Ava's was okay (as long as you don't mind having to shout to be heard across the table), but the #1 restaurant in Tampa, it is not. I had been waiting to try Ava. Seeing the mixed reviews, I wanted to give them a time to work out the kinks. Maybe I should have waited longer. I knew I was in trouble when I saw that they had a bunch of tables for 2 in their foyer. I saw those tables and thought "those poor suckers who have to sit right by the door in a major thoroughfare." Guess who one of those suckers was? I cannot tell you how many times my husband and I were bumped over the course of the evening. My next tip off was that the restaurant was so loud that my husband and I couldn't hear each other unless we shouted. And it was so dark that my husband had to use his cell phone to be able to read the menu. Our waitress was very nice and enthusiastic, if not the most professional. She had a lot of recommendations for us regarding the menu. She was less well-versed with the wine list, but that was okay. She was willing to run to the cellar to check on years (I have no idea why the wine list has the years for only some of their bottles). I liked my 1919 mule (although they must have run out of copper mugs; mine was served in a short glass), but my husband did not like his drink. Our wine was much better, a 2010 Cyrus that was quite reasonably priced. I was relieved that they had some California wines instead of an all-Italian wine list. We started with the salume plate. The pancetta was excellent, and I loved the pot of duck fat and pork belly (made perfect with a little spicy mustard). The liver pate was okay but would have been better served in a ramekin rather than pre-spread on the bread because the bread became soggy and was hard to share. The picked vegetables weren't as acidic as I'd like. The prosciutto was utterly forgettable. I didn't have a chance to try the other items on the platter because an enthusiastic busboy cleared it before I tried the soft sausage and the cheese. Humph. We then had the pork belly. The egg yolk wasn't quite runny, and the pork belly wasn't crispy. I liked the flavor combinations, but the dish was more potential than actual delivery. We also had the tomato and mozzarella salad. It wasn't done Caprese style. The cheese was in large cubes, and the tomatoes were halved cherry tomatoes (my pesticide-phobia hopes they were organic). It was a good dish but not especially innovative. For my main course, I had the fish of the day, a hog snapper. It was perfect. The fish was delicate, simply seasoned with sea salt, lemon and garlic. It was served over some crispy fingerling potatoes and under a simple salad of arugula. I have no complaints about that dish at all. My husband's dish was less successful. He had the pork ribs, and they were not tender at all (he had to request a knife -- they took his away with the previous dishes). I liked the acidic apple served with the pork, but the pork itself was just blah, a little under seasoned and improperly cooked. I think the food has the potential to develop into something great, but the loud atmosphere (and my bruised shoulder from the cramped seating) makes me hesitant to return. read more

We went for brunch last weekend and really enjoyed all the food. Service was pretty quick and friendly. The pizza guy was great and gave us some tips to use at home for our own pizza. For food we had the Breakfast pizza and margarita pizza. Both delicious. I added a side house salad, simple but good. My kids had the chicken fingers and fries, and a ginormous plain pancake! I went to Ava today for lunch and knew immediately what I wanted to order due to Yelp's recommendations: mussels, salsiccia pizza, and bucatini alla vaccinara pasta (oxtail). The mussels were forgettable. It looked messy and the bread was tough. Despite the disappointment of the mussels, the pizza and the pasta were OUTSTANDING. The salsiccia was probably one of the most memorable pizzas I've ever had. The pie was soooo soft with the right amount of crunch at the crust. The toppings were delicious. I would have liked for the pizza to have more salsiccia and most importantly, MORE CHEESE. The pizza comes in two sizes, 8 inches and 11 inches. The best part of my meal was the bucatini all vaccinara pasta. I've never had bucatini pasta before. Bucatini is like a thick spaghetti. I want to cook pasta with this thick spaghetti for the rest of my life. The shredded oxtail itself was so tender and flavorful that its juices transferred to the pasta to extend its flavor. It was just so, so, soooo delicious. Again, I would have liked for there to be more of the toppings. In this case, more oxtail, but I guess it's good to not be completely satisfied so I will have to return to Ava to fill my craving. There are a ton of great restaurants in Tampa so food like this need not be tolerated. We will not be back. We really enjoyed our experience at Ava. The mussels were probably the best I have ever had. To combat the "no extra bread" I have read in many other reviews, I asked for extra bread when we ordered the mussels. It was absolutely no problem and we each got two pieces of bread to sop up the incredibly tasting broth the mussels were in. The pizza lacked flavor. It had sausage, but really only 1 piece per person. There was no seasoning in the tomato sauce. I would not recommend it if you are a pizza lover. We got there early, 6:15 reservation, and it was nice. By the time we left there was a line out the door and the place was packed. It gets extremely loud. There really is no reason for the restaurant to play music during dinner. All the guests have to combat with the noise level and it makes it hard to hear across the table. Once again, I had a delicious meal for my 3rd time however the service was sub par. My friends and I went to indulge in restaurant week. Our server took at least 5 minutes to greet us. We ordered the 3 course meals. We ordered a combination of the choices. Mussels, house salad, meatballs, sirloin steak, ragu pasta and zeppole (donut dessert) along with caramel budino dessert. Everything was delicious. I asked my friends to sample for yelp review purposes. The only thing that was ok was the caramel budino dessert. None of us particularly thought it was tasty. It was way too sweet. It took us an hour to get our meals after we were sat. We had to catch a movie so we asked to have our dessert quickly. We were able to have that. Then our server brought our checks and mine was for a $14 glass of wine which I did not have. I politely told her this was wrong. She brought me the correct one but forget to add my appetizer. I ordered the warm ricotta as well. This was delicious and the bread is grilled. I would definitely recommend. Then when she charged me she added the appetizer. Went to Ava for lunch today. As I approached I wasn't sure where I could park but as a got to the valet stand I saw a sign for self parking and there were plenty of available spots. I liked the decor but it wasn't what I was expecting. It was more rustic than sheik. On to the good stuff. I ordered the steak salad and was I very pleased. The steak prices were cooked perfectly. The capers were a welcome differentiator. And the potato "croutons" topped it off perfectly. Lunch was good and I would definitely go back. Next time I think I will go for dinner. read more

We live close by and finally walked by to see it quiet enough for us to get a table quickly and we were so happy to have made it! The wine bottle selection is pretty decent and very fairly priced. We selected their second best bottle of Malbec (only $35!) and tried a few cocktails to start, both drinks were really well made including a proper round ice cube in my boyfriends old fashioned. We started with the warm ricotta and house made bread and were so impressed we ended up ordering a basket of bread and olive oil to go with our entrees as well. I have been to Ava's stand at Armature works a million times and had the pizza (which is fabulous and a separate review on its own) and decided to branch out and try a pasta. The back of the menu lets you know that all of their pasta is made fresh in house daily and that was enough of a sell for me. My boyfriend is a traditional Italian eater so he went for the chicken Parm and I am a little more modern so I went for the spaghetti salmon. OHMYGOSH was the salmon spaghetti AMAZING. The boyfriend isn't even a seafood eater and he ended up eating half my dish. The sauce was so creamy and flavorful yet not as heavy as some cream sauces can be and the salmon was perfectly cooked. There were so half sliced cherry tomatoes as well which at first I was surprised at, but the fruity lightness was the perfect compliment to the sauce and salmon. Now just bc my boyfriend shared mine doesn't mean his chicken Parmesan was anything less than fabulous. The chicken was perfectly cooked, very crispy and juicy inside and almost the same size as the pasta bowl!! The pasta was very clearly homemade and absolutely delicious. We were too full to try dessert but we might have an update soon if we split an entree next time! Overall very impressed and definitely a top pick if you are looking for homemade pasta and rustic Italian bread here in Tampa and don't overly fancy. Trendy authentic Italian (not American Italian) cuisine in SoHo Tampa. Ava is a quick pace eatery that is casual to business casual and very loud both inside and outside and packed with 20 - 70 year olds chatting and drinking. Wait staff are mature, neat and attractive, and expedient. I was impressed with the menu selections. This type of exciting place leads me to dine tapas style by ordering only an array of appetizers, each more delicious than the next. But, to sit at table here and NOT have one of the many selections of perfectly prepared pastas would be regrettable. Of course you could easily go the beer and pizza route or add it to a pub crawl because the cocktail list will tempt you. Bartenders are infusing different concoctions and sangrias. We began with the shrimp crostino, tender shrimp atop thick cut peasant bread with a generous slice of buratta and preserved lemon. Wow! Next, the crab ravioli with several cheeses and frico (Parmesan crisps) was divine. Lastly, the octopus was roasted to perfection with fingerling potatoes and marinated fennel slices. I ordered the tagliatelle con funghi for my main. Very flavorful with fresh meaty mushrooms but after five bites, I was too full and had to box it for home. I gave the establishment 4/5 due to the noise level, crowded furniture placement, and the iron chairs outside have no cushions and are extremely uncomfortable for over 15 minutes. We had a party of 18 on Friday night and they couldn't have been more accommodating! Our waitress was very patient with us as we took our time to our drinks and food. The service was very fast for sure and they made sure our glasses were full. I definitely recommend the pork belly for starter as it was to die for! I really enjoyed the laid back casual feel of the design and space. It has a cosmopolitan appeal without being fussy. It's a great place to meet up with friends after work for a a lite bite and cocktails. For those in the hood I can see it being the hangout place ( get some dominos to play at the table). Ate here for a friend's birthday and was not disappointed. I'm half Italian so I have pretty high standards when it comes to Italian food, but Ava was up to the challenge. I ordered a penne dish with sausage which was quite good, though I wish it came with a bit more sausage. The service was very good as well. We were constantly attended to and both our appetizers and main courses came out fairly quickly. Our server didn't let me go thirsty either as she was there to get me another Maduro as I finished my previous one. I've also been here for happy hour and that is definitely something I need to do again. They have drink specials though they admittedly aren't as good as some other happy hours. Overall was looking good, not traditional Italian place, but quiet and comfortable, wood fire pizza offers, that is impressive, and very good and respectable wine list, also good selection of spirits. The food doesn't was magnificent but ok, my appetizer wasn't as they describe and my second plate was good but nothing delightfully. I understand that maybe because I was the last customer in Sunday arrived 5 minutes before close but no excuses aceptes, I order my appetizer and wait 18 min and nobody was in the restaurant except me and a couple, meanwhile working in my "not a described and delayed appetizer" my second arrives just in the middle of time, I had to finish fast because my lamb shank its turning cold and not desirable plate. I not finish my dinner and the bill was leaved in my table without a question a pair maybe a coffee, another drink or a dessert!!! What is an Italian Dinner without a dessert.... yes... nothing, niente... I must say I truly enjoyed my entire dining experience while at Ava. We sat outside since we chose to bring our four legged friend with us. They were more than accommodating which made our time there that much better. It was a tad bit chilly but with the plush blanket they provided my wife, cozy booth, and the heaters above made everything just perfect. As for the meal the bone in ribeye was fantastic and cooked perfectly. Secondly the celery root mash that was served with it was amazing and a must do again!!!! My wife choose the ox tail pasta was complex and delicate dish that was packed with tons of hearty and rich beef flavor...I must say I will plan on returning in the near future and heck maybe we will get lucky and run into Joe Madden!!! read more

I thought I had learned my lesson about trying new places within a month of their initial opening but my impending departure made it impossible to resist. I am extremely pleased I did heed my own advice as this was an experience I would regret not having not savored. The meal is served as the plates are ready but are not family style in the portions. Regardless, a party of 8 comfortably shared 3 starters. The octopus was well seasoned and the texture was soft with a crisped skin. The pork belly was pleasantly light on the fat topped with a fried egg which kept the consistency savory. It could have used a bit more seasoning though. Both the spinach and the endive were good as well though no memorable elements. There is a charge for the bread but that should not discourage anyone from ordering because it is fresh and has hints of the pizza from the oven from which it was baked. The main courses are limited but this is just the first menu and I anticipate there will be specials that not disappoint. The lamb shank was tender and the Brussel sprouts were a welcome change from the typical meat and potatoes pairing. The market fish was the red snapper which I sampled was delicious and the portion though daunting was actually perfect. I also sampled the ox tail pasta and ricotta sausage pizza which I will be returning for as my own main course. The drinks were ok not too boozey or sweet but nothing inspiring. Decor is beautiful and clean. The wait staff is friendly however the whole experience took 2 hours without desert. It is still opening month so the small hick ups can be overlooked since the food exceeded expectations. Strong blue cheese and reduced balsamic (we order it on the side). We tried the meatballs once and I wouldn't recommend them if you like traditional meatballs. Went to Ava last week, August 2021. Awesome food, awful service. Our waitress was very rude/had an attitude from the start. We felt very unwelcome. We had to ask if our waitress was still working after she disappeared for almost 40 minutes, and eventually saw her sitting and talking to coworkers at the bar. (There were only 3 tables of people in the entire restaurant as it was early brunch time). When we got our bill, the tip was already included in the charge, so maybe that's why our waitress was so rude/short with us. We would probably not go back as there are other restaurants on SOHO where we've had much better experiences. The food and mimosas were good though. read more

I went here for mother's day brunch yesterday and i was disappointed. I was so excited to take my mom here because I always come here and it is usually so good. We ordered the eggs Benedict which should have a poached egg and should be runny and my egg was completely cooked it was a hard boiled egg. This was my first time dining at Ava and I enjoyed most of it. We ordered the Ricotta cheese & toasted bread and although the flavor was excellent, I thought the bread to cheese ratio was off quite a bit. The ricotta came in a tiny ramekin typically reserved for flavored butters, so I expected more for an appetizer. The two pizzas split among a couple of people were the sausage and the potato with rosemary. They were both tasty but I think they forgot the Rosemary on ours. Still yummy, tho! Another entree was the grouper w/Israeli couscous. Scrumptious! Dessert was a must and the zeppoles, or sugared donuts, were amazing. The cherry tart a little less so, but one person at our table loved it, so maybe it was just not my cup of tea. The cherries were a sort of candied cherry-interesting, but sweet with a very dense crust. Again, just not my personal fave. Ava's is a great place to go for brunch in the Tampa Area. They have a wonderful assortment of foods that are perfect to start your day off with. The environment is well designed and the customer service is exceptional. Personally, my favorite part about Ava's their Bottomless Mimosas special. For a price of 17$ you can get unlimited mimosas for a couple hours. Only reason why my rating is a 4 star and not a 5 is because they refill the mimosas at a rate slower than I'd like. I always have a good experience at this place and I definitely recommend it. read more

It's rare that I don't make reservations for Friday night dinners out but it happens.. and on this particular night we didn't make any plans and just walked into Ava since it's in the neighborhood. The hostess informed us that their reservations were full & they couldn't seat us in a timely manner, all while more than half of the restaurant was empty. So we grabbed seats at the pizza bar which is great if you like interacting with your chef & watching the pizza making magic happen. The figure 8 cocktail was refreshing & Yumm. I also had a glass of secco red which was also great and tangy. For appetizer I had the mozzarella & tomato salad & it was fabulous. Very well balanced with the light dressing and herbs on it. I also tried octopus which was brilliant and delicious. The chickpeas were a little under cooked but the delicious flavors compensated for that small mistake. Dinner for me was the La Bestia pizza which was delicious. Light yet satisfying. If you are sharing the love then just know that the pizza comes out of the open Italian style which means it won't be cut into triangles for you. That process can make the pizza soggy in the middle if done so in the kitchen. You can of course ask your waitress to do so at the table if you must have it cut. Service could be faster & better. We felt like we were always looking for our waiter but she was also sweet & knowledgable about the menu so I think it's more of a management issue. Also the whole two hours we spent there the restaurant never filled up. I wonder what happened to all those filled up reservations!!?! I guess some answers in life I just won't get. Ahh Ava's... The first time I went here I was blown away. Awesome house specialty drinks and killer Salumi tray. When a restaurant cures their own meat you can't really go wrong. Pastas made in house with two sizes to choose from, heavenly right? However this time I was slightly disappointed when we opted to try the margherta pizza as an appetizer. I expected nothing short of amazing with the fancy Italian pizza oven. It was good I guess, but ours was burnt. And not the good kind where the crust is crispy and cheese perfectly hot. The kind where they shouldn't have served us. Now I wish I took a picture because surely the hype of this pizza oven doesn't promote this. I did notice others that ordered pizza didn't get this burnt appetizer flunder. Some times knowing when to start over is better and this was one of those times. The pasta was something to rejoice in though. Between our table we tried three kinds, all simply delightful. I'm also in love with their tomato and mozzarella salad. And the best part of the night- caramel budino. Chocolate ganache was too rich for me, but the table finished two caramel budino desserts and probably would have downed another if we could! And eclectic. Noes your chance to try octopus and hogfish. Oh ya, they didn't have hog fish today.....fail. Somewhat pricey for the portion. Worth a try once and if you find something you like then great. They have a private room and it's in a great central location on soho. Personally id rather go to 717 across the street. 3.5 stars? Four friends got together to try out Ava - great night with friends, but so-so on the food. We had reservations and were seated promptly. Ordered drinks (prosecco, holy sh*t batman, sprite and 1919 mule), warm ricotta app and margherita pizze. Friends enjoyed the warm ricotta and the margherita pizze had delicious crust - a tad burnt, but light, not dense. Main entrees were cavatelli Al Ragu (3 ordered this) and braised lamb shank. The Ragu dish was a typical pasta dish - nothing fancy, nothing spectacular. The lamb shank with brussel sprouts and lentils was salty - way too salty. The brussel sprouts weren't cooked all the way and were cold. Disappointing meals and didn't live up to the hype. Tiramisu for dessert - friends found it a delight. The ambiance and atmosphere were lovely, but no need to rush back to try more dishes. Also felt overpriced. read more

Subpar red lobster to be honest. As a self proclaimed lobsterite... this was mediocre at best. To begin.. the place isn't even called red lobster which is strange. B, no lobster. 4thly bottomless more like they are judge mental on the last 30 min of the the 2 hr limit. We loved the Vegan dishes! Not many upscale restaurants offer vegan items (yes, vegan cheese!) so this was a treat. No, you will not get a plate loaded with enough spaghetti for a family but it's great atmosphere, the food is great, and portions are plenty unless maybe you didn't eat all day. We had a reservation for my best friends birthday, the waitress was rude from the start and would walk away and visibly point at us and talk to the other waitresses, then they questioned our ID's when they'd all scan but he threatened calling the cops if they didn't. Very unfortunate considering we had a party of 12. will not be coming back. read more

Totally horrible!!! The bartender is the manager.... we had a super awesome waitress but she had ZERO support from Her Manager/bartender. We tried to enjoy a great Sat night out with friends, this bartender was out of the first three things each of us requested. We settled for what they had, and they presented with whatever they could come up with. Totally horrible and charged us too shelf for less than basic requests. Food was great, bar service was terrible! I just pray the owner of this establishment sees this review and makes super necessary changes, however making the bartender the "manager" is a super poor decision, so questions their judgement skills.
