I can definitely agree with Joy! Their service is slow! Our main entree took forever, but what saved their rating is our server who was awesome! Her name was Veronica. Props to her. And the taste of our stuffed pork chop was excellent. We first ordered the pork belly! It was nasty and fatty. I guess that's to be expected of pork belly, but honestly I've had pork belly where it wasn't like that. My hubby liked it because of the sauce and veggies or I would have for sure returned it. It was a turn off for me. Good thing the stuffed pork chop after waiting forever was really good. Usually if I'm turned off by food, I can't eat anything after that. The flavor of the roasted veggies along with the sun dried tomato and goat cheese with the pork chop is amazing. The size of the pork chop doesn't look as big until you notice how thick it is! Our waitress, Stephanie, was not only beautiful with an enviable lashes (made me wanna go get my lashes) was on top of it! The service was awesome. We ordered a funghi Salame pizza to share and kids ordered their own personal pizzas for $7. Unless you have an expensive child who loads up on additional toppings and makes it 100% more expensive. She added chicken a d mushrooms and her personal pizza was $14! I was kind of upset with myself for allowing her to do that, but Ava-- why are your toppings SO expensive? This was such a disappointing experience that I don't even wanna waste my time so I'm going to sum it up in a few words. 1. Disgusting undercooked food- The food was so undercooked that I began to question if it was even safe to eat. Not to mention nothing was fresh and the bread was stale and not even toasted. I lost my appetite when I looked at my meal. 2. Terrible, disturbing management. I requested a manager to come to the table because our food was inedible and it took over 15 minutes for anyone to even come over and acknowledge us. The manager was unapologetic and frankly uninterested in our complaints. 3. The filth of the restaurant, dishes, silverware, and glasses was embarrassing and hard to ignore. I requested clean silverware 3 times each of which got worse and worse. I never received a clean fork to even eat my meal. To sum of the whole experience they comped our meals but had the audacity to charge us $6 for ice tea. The manager never returned to the table to see if our second round of food was any better and did not acknowledge our terrible experience. I will never go back here and neither should you. I left the restaurant starving, disappointed and embarrassed for them. I was looking for a good Italian restaurant in Tampa and on google came through Ava. So we booked a reservation for Friday. It is a nice restaurant with a nice decor and parking garage nearby. We were seated by the receptionist and greeted by the server Hunter with the water and menu. After browsing through the menu we decided to order 1919 Mule, Ravioli, Funghi Pizza, Italian Mango and Chicken Parmesan. The service is pretty bad and we had to wait a lot to get our food. The service is the drawback of the restaurant. First we got our drinks. The drinks were good. Nice mango drink. Then we got our Ravioli. Ravioli was delicious. Loved the ravioli. The dining experience on New Year's Eve always feels like a roll of the dice. Restaurants gravitate to the prix fixe menu and suddenly you are paying a premium price for limited choices. We didn't want to don our sequins and strappy sandals so we elected to go with a neighborhood favorite Ava. It had been a few months since our last happy meal there... so it seemed like a good choice. It was not. Everything was off. Ava offered four courses.. a choice of an appetizer like braised octopus, mussels, meatballs or wood grilled vegetables, a choice of salad or soup, a choice of an entree including a filet with lobster tail, chicken piccata, lamb or crab-encrusted grouper and finally tiramasu or chocolate torte for a price of $79. Our friendly server gave us time to pick our drinks and we decided to select all of our options when we ordered our cocktails so we could talk uninterrupted. A few minutes (3? 4?) later, our first and second courses were whisked to our table. We were taken aback. We hadn't received our cocktails yet and we had presumed we would have some time to sip them before our food arrived. We made the best of it and gave our appetizers a try. The meatballs were superb. Soft and flavorful in a delicious pool of sauce, they were quite the hit. The braised octopus was also good with slivers of octopus and potatoes joining together for great bites. The thinly sliced octopus was just a tad chewy... always the challenge..but there was no arguing the great flavors. Our cocktails arrived midway through this course. As always, they were very good. Of course, we would have preferred to enjoy them when they were not competing with the food. My Old-Fashioned was not a good complement to braised octopus and Cherry did not mix with a luxious garlicky tomato sauce. We finished our apps and moved on to the small salads that have been delivered with them The salads were made of soft greens and lightly dressed. Unfortunately, we had to stop eating them to receive our entrees as they suddenly appeared. Whoops! And the bar was backed up so we had not received the wine we ordered to go with our entree I have to admit that both of us are now frustrated. Appetizers before cocktails. Entrees before salad. No wine. My spouse picked the filet mignon with fingerling potatoes, asparagus and bernaise sauce topped with a lobster tail. She loved the steak, the potatoes and the asparagus. She did not like the lobster tail. The chef topped it with bernaise. The sauce did not pair well. It overwhelmed and misguided the flavor of the lobster. Perhaps the tail was sauced by accident? I picked the chicken piccata, one of my favorite dishes. Sadly, one of the two pieces of chicken was burned. There was very little sauce and only a couple capers. At this point, I transformed to Grumpy Gus and ate the good piece of chicken, drank the wine that finally arrived and all but gave up on the meal. My spouse's tiramasu was good and may have been housemade. The chocolate torte was okay but then again, I had become Grumpy Gus ...disappointed in everything. I included a photo of the burned chicken and the sauced lobster tail. Please know that both entrees were delivered beautifully plated. This was our first visit to Ava since the pandemic. Our first thoughts are mixed, but we will visit again to try different things. The parking on the side is very helpful. The Carciofi Fritti was very disappointing. The artichokes were essentially tasteless hunks buried in an even more tasteless thick breading with very bland aioli. On our next visit we'll try a pizza as an appetizer. The Cavatelli al Ragu was way over sauced. My wife is sorry she allowed the waiter to talk her out of a Bolognese dish. My Veal Parmesan was the special of the day and it was outstanding. Very nicely executed. The only issue was the broccoli rabe was hard to cut, much less eat, because it was so under cooked. We ordered a nice bottle of Nero d'Avola so I didn't try any beer. I was impressed that they have Peroni and Unholy on draft. read more

The Basics: Ava is located in Soho in Tampa. There is a parking garage with plenty of reserved parking for the restaurant. There is an outdoor patio and indoor seating. Ava makes fresh pasta and pizzas and the food here is fresh and delicious! Things I like: I loved all of the food I had here at Ava. The pasta all tastes extremely fresh and every item I received or tried I absolutely loved. I ordered the Cavatelli pasta and I also had the Meatballs and Bruschetta as an appetizer. I would highly suggest all of these dishes. I have not tried the pizza yet, but I look forward to trying that on my next visit! Things I didn't like: Nothing! The food and service was all great and I loved the easy parking as well! Overall, if you are looking for fresh, homemade Italian food in Tampa-- this is a place to try! Very nice Italian restaurant...however, My previous visit there, the food was very good. Unfortunately, the service, not so much! There were 6 in our party and it wasn't very busy that time. The server didn't check on us or return to refill drinks. I was hoping the restaurant would train their servers so if I decided to return, I would have a more enjoyable experience. I decided to give it another try. We had reservations, again for six people. This time it was a Friday night and the place was very busy. We went to the bar first to have a drink and wait for the rest of our party and our table. The bartender was pleasant and made great drinks. I think his name was Parker? We ordered a few appetizers while we waited. The meatballs were great! The mussels were seasoned well and had a nice flavor of garlic, onion, and light brown broth. Onto the dinner at the table... Unfortunately, this is where it went downhill. The server was excellent this time. She was on her toes and checking on us. This time it was the kitchen. We were told the cooks were relatively new and having a hard time getting organized?!? Some of the orders at our table were Caprese salad, Chicken Parmesan, Eggplant Parmesan, and the Bolognese pasta. The Bolognese pasta was good except for the canned Parmesan cheese that they placed on the side. Terrible! The Parmesan dishes were not authentic Italian style in a deep dish pan. They were on a pile of pasta on a plate and just looked like it was thrown on top of the pasta. So they turned out very dry and tasteless. One of our guests did not get her dinner at all...the Eggplant Parmesan. We also had the Tiramisu dessert and that was moist and creamy as it should be...very good. At the very least, a manager should've stopped by and spoken to us. Placing all that stress on a server is not fair, especially that she did everything right. Unfortunately, when a restaurant is thriving but can't get it together, it's really disappointing. There are so many restaurants going out of business post Covid. Hopefully, they will pay attention to this review and make the needed improvements! In the meantime, there are so many other restaurants where we can spend our money and have an enjoyable experience. Came here for my friends birthday dinner on 12/29/2022, we ordered drinks, several appetizers and I happened to be the unlucky one who wanted to order a whole meal. Two bites into my chicken I was HORRIFIED to see that there was a literal MAGGOT on my plate. I have worked in restaurants for several years and if it was a fruit fly, a hair, or a piece of plastic I would've been okay, but not a very healthy larvae coming out of the chicken. Took management 10 minutes to come out and actually speak to me while me and the rest of my table tried not to throw up on their floor. She tried to blame the vendor (it could've been, but ultimately kitchens fault) then she tried to say it was from my crispy broccolini. Went here for brunch with a large group of friends this past weekend. The place was really cute and nicely decorated. I loved that they were able to accommodate our large party. Our waitress was also super sweet and helpful. Although we went for brunch, I feel like this place is probably more of a dinner/lunch place, as it is known for their Italian food, which wasn't on the brunch menu. Short trip to Tampa with friends for a concert and based on reviews and location we chose Ava. Without ever visiting the area, it turned out to be a great choice. From the staff, to the vibe (and comfortable noise level) of the restaurant - ask about their secret dining room - we were all very satisfied that we made this our first Tampa meal! The fry bread with Garlic and Truffle honey Ricotta are a must, and the Grilled octopus was among the best we've ever had. Exciting energy as soon as you enter, the decor and open layout between with dining area, bar, and kitchen keeps the energy flowing while somehow keeping the noise level low for easy conversations . The special appetizer plate was perfect with my favorites. The salmon was done perfectly, just right between tender medium rare and medium well; my new benchmark for salmon, and the grilled flavor carried through. Our special dessert plate was more than we could finish! Beer selection was just right and included hard to find local craft brews. My benchmark bourbon and an orange twist was also perfectly poured. We prefer to share several dishes to allow ourselves a well rounded experience anywhere we go. We tried 2 dishes: Ravioli Al Tartufo e Formaggio - loved the combination of delicate textures and unique savory complexity of this dish. As per the menu, the ravioli was made with - truffle and cheese filled ravioli over a cauliflower puree, mushrooms, brown butter sauteed leeks, finished with crispy leeks and truffle shavings. Also enjoyed the Buffalo de Burrata made with heirloom tomatoes, strawberries, mint pesto, aged balsamic and grilled bread. The juiciness and gentle acidity of the heirloom tomatoes were complemented by the ripe sweetness of the strawberries. The mint pesto was a refreshing perk as we mixed it with creamy burrata to spread on the perfectly grilled bread. The aged balsamic gave the dish's profile an added depth. My drink JUST IN THYME was delicious as well my friends' drinks were. I ordered Veggie Omelette to which I asked to add avocado, however, it came with the side of guacamole instead. I get that guac is made of avocado, but I specifically asked if they had avocado to which Olivia said "yes". The food runner, however, said that they didn't and that's why they gave me guac. I feel like I should have been told this while I was ordering/as soon as she realized there was no avocado. Olivia still charged me for it, only because she NEVER CAME BY our table after we got our food so she did not even know I sent it back. We sat with empty water glasses for over an hour and then chased her down for our check. We gave our cards to split the bill evenly and when we got our checks back Olivia removed the itemized receipt. The final price for each of us did not make sense so we asked for her to bring the itemized receipt back. When she brought it I realized that she charged us gratuity for a party of 3. Never experienced anything like this unless I am at a nice spot somewhere in Miami or New York City. The fact that I was charged 18% gratuity for my server to first wait 45 minutes to come by to place the order and then not come back for 2+ hours is unacceptable. We were at AVA's for 3+ hours and Olivia E. never came back to check on us or to see if we wanted another drink. We would have ordered more, but she never bothered to ask. I hope managers/owners read this so they can address the lack of care for customer experience by their team member. The menu is very different and food was not good overall. I got the avocado toast and for some reason it's the only Main item that doesn't come with a side, and the bread is so thick, that's all you taste... multiple peoples eggs were over cooked. One person got the smoked salmon Benedict and the eggs were hard boiled and the salmon wasn't a true smoked salmon! It flaked apart like a baked salmon. The "cheesy" grits came with literally 3 flakes of shredded cheese, a joke. There is no option for for olive oil and garlic or any white clam or Non tomato sauces. The flavors of the sauce is like oregano meets bland. The sauce is not red- it is orange. Everything on the menu has this gross sauce on it. The meatballs are not rich, they have a paste/strange consistency. I think the chef has worn out his welcome here. I'm not the only one to say this everyone I speak to at the bar says the same the same thing. It's too bad because it's a nice restaurant aesthetically but the food is terrible. Even the chicken Parm doesn't taste like chicken Parm it is just like flavored with terrible seasoning. How could you mess up chicken Parmesan very easily with terrible sauce terrible bread crumbs and just a confusing taste. Believe it or not the only good thing is the pork belly. We were there for a mom's brunch. We didn't even get a drink for 45 minutes. They were baking fresh bread (which you could see and smell). We asked for bread and the waiter said they didn't offer bread. I asked if we could buy some, and we were told no that they don't sell it???? He even went on to say that customers get mad all the time about it. Why would you make homemade bread in front of your guests and not allow them to buy it? When we first arrived the host was absolutely amazing that girl definitely deserves a raise always running around helping etc . But I give this place 2 stars because. I couldn't actually enjoy my food when it was hot. We ordered an appetizer and our food came out way before our appetizer and what bothered me the most is the food runner who told me he will put it under the heat lamp until we are finished with our appetizer. This is a strict review for HAPPY HOUR: We come to AVA for some really satisfying $5 wood fired pizzas & $6 glasses of the blend red wine. There are some other choices for HH apps and drinks, but the pizza and wine are consistent and kind of where it's at for me! I've ordered the Charcuterie a few times, but find that aside from the paucity of cheese on the plate, some decent meat, you have to be a pickled everything fan for the compliments.
