When I was in college and would come home to visit dad in Berwyn, I would sometimes need to change…read moremy oil. I've been shopping at Murray's for years to buy oil, filters, pretty much anything I need to keep my car's engine happy. I've always received good service from the staff (and I might add that they were always well staffed) there and the check out girls have always been friendly. In fact, I bought all my auto supplies in Spring 2008 for last summer at this Murray's. Flash forward to June 2009: It's oil-changing time! Time to go to Murray's! I enter anticipating the check-out girls and service desk dude. I freeze in my tracks. Where are the check-out registers? Where's the service desk? The counter in the back has been shifted to the side of the store where the entrance is, and there are just 2 guys working the whole store. They get parts from the back for people who need help and explanations how to fix their own cars, answer the phones, AND they and they have to ring up all the customers! At 2pm on a Saturday afternoon, you'd think they'd be better staffed than that. Where were the check-out registers? Where were the check-out girls? There were not even any girls to check out! (Yeah, I go to the auto store on Saturday afternoon to meet chicks...heh). I waited in line all too long to buy 5 quarts of Penzoil and a FRAM filter. Also, I noticed the store was not nearly as clean it used to be. What happened? Turns out O'Reilly Auto bought Murray's parent company, CSK. I get it. LET'S CUT COSTS. Well, Mr. O'Reilly, I will take my business elsewhere from now on.

This is your warning to avoid this shop at all costs! Below is a detailed account of my experience:…read more Initial Issue: I noticed an oil leak from the front end of my car and scheduled a fluid leak evaluation which cost $29. Evaluation and Quote: During the evaluation they claimed that the valve cover gasket was the source of the leak. I was quoted $426.79 over the phone for the replacement (which I later found out included an undisclosed extended warranty fee) Repair and Continued Issue: I agreed to proceed with the repair. Alex, the manager, confirmed that the repair was complete and that the car was no longer leaking. However, within 2 hours of driving home, I noticed that the car was still leaking from the exact same spot. Second Visit: I returned to the store and spoke with Alex again. He looked under the car and said he didn't see any leak and suggested that the leak might not be oil but another fluid (it was absolutely oil). Alex asked me to place paper under the car and return with it the following morning. Follow-Up Inspection: I returned with the oil-stained paper, which I showed to Ralph, an associate at the counter. Ralph looked under the car and (confirmed) that there was indeed an oil leak on the bottom of the engine. He stated that the Forest Park location is not equipped to handle this type of leak, as it requires removing the transmission. Ralph had no explanation for why the leak was missed during the initial evaluation. Concerns: The fluid leak inspection was inaccurate. I proceeded with the repair based on incorrect information provided by Alex. Additionally, there was no indication that dye was used to assist in the inspection, yet I was charged $5.99 for oil dye (isn't this fraud?) I went to another repair shop and they performed a "real" leak inspection which confirmed the true source of the leak. I am dissatisfied with the service provided by Pep Boys and they've yet to respond to my request for them to honor their 100% satisfaction guarantee. Go somewhere else!

Also I know this person only gives referrals, when we'll deserved. Prior to going to Pete's, I had a bad experience with a local business, mechanic and tire shop in the area (North Ave & Harlem). Went for an oil change, tire rotation and once over before putting my vehicle on the road in late June. Was told my radiator had a leak and it would be expensive to repair. Weeks prior, my husband vehicle had been leaking fluids on the garage floor, so i purchased two silver large cookie sheets from a auto mechanic store, to catch liquid and keep from staining the floor, put one under each vehicle. His vehicle did continue to leak and stain the pan, but my mine was clean nothing, and still looking new after several weeks. I explained this to the very polite and professional desk personnel. He insisted there was a leak. I'm panicking because I was unsure if we should put the vehicle on the road. But we did, stopping along the way to check the radiator fluids several times, never did the fluids go low even to today, That was in late June and here we are in mid October. When I took the vehicle to Pete's for brakes had him check the radiator for any leaks or abnormalities. Me Pete stated, there was no leaks and he looked fine, which saved me around 1700.00. Thank you Pete's!!!!!
