This rustic deli makes all their own bread. Since my recent relocation, I yearn for their sourdough or rosemary loaves. When I came home to visit my grandmother, she would request a loaf every time (that and bagels from The Bagelry, but that's another review altogether!) I've also sent them in care packages with the recipient thrilled to behold such tasty bread. The quality of the bread has been unsurpassed in my experience. It is so flavorful and soft with an almost feathery texture on the inside and an amazing crunchy, flaky crust. Their pastries are excellent as well. Going there for lunch is a treat, too. My all-time favorite thing to order was a half veggie sandwich (ciabatta bread with cream cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, red bell peppers, red onions- no cucumbers) and a house salad (mixed greens, feta, vinaigrette). Avenue Bread has my favorite loaf of bread ever. Hands down. The Rustic Wheat is a wheat bread that has a sourdough tang. I am obsessed with sourdough and this is just heaven in a loaf. In terms of the food you can order there, it's delicious. Of course, the breakfast and lunch food is served on their bread. My two favorite sandwiches are the Avenue Veggie and Mediterranean Veggie (I obviously don't eat meat). I love supporting locally and this place really sums the whole local theme up. James Street is the largest one in town- and I suggest that's where you bring groups or family for a bite if you plan to. Amazing place to go for a quick bite in Bellingham! When we lived in bellingham we would go here for breakfast every (and i mean every) saturday. The breakfast sandwiches are to die for - warm english muffins, tasty eggs, and great add ons (sausage, bacon, veggies, etc). There is often a "special", that would blow our minds. Additionally, the pastries are amazing - we live in seattle now but i still crave the almond croissants. Lunch is also a great meal. It was $9.50 for the sandwich with a small side of potato chips, but I feel it was worth the price, especially compared to something like JJ's or subway, it was chock full of roasted meats and was very tasty. The Fairhaven location is great but the Railroad location is a littly sketchy. Wonderful sandwiches with fresh ingredients. This is the second time I've been here, and ordered just plain eggs and their rustica bread. The first time within an hour I was ill - nice, since I had a long drive back down to the Edmonds area. They were really awful. That said if you want a classic sandwich on some really tasty break without fuss go here. Their Egganue sandwiches are da bomb. Try them all. Their bread is really good. Their Honey Whole Wheat is my favorite although Avenue Bread takes second place to Breadfarm bread. Their pastries howeverare are hit and miss. They can be pretty good or really horrible. Scones are either moist and flavorful or dry and nasty. Other pastries are often way to greasy and not at all tasty, but some days they get it right and it ends up tasting really good. I don't care to take the chance any more. Head to Mt. Bakery La Vie En Rose for a proper croissant, the ones at Avenue fluctuate in quality so badly to make it not even worth trying them. Just had a delicious Mexican eggenue sandwich. The Mexican comes on your choice of bread with an egg, spinach, tomato, salsa, cheddar cheese, and jalapeno cream cheese. It was spicy goodness. Got off to a bit of a bumpy start with them because I have a Real Service dog but am not blind.. but we got past that bit.. and they got educated (by me) on the rules. No problem. Now, It has become one of my favorite places to have Breakfast. The one guy always remembers my name now.. and I appreciate that and his attention to detail. It's a bit of a chore having the dog and juggling food and coffee, and he remembers to put the danish in a basket instead of on a plate. The rest of the staff is great too, all of them being very helpful, friendly and cheerful. What I like most is once I'm seated and she is under the counter at the front window, They deliver the remaining food to you when it is ready. Always hot, oozing goodness.. and consistently well prepared. I tend to get a breakfast combo along with a danish of some type. While my coffee is cooling I eat the danish and wait for the "Country" which is one of their "Eggenues" (Egg sandwiches) on rosemary bread (the plain is great too, but the rosemary is a delight).
