My husband and I went here one night for a light dinner. The atmosphere was not very inviting. The staff members were okay but not great. The food was way overpriced for what you get. My husband ordered a salad and added chicken which made it around $10, and it was the size of a side salad with no flavor. I had a sandwich that was also pretty small for the cost and not very good. It reminded me of a place I would stop at in an airport out of necessity and be forced to pay double what it's worth. It's hit or miss, is the short version. The employees aren't paid enough, you can tell because its 1) in Orenco, and 2) their enthusiasm is forced. I appreciate their efforts to try and keep things running smoothly, but it's a loose facade. I think their manager either doesn't have experience running a cafe, or does and shouldn't, if I had to guess. Though their rent is probably stupid high for no good reason because of the property owners. Again, Orenco. Their croissants are in a plastic tub, meaning they're soggy. I'm admittedly a but of a snob wrt croissants, so your mileage may very, but 3$ is about twice as mu h as they're actually worth. Their breakfast sandwich made with a croissant, on the other hand, is toasted and actually pretty decent. I'm not a connessiuer of coffee, so I can't speak much to it. When business isn't too heavy they make it as fast as anyone else, and they taste fine. Everything is about 1-2 dollars more expensive as it needs to be, but it is still Orenco. Mostly I dislike that the owners obviously spent lots of money making the place look fancy, and not enough on what's left. This place was obviously built for the purpose of extracting money first and foremost, and not as a place people will work and live in. The latter is still possible of course, but it's all coated in a malaise of cynicism due to the former. read more

Very friendly staff, great pastries and cakes. Really like the mochas made with real chocolate chips. The 24/7 hours are great! Internet can be spotty at times. And the music can sometimes be a little loud but not too terrible. read more

The customer service at this place is appalling, for being in a nicer area of town I would expect better. The baristas are consistently on their phones every time I walk in and treat customers as a second priority and almost act annoyed when you order. More consistent recently they have been out of what is needed to make my drinks, although I'm not a business owner you'd think a little more planning would go into ordering products as to not continually having these issues. Not impressed. And if you like cold brew, don't go here. read more

I love Starbucks but decided to try this place. I loved it. I still go to Starbucks on the regular but whenever I want a really strong coffee I go to this place. They also have amazing pastries. The workers are also extremely friendly. read more

I wrote a review (still posted) about 3 years ago that wasn't too favorable, mainly because I felt the portions (sandwiches and salad) were on the skimpy side. My wife and I returned last week and the portions are much larger now and very good. Staff still friendly and the coffee still hot! Keep up the improvements. read more

Great location spot, but not so good service for late night early morning shifts. I literally stood at the small selection of available pastries for a good 7 minutes while the barista was talking. Coffee isn't too bad, could have been worse could have been better. Music was calming and it seemed like a pretty good spot to hook up your wifi and do a little work. Not impressed with the sweets that were sold. I had a pastry that was seemingly stale, it must have been there since earlier in the day time. Pretty good coffee shop. It's quieter and bigger than the other Ava's around. A good place to hangout with friends with a cup of coffee or a quite secluded coffee shop for reading book. read more

Went here with my friends. The girl working up front was really nice. Ordered a drink and didn't know you can add ice cream in there. She asked if I wanted ice cream and I don't think it even changed the price. Anyways the drink was very good and not only that but they had a live performance in there and an ice rink outside. Really nice location and drink that I got plus service was good. This place gets packed though so might have to look for a table but that's not a problem. We wanted to sit outside as a family (4 of us) but the chairs are chained to the tables in sets of three?? So....that was disappointing! But all in all, not bad. read more

Their coffee is really good, and they have really BIG house cups. The staff is always friendly. The fresh bread for their sandwiches is awesomely good, and the ingredients are all fresh and tasty, but portions are pretty skimpy. I have had the breakfast sandwich with turkey, and while the scrambled egg portion was fluffy and nice, the single thin slice of turkey was transparently thin leaving barely a hint of turkey taste and/or feel in the mouth, probably less than paper thin, could probably breath through it. I felt unsatisfied, even though the sandwich itself was otherwise really good. The Hillsboro Orenco MAX TriMet location is really convenient for me on my way to work so I will assuredly stop there again. Maybe they will read this and improve, or I will find something on the menu that is more satisfying. A worthwhile convenient stop, but would not go out of my way for it. read more

Every time I come here there's something not right. Today was the most frustrating- on a busy Friday night they have one guy working so they can't take food orders unless you're okay waiting an extended period of time (totally get where the worker is coming from!) I feel bad for him, not his fault at all but 100% a management issue! I always waiver about coming here because it close to my apartment but definitely won't be back. Service is very slow. Several of the employees are not very friendly. Was down here often for skating this Christmas and visited their location several times. Hopefully they can improve on this because they're in a great location. read more

I don't know what was worse the extremely slow service or my gross macchiato made with day old coffee. It took 15 minutes to get my drink and a bagel. 15 minutes!! Okay let's talk about this amazing and wonderful establishment for a hot minute!! The staff is clearly exceptional. The baristas are incredibly friendly and can hold a strong conversation with everyone while still working with a sense of urgency. The baristas at Ava's have found a great balance of conversing with each customer and still managing to assist everyone in line in a timely manner. This is a big plus for me because I love walking downstairs from my studio apartment located above the roasteria to grab an iced americano and socialize with the baristas. It's a good feeling to be able to socialize with the staff and not have to see their business suffer. All that set aside, this staff has aced the basics of what it takes to be considered an exceptional coffee roasteria! Quality coffee, Strong espresso shots, speed, efficiency, and most importantly customer service. I applaud you Orenco Station location. read more

There are 2 things about Ava that are good: the location and staff. It's apparent the ownership is skimping due to their probably steep lease. A large espresso drink contains only 2 shots-anything more is an additional charge. The wife & I ordered 2 sandwiches; each one had a single slice of deli meat in it. 2 drinks and 2 breakfast sandwiches for almost $30; my money is better spent going to Starbucks. Don't waste your time unless you're a student and need the late hours for studying. read more

So I've been here twice now. The first time was better than the second, but only by the margin. I only went back the second time out of necessity (6:00 AM business meeting, must have caffeine!) The first time I went (8 days ago, so well after their opening and theoretically enough time to get over the kinks), I was ignored. Altogether. Two employees were chatting while I stood in a line of 1 (as in, just myself was in line). There were two tables full in the cafe. After about 5 minutes (I was watching the clock above the bar), I gave up and left empty handed. No one ever said a word to me. Today, I was acknowledged once I was in line, but not when I walked in, and again, I was the only one waiting for help. L...o...n...g... wait util she finally asked me what I wanted. I ordered a latte (truly delicious and well done, so bonus points for that) and a bagel with cream cheese, toasted. All to go. Then I left, and the barista was surly and silent most of the time. My disappointment only got worse when I got to my meeting and opened up my bagel. Not toasted. Maybe two teaspoons of cream cheese? Maybe? Covering one half of one half of the bagel. To summarize: terrible service. Outrageous prices. Marginal (and poorly prepared) food quality. But a gorgeous space- truly gorgeous. Doesn't quite equal out for me though. read more
