I've been going to Nelson's for about a year now and I will continue into 2026, as it has the homey welcoming vibe that most places in Bellingham lack. A fantastic meal to note is their chicken and waffles. Only few places do chicken and waffles in Bellingham (I.e. horseshoe) but Nelson's nails it everytime with that sausage gravy. Staff there are awesome but they will tell you not to feed the cat that visits outside tables as he will get chunky. Very considerate. Got off work at 8 a.m. and called this place shortly after. They open at 8, and I called at 8:06 to put in a take out order. Two pancakes and 2 eggs. When I got there the guy told me the cook/chef? was still making up the pancake batter - I specifically said that I wasn't in any hurry. My order arrived very quickly, and when I got home the pancakes were burned - not black, but very dark on the outside, also tough and the inside was slightly undone (wet). I'm pretty sure that they were cooked on a griddle with too high heat. I took a few bites because I was hungry and just gave up. The eggs were fine, and made to order. The pancake order was just inexcusable. Really, it's among the simplest things to make and it wasn't like I was in a hurry. Also, this isn't something hidden, the pancakes were clearly overdone, yet they were boxed up and given to a customer. Whoever was the cook should've apologized for the wait and redid the order, or just not rushed in the first place. I like to give places 2 tries before I comment, but I don't see myself going back. read more

Fun little while in the wall. Well actually it's a cute little diner inside a corner store market in a local neighborhood in Bellingham. It has that fun quirky vibe Bham is known for. We decided to come because of the great reviews. We're a little surprised when we arrived at the location but it was worth it. DEFINITELY a "vibe". Service was good, friendly and attentive. Suzy had a great smile and was great at answering our questions and making suggestions. She and the other server tag teamed so you never had an empty coffee cup and if you needed something you didn't have to hint them down. They really anticipated your needs. Something so many servers today are missing. Food was great. My hubby ordered the classic. Ever medium eggs bacon potatoes sourdough toast. His eggs were perfectly done. I ate the corned beef hash with over easy eggs. The homemade raspberry jam was so delicious. We saw a diff customer eating their giant pancakes so we decided to order ONE to share. They were fluffy and you. Could taste hints of vanilla. The fresh fruit was one of the topping options. Serving sizes are plentiful. Well this is a cute little neighborhood spot I wish I knew of while living here! We stopped by to feed our hungry kiddo late breakfast. It was busy but we were seated right away on a Saturday morning. Eclectic vibes and friendly staff. We ordered country fried steak w/eggs and oatmeal. While we were served coffee and water right away, we waited 40 mins for our food which wasn't too complex of an order. The food tasted great once it was served (plus we were extra hungry). I've come here a couple times and have absolutely loved it. Today my boyfriend and I came for breakfast (11:28, I checked my text I sent my mother about going to breakfast) and we waited 30 minutes and got our drink order in and another hour passed when we were asked to confirm what we ordered. Yes, an hour and a half. A party of 5 ordered just as we did and they got their food and finished within the time we were waiting for our food. I very politely asked our server how much longer she thought the wait may be for our food since an hour and a half passed. She said about another 20 minutes and we were most definitely not sat an hour and a half ago. I said well yes, we've been here since 11:30 and it is now 1pm and she rolled her eyes and was like whatever you say but it hasn't been that long. I said that's okay I would like to just cancel the order then and she got defensive saying the kitchen is backed up and they make everything fresh so it's a reasonable amount of time to wait. 2 hours is? I appreciated her apology about not letting us know that she didn't warn us about the wait as we were seated but that was only after my boyfriend corrected her that she didn't tell us about the wait when she insisted she did. I assured her our frustration was not directly at her and we were just hungry and had been waiting to eat for a while. She got upset and walked away after I paid for my drink (I left a tip for the kitchen). Good luck on coming here! read more

When you add everything up, one breakfast can total $29 (tax and tip not included). My husband and I spent a long weekend in Bellingham. We went to Nelson's Market twice, once for dinner then second time for breakfast. Dinner, we ordered French Dip with fries and full club sandwich with chicken soup. The French dip was mediocre, however I would go back for the full club. Breakfast, we ordered the special eggs Benedict with home fries, and waffle with fruit & side of bacon. Wow, the special eggs Benedict was extremely worth the 2 visits. This is classic Bellingham, a market plus a restaurant makes it a gem in York neighborhood. Out of the way with lots of local charm that forces you into one of the many historic neighborhoods. The food is perfect for the setting, it has a counter of which is required if you are a serious breakfast eatery. Oh Marlins, where have you been all my life? I recently moved to the eclectic York neighborhood in Bellingham and was pleased to find Marlins a very short walk from my new home. Boasting awesome breakfast classics, friendly small-neighborhood service, and (later in the day, of course) a great beer happy hour this is quickly going to become my go-to spot in the Ham. On my first visit I had the corned beef hash - it was tasty and difficult to finish the large portion. (If I had a wish, it would be that breakfast restaurants offered a true half-order for those of us who, as much as we'd like to, just can't put down a huge brekky. But this isn't Marlins' issue - it's industry-wide.) On my most recent visit I prepared by not eating for about 16 hours before my arrival, and was able to almost-finish the tasty mushroom and swiss omelette special of the day. The crispy potatoes served with most entrees are what puts this little breakfast spot over the top, though - they're absolutely perfectly prepared little nuggets of potato joy! Be prepared to wait whenever you come to Marlins. There isn't a lot of seating, and even on weekdays it can be crowded. But if you're looking for the quintessential Bham vibe, look no further than here. read more

I love Marlin's Cafe! It's located in the historic York District and has a great charm to it. I visited on Labor Day around 11, and there was no wait. There seemed to only be one server, a gentleman working the cashier and taking bar orders, and a busser in the front of the house. While the staff count seemed low, I was impressed by how we were greeted when we entered, seated quickly, and the server was already taking our drink order. My boyfriend and I both ordered eggs Benedict, which did not disappoint! The hollandaise sauce was excellent, and I loved the way the potatoes were cooked. Great meal and value, with a darling ambiance. When we visited, the whole Nelson's Market building was for sale, so hoping the new owners keep this great cafe going. read more

I don't mind waiting a table for great food on a Saturday morning. I do mind waiting at every step in the process AFTER I've been seated. It took 45 minutes for us to get our food after sitting with no water or coffee for 15 minutes. After eating we waited 20 minutes for our bill...everyone but me left the table and I sat there with my card in my hand for another 20 minutes waiting for someone to bring my check. I almost walked out to be honest as several times I looked around and the staff was hanging out not paying attention to any customers. The ONLY reason I gave a third star is that the Benedict was good. The rest of the food was ok. My advice - hard pass. read more

Response to business owner's response: you have two doors, maybe there is a sign maybe there isn't, but we entered the door inside the dining area because it's our first time and we parked on that side. Regardless, we are customers and we didn't see any signs (whether they are there or not). So you give us a bad look and ignore us? Paying customers walk in, sit at counter, and that's what you do? How about asking us politely to sit somewhere else or to ask us to please wait to be seated? Very similar experience as Katie H in another review. My friend and I waited for a few minutes while seated at the counter. When a waitress (Saturday 4/6/24 around 8-9am) finally comes by, she looks at me in the eye and doesn't say anything. I actually said "hey, how are ya" which she flat ignored and just walked by. I don't want to play the race card but I will tell you that's the assumption my friend and I were trying hard not to believe.
