New Review: Came in here for a brakes (rotors, pads, sensors, and fluid flush). The car feels like a brand new car. No pulsating in the front rotors or pulling to one side when stopping. Upgraded to ceramic pads, which are quieter, have less initial bite, and great stopping power without the dust. Mel was fair and transparent with pricing with the breakdown between parts and labor. I ended up bringing my own parts because I like to try different brands other than OEM, but the install and timing were as promised. Mel also provides advice on what he thinks are upcoming repairs to keep in mind, so there are no surprises for the next repair. I don't stress when I bring a car to car to Mel. Previous Review: Car needed a new battery. I called up multiple dealers and independent shops who were a complete rip-off on the battery cost and the labor cost. I called up Autobahn and Mel picked up and was very courteous and fair with the pricing. I would normally replace the battery myself, but I was in a pinch and didn't have the registering tool for BMWs and didn't want to go out of my way to purchase one either. When I asked what type of battery he would use, he said "Original BMW battery" and he gave me a fair price for the battery and labor. I was skeptical at first, because the pricing was same as non-OEM batteries and BMW always charges a premium to have their sticker on anything. When I opened up the battery compartment to double check the work, it was a brand new BMW Mini Original AGM battery. Car works well again and no hesitation on start up. I've been here twice now. I drive a 2004 BMW e46 330Ci 6 speed. I took my car there once during fall 2021 to get a new water pump, brake pads, thermostat, and front control arm bushings installed. I dropped the car off on a Friday morning and it was ready by 4pm the same day. I was very surprised to get it back the same day, so I checked to make sure the new parts were indeed installed and they were. I often DIY service on my car and, if I'm stuck, I sometimes call and Mel always has useful advice. I had an incident replacing my oil filter housing gasket and received some good advice. I just took my car there again to get a new clutch installed. I went with an ACT street clutch and, due to shop policy, I needed to bring the parts in with me since ACT kits are not OEM. There was a blocker on this project because it turned out that ACT had shipped me the incorrect release bearing for the clutch. Mel worked with me to get it sorted out and was willing to wait while I called the manufacturer to find out if I could use a OEM release bearing without voiding the warranty. He also helped advise on what parts to replace. I ended up also replacing the rear main seal, fork, fork release spring, and fork pivot pin in addition to the new clutch kit. I also had new exhaust mounting hardware installed. The clutch works beautifully with no issues. During the clutch job, Mel found the mounting hardware to my exhaust was damaged. He also found that section 1 of my exhaust system was bent. Other reinforcement bars and heat shield under the gas tank were bent. He took pictures and shared them all with me. Very useful since now I know exactly what's damaged. Every time I'm there, I see some collector-type BMW. It's really fun to walk in an see an E30 M3 on the lift or, last time, I saw a phoenix yellow e46 M3 convertible with matching hard top. Clearly the right guy for any BMW enthusiast. He is willing to explain and offer advice if you ask. The work always seems fairly priced and well done. I would recommend anyone with a BMW to come here. read more

Sometimes, you realize how great a business is without you even having to pay for their services. I was looking to have a Pre-Purchase Inspection done @ the shop so I called and made an appointment with Mel. The seller then needed the time to be changed so I had to call Mel back a second time to make the change. A Pre-Purchase Inspection generally takes 2-3 hours so a shop needs to allocate its time to it. 30-Minutes before the appointment, the seller contacted me (as well as the shop) and had to cancel the appointment. Mel from Autohaus contacted me to notify me that the appointment had been cancelled. He could have been angry and upset but instead was very calm and respectful. He could have also charged my credit card for the last second cancellation but he did not. He was very understanding of the seller situation and handled the situation with such care and respect! The two most important things that most of us look for in a mechanic are expertise and honesty. It can be hard to find a mechanic who's both an expert and honest. When it comes to BMWs, Mel at AMH is both. Ever since my old mechanic, Wes, at International Auto Clinic in Cupertino, retired and closed his shop, it's been a struggle to find someone who can match the level of service that he provided. I had been to Palo Alto Bimmer a few times, but after a few rather negative experiences with them, I figured I'd be better off not taking my BMW back there anymore. Based on his Yelp reviews, I decided to give Mel's shop a shot. I initially came in to get a second opinion on Palo Alto Bimmer's diagnoses. He did his own evaluation and confirmed their diagnoses while offering cheaper estimates than PAB's. After the aforementioned negative experiences with PAB, I brought my car back to Mel to take care of a few issues it had. He did a great and timely job at replacing the water pump and checking my car over for any other problems. Since then, my car's been running well and I have no complaints. Pros: + Competent: Mel is BMW-factory trained and worked for a number of years as a technician for Peter Pan BMW, so he told me. You always want to make sure that whoever works on your car knows it well, and Mel definitely knows BMWs. + Honest: One of the best ways to tell whether or not a mechanic is honest is if they try to save you money and whether or not they're pushy when it comes to your car needing work. On several occasions, Mel told me that I need not worry about certain repairs that I thought were necessary and he confirmed that my tires and suspension are in great shape (with the exception of some slightly cracked bushings, which I already knew about). + Fairly-priced: BMW prices are never cheap. Yet, Mel's prices, so far, have been cheaper than Palo Alto Bimmer and way cheaper than the dealer. + Uses OEM parts: Definitely important as it can be risky to use cheaper, aftermarket parts. Mel uses authentic, OEM BMW parts and when I was at the dealer earlier and brought AMH up, they told me they knew him and that he buys from their parts department. + Good location: His shop is located on Old Middlefield Way, right after you exit 101 north. It's also right down the street from multiple eateries as well as walking distance from Rengstorff Center where there's a Costco, In-N-Out, McDonald's, and Krispy Kreme, among others. + Personalized service: It's a one-man shop. Mel does everything -- He answers the phone, does the repairs, and writes you up. I like that because it's great to have a direct rapport with the person working on your car, unlike other shops and the dealer where you only really get to speak with a service advisor who doesn't actually do any work on your car. His shop is relatively small. The parking lot he shares with several other businesses can get crowded, he doesn't have much of a waiting room, and, AFAIK, doesn't offer any loaner cars. He also has to leave very briefly in the afternoon to pick his kids up. But if you drive a BMW and are in need of an independent shop that you can rely on to get the job done, pay Mel at AMH a visit. First of all, I like to thank the people who left reviews on Yelp. Because of the detailed reviews people left here, I was able to find Mel and his shop. Mel impressed me with his honest inspections and the high quality of the services. The very first time, I took my car (BMW X3) in for an oil leaking issue that a BMW dealer quoted me for a couple of thousand. Mel inspected and told me the leaking wasn't from what I told him (what the dealer told me), but from the front crankshaft seal, which was a small job. He took care of it right away, and saved me a lot of money (headache as well). He immediately earned my respect. I took my car in a few more times to replace brake pads, fuel tank breather valve, turbocharger boost solenoid. He also helped me debug the BMW's notorious "drivetrain malfunction warning". Now I go to him whenever I have an issue, a question about my BMW, or even just a blessing for a long driving trip. we have a bmw x5 that required service: change oil, air and cabin filters; replace brake fluid. i went to autobahn based on the yelp reviews and the references to Mel's (owner) experience. i called to make an appointment at 9am next day. when i show up, there's no place to park and no one around. the 1 parking spot is taken by a new bmw. i park in the 1 garage space and walk into an office with 2 young guys, maybe late teens/early 20's. 1 is heads down in an iphone video game and the other eventually acknowledges me from behind a counter. i'm the only person there and they're reluctant to even talk. i ask for mel and the 1 young guy tells me mel is on vacation and he's a son and the iphone guy is his brother. i almost walk out but am pressed for time so leave the car. the guy behind the desk acknowledges i'm the 9am appointment and they'll have it done with a "few hours". i ask about the limited the parking which they acknowledge and who owns the bmw in the 1 spot. the iphone guy says it's his and he's a brother. i remind him i'm a customer and suggest he not park his car in the 1 slot. he says nothing. they call about 2pm that the car is ready. i tell them i'm in a meeting and can be there at 3pm. they ask if i could come earlier. i explain it's not possible. when i get there at 3pm there's still no customers and i gather the 2 lads planned to close early for other more important stuff. i ask if they take visa or apple pay (there's an apple pay terminal on the counter). they ask me to pay with venmo. i've never heard of a retailer asking for venmo especially when there's an apple pay terminal in front of me. i point this out and they reluctantly agree to apple pay. we were selling the car and i just wanted the service notification eliminated. otherwise i would have walked out. read more

So nothing too extensive, but still appreciated that he was able to let me bring the car in on fairly short notice, and I appreciated his straightforward assessment of whether the work would need to be done on my 8 year old M car. Mel is a fantastic guy and a wonderful mechanic. Needed and oil change and brake job front and rear on my dad's E66 7 series. Most shops that I called had a wait time of 2-3 weeks for their earliest appointment. Not only did Mel give me an appointment for the next day, his shop also accepts outside parts (trying to buy all my parts from fcpeuro to save some money). Mel was a cool dude to talk to and began work on my car immediately and finished at the time promised. The cost for the work was lower than most other BMW/German specialists. However the thing that really stood was that I had mentioned an issue with the rear left axle and he fixed that for free! The last shop I was going to would have easily charged an extra half hour labor ($65). The other HUGE thing was that the dash had been lit up with some warning lights for the past 7 YEARS and our old shop told us we needed to spend $200-500 in parts and then was going to charge us another $250 to click a button on their scan tool to clear the light. Mel somehow cleared the lights for FREE without me even mentioning it. Mel clearly knows what he is doing and is a wonderful guy. This is little bit dated review but thought I should rate this business. My BMW 325i stopped on the freeway and I had it towed here. Original estimate was around $2000 and it ended up being $3500 at the end. Supposedly replaced the engine with a used one but when I took it to my regular mechanic (50 miles away) was told it wasnt the case. Also the oil was leaking and I was told that was not covered. I see a lot of good ratings so I am hoping just an exception. Anyways I spend $3500 on a call that wast worth that much. read more

Mel did a great job diagnosing my problem with my BMW. It had an engine code showing something about an ignition problem. He found the bad coil and replaced it and he suggested to replace all of them since he is already working on it, to save on labor. I checked first at one of those BMW forums and they also suggest to replace all of them since they might go bad later and my car has high mileage. My car is running great again! What's good about this shop is that the owner is also the mechanic, not some young kid that he hired. read more

After I got some quotes from the stealership, I called Mel twice today on a Saturday after his store already closed. I was very impressed that he actually answered the phone and was very patient while he was already on his way to enjoy his weekend. Super responsive and trustworthy. Here is what I need according to the dealership (08 BMW 335i coupe): (1) Front Control Arm Bushing (2) Brake Fluid Flush/Bleeding (3) Oil Change (4) In cabin microfilter (5) Water Pump/Thermostat (still under warranty repair) (6) Oil Gasket Kit (still under warranty repair) Now I would say that Mel is not the cheapest in terms of items (2) to (4) but that's ok because quality matters. Also, the only reason the dealership price (after discount) is comparable to Mel is that (a) these are pretty standard items around the same price wherever you go unless you DIY and (b) I found some online coupons to get a dealership discount (would have paid 50% to 100% more if I didn't do the research) I would have done items (2) to (4) at Mel but I already committed to the dealership for those items so next time ... As for (1), I am definitely going to Mel. Will leave another update after that is done but I am pretty confident that it will be fine. I saw a negative review complaining about oil change costing $150 for a 6 series ... actually that sounds about right considering the number of quarts your car need and the oil filter is more expensive than a 3 series ... so if you drive a 6 series and can't afford this price for oil change, then maybe you should sell your car. My M3 broke down and left me stranded on the side of the freeway. I browsed through yelp looking for a BMW mechanic and I came across Mel! Although it was early in the morning and before AMH hours Mel still answered! I described to him the symptoms my car gave me before dying and he already had an idea of what it could possibly be and told me to tow it over and that he will diagnose it.
