This is worst parts store I've experienced in the Bay Area and I've been to several over the years. The products being faulty is the smaller part of my issue. The customer service and their attention to details is the bigger problem. There is no one with remotely any manners or common sense. If a product is faulty and a receipt presented within the time frame, there should never be a need to inconvenience not one but 3 different customers. The store is filthy, even for a auto parts store. Parking lot looks like a prison. I opted to leave the manager the item I was returning along with the receipt and spend the money to buy a new battery at a more reliable service center. read more

When to order chains to drive up to the Sierra Nevada's, and they didn't have them in, so they ordered them for me and told me they would call me when they arrived, but promised they would get there before I left in three days. They never called me, I had to make arrangements to drive with a friend. I came in when I returned to get a refund, and they told me that it wasn't possible, and that there were no refunds. I told them that I never received the product so how could they charge me?? The guy told me that was the policy, so I asked for the manager and explain the whole process, and he said he would do it for me "this one time." Bought a battery September of 2022 and was told by the lady that helped me "bring it back before a year and we'll replace it no matter what!" I held onto the receipt, set a reminder on my phone, and took the battery back just before the year mark. The guy working told me that it's only for defective batteries, which was never mentioned by the original worker. She was adamant that it was free replacement, no questions asked. DO NOT order online from Napa and expect to only be billed for the amount on their email confirmation or their delivery receipt. Yep. I was billed (my credit card was charged) for the CORRECT amount but a couple of days later another charge was put through for the same order. This is obviously illegal and also insulting. They told me if I did not have a certified shop put the part in then they will not ok for a return. Mind you I had to order a second one and nothing said they would not return it. I haven't "yelped " much before but I felt as if I had to after visiting General Auto Parts. It's not in the best part of Oakland but it's close to the freeway and once your inside the parking lot and then the store it is a safe and friendly place. I was amazed at the depth of parts they carry on hand and the prices are better than I have seen in the Bay Area. The guys that I have dealt with on the counter are efficient and knowledgable. I met the owner Tim on one trip to the store. Great guy, very helpful and knows the car parts business inside and out. He seems to have created an environment that makes a good place to work. I have bought everything from wiper blades to major car parts there and have been very satisfied with the quality and great prices! read more

This place is an absolute joke! Needed a CV axle for a 2006 Prius. Right when I picked it up I said it look too big and they confirmed and triple checked it was the right part. I paid a mechanic to install it. Nope! Wrong part! Returned the following Tuesday to return it. Had misplaced the receipt but the part was still new in the box. Nope! They needed the receipt. I told them I bought it last Friday and here's my credit card so they can check it. Nope! They needed the receipt. Drove an hour round trip back home and got them the receipt. Spent a total of five extra hours driving in addition to a complete runaround from a bunch of idiots on Ritalin! It turns out the parts puller is dyslexic! Really? I asked if they could give me anything for all the time and extra $100 I had to pay to install it and they offered me a bag! Yes, a bag for free! I was a long time, faithful, General Auto Parts Fan! I work for the City of Oakland, and for years used Napa/General because City Employees receive a discount. "And they had Great Service, and expertise". After the old Center Auto, in West Oakland closed, Napa/General became the defect o "number one auto parts store in Oakland. And I dare say possible the best in The Bay! Tall statement I know. I've had plenty of Great Experiences with Napa/General, until Saturday 9/8/18, it all changed. I traveled from my home in San Mateo County to Oakland, just to get the parts I needed. General consistently has knowledgeable, attentive staff, that can easily track down needed parts. And my visit Saturday, started out the same. I got their before they opened (8am),got one part at 8:02 am, the second was ordered at 8:03 am. I paid at 8:24 am (per receipt). And was told the part would be their within three hours, and the counter employee would call when the part arrived. I got the call around 11:20 am. I hung around Oakland for three hours. Then I returned to the Napa/General Parking Lot at 11am (3 hour window). When I got the call I went in and collected my part. Luckily I had the old parts to compare with the new parts. I found a discrepancy in the electrical connection. The clerk was very helpful in finding me the electrical adapter needed to install the new unit. He placed the order at 11:48 am, I paid at 12:01 pm (per receipt). I decided to wait, in the parking lot till the part arrived. It was just suppose to take three hours, maybe four. I waited, and waited. At 3 pm,I called to check. I was told (truck hadn't arrived yet). At 4 pm, I called again. Still no deliveries. So I waited till five minutes till close (6 pm). The clerk that tried to "help me" said: the order wasn't placed till after 3 pm. A overuse lie, got the paper work that clearly states 11:48 am, plus, he did not even look at the paper work before making his fact less statement. As of Monday 9/10/18, 7:27 pm, I have still not received the part I paid for, or a call from Napa/General with any follow up on a part that should have arrived Saturday, around 3 pm. Although the first clerk was very helpful and knowledgeable, the extra necessary adapter, should have been pointed out and ordered at 8:03 am, along with the second part. Then I should have been called and updated on the ETA at 3pm. By Monday Morning, I should have received a full update on status. I have since retrieved the necessary part (adapter), the same day, from a competitor. "It was a breeze" and much closer! I am not sure if I will ever due business with that Napa ever again! This could have been a one off (they happen), but still updates should have been made. read more

Ever find yourself in need of a rather obscure part for a 40 year old car? Until recently, neither had I. Special shout out to the boys at Kraegan who went out of their way to help find the needed part and Direct me to General. General Auto Parts is indeed a superstore! I couldn't believe the size of this place and the inventory seems unlimited! The staff were very helpful, professional and friendly. I'm pretty loyal to Napa over O'reilly and Autozone, so I want to like General Auto, and I used to like the place. But in the last year or so, every time I go or call, I end up thinking,"Are they TRYING to go out of business?" The store has a much smaller selection than it used to, now it sort of looks like they are closing out their inventory. The staff seems pretty uninterested in helping you obtain a part. They are slow AF, and if they don't have it in stock, instead of asking if I want them to order it, you just get a "Nope, no good." They also won't order a part for you unless you physically come in to pay for it first, and they act like they don;t want you to do that. WTF is that all about? That's not even old school, because old-school would order it for you and tell you when you can pick it up and thank you for your business. So instead of driving there twice, once to pay, and once to pick it up... well, it's on Amazon for cheaper, and they will bring it to me. I'm all for supporting local brick and mortar, but this place seems like they don't want the support. It's a bummer. read more

This is the only place you'll catch me going to get parts for my ride. I usually would go to the local Auto Zone for simple parts. However they seem to never have anything other than your typical America and dime a dozen cars. When it comes to engine components, this place is golden. Not only do they have a super clean shop but its very organized and a lot of local car dealerships and mechanics use them. And they carry waaaaaaaay more parts than most of the local stores. The people at the this place are awesome! My mom bought a starter for my car back in Dec. with a lifetime warranty. Unfortunately, the thing just went out on me and my mom couldn't find the receipt. But it was no problem! I took the old starter in and was outta there within 5 minutes with a brand new one. No hassle about not having the receipt or any proof of purchase. Many years ago GAP was a NAPA store. Then it was an independent store catering to repair shops. As of 6/23/16 it is in the process of becoming a NAPA corporate operated store. They do not yet have any NAPA parts, and they still have the preposterous GAP wholesale type layout (think Grainger) as always. Fingers crossed they will figure out how to make this transition work. For now, just go to the NAPA store in Hayward or Alameda unless you are looking for the product lines that GAP carried. The phone number for the old location on 66th St (by the Coliseum) forwards to this new address; but they aren't going to throw you any bones to clue you in to that fact on the phone... GAP never was customer service oriented. The NAPA store on 66th was freakin awesome, which is why I tried to patronize them today. The logistics are fubar at the moment. I look forward to trying them again AFTER the transition is complete. The location is very convenient. The parking lot is ample. They are close to Coyote Santo for some authentic Mexican food; but the area is ghetto so you gotta keep your wits about you. read more

The worst auto parts store. Don't bother going here unless u want to get hassled by the workers, recd the wrong parts, like making returns and delaying ur project. I went there Friday am to order belts. They did not have them all in stock. It needed to be special ordered. Idiot said one would be in at 3pm that day and the others would be in the next day same time. I went back two days later and go to the cashier. She looks on the counter and doesn't see my order. I told her it was placed 2 days ago. She replied if u don't pick up n 24 hrs it will be put back. What! the other cashier said I would receive a call when they come in but never got one! Finally she gets off her lazy $&@ and cks in the back. Nope not there. "Go to back and ask the other people". The idiot who helped(?) me was busy so a nice lady tried to help find my order since I did bring my rec. the idiot comes over and said I needed the receipt. He wasn't helpful and hassled me cuz I didn't have my rec even though he remembers me and the transaction. After 3 attempts to locate my order, idiot finally finds it. I asked, if it's wrong can I return it? Idiot says he ordered the number on the old belt and it's the right one. Well I get home and of course he screws it up. My belt was A40. He ordered B40. Made a third trip back to the store. And he barely acknowledges he made a mistake. Took a long while to even say sorry. Not going back there again read more

I went thinking it was still Napa Auto parts, I was very disappointed with the customer service, I walked in and took a number, it said they where serving #31, I was #35, but ummm no one else was in the store, I was walking around browsing for about 10 mins waiting... i walked to the back and everyone (about 6 people) just keep looking down at their computers... I went to to the front and asked the cashier how do I get a part, she oh those guys in the back can help you, so I asked the 1st guy I saw, is this where I inquire about parts? He said "yea we see you, we'll get to you" I was thinking damn dude you could have at least acknowledged you knew I wanted a part... after about 10 more mins. I quietly just walked out. Thank God for these people! I love this store! They offer hands down the best customer service I've experienced in an auto parts. Women, you know how you usually get treated when you're doing your best to handle your car business -- like you're a turkey ready for slaughter. I've dealt with General Auto Parts three times this past year. I did not know what I was doing, but thank God for the internet. I found General Auto Parts, and was able to look up the right parts for my car, and how much they cost. 'Cause many of these heathen mechanics will take you for a big ride if you let 'em. But these folks have reasonable to cheap prices. They just ask you the specs for your vehicle, and if you decide you want it, and they don't have it there, they order the parts, and you pre-pay, and you can bring 'em back if they're the wrong ones. They are organized, smart, patient -- they explain things to you, and are just plain nice. For Aunt Esther, and all you women out there THIS IS HUGE! I will be back! read more
