The security guard there also is also a mechanic and was able to help me find what I needed and even helped come out of the store and help guide me with installation of the bulbs for the car. Autozone is a blight in our neighborhood. Trash and auto fluids flood the street and they are in gross violation of CA State Streets and Highway 5610 and Oakland Municipal Codes 13.16.100 (litter), and 13.16.70 (pollutants) which require business to clean the perimeter of the building - including curbs - and prohibit business from sweeping trash into the street. These Bad Actors must be held accountable. When I asked them to clean up the mess (I live across the street) the manager refused to share her name and told me to leave. City of Oakland should fine them until they are compliant. I urge you to tell the manager to clean the street around their store. read more

I am generously using a one star. If I could pick a negative star, I would have done it. Except for the epic guard who was very helpful. AutoZone should hire him as the manager for the location. I called in to find out if they would sell and replace a battery in my old #2 car, which I have not sold. Don't ask... The guy who answered put me on hold because he was "attending" to a customer in line... physically. I understand that. I could have composed a whole violin concerto in the time I waited, put on my headset and headed out to the store - 28 minutes!!! Come on now! The young punk... can I call him that?, who looked resentful that I had disturbed him doing "something" asked me brusquely what I want. I gave him a Post-it with the battery name, and AutoZone SKU. He was seriously upset I had upstaged him, he might have said they did not have it... He asked me to go pop the hood, he would be "right out". His "right out" was he went to the toilet and locked himself in. Ten minutes later, the other two disinterested employees behind the counter said to wait. Another 15 minutes later the armed guard asked me politely what I was waiting for, I gave him the crumpled post-it. He went and attached it to the display battery and called the kid locked in the bathroom. About five minutes later, he said he had no idea when this "great" sales guy and 2 minute installer would show up. This was one of my most surreal experiences in a store geared to consumers, where the folks selling were so uninterested in customers. What has gone wrong in our country? People are looking for jobs, and I am sure AutoZone pays whatever the local market requires, and yet... I rarely complain about businesses on Yelp. If I remember right, this is the second one, after a terrible experience of discrimination in a Grand Ave coffee place several years ago. OTH, the AutoZone employees on San Pablo Ave, in Berkeley, (which did not have the battery I wanted) and the one on MacArthur Blvd, which did have it and said they would install it, and much closer to my home - go figure, were courteous. The people who work here are great and pretty funny too. Always have a decent time getting parts here and joking around with the staff. They've also been super great about loaning out specialty tools that have seriously saved my butt when I was in a bind. I felt compelled to drop some love hear as I just called to ask for pricing for some parts and had a perfect experience as a customer. Jackie picked up the phone within a few seconds, looked up a full set of brake parts, gave all the rangers of prices super concisely, I never had to ask for her to elaborate, she was just on it and had a really nice eager to help and pleasant tone. Cheaper than most auto part stores. They didn't have what I needed but the woman helping me was nice and friendly. Also if you're an Auto Zone member you'll get emails with coupons and what not. So make sure you sign up and get a keychain card to scan every time you visit. I always come to Auto Zone for all my car parts. I called by phone a request for a Battery for 2001 Volvo V40. I came to the location and purchased the Battery & 2 year Warranty. That was over a month ago. Since then I have had two stallouts and one Tow to my mechanic. He says Your AutoZone Battery is "No Good and Won't hold the power long"??? Yesterday I went back to that autoZone store and Requested another Battery 850amp...they disconnected the original battery Before checking to see if they Had another appropriate battery...??? They Didnt' ??!! So he had to reinstall their bad battery so I could get Home!!!! Needless to say...I want a Full Refund when I Return Your Battery. I have my Receipt. I like this Autozone because they usually have what I need and are the only one around. Pros: convenient location, generally helpful staff. Cons: Never enough people working registers, line is always long and patrons have shitty attitudes because they're waiting. Right now (10/2019) they are out of almost everything. So she can help me identifying the right battery for my motorcycle. And immediately she told I don't want to do it because it's going to take time. I have never seen someone complaining about doing a simple task that is part of his job. Than she started giving attitude saying that she has to do other things before she gets ready to close. My car is about 5 years old so it definitely needed a battery change. I called ahead of time if anyone would be able to help me install the battery and Jose made sure that someone who knows how to install would be present when I drop in. I bought a new battery today from the 27th street location and the staff members all were very polite and helpful. The store had the battery I wanted. I thought I didn't bring the right tool to take off one nut from the battery housing and, although they've stopped lending out tools because of the pandemic, one employee lent me hers from her car (I sanitized my hands carefully before using so I wouldn't contaminate her wrench) and kindly pointed out that I was loosening the wrong nut. When I then lost a part of what held the battery in place, they had a replacement part for it in stock for about $3. So the experience was great. There is yellow caution tape up to prevent customers from getting within 6 feet of the counter and all staff members wear masks. The only problem with the setup that I see is that there's not much room for customers to walk around the line that forms parallel to the checkout counters. It would be ideal to have a line marked off back through the first aisle with a big gap near the front so people could walk in the store. (They'd have to move the items in the first aisle somewhere which might be challenging.) read more

Hector was awesome, but otherwise this is a terrible place... STAY AWAY. Even though Hector was great, he unfortunately went on a lunch break, so the person who ended up "helping me" was a guy named Chong (?). He was pretentious, tried to add items to my purchase without explaining what they were for, and then didn't even give me my receipt for a $188 battery purchase. He threw it away. Autozone advertises free battery, alternator, and starter tests, but 2 out of the 3 devices they use to run these tests were broken. I ended up replacing my battery anyway. After Chong installed it and I tried to start my car, it still stalled for a couple of seconds. He gave up diagnosing the issue and walked away brusquely saying that I should try a mechanic. $188 and 1 hour terribly spent. + there was broken glass everywhere and both the customers and the cashiers did not seem to understand the concept of lines. read more

I've been dealing with some (non-contagious) health issues, so I wasn't able to take care of making sure my car is safe to drive for my long road trip back home for Thanksgiving until the very last minute. Everytime I have been here the security guard has been rude or last time hit on my fiancee...which she didn't tell me about until after we had almost gotten home. This rating is only for the security guards as they are still a representative for the store and literally the first person you see when you come in. I will give a more updated review of the store when the management speaks with their security guards and hopefully the next time I am here the security guards don't have smart ass comments when you ask if there is a trash can. Or when they jump into conversations they are not involved in...customer (me) + employee does not = security guard saying what he thinks should be done or what I should buy. Sam at the #4151 store in West Oakland was ON HIS LUNCH BREAK and he still dropped everything he was doing and helped install my new battery (which would have been funky to do alone given the corrosion present on the old battery).
