The only thing that was good is their frappe. It was simple, frothy, and left me super caffeinated all day. I ordered an omelette. Simple, hard to eff up. Right? Apparently not here. It was runny in the middle, dry on the outside, the fillings were all on one part- and the small serving of home fries left much to be desired. Perhaps this place is a favorite for others, and maybe they were just "off" when I was there, but I would not be too eager to give Avenue cafe another chance. read more

I used to go to Avenue café everyday when I lived in Astoria, but now since I moved to Philadelphia I look forward to going to avenue and relaxing with my family and friends and having a frappe and a sandwich. Great service and family atmosphere. I will be stopping by in November when I come down to Astoria. read more

To all the people complaining about the food at this place: This place is a typical "Greek style cafe". That means that the emphasis is less on eating and more on socializing. I would recommend going to this place on a lazy day with a bunch of friends and just sip on frappe for a couple of hours. Then you can better appreciate what this place has to offer. read more

I just went today for lunch, and since it was so warm out, I decided to sit outside. There was a guy who sat next to me who was smoking. I understand some people like to smoke while they eat, but as far as I know, you're not supposed to allow smoking in these sidewalk cafes. In any case, I have asthma and can't breathe when I'm near smoke, so I asked the waiter if they had a non-smoking section. He said no, but offered me another table, not taking into consideration the fact that if another smoker happens to come by and sit next to me again, the problem wouldn't be solved. I just felt like they were very dismissive of something that I'm sure doesn't just bother me. I've been here a couple of other times and have had problems with the servers then also, so after today, I decided it was time to write a review. read more

My frappe was mostly froth - I would say about 70% so I only had 30% of frappe to drink. They should really pay attention to their coffees since it is a cafe after all!!! The cheese-pie was also really greasy and I've had a lot better! read more

Avenue has always been one of my favorites on 30th! Unfortunately I hadn't gone in a whileeeee but I went last night- food was delicious (as I remember), & dessert was even better! Frappe was exactly how I like it. The server we had was my favorite part though! I've never laughed so much with a waiter. I didn't catch his name, he had an accent that seemed Serbian. This place caters to a mostly young Greek crowd. The food is consistently good and prepared fresh. Tonight I ordered the seafood salad which came with grilled octopus, Shrimp and grilled Salmon. The fish was fresh and the octopus was grilled to perfection. It's a great casual place for drinks and a Mediterranean flavored selection of pub/cafe food. They also serve Greek inspired coffee. The hosts and waitresses are younger and on point. Service is good. I recommend this for a casual spot in Astoria during all times of the year. In the warmer months patrons are able to sit outside and drink/eat. That is if you don't mind some people waving their cigarettes in the air like they just don't care. Lol. All in all, this place does a great job of acting as a bar to order cocktails/drinks and cafe for a variety of "greekcentric" coffees, as well as a decent restaurant for Mediterranean inspired, great tasting meals. read more

I will never eat here ever again. My husband and I went for brunch and I ordered the brunch burger and found an eyelash on it. When I confronted the waiter about it he kept asking me in an accusatory tone about how how it got there, felt like he was trying to say it was mine, however it was a fake eyelash. The service was terrible and slow and our waiter never came around, I had to wave him down to get his attention. I asked for skim milk for my coffee and he never brought it and we waited at least 20 minutes for a refill on our coffee, which usually restaurants are on top of your coffee situation but the employees here had no sense of urgency and were not friendly. The waiter took off the burger from our bill and did not charge us for the coffees, which I felt was appropriate. He managed to give us an apology that was not genuine at all. We will not return here..there are so many better places to go for brunch in Astoria. read more

I love their food. I like their drinks. The atmosphere is very nice also! Altogether, I must say that I like it. The service is a bit slow, but they do have lovely ladies working there (ladies, don't be jelous, they dress a little more provocatively, but that's their job, in a way - work for their tips). Here is what you have to understand about the cafes in Astoria. Avenue is the place to be. Where all the cool European Greek kids hang out (along with Cavo, which is more of a club). It's the place to see and be seen, which is why they drive their sports cars around the corner periodicially. That said, I go here for the food (very tasty, varied menu), coffee/frappes (order decaf or they will keep you up all night), drinks (varied), brunch (yummy), crepes (delicious sweet or savory), and outdoor seating including heat lamps in winter. As a lifelong Astorian, this is a block away from where I grew up, so it's home, despite the OTB Greek smokers. Yes, they will smoke outside. Yes, the service is slow. That is because of the relaxed European cafe mentality. Just get good at flagging the waitstaff and don't go here when you're in a hurry. Yes it's popular in the evening, especially the later it gets, but you usually don't have to wait too long for a table or just sit inside if you don't smoke. They do play loud techno the later the night gets which can be conversation-thwarting. They do sometimes have live music which is a refreshing fun change. You'll be cool if you're young, slim and tan, wear black, smoke, and leave your cellphone on the table. ;) Even if you aren't, you'll have a good time people-watching. Grand Cafe 1 block down on 37th is a good alternative if you're impatient, but mostly indoor seating and IMHO not as good a menu. Flo 2 blocks down on 38th is also a good alternative but more upscale and a little more pricey. Has a delicious menu, more gourmet. Quieter music (better for conversations/dates) and an outdoor garden area in back. Athens Cafe on 32nd was the hotspot before Avenue opened. It's still good, has recently redone their menu and is outstanding. Lots of outdoor seating. Any of these cafes have good coffee and greek desserts. IMHO, Avenue is the best. Avenue favorites are the crepes, Greek shepherd salad with chicken, chocolate mud cake, and the frappes. IMPORTANT: CASH ONLY. Have had to make a few runs to the ATM a block down when we forgot this. read more

I personally love this cafe/restaurant. It's always my go to spot when I am meeting up w/ friends for an informal lunch or coffee. I did go once w/ my husband and he wasn't crazy about it, only b/c we went on a Sunday brunch in the summer & it was insanely packed and loud. But if you go at normal times, during the day, or early evening it's not like that. It's crowded but not to much. I think the food is great but honestly I almost always get the same thing b/c I love it so much(The Avenue salad w/ chicken instead of bacon). Also if you are craving the dessert the nutella banana crepe thing they have is the bomb. As for service, no it's not the best I've ever had but I've never had any real problems w/ it either. Actually to be honest the last time I went the other day the service was extra attentive but I think that was b/c the waiter was flirting w/ me . But I digress...the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was b/c as someone else said they only take cash. But that aside, if you are looking for a fun place w/ cool ambience, music, & good food this is the place to go in Astoria! read more

Their frappe is good. Their frozen margaritas are just ice w/ a little bit of sour mix in my opinion. Five minutes into the drink all this separates. Being a former bartender, a (fresh) frozen margarita SHOULD not separate like oil & water. Their wines are very flat. They do not use the wine pump when closing the bottle (I've seen this) therefore all the air gets trapped in & lord knows when the next person to ask for that particular wine will come along so who knows how long that will sit there. Their white wines sometimes are not chilled. I agree with the "Amela D" that says the hostess should remember her promise to alert the patron if a table opens up outside. I think I've actually encountered her LOL The wait staff is very friendly. I went there for the world cup and even though it was absolute chaos the waitress was in the best mood w/ a smile on her face, God bless her. Their food is good too. Nice outdoor seating. Weekend evenings are jam packed with teeny boppers though. Just my opinion. I'm still amazed with their cash only policy. This isn't customer friendly in the 21st century. I was excited about this place as it very cute and lounge-y; apparently it is all aesthetic. It wasn't incredibly busy as it was a week night but none the less our seafood salads took their time getting served. Though my boyfriend complained about portion size my complaint was the lack of effort put into the salads: the minimal seafood (2 shrimp, a tiny piece of salmon, and 4 pieces of calamari) were all burnt and dried out, red peppers and cherry tomatoes were buried in the center of the plate as if they were just plopped there, and the pita bread was stale. To top it off the salad came with no dressing: we had to put our own olive oil and harsh vinegar on them. This is not typically a problem for me but for the price and the time it took for our two salads- a huge disappointment. read more

I really love the grilled chicken sandwich with halloumi and cucumber on warm pita. Staff will let you sit and relax and won't bother you. They also don't mind that I bring my little dog and let her sit on my lap. Definitely a good place to sit outside and eat. read more

It was my birthday weekend, and my parents came out on a Sunday to take me out to lunch. It was a nice day out so I walked them over the 30th avenue and we decided to give Avenue Cafe a try. We were seated inside and placed our orders, nothing too complicated just some sandwiches and a personal pizza. At first we didn't notice how much time had gone by but then our rumbling tummies started to get our attention. We had to ask where our food was once the magical disappearing waitress actually showed up. After asking a second time, my parent's food came out. No pizza. We ask and were assured it's on its way. Long story short, my pizza never came, and the waitress was no where to be found for most of the meal. When she was near she just kept saying it was coming. It was the first time ever that I had been tempted to leave no tip at all. Needless to say we all left pretty pissed (and me pretty hungry) especially after we had trouble getting the check. I've never experienced such bad service and I can't even comment on how their food is since mine never came! My advice...chose one of the countless other cafes on 30th avenue and avoid the headache. read more

Great place for desserts and brunch. Nutella crepe is the best in Astoria. I always order the paninis or pizza and never disappoint. This place is always Packed on the weekends. Great place to get drinks and food. Summer time brunch at their outdoor section is also great. read more

Let me just start by saying how mad I was today because of the "service" that my friends and I received at this place, and this was the first time that I had ever got up and left the place without even making an order. I haven't been in avenue in awhile so my friends and I decided to go and get something to eat and drink since it was a nice day and they have a nice outdoor seating area, plus a smoking section which is a huge bonus, for us at least. At first we were told that they do not have available tables at the smoking section, but we were lucky because a group of people had just left a minute after and a really nice lady walked us over to our table, the bus boy came out within a minute or two, he was really polite and served us with fresh cold water. Now the part that got me annoyed was the fact that after lighting my first cigarette, another waitress came over to us and said that this is not a smoking section and she'll be able to get another table for us in the smoking section in few minutes since a group of people was about to leave, I was a little bit confused because of the fact that we were seated at the "smoking section" in a first place, so the waitress said it was probably a misunderstanding. So I put out my cigarette immediately. The same waitress had offered if we'd like to drink something so we asked for menus, we waited about 5 more minutes just to receive two menus(and there was three of us) by a different waitress who had sunglasses on,she interrupted conversation by holding menus right in front of my friends face without even saying a word and just standing and starring at us, until I took the menus and said thank you, she walked away still not saying a word. Now the part that got me really mad was the fact that after getting menus no one came over to our table for about 20 minutes while we were sitting there and talking, and I took a sip or two of the snapple that I got earlier cause it was hot and I was thirsty, and there was at least about 5-6 different waitresses who passed by without even looking at us or walking over to our table to take our order. I lost my appetite because of how annoyed I was, and the last thing I wanted to do is leave my money in a place who doesn't appreciate their customers. So thank you but no thank you! Just for the record this is the first and longest review I had ever wrote, and it's because of the worse service I "received" in my entire life! Never coming back again. read more

Monday evening,we sat outside. Place looks nice. Our waiter was nice. Cheap place. But the quality was "cheap" too. Smoothie looked like fat swimming in liquid....instead of using just fresh strawberries they put so much fake juice that was lying on the bottom! Took a few sips..Then I ordered chocolate mud cake. OK, every place has slightly different version, but this was chocolate soufflé !!! Very different! Didn't touch it, gave it to my friends who ate it... Even though I'm not Greek, I love cold Frape. I also happen to live in the neighborhood and always looking for a good spot where I can sit outside and eat. Unfortunately Avenue Cafe, simply put is run by A-HOLES. Their food is good for its price and their coffee specialties even better but the ATTITUDE of the servers and especially the attitude of the managers is beyond words. Seriously it's like they don't want you to be there. Last time I went there, the cute, but snobby and SLOW waitress drop me the wrong check. 20 minutes went by and I couldn't flag her down- she was too busy talking with obviously her friends at another table. I was in a rush so I went to the bar to request my check, pay and leave. The A-HOLE behind the bar, a tall Greek dude with blondish, a little bit long hair gave me an attitude b/c he couldn't figure which table I was. I pointed to him: Right across the bar, you idiot. He finally gives me my check and murmurs something in Greek while rolling his eyes. Another time not long ago, this same guy was screaming very rudely at one of the waitresses which in turn started crying and then disappear in the bathroom! The food and drinks are worth the money, but I would much rather stick to Grand and Flo. Same quality and value, but less drama and no weird MACHO looks from the managers/owners or whatever the heck those dudes are. read more

I came here for brunch and it was pretty good. Ordered an omelet with tomatoes, mushrooms, ham and a fruit salad instead of homefries. It was good. Had a mimosa to go with it. I liked the mimosa. Nicely decorated and the music is uplifting. The waitress was friendly and attentive. I enjoyed the music and the atmosphere. I'll be coming back, at least for brunch, again. read more

Love coming here with friends. The music can be a little loud at times. We sit at the bar sometimes because one we can quickly get a drink reordered and we find it cozy to catch up. This is my go to spot for frappes!!! They are amazing!! Creamy , strong, made to order yo your liking. Their guacamole burger is great! Love their fries are sprinkled with fresh oregano. The steak pizza is huge for sharing and so tasty. Their philly steak sandwich is great and you get a choice of fries or salad. The chicken gyro is juicy and flavorful. My favorite salad here is their Avenue salad. Any crepe and drinks you can't go wrong. I've been here twice for brunch and they are a good value. All I can say is this place is dangerous for drinks. Went there with a friend of mine and my sister. I had 3 bourbons and my friend had two, I believe it was makers mark. A half an hour after the drinks I felt really really drunk and dizzy. I almost fell down on the floor, then ran to the bathroom and vomited , passed out on the couch, woke up with a terrible headache and could barely get up to go to work. Talked to my friend the next day and he to got really trashed too and had a massive hangover. I think they did something to the bottle , I mean there had to be something wrong with the bourbon. I've been drinking bourbon for years now , had a whole bottle at times with a friend and i wake up with no hangover , no headache, no nothing , that is why i prefer to drink bourbon. 100 % something was funny about my drink. Anyway was sick for a whole day. I am never going back there again. From what i remember the service was pretty bad too . If you are in Astoria and don't enjoy drinking rubbing alcohol, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else! Looking into filing a complaint about them. read more

I called for a pickup order and was greeted by a male saying "what's up" .. after telling me to hold On again and again I heard the male repeating the order to someone else. The person taking the order was extremely unprofessional I wasn't finished with my order before he was already trying to get me off the phone this happened twice. Let the customer speak without interrupting them, ask at the end of the order if I want anything else, ask for a name or number for pickup, and review the order back to the customer, none of this was done and the order came out wrong with only two out of four items ready. We had to wait an additional 20 minutes for a turkey club, ridiculous. No apologies were made and the whole experience was extremely rude. A pickup order is supposed to be quick and easy and this was long and annoying. Is there nobody around these employees watching them do their job? There young and careless and far from polite they do not make you feel comfortable coming here. That's the point of customer service to ensure people come back. I gave two stars because the food is good. Also the serving sizes are inconsistent sometimes I get four little sandwiches(2 sandwiches cut in half) or two sandwiches(1 sandwich cut in half) The ceasar salad appeared to be one handful of lettuce and croutons. No no no. While the food is eh, passable (if you like dry meat in your sandwiches) the service is HORRIBLE! The waitress took our order and gave us our check and never stopped by during the meal even though she was clearly standing around doing nothing.
