems, but they didn't. I am so happy I found them! read more
